$225 logo for new company concept to help build communities, reduce commute necessity, foster local economies.

Co. Name Neighborhood Work Space

Concept:
Business Neighborhood Work Space will match local businesses that have extra space in their offices with individuals who want to rent that space for short, irregular periods of time on an hourly basis. Initial users will be commuters, but later this could expand to people who just need a quiet place away from the home office, volunteers who want an official office for their local club, or other uses.

Application
Logo will be used primarily for website. Later applications will include basic print materials (brochure, business papers). Must use at least one color other than b/w; may use 4-color.

Deadline 31 March 2006.

Elements
Logo should reflect some of the following terms: business, home, commuting, sharing, electronic access, community, neighborhood. The company initials (NWS) may be a problem because “NW” may be interpreted as “Northwest”; although we are starting in the Northwest we do not want a logo that constrains us to this area. Logo must include company name (as written above) as part of the application. We will select type font later but feel FREE to give suggestions.

Design should be square, 1” x 1” (exclusive of the company name); however, we are open to a concept which is somewhat longer on the horizontal plane. Stylized graphics of people may be used, but our focus is more on relationships than individuals. We would be comfortable with a relatively simple design (e.g., Nike “swoosh”) but this would make it necessary for us – as a start-up – to have the company name be a stronger portion of the visual element. Feel should be “comfy” and friendly, reflecting not a hectic work place but a comfortable working environment. Hot bright colors probably won’t work well.

Other Logos
Many “neighborhood” logos have houses or hands in them. While not a negative, these tend to focus on the home/people aspect. We are trying to convey a sense of businesses and local residents sharing, while also communicating a sensed of economic vitality. The ubiquitous use of computer hardware in logos is too overused, yet one key element to this business concept is that the local office may have access to technological equipment or services that are too expensive or complicated for many residents. Last, since we eventually want this to go beyond merely commuters to others, the business aspect can be a main part, but should not be the only part.

Colors
No strong preferences, but must convey a sense of community. Harsh colors probably not useful, and logo components must visually be interconnected.

Type Fonts
Many “neighborhood” fonts are overly casual, but we also want to avoid any sans serif since that would be too formal

Jennifer: colors very good; connection visual is excellent, but I'd like to include some concept of "home" in there.

Spot on. Will pass along today. Cansylization can be a bit more pronounced, so house is clearly diff from small office, diff from "corp HQ"? Would make it easier to adapt to website concepts.

I'll share with others, but I've sen the puzzle approach eleswhere. Sems a bit too complicated, both visually and philosophically, for waht we want to convey. Simler, easier, is better.

Thankx; printed out and given to President, who said she likes it. Waiting for other alternatives to arrive, get evaluaed. No need to do anything more unless you get inspired with a new approach.

Good start on merging ideas. Stuff we liked: buildings and homes silhouette, sense of front area where "Work Space" is. Concerns:"heaviness" of background silhouetts, work space is 2 words, and our focus is more n building community than work, so font approach on the neighborhood should be reversed with that of work space. Also liked the visual sense of movement from the lines.

Jennifer, just a norte that Work Space is 2 words. Also, this is about community building more than work, so the size of the word "Neighborhood" vs. the size of work space wuld benefit from a slightly different approach. .

The visual definition betwen home and city is still a bit too muddled for me; hoping to get a sens of cleart differece that home is not work, and vice versa. Colors are liked by some, considered too "hot" by others. The fading of the blue bldg. might be stronger? Your call -- and explanations apreciated: what is the norm for a good website logo?

Well, the President wasn't a big fan of this even though it did follow MY directions. Work Space a bit too small, and graphics "not interesting.

Thanks to all who worked on this. We are going to use this design for our initial logo. As with many clients, we are going with a gut feel that is NOT based on years of graphic design experience, but rather a sense of our markets and product.

Blue Cherry Graphics was our final choice. Thanks to all of you whom took the time to review our needs, understand our concept, and apply your skills to creating a strong visual representation of a lot of words.

We appreciate your skills and the range of different approaches. Reviewing how you attempted to create the logo has given us pause several times to consider how people will view -- literally and figuratively - our services.

Wishing you all good luck for your future projects!
