Hello Everyone!

I would like to thank every designer who participates in my contest, as you all are very talented. I would also like to thank Palmer from the outpost network for having a wonderful website and helping me with my questions. Currently, I am designing a website for an online wine store for selling Illinois Wine & Accessories. The name of the company will be Illinois Wine Cellar. I need the logo done before I can start on the site, because the logo will determine the colors used on the site. When the website is done, the website will be located at www.illinoiswinecellar.com

I do understand that designing a logo isn't the easiest thing in the world, so therefore, I will explain as much as I can in what type of logo I need, and answer any questions any of you might have. I will also participate in giving as much as feedback as I can to those who post their logo samples. I believe that when designing something for a client, you need to know likes and dislikes and reasons for them, so here they are.

To get an idea of Logo's I dislike take a look at these:
http://www.winerackstore.com - I shouldn't have to explain..
http://www.vinefinds.com/?iorb=4764
http://store.yahoo.com/topwine - I don’t care for the boxed in logo types.
http://www.wine.com – For such a big site, the logo has poor use of colors and just doesn’t look right..
http://www.winehq.com/ - I don’t like the font type, nor the wine glass they have, could have been done better..

http://www.premierwines.com/ <- I like the drawling of the wine glass, but this logo is way to plain

********************
And for my favorite of course, check out illinoiswine.org for their logo. I like this logo because the use of colors in it, the drawling of wine glass and grapes next to it. This logo is very simple, and in my opinion, it's one of those logos you'll remember. I don't want to copy their logo or anything, but it's a good start for ideas.
********************

Here's something to remember when doing the logo...

*Something simple, something people will remember perhaps.

*Background should be white

*Use your imagination, use colors & fonts that you think look good. Lighter colors will probably be more appropriate in this situation. (Light purples, light grey) Again, the colors on illinoiswine.org are nice. You can use different fonts for the 3 different words if you think it looks good.. It may need to be typed long ways because of the fact that Illinois Wine Cellar is a long name, and will need to fit on the layout that winestuff.com has, so if it’s tall up and down then I’ll have a lot of open space in the header.

*Logo will be used for the web, letters, business cards and possibly logos. (So I will probably need a .eps file from winner)

*A logo that will look good on the layout that winestuff.com has, as I believe this layout on this site will be similar to the one I use on my website, so the logo should look good when small.

*I don’t have a slogan at the moment, I don’t know if we’ll have one, but if you think a slogan would look good with your logo sample, you can make one up in the place that you think it should be, otherwise, if we do come up with a slogan, we can place it somewhere else on the website.

*You can draw graphics such as wine glasses, bottles, grapes, or anything that comes to mind. But don’t overdue it, it needs to be simple, but extraordinary..

*Prize is $50

*Of course, the winner can post the final logo on their website or portfolio if they'd like.

I don't have a deadline set, as I want to give everyone time to post their samples that want to. I would like to pick a winner by August 26th (2 weeks from today). But if I see something I really like, I will give a 2 day notice before I end early so everyone gets a chance to post.

Good Luck! I will be looking forward to working with everyone! If you have questions, please reply and I will get to them as soon as possible.

A simple and effective design...

Sparkie, thanks for your logo.. I'm looking more of a smaller logo, something that would go long ways.

The graphics are bigger then the text. I think the text needs to blend in with the graphics, and probably be

about the same size.

I like the grapes, It may look better with more leaves.. Maybe instead of using green, use a greyish color..

I think the colors and layout of the logo on illinoiswine.org look really good..

Thanks,
chris

Dynagirl - I like to colors you used, very nice.. I also like the crayon drawling look.. I think the wine bottle is to big, and should probably be shortened down. I also like the font that you used.. I don't know that I like the lines in the logo.. they look good.. but I'd like to see it without it.

Namdesign - I'm glad you had fun! I think your logo almost looks to much like the illinoiswine.org logo.. It does look good.. but I don't want them to think I coppied.. Let's try a different font, but I like the colors you used. I don't like how you replaced the a for the leave.. it does look good.. but I'm not crazy about it.. Can you try adding something else along with the grapes.. perhaps a wine bottle? I like the grape design..

Sparkie - I think it's awsome how you replaced the wine glasses as a w.. It does look unique.. but were affraid that some people might not know that it's a W.. I just don't know that I like how the grapes merge with the glass... and the leaf looks to fancy for my taste..

One of the owners would like to see the state of Illinois implanted in the logo.. I doubt that it will look good.. but who knows.. so If any of you are good at drawling the illinois state or blending it in your logo, you can submit one with and without the state. It can be faded in or whatever looks best.. If it doesn't work out then don't worry about it..

Here's a pic of the state on this site
http://www.isds.org/

use your imagination..

Thanks for all of the submissions so far, your all doing a great job!

Dynagirl - also, forgot.. I like the wine glass.. but the wine bottle is shadded.. and the wine glass isn't.. so I think if we took the color out of the wine bottle and made it look the same as the wine glass.. I don't know if it would look good.. but worth a shot..

In this one, I made the bottle smaller and got rid of the staircase lines:

http://www.frobo.com/graphic_work/ilwinecellar/iwc2.gif

In this one, I also took the color out of the bottle:

http://www.frobo.com/graphic_work/ilwinecellar/iwc3.gif

And here, I changed the position of the grapes (I think it balances the color better when the bottle is empty) and moved the text to one line:

Dynagirl - Thanks for the redos so fast.. Give me a day or 2 to think on it, and what needs changed..

Taldo - Great idea, I don't know that I like the cursive I in Illinois.. I think it's a bit to distracting.. and some may not know it's an I? To fancy I guess? I do like the idea of the grapes in the background faded.. That looks great.. I think the wine glass could be taken out, just doesn't go right with the grapes.. it would probably look better with a wine bottle that blends in with the faded grapes..

I can already tell this is going to be a hard decision.. thanks everyone.. I'll be looking forward to more submissions..

Well guys, it's been 2 days and we've gotten a lot of submissions.. suprised the heck out of me.. Ondarox, I know.. It's going to be a hard decision to pick.. I don't like being the judge.. would you pick for me? lol

Dynagirl - I've put a lot of thought about your designs, I love them, but I don't know that it's going to
work well with printing and on the website, as I have to shrink everything down. Maybe I'm wrong.. But when I shrink it down in size for the website, it just doesn't look right.. I do like the bottle filled then empty.
Have any other ideas?

Namdesign- I'm still looking forward to a revision.. as I like your grape design better then any I've seen so far.. I think it would look good with
a wine bottle with it with the same type of design.. and maybe a little different font.

Coxy - I like what've done with the font, and how you took the o and put a wine bottle in it. I just think it's kind of plain
It just didn't hit me when I saw it.. I like the wine bottle design.. I like the colors too.. but when I tried shrinking it down, it didn't look good..
as I have to shrink it down for the website.

Just G - Great art work.. I love the colors too.. Is it possible by replacing one of the wine glasses with a wine bottle with the same look and color..

SBDesign.. I like your design.. especially how you put the grapes in the shape of the state.. but I don't think anyone would notice it..
The design of the grapes just didn't hit me.. I'd have to say namdesign has the best looking grape design so far.. In the logo you designed with the gray background.. I'd rather have the whole background white, and not boxed in with a color.
I like how you put the wine rack in the other logos.. it's unique.. but I don't think other people would know it's a wine rack right off the bat..

Elkootcho - Nice design.. It looks really good... but I'm not a fan of boxy logos.. I like them more open and such.. But I like the use of colors and such.. great job..
I like the font on your 2nd logo.. and I like how you swished the wine around in the glass. but the glass just isn't all there.. In your 3rd logo I don't like the shape of the v grapes..

Taldo- I like the font on the first logo better.. but just with no cursive i..
Is it possible to change the shape of the wine bottle to a more modern bottle, and blend it in the background faded with the grapes?

I hope I replied to everyone.. Lot's of sorting through.. Thanks everyone for putting your 2 cents in.. All I know, is that I couldn't do any of these logos myself.. lol
I can't even draw a stick man!

I'll be check up and seeing things progress.. It's not to late if anyone that hasn't submitted that still wants to..

Approximately what size do you think you'll need for your website? Let me know and I can shrink my existing design down so you can see how it looks. I'll also work on another design.

illinoiswinecellar
08-14-2003, 12:33 PM
Dynagirl - Probably a little bigger then the logo used at winestuff.com.. Their logo is plain.. but That's similar to the layout I'll probably be using for the site.. who knows.. I may not use that layout.. but it's always better to be on the safe side.. It'll still have to be shrunk down on business cards and stuff.. so it'll have to look good small no matter what..

Here's the image at 80 px high (text size increased from original proportions). On the left it's got the rough outlines like I'd done before, on the right is an alternate version with thin, smooth outlines:

Taldo - I like that one much better.. thanks for the revision..

dynagirl- I like the one with smoother lines better.. I think it looks much better smaller with the smooth outlines.. Thanks!

Like I said, this is going to be a hard decision.. I'll see what everyone else can do.. I believe both of your revisions are great.. and nothing needs to be changed..

Thanks,
chris

Sorry for the delay in getting back with everyone.. it's been a busy week.

Congratulations to Just G, as he has designed the winning logo. (1st submission)

It was a hard decision, as there were many great logos. We picked Just G's logo for many reasons.. The word Illinois stood out with the font that was chosen, choice of colors.
Also the wine glasses were designed with style.. B)

Anyways, Just G, you may email me the eps file, and if possible, if you did it in adobe photoshop, you can also send me the psd file so I can make any changes in the future... my email is chris@imaginedesigns.net

If I could of chosen more then one winner, I would of picked several winners.

Thanks to all who participated,

Chris
