OK guys and girls, this is the first time I am making use of DesignOutput.com so please be gently with me. I've heard good things and have a short time scale on this project and no time to do the design work.

My client is a farm who have recently been given a grant to extend their facilities in order to manufacture Rape Seed Oil. They are also creating a new brand for this product from their current business (of strawberry farming)

The presence of the site is to be:

* Yorkshire (UK) farm product
* Quality
* For the discerning user
* Stylish/contempory
* Well designed
* but still portray "family" business
* Professional
* The site is to hold emphasis on the logo in order to help brand the product
* Be an advertisement for the product (but not just a flyer)
* Include flash image which transitions between shots of valley (N.B. will not need flash creating just place holder)
* Use themes from the bottle shape / label design (probably that on page 4 of pdf)

Suggested colour scheme:

* "Whisky" - oil colour
* Olive
* Follow those in logo / bottle label designs

Content Pages (for nav bar):

* Homepage
* Product information page
* Recipes
* List of stockists
* News + Press
* Contact form (with details for ordering)

I have attached a ZIP with a load of images they took (they prefer this to using expensive stock images). I doubt many will be usable but please have a look. The pr firm will be sending me the flower they cut up for the logo designs in next day or 2. If you find any stock images worth using please let me know of approximate costs for consideration.

Also included is the logo design in jpg format (awaiting high res from pr company) and also some sample product logos.

Here are some sights of similar product and my/pr companies thoughts on them in relation with the design they are after:

http://www.hillfarmoils.com/
Similar product, site is too amaturish and too much like an advert.

http://www.farrington-oils.co.uk/
Nice design but poorly marketed, not really advertising the product properly (wrong type of flowers for rape seed)

http://www.carotino.co.uk/
Professional site but a little too corporate and not enough emphasis on the product

http://www.beechdene.co.uk

I am ideally after a xhtml/css mock up (preferably in .net 2) but would rather do that myself if designer isn't ofay with that. Otherwise a PSD/Fireworks PNG would be usable. Will discuss details with designer once chosen. I am looking for a homepage and an single internal page which can be reused for all the above content pages and subpages

Once I get any better images from PR firm I will post here, so watch this space.

The time scale is aiming for an end of month completion for the project but that will include development time after the final design (to tie in cms system). So the sooner the better.

Ok Severner here is the feedback straight from the horses mouth:

First impressions OK.

But dont like the Menu at the top, I would prefer it be button boxes together at the side. Possibly using the the V from the valley as the button?
Will those pictures swap around toanother set as the site is open?

I looked at Beechdene.co.uk and this looked good. I just feel that ours is a bit standard. What do you think? Am I being too ambitious for a small farming enterprise?

I really like the use of the graphics in your design. But now I have seen the beechdene site I think that something between the two would be ideal. Something a little less corporate and a little more "farmly/homely"

Hey there,

Thanks for the feedback, you can never be to ambitious and i'll see what i can come up with mixing the two styles.

My idea for the photos was they would focus on the product (the oil bottle) expand out to a full shot of the bottle and the photographs of flowers/land would transition between one and other.

I'm pretty sure i get what you mean in terms of less corporate and more towards the family/homely stlye and hope i can produce something nice for you.

Hopefully i'll have something to show you late tommorow.

Thanks very much,

Sev

Thanks for your input Pod, again I have sent the images over to my client for their feedback.

Looking at them, I definately prefer the second of the two. I like the way its going but think it needs a little more work. For starters I would feel comfortable putting Times New Roman on a website

Will give you more feedback once I get it from my client

Thanks

Pod

Here are the comments from my client

We like the 2nd prototype here. The black is a bit big,
and should it be green to follow through. We like the V as the tick.
Should the photos be slightly larger. Looking Good!
welcome.

Sorry for the long delay from my client but here are their comments

Having considered the design submissions we believe that "pods" inner design, now set against a green background, will form a good basis
for development.

Please would you consider the following and let us have a revised
draft for the Home Page:

* Depth of the type area – we would like to see this area as a
deeper area on the screen so that the scroll bar is avoided –
maybe take a look at prototype number 1 in this respect.
* We like the position of the WVF logo top left and this is
undergoing some slight modifications at present – we will
forward the latest version asap.
* The tick mark against the page that the visitor is looking at is a great idea and we want to use this as much as possible through out the site
* Please replace the list of pages with:
o Home
o About Us
o Rapeseed Oil – nutritionally superior
o Cooking and recipes
o Where to buy
o News & Press
o Events & Shows
o Contact Us
* Please retain the graphic strip with the bottle and the rape
seed flower on all pages – how will this work on the deeper
image area of the pages?
* Please produce an actual home page with the following copy –
this is not completely final as we are working to include as
many key words as we can - but will give us a good impression of
the overall effect – we will need an image here – please suggest.

*Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil *

*is farm-produced in **Yorkshire** *

*by **Wharfe** **Valley** Farms*

* *

Yorkshire’s finest extra virgin cold pressed rapeseed oil is grown,
pressed and bottled by hand at Wharfe Valley Farms.

This highly nutritional oil has many benefits for the health-conscious
who are concerned about their food content, making it ideal for salad
dressings, roasting, stir frying and marinading.

* Naturally rich in Omega 3 and Vitamin E
* Half the saturated fat of Olive Oil
* High in monounsaturated fats
* Contains no artificial preservatives and is trans fat and GM free
* Suitable for a variety of diets – vegetarian, gluten-free,
Kosher and Halal

I am a little busy at the moment but will respond with my thoughts later tonight

tigermain

Firstly thank you everyone that contributed made my 1st design outpost experience very reassuring.

Thanks pod seems my client is very busy at the moment, but in Saturdays mail I recevied payment for the job so it is all go.

They are happy to go ahead with your latest design.

We are aiming to be XHTML compatible and reach WCAG 1 so if you can a cut up to that kind of level would be appreciated.

I will post some minor amendments later once the thread has been moved to the revisions forum

I am glad to choose my design I am looking forward for hearing from you for revisions

Pod,

Here are my revisions:

- The flower image needs to be a much higher resolution (I assume thats possible with what I have provided otherwise let me know)

- Can you add a drop shadow/border to the out frame just to make it stand out a little more from the background

- Keep the text of the menu as text rather than a menu, I will use CSS for the V image for the bullet

- Despite my clients request, I will still want the right hand frame to be scrollable "if" the content is too large

- I will either be putting the XHTML and WCAG standard logos at the bottom of the menu, or having a transition image of some of the photos they provided (just so you know)

Thanks again I look forward to receiving the design.

Hi tigermain
I used this pic for design if you can provide a good flower image that will be great I think its not resolution problem most pics have a focus & exposure problems..

Thanks

Excuse lack of reply havent been getting email alerts for some reason

Thanks the drop shadow makes a huge difference (imho) and the new photo looks a lot cleaner.

What you have said you'll provide will be fine (as long as theres not a table in sight ;)).

Can you just increase the size of the thumb in the content during creation (I dont need to see it again) you could probably go twice as big but I'll leave it to your judgement.

Other than that please go ahead with the cutting

All received and done site is now in preview at:

http://dev.webdynamix.biz/wharfevalley

Please collect payment

P.S Can I suggest pod that you learn proper CSS/XHTML as doing layouts in tables is BAD design practice, as you'll see I cut it up into a few DIVs instead. This makes it "better" but also more accessible as tables "should" only be used for displaying data and would be misinterpreted by screen readers etc

Hi Tigerman
Thank you for preview it is look nice :)
I am a newbee on css/xhtml I think I am on the design side this business I think designers and coders are very diffrent.. designers are not great coders, coders are not great designers for best solution we must working together..

Thanks
