Hi Guys and Girls
I used to be a designer on this site so know how much talent there is. Also, I am subscribed to this topic and basically always online, so I'll almost definitely be able to answer all your qs and provide feedback within a few hours. (14 hours or so max as I am in UK, time difference etc)
Project Summary
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
page0
What type of product or service do you offer?
Training DVDs. You know how you get training manuals for stuff that are really huge and you have to read them all and its boring, well we have DVDs instead, hence the name 'page0' (pronounced page zero) - because there aren’t any pages, you can just learn through watching. These are for software applications - e.g. photoshop etc.
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
Attention, an identity and a clear message
What are your long term goals?
To get everyone buying our stuff, from individuals, to huge companies and for people to know our logo and company name.
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
June 9th 2006
Audience Profile
Please describe your existing audience
Men and women, mainly men. Nearly all British. Primarily either designers, people studying computing at college, people who are unemployed and want to learn new skills or older 'silver surfers'. So a very broad audience in terms of age.
Who would you like to add to your audience?
Large companies, we want to appleal to the individual, but still have a professional enough image to applea to big companies.
Perception/Tone/Guidelines
What type of logo would you like?
BIG impact, don't want bog standard thing, want something that's gonna stand out. Also modern, I like modern. Afterwards we're gonna get someone to animate the logo in after effects, so it needs to be reasonably ok for animation so people can make it 3D later (MAYBE) using your Ai files or something like that, so it shouldn’t be something like a photo or something which would be impossible to animate.
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo?
No, whatever you want.
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
Not really
Communication Strategy
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
there arent any pages, its more exciting than reading a book, watch, learn, (whatever you want) professional is the main thing, I want the logo to be iconic and instantaneously recognisable like the old logo for The Guardian, though this is too old fashioned for us : http://www.satnewspapers.ro/img/logo/The_Guardian.gif
We both Love this logo also: http://www.designoutpost.com/gallery/showpic.php?aid=44&uuid=35&pid=149
What is your tagline or slogan?
Training Solutions
We would like in a font style how the word 'LevelFive' is written here to write the slogan maybe:
http://www.designoutpost.com/gallery/showpic.php?aid=44&uuid=35&pid=149
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
We are professional, innovative, modern and appeal to everyone as we are affordable.
Where will your new logo be used?
On DVDs, on brochures, on our website etc
Competitive Positioning
What sets you apart from your competitors?
We're British, we're more in touch with our end users
Targeted Message
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company
Learning with out reading
I always write too much and it's boring, so here's my top tip summary:
- Big Impact - will stand out from other's on the shelf
- No Pages! - it's a DVD, you don't have to read loads of crap to use it
- Professional
- Modern
- Innovative

Please let me know if this is close to what you need. Simple enough or too simple?

I'm not too keen on the gold colour. The B+W one looks pretty cool though, it is good that the logo is still clear when small. Bit too simple maybe.
I would also say that the 0 at the end, it's not clear that it is the number 0. Like my business partner's logo, it looks just like a circle. I think because it's pronounced 'page zero', it's important to emphasise that it's a number not a letter.
Love your pixelsystem.com site though. I've seen from looking at the other logos that have been designed on this site that there are set 'styles', I'd say maybe try a bit more modern. Could have it like a page number, page 0 of 0 was an idea we had.
Also, not sure where the PMS warm gray 3C that you reference appears in the logo.
pixelsystem
06-03-2006, 12:18 PM
How about now? The "3D" tilted circle is closet to a zero, the font is modern and the whole tilt gives it a forward thinking angle. Let me know what you think.
http://www.pixelsystem.com/outpost/p0_002.jpg
The gry was a slight stroke. Did not come out well when exported for web, i removed it.

I probably prefer the first one, but still is not really the style I'm aiming for. I don't really like the orange now.
I don't really like this style of your design work: http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showthread.php?p=213782#post213782

I prefer the latest one least have to say, sorry for the negative comments, I'll try and give some indication as to the styles I like when they hit me. Not too keen on the futuristic feel, prefer more like modern, but quite hard to explain it.
pixelsystem

No problems at all. The more feedback the better. If not i, someone will get the logo to look as you want it so what matters is the end result.
JakSmit
06-03-2006, 01:01 PM
Ok, I'm not gonna prejudice anything as I think he designs logos for this site also. But I like the style of the logos on this guy's page:
http://www.rajasandhu.com
Though some of them are a bit too much maybe.
I think what it is about his logos is that they are giving your brand a bit of personality, where as the first 3 entries you've done so far would probably be more like a hosting company's logo to me. Thanks for the time you've spent so far though
pixelsystem
06-03-2006, 01:04 PM
Lets try something different:
http://www.pixelsystem.com/outpost/p0_004.jpg
JakSmit
06-03-2006, 01:10 PM
yeah, I like that a lot more than the ones before. Maybe wouldn't stand out enough though. My business partner also thought the gothic sort of fonts don't really represent modern or something.
pixelsystem
06-03-2006, 01:15 PM
And, although you mention "page 0", i just wanted to run this by you so that you have a visual of an "icon" and a "name". More of a stronger branding symbol:
http://www.pixelsystem.com/outpost/p0_005.jpg
pixelsystem
06-03-2006, 01:19 PM
Combining with the above "icon" idea with your initial "page 0" specification we get the following logo:
http://www.pixelsystem.com/outpost/p0_006.jpg
Still very clear to read when even extremely small, elegant and modern at the same time. What do you think?
JakSmit
06-03-2006, 01:21 PM
yeah I like that. It looks cool. Not too sure about the 'page zero' font though. Also would prefer it not to mention the word zero anywhere, just the number. I dunno the 0 shape could be a dvd or it could have a book which is just the cover no pages, that sort of thing. Or maybe a DVD on a book rack, these are just abstract ideas, but latest certainly better than the initial designs.
pixelsystem
06-03-2006, 01:42 PM
I was just thinking... if the idea is a complete opposite of a book (0 pages), why even mention the idea of a book at all? As far as DVD format goes... if there is a possibility that you will be offering downloads of the material (or even podcasts) why limit yourself to DVDs on your logo... this is just my thinking, trying to cover all current and future needs. What do you think?
JakSmit
06-03-2006, 01:46 PM
ok sure, just thinking of different ideas to give it a bit of 'personality' as at the moment is a bit anonmous, could really be a logo for anything.
pixelsystem
06-03-2006, 01:50 PM
Here is another variation: The font is more "page-like". The background behind the "0" is in shape of a page or a document.
http://www.pixelsystem.com/outpost/p0_007.jpg
As for giving it more association, i may be wrong but the product is "teaching material" so maybe its a good idea to add a simple tag line like "simply learn" or "watch & learn".? If you want to add a symbol for a DVD or a book, it can be done, just trying to see if that will backfire in the long-run.
JakSmit
06-03-2006, 02:03 PM
yeah sure I understand. I do prefer the concept of having an 'icon' to represent it. the new font is better than the old one.
JakSmit
06-03-2006, 02:22 PM
Not too sure about the navy colour, not that modern.
005 is the best so far

hi nhr. pretty clever logo design, I like how you've related it to the brand and joined up some of the letters etc. but one thing that I would stress is that the company name is page0 - you just say is page zero. So we wouldn't like the word zero actually in it.
Not sure about the colours. Bit of a dull colour scheme, we want our logo to stand out from everything else around. Like if it was in a magazine, that it would jump out at you. Nothing is restricting you to one colour either.
I like it though, is def a good first entry from you.
Thank you :)
Here is concept more like your:

06-03-2006, 03:41 PM
ok cool work. Standing out more and I'm liking the shape of the 0,
ideas: maybe try a dvd style that has a hole in the middle of the dvd. try different fonts - less of the futuristic, more of the modern (ie present) - (as at the moment looks maybe a bit like a games console logo or something) and a selection of modern colours.
on the right track though. We prefer the selection of the left, if it did have an outline it would need to be thinner as the thick logo makes it seem a bit cheap looking we feel - like candy bars or something, we like the effects of the double colour on the left though, I've seen this on a few different designs and think it looks cool.
My business partner thinks that effect would look cool with the font he used: http://www.abstractfonts.com/search/danube
but no one else feel restricted to this as this is one of the only futuristic style fonts we like, all the rest we like modern (present day modern).

Give me some time, i will post some of my thoughts. Thank you.

Thank you again (and again...) :)
JakSmit
06-03-2006, 04:19 PM
Ok, not too keen on this second set, the outline now seems too thin (picky eh!) as it gives the font a sort of jagged outline look.
Of the three, the best is probably the top colour set.
My business partner said could have have a look using the font he used (I've posted it) with the same effects as the top one - though as I said, would prefer to move away from this sort of retro/futuristic/arcadey style but he'd like to see what it would look like with his font. Would also be good to see a few different colours, first batch of colours look cool. Here is a link to the font again:
http://www.abstractfonts.com/search/danube
so first one (with the jagged outline sorted out) is the best of the second batch.
prefer the recent font as it's not italic

we both LOVE this logo:
http://www.designoutpost.com/gallery/showpic.php?aid=44&uuid=35&pid=149
Both definitely like the font in this one
Now I need to ask:
Font: Danube (I have it)
Effects: from version 2.1 (lights and outline)
Colors: from 3.0 (first set)
Right?
Thank you in advance.
JakSmit
06-03-2006, 04:33 PM
well he likes that dunube font, but we both really love the font style used on the wording saying levelfive in this one: http://www.designoutpost.com/gallery/showpic.php?aid=44&uuid=35&pid=149
I'll just check with him
JakSmit

Ok, can we take a look at
you dont need to both with the pantone or whatever if you dont want to. this is just so we can check what that looks like.
but we both really love the font style used to write LevelFive on that example I showed, not set on this danube font.
OK, OK...
The name of this font is "Unfur".

please see attached pic. if you switch a highlight to the other side it looks more like a DVD - obviously you need to resize it etc but the example should show the idea.

4.0, I like the font. G is a bit weird as could be confused with a c or an @ sign. but like the pae. I think the stroke it too thick though.
JakSmit
06-03-2006, 04:54 PM
5.0 can we scrap the stroke please, we dont like the stroke outline
JakSmit
06-03-2006, 04:56 PM
All designers: for all of them, can we try something like, the font used to write 'LevelFive' (not the one saying soltutions)
http://www.designoutpost.com/gallery/showpic.php?aid=44&uuid=35&pid=149
To add a subtitle of 'Training Solutions' below it.
So nhr, please scrap the thick stroke, no thick strokes.
please add the slogan and also try the effect we suggested on the dvd as one highlight either side seems to work better than two on one side. Maybe check the kerneling so the letters arent so close together also. Thanks
Both fonts in one design:

Hi ok, now we talking, this is looking good.
prefer the orange one prob. Can we switch the 'training solutions' subtitle to like a light grey or something. Something more subtle, so it's clearly secondary and your focus is on the page 0 bit.
Can we maybe see a few different colour combos please. I like the light blue (how it is like a DVD reflection) but not the green (purple with the blue might look cool) and the orange is pretty cool. THANKS!
Of course :)

ok, cool, thanks for taking the time to update them.
yellow one, yellow is ok, don't like the grey.
We like blue one best. We're going with blue.
We dont really like the dark purple shade thats in the middle though.
Please could you though change the 'middle, darker' shade of purple to maybe a dark blue or something. So it goes from dark blue inside to the same purple outside? Just a few different options on this blue version, then I think that's us done tinkering. Thanks

everyone else, please submit any ideas you have and I'll check them tomorrow.
Like that, I hope:

ok thanks very much, sorry to be picky but colours are def one of the most important bits.
at the moment it is maybe looking a bit too dark, top half looks cool.
maybe a lighter darker blue or a darker variation on the top blue or something.
thanks

ok other designers, this is no way won by nhr yet. what we've got at the moment is very similar to the original design, just with a disk image at the end. We are also a bit concerned about whether the disk is obvious as a 0. we think that people might read it as 'page' and just think that's an icon or something. So please feel free to submit entries to give us options and we'll give our feedback. Thanks

castell - I like your work but I'm not too keen on this one I'm afraid. I think that I should have made it more clear that the image on the first post was one I DIDN'T really like :( I've taken it down now
Don't feel restricted to that font, it's not the only one we like.
I think the main thing that I'm not too keen on is the colour scheme. And also maybe the positioning of the 'training solutions' subtitle, though I do like the font that you've used for for the subtitle.
It's just where the subtitle is at the moment it would read training solutions page0, would probably prefer the subtitle below it. Also, just that it doesn't all fit in a clean rectangle, like if the training solutions stayed where it was, I would prefer the look so that the top of the T lines up with the top of the disk. Hope I'm making myself sound clear. Thanks for submitting an entry.

I think the only trouble with having a sort of cartoon disk is that the people we have shown the logos to so far have thought that it looks like a logo for a record company or computer game or something.
Also the bright colours can make the company look cheap. Where as the colours and this sort of design looks really professional: http://www.designoutpost.com/gallery/showpic.php?aid=44&uuid=35&pid=149

Here's an idea my business partner came up with to maybe give some inspiration. Bassically, the bright colours and cartoony feel seem a bit cheap, want to see if we can get a more 'professional' image. Thanks

Ok. Feedback time.
gig - thanks for the entry, but I'm not too keen on the thick outlines or colour scheme. I wouldn't feel restricted to that initial idea.
Kassi - very much like the logos. Our favourite layout is 1d and favourite colour being either the blue or the orange. Would it be possible please to provide the version 1d in the different colours you used for the others. Also, an idea - if the centre of the 0 could have a bit of white showing through, that might look cool, I’m not sure whether it would look weird, but just so the 0 was hollow, or maybe adding that outline bit to the middle also or something.
Ratbaggy - I think that the 'e' definitely is an improvement on the one from the original character set. My business partner likes it, but then again, its quite close to his idea! I checked out your site, which has some really cool work. If you get time, do you think that you might be able to present some different options, using that same font if you like, but including ‘training solutions’ as a subtitle. Thanks
Taldo - Like the logo. The line with training solutions below it is pretty much perfect. We like the size of ‘training solutions’ and the font used for that. Not too keen on the font used for the ‘page0’ bit though, the p and the g characters with the square tops mainly put me off that font. The paper with a cross through it looks cool, we like the two-colour highlight crossing through it. If possible, we would like you to provide one or two other ideas as we think that you are definitely on the right track. Maybe making any icons that accompany the text also represents a 0. I.e if I was using this logo I’d probably make the strike through the 0 a different shade from the actual circle or squeeze the circle a bit.
Overall, thanks very much for the entries; they are getting more towards our ideas.
THANKS

for one, an actual zero. for two, a visual representation of the phrase: "dvd training solutions."
<br>

<img src="http://carlos.errorproductions.com/outpost/page-0.png">
<br>
the thought process is to create what i consider (in my united states' view) as a "UK branding"--in the style of the teachyourself language series, which has a very understated logo, but produces a brand from that by virtue of a careful colour scheme, and a consistent/paintstaking layout aesthetic.

do let me know what you think.

feedback:
carlos - not feeling at all. We really like your other work, like the one you did for inkpad etc. but not really this. You did a cool write-up to support the logo but still just not the right style. The overal idea of splitting into a shape of two halves isnt bad. We don't really like the disk image though. I'm sorry, your work really is cool though, just don't really like this one.
Ruairi - Really on track. Probably our favourite so far along, closely followed by Kassi's. Don't like the yellow version. Blue version is cool. I think the 'training solutions' bit needs some work though. We really like the 'training solutions' how taldo did it. It's just that with your one the R doesn't look completley like an R and its also not readable at a smaller size how you show it. We really like the creativity and how you've related it to the brand though.
Please can we ask you to try sorting out the training solutions bit and show it to us in a few different colours, like red, orange, green etc. Thanks
Paula - Thanks very much for submitting an entry. I knew that you would submit something different to everyone else. However I'm not really too keen on it, I think the font is different to how we like and not too keen on the colour scheme. Is certainly different though.

Hi Jack,
here are the variations.
Thank you.
JakSmit
06-06-2006, 03:43 PM
graphxguy - thanks for the entry. Def. emphasises the 0 aspect. Is not really our style though. Seems more suited to like an arcade game sort of feel.
Ruairi - is looking great. We have narrowed it down to the orange or the blue. Please could you provide us with a brighter, more vivid version of the orange please as we feel the orange you have used is too dark/pale. Kassi and Taldo have a more vivid orange.
we want to have the page text same vividness as 0 (outer rim) but keep the inter pic inside within the 0 keep the same as it is just now (lighter) same with training solutions text. As we want to make it look like page0 (making this bit stronger so stands out more). The inner pic in 0 and training solutions text are less important so should be lighter as they are. page should have the same colour bottom and top as 0 does bottom and top (so you would scrap PMS 2915 C for the left bit, replace with PMS 293 C I think it is), hope I am making myself clear.
Thanks

Ruairi - Ok thanks. Just to clarify 'training solutions' should not be dark, it should be the same as your last blue one. Also the thing is too dark overal now, we want it to stay looking as cool as the first blue, but with the 0 less prominent so page and 0 look equal.
The shades of orange really arent our thinking as they are like mustard or brown colour. Kassi has used PMS 151 and Taldo has used PMS 1385 U, these are more our sort of orange thinking. THANKS
Hi, let me know how are these.
Thank you.

Ok, just to update everyone. We will be selecting a winner today probably and at the moment from what we've shown to people and asked their opinions, the favourite at the moment are the two most recent from Kassi.
I've got no problem extending the contest by however long is required if people let me know that they need extra time to submit an entry, in particular Raja or mbleigh who I invited and ThatOneGuy who has just said that he hopes to enter. Thanks

Hi Carlos
Thanks for taking the time to make a new entry. I like the top right icon how it has the gloss effect, but I'm not too keen on the left side really. Thanks for coming up with something new as you said though. I wouldn't concentrate on my business partner's ideas though, I hate what he likes!
I can't leave you :)

Hi NHR. The 0 looks quite cool and training solutions bit def looks good. I think still that it doesn't have the same 'presense' as the more recent logos made by others.

BlueCherryGraphics - Thanks for taking the time to make two entries. I like the first one how you haven't copied the style of everyone else.
Ok, considering no updates. We would like to select Kassi as the winner. We are very impressed with the entry considering nothing in the portfolio on her site is anything like what we like. We think that the logo looks really smooth and professional.
Please can we take this into the revisions forum now where we'd just like to have a look at a few different colours.
thanks

Thanks also to everyone else who submitted entries. There were some good ones and I think mainly that our advice was a bit rubbish as we didn't really know what we wanted!
Kassi - I don't know if this gets moved into the seperate forum first or what, but basically we thought it would look cool to see a few different colours so that we can have it fade between colours or something: i.e. red, pink, purple etc thanks v much. - Jack

Thanks Paul!
Hi Jack,
The moderators will move the thread to the revisions forum, but in the meantime we are still able to move forward with any changes. I will prepare some colour variations for you to consider.
