(Admin code added by Palmer - H6080435)

Hi boys and girls,

I’m just now rounding up a design contest in the logo forum for our new product, and now it’s time to have the site itself designed.

The final logo will not be selected until tomorrow morning, but if you check out the contest (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=4&t=1125&s=) you’ll see that the colours are very similar, so it should be enough to get started. Also, when I announce the winner tomorrow morning, I will post it here as well.

PRODUCT

The product, named “EiendomAdmin” (meaning “real estate administration”) is a web-based real estate management application, helping real estate owners, administrators, brokers and buyers communicate better and more efficient.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Though the product is meant to help all groups mentioned above, real estate buyers will not be paying anything to use the software. So, the target audience is real estate owners, administrators and brokers.

CURRENT WEB SITE

The current web site is located at http://www.eiendomadmin.no/. No effort has been put into the design yet (except for the logo for which we ran a contest), so the main thing to look at is the placement of the various objects in relation to eachother. These should be upheld, unless you as the designer have a good reason for doing something different.

COLOUR

The colour of the web site main/content area should remain white, or at least a very pale colour for easy reading. Other than that, I would prefer the colours blue, orange, grey, white or/and black used throughout the design.

MENU

The arrows in front of the menu elements are not keepers, though some other sort of bullets are welcomed. Also, please design the menu to include an example sub-menu.

CONCEPT SKETCH

The large image on the main web site is what I will be referring to as the concept sketch. The objective of this image is to illustrate what the application is about, namely the communcation and exchange of real estate information between the real estate owner (Eier), administrator (Forvalter), broker (Megler) and buyer (Interessent).

In the center is a symbol of the software, namely a couple of screenshorts. On top of it is the text “Fra kun 249,- * pr mnd eks mva” which means “Starting at only 249,- per month ex. VAT”.

This entire image needs to be done over. The people look like they’re from the 80’s, and there’s nothing in it that makes me want to use the software. The only thing I’m fairly happy about is the placement of the objects in the image in relation to eachother.

Also, I’m thinking that the screenshots perhaps should be replaced by a box similar to the ones that client-based software come in (the packaging of the CD-ROM and documentation). I’ve seen many web-based application providers to this, and I think it increases the perceived value as well as the sense of it being and actual application.

TABLE

In addition to the existing elements, I would also like the contributions to include a table with a heading and content cell background colours (and example of a table can be found at http://www.eiendomadmin.no/pris/).

CALL US

The picture in the left row including some text and a couple of form fields, encourages viewers to contact us by phone or let us contact them (by filling out the form). I’m fairly happy with this image, but if you feel that it needs redesign to fit into your contributions, please feel free to use the picture under MATERIAL to create a new one.

SCREEN RESOLUTION

The design should be optimized for a 800x600 screen resolution.

OTHER

The web site design will also be used as the basis for the application design to keep a feeling of consistency.

MATERIAL

Just letting you know that a logo winner has been selected, namely the final contribution by ondarox (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/index.php?s=&act=ST&f=4&t=1125&hl=&#entry16451).

Once I get the logo in vector-format, I will post it here. Meanwhile, please use the one attached to the post mentioned above.

Thanks in advance !

hi!

I've attatched the logo...

Eirik mentioned he had problems opening the PSD file, I designed this in Photoshop 7 and he is using 5 and 6. If anyone knows a way to export out of photoshop to an older version please let me and him know. Or if there is a better work around, that would be good to know as well

Good Luck!

If you remove the layer effects I think that should fix the problem for older versions of photoshop. :)

Eirik,

How do you feel about turning the concept sketch into a quick flash animation?

Hi lang,

A flash intro would be great as long as it's fast loading.

Fantastic!

Since I have you online, are there any particular websites that you like? It could give me a better indication of the style you're looking for. :)

Hi lang,

I'm sort of an eye-candy vs. corporate-look person.

Here are my favorites from your portfolio:

Willow Host (http://www.designoutpost.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=374&sessionid=960e6948be57a35a92bebeca9bce1903)
Harborhost.com (http://www.designoutpost.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=348&sessionid=960e6948be57a35a92bebeca9bce1903)
Time2Test (http://www.designoutpost.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=313)

Here's (http://www.templatemonster.com/show.php?templ=2317&cat_type=search&type=1&arg1=2317&arg2=&order=date) a web site template I really like. Colours, the design, everything!

Hi guys,

I'm starting to get a little worried that no contributions will be submitted in time for the deadline I've set. :( Please let me know if you are working on a contribution, and aprox. when it will be ready.

Thanks in advance !

Hi Martin,

Boy, don't I feel like an idiot. I've been checking my Email every five minutes looking for notifications of new posts to this thread, and when I finally visit the forums, I find out that you've added a post several hours ago.

Anyhow, thanks for your first contribution. I really like the design (alot!), but the elements will need some rearranging.

1. The header currently takes up too much space which I'll be needing for content. Here's a suggesion on how to solve it:

- Move the logo to the upper, left corner
- Remove "latest news" from the top bar and, alternatively, place it somewhere else (I might not need a latest news column at all).
- Remove the company slogan.
- Perhaps remove the top, orange bar and put the form fields "on top of" (layer-wise) the building.
- Move the menu below the header.

2. Please include a sub menu.

3. Please include a table.

4. Please use less formatting on the text labels of the menu as they need to be generated dynamically by a script (which means we're limited to CSS).

In general, I think I want to stay with a "top bar, left bar, content area" layout (the way the web site (http://www.eiendomadmin.no/) currently is) as the menu will br growing in lentgh (reason for the left bar), I need alot of space for the content (and the web-based application), and it's a common layout and therefore more userfriendly.

So, would you be as kind as to move things around according to my wishes and give it another go? Thanks in advance !

what do you think?

Hi again Martin,

We're definetly getting closer!

However, there are some more changes that I would like to see.

- The header is still to tall. It's needs to be about 2/3 of its current size.
- Please remove the table as it won't be featured on the front page after all.
- The picture and phone number should be visible on all pages, so it might be best to put them in either the header or the left row (the latter is preferred).
- The software box needs to look more like a software box (I really like the box in this template (http://www.designoutpost.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=217) by ondarox).
- Also, I would like to have the software surrounded by people who represent its users(like in my original sketch) to make it less techy and more human.
- Since the design will be used throughout the site (including the web application), there can be only one content column. On the front page, however, it might be possible to have the concept sketch on the left and the text on the right, or the other way around. And BTW: The text you've copied from the site is actually the product features, so we need only one section for those.

Thanks again !

By the way, I tried something a little different for the diagram as i thought the arrows and the people was a bit too common :)

Hi Martin,

It's great to see that, with each contribution, the quality of the design increases!

Some minor changes are left and then I (probably :) ) won't bother you anymore.

Both my picture and and the box I'm "in" are a little too round around the edges.

Please include the text "Et produkt av" associated with the Netmaking logo, which means "A product by".

Please increase the size of the application box, and decrease the size of the boxes attached to it (as well as moving the shadow of the boxes proportionally closer to the boxes themselves). Also, I would like to see one more of the attached boxes in orange (perhaps the bottom right, in a paler shade of orange) to prevent giving the upper left box unintended attention.

Finally, please include the design as seen in a browser greater than 800 x 600 (meaning whether it will be aligned left or in the center, and what, if any color or texture, will surround it).

Hi Eirik,

I am glad you like the design.....I like the way it has turned out myself :)

I have made those changes you requested and for the mockup I am assuming it will be aligned to the centre of the screen with a small gradient fading to white or very light blue for the background.

Let me know what you think.

Martin

Hi guys,

Thanks for your latest contributions. Here are my comments.

Martin
The lower, right box is a little too yellow (as apposed to pale orange). Also, the text “Et produkt av” is too flashy. It should be the same size as the body text, and either in black or grey (and perhaps to the left of the logo, below the dotted line you’ve removed). Other than that, the design is looking great!

Cary
I think you’ve really nailed the concept sketch. However, that willy sadly only be visible at the main page. And as for the rest of the design (the left column and header) I feel that the design is a little bit too plain. Also, the menu doesn’t seem like it would handle more menu elements than it currently contains.

Brian
My first impression was that you had gone a little overboard with the houses/arrows, having used them both around the people-pictures, in the header and as arrows poining towards the application. Neither do I like the image below (layer-wise) the log in form fields.

Also, as with Cary’s design, I find your contribution to be a little too plain, especially the header.

Thanks for your contributions, guys. Unless something extraordinarly occurs, I will announce the winner tomorrow morning as planned.

Hi Eirik,

I'll work on an update tonight. The menu would be able to fit as many items as needed, but I'll change the design to make that more apparent.

Thanks,
Cary

I can do anything you'd like with the left nav bar - the background color of each link can be changed on mouseover, each link section can expand to show a submenu (in which case, the orange arrow would change to point down), etc. I think it's a solid and corporate look while being fun at the same time. Let me know what you think B)
