Logo for Modemsite.com (http://modemsite.com) (Admin code added by Palmer - 617124A)
Looking for something that conveys trust, authority, speed to replace current logo.
Small file size desirable (for faster page loading).
Current logo is 200x120 split into 2 files - top = 200x75 and bottom=200x45. Would like to drop in replacement as 2 files, as well as have a single 200x120 rendering. Scalable would be a plus, although not essential. (Current logo is 2.46k + 1.7k or 4.16k tl.)
Contest will last 14 days.
The winning designer agress that copyright to the winning design will be given to me; credit to the designer with a hyperlink will appear on several Modemsite pages.
Thanks in advance!
Aloha,
Richard

Hi Richard,
I'm not quite 100% sure that this is what you are looking for, but this is my first try at this contest.
http://www.shift3.com/MODEM.gif
I drew the plug in illustrator, and just added some basic text with your site name at the bottom. Similar to the format on your current logo.
Well, please let me know what you think and what changes (if any) you would like me to make.
Thanks,
Robert Sperry

Wow-
I had made a big post replying here, and accidentally hit backspace outside of the edit area, which took my browser BACK and erased all my input.... (2nd time this happened to me on this board - I had previewed my original post, then lost all the text when I tried to edit it.)
Anyway, I've got another job to do right now, so my feedback will be delayed.
I would like to suggest to all -
I think I prefer the bolder/thicker font style, but would like to see something where part of the lettering is removed/replaced with thin lines, perhaps some extending beyond the lettering itself (speed?)
Later on, I'll try and re-create my more specific comments on the submissions so far.
Thanks to all.
Richard

Silly me, I just made a big reply to your post then thought, "Hey I'll see if it does it to me as well". Well... guess what, it did :) I'm sorry that happened to you Richard, I'll check with the forums' support site to see if there's a way to fix that. I apologize.

OK - here goes...
Palmer - no need to apologize - it's not your fault. I do know the Backspace key in IE is a shortcut to the 'Back' button... Going 'forward' to a form page keeping the form data entered so far is possible depending upon how the site/form/pages are designed....
Anyway - on the logo & entries so far- thank you all for such a speedy response!
Pixelbreak - Graphics along with text has been a hard one for me (and the designer of the logo I'm using now) - and the 'electric plug' doesn't 'turn me on' - the only thing I can think of along this line is a 'phone plug'....
While a cool/integrated/relevant graphic would be nice, I think I want the site name-text to be the primary focus.. So, I think I'm going to be happier with BIGGER text...
Buginajar - not quite sure about this one - I like the 'Modem' I like the concept of doing something like you've done with the S, but.... Maybe if the S turns into a phone cable that plugs into some other element (a letter that looks like a phone jack? or...?)
Marina - I like the way the text looks - I might prefer the first m to be capitalized... but, the modem.... maybe if it had something like led's on the front panel, (or led-bar graph) ---- ? or, even something more abstract?
Demex - I like the effects on this - I think I'd like it more if the text were bolder, perhaps taller, and the plug looked a little more like the standard phone plug; and I think I'd like to have the '.com' in there, too....
As I indicated in yesterday's post, I'd like to see something which I think gives the actual Modemsite.com text in the logo some 'speed'.....
Aloha!

Thanks for the latest entries....
ubergerlgeek - I like the font, and it's attractive, but doesn't give me the 'action/speed' feel I think I'm looking for.
Wonderlogo - the concept is more what I'm looking for, but you'd need to do some work on this - first size - I'm looking for the logo in a size of 200x120. Doesn't have to be scalable, but that would be a plus. Also, Modemsite or MODEMSITE - no space between modem-site. Colors - I'm "color-impaired" but, methinks the colors of this logo aren't a good fit for the current page layout of the site (www.modemsite.com ) And finally, would need some work on the graphic - to me, kind of looks like a fish/whale...
Dan - This is the closest to what I think I'm looking for - at least in terms of the font/effect to lettering. Now, if you could do this in a 200widex120length rendering (which would allow for bigger lettering) and perhaps jazz it up a little bit, and maybe experiment with font/background colors/effects.... :D
Thanks & look forward to more submissions, and am open to new ideas & opinion on what it should look like as well.
Aloha,
Richard

Uber - I like your new one better, but I think I'd like to see something 'totally different' from you....
Marina - I like #2 the best. If you'd like to work on enhancements/choices on that one, I'd love to see 'em... I like the graphic of the modem better than the 1st, however, would like to see one with the modem replaced by something like a rectanglular led or bar-graph led display.... a bar-graph led 'lit-up' / more than one color/shade; perhaps even a 'Slow' 'Fast' label on it.
Sparkie - I like the concept. Would make same kind of request on replacing the phone graphic as in comments to Marina above. Perhaps a similar but different base font face - I think I'd like the first M to be capital, and would prefer a font that has a dotted i; also would like to see the period before .com.
Thanks again to everyone - I really appreciate all your work!
Reminder - I'm planning to choose a winner on January 19 - (and since I'm in Hawaii - GMT-10, it will actually be Monday in a lot of places...)

Sorry for delay in response here (I thought I would get e-mail notification when there was a reply; either I missed it or it didn't come through).
Wonderlogo - I like your entry. (Would like to see it in the target size of 200pixels wide; 120 high)
Sparkie - LED Bar Graph - check out
schematic (http://my.en.com/~danp/train/vmeter.htm) and
this (http://www.endurasoft.com/screenshots/cxshot13.htm)
(The 2nd has 10 led's stacked horizontially; I was thinking of 1 or 2 positioned vertically....)
Sparkie - I like your 2nd submission much better. Maybe forget the led and try giving me a choice using a different typeface....?
Dan - I like your design - How about taking out 'The'; and moving the .com to appear with the 'Site'?
Ubergerl - I like your new submissions! - 1&2 more than #3.

Thanks for the latest entries....
I'm liking practically all of the entries coming in - going to be hard to choose one.
Speaking of which - here's my plan for contest close -
I'd like all entries to be in by Sunday, Jan. 19 at 10PM GMT (5pm EST) -- I hope to choose the winner shortly after the deadline.
Uber - out of the newest 4, I like the bottom left (writing on top of the bar graph); wondering what it would look like if the white in the bar graph was 'in front' of the typeface putting partial lines in the Modemsite. Also, please make it
Modemsite - not ModemSite. (I would like to see this layout with the typeface used on the top 2) And, as far as the colors - I don't trust myself in making most color choices - need help/guidance with that.
To all: One of the things I'm planning to do in making decision is to see how the logo looks on the 2 basic page layouts on the site - note that most of the pages on the site don't have a columnar layout - just a (blueish)) background (see, I can't even name the color). So, you may want to drop your logo in to the home page as well as a page like this one (http://modemsite.com/56k/v92hype.asp) in finalizing your entries.
Thanks again & Good luck!

Just wanted to add - Platinum - not bad, but I'd like to have the .com in the logo, and, only the first M in a capital (Modemsite .com)
Nice job Marina :)
Also, I've added a page on my server that has 2 blank transparent gifs where the logo goes - here (http://modemsite.com/56k/_logo.asp)
Remember, in the end, I'm going to need to split the logo into a top & bottom (.gif) - 200x75 top; 200x45 bottom for total size of 200x120. It would help me if the final submissions were split into 2 files.
ALSO - I think most of the logos would look best in gif with transparent background so that white=page background color independent from the logo. (Am I making sense?)

how about this?
richard
01-18-2003, 11:42 AM
uber -
maybe I'm confusing the issue with the size / split -
your logo in last post is about 1/2 as tall as I'd like.
The 2 files/transparent is related to how the pages are actually rendered - the bottom half is in a different cell than the top half; the logo is thus partially placed in the nav bar (bottom) which has a different background color.
I've cutout from your last post, resized to give you an idea of the area the logo should cover:
richard
01-18-2003, 12:02 PM
Marina -
You don't have to do this unless I pick your entry - just let me know you can arrange it into 2 files and in a way that the darker color lines up with nav table.

We know, we know :crying:
We have a brand new server to put the site on, just trying to figure out the best time to make the transfer. The time when it will be the least disruptive. Kind of difficult since we have about a dozen time zones represented here.
The plan is for mid-week sometime around midnight EST. We'll make an announcement and email it to everyone when we decide.
Very sorry for the inconvenience,
Palmer

Sorry - I had hoped to choose a winner yesterday, but I couldn't access the forum to get all the entries. I don't think I'll have time to do it today (Monday).
I am having a big problem - many of the entries aren't in the target size, and I cannot evaluate any of the entries without manipulating the files (saving into 2 gifs w/ transparent background), and, since I'm no graphics/design expert, I'm not sure if I'm doing it right (losing resolution/changing colors).
To give you an idea of what I'm running into, look at 4 logo submissions I have 'processed'
this 1 (http://modemsite.com/old/_logo1.asp)
This 2 (http://modemsite.com/old/_logo2.asp)
This 3 (http://modemsite.com/old/_logo3.asp)
This 4 (http://modemsite.com/old/_logo4.asp)
(I'm taking the logo as posted here, copy to clipboard, pasting in Microsoft Image Composer 1.5; cutting out exactly 200x75 and 200x45 sections, and saving as .gif using 'web solid' setting with white as transparent color.)
Am I doing something wrong?
Palmer
01-20-2003, 08:49 AM
The color change are the limitation of the gif format. You can only have 256 colors. The warping that is occuring is from the format that you are saving them needs to be vector. Try the .wmf extension, that should work, then change the size then try to save it as a transparent gif.
If I were doing it i would just take a screen shot of the top left of your site then paste in the logo. It won't look perfect but you'll get a general idea and it won't take as long.
Whoever you choose will make the changes at no charge to the colors and the size of the logo. They will make it work in your design because that was one of your requirements.
Regarding the site being down, once again I apologize. It almost seems to be a network problem, it goes in and out. Sometimes for just seconds. Regardless, everything is transfered over to the new server other than the database of the forum. Should make the transfer to the new server within days.

Well, here goes -
I'm going to choose Sparkie's design with 'full speed ahead'
but, with a modification (if that's OK w/ everyone) to the typeface. I want a (more serious) typeface, and maybe 2, 1 or 0 lines through the dem. (And, making it look ok into 2 split .gifs).
