View Full Version : Handhelds.com logo
(Admin code added by Palmer - 681905K)
Hi everyone,
I'm having a bit of lack of inspiration on a logo i am trying to create for my new website www.handhelds.com - selling handheld computers quite obviously.
The prize is $80 as mentioned, and i would like this contest wrapped up quite quickly, maybe a deadline of a week max. (19/09/03).
Im looking for a professional, not overly corporate logo. I think it could go in one of two main directions, either an integrated, easily branded logo.
Some samples of which i like are;
www.vodafone.co.uk
www.overstock.com
OR
A bit of textual/separate graphic logo such as these ones which i like;
www.memory.com
www.buy.com (although maybe a bit too simple)
www.outlet.com (not too sure about the graphic)
www.amazon.com (even though this graphic is a bit intgrated)
I hope you see roughly what i mean.
As for colours, i was thinking maybe purple (for the graphic anyway, black for te text)? although my mind is not set on anything solid at the minute.
One thing is, at the minute i am tending towards the text with some sort or graphic as mentioned. One graphic i think is quite cool is that at www.cnet.com (the white grahic of the handheld on the grey/black background near the top of the page). Although i definitely want the logo to go on a white background.
The logo doesnt have to be a vector graphic, although if you could put one together it may come in andy in the future. It should be done at 300dpi print resolution, and big enough so that if i want a big version on my site, it is easily resized.
I think thats about it, any questions just ask.

Here's a logo that's "to the point" - literally :)
The slogan is just something I put together quickly. I didn't know if you had one or not. But if you like this logo, feel free to use the slogan as well :)
Thanks for being the first one to give it a go Sparkie.
a couple of comments;
- i think i would prefer a more professional font (although not too corporate)
- not sure about the two graphics, one might work better. I wouldnt want the logo to be too cluttered.
- i like the image of the handheld pc (is that hand drawn?)
- although i like the handheld pc image, i am more drawn towards a branding symbol, or branding logo at the minute. i like the branding aspect of the handspring.com logo.etc. Although i was a bit lost for inspiration on what kind of branding symbol would convey the website best.
Thanks again!

Hi John,
As far as a branded logo goes - would you want something "handheld-like" such as a type of icon that looks as if it were from a handheld computer, or something completely different? The name "Handspring" really lends itself well to having a memorable logo. Handhelds.com, is well.. handhelds! ;)
I can see where you're having trouble coming up with a good, brandable image. But I will definitely keep working to help! :)
The branding symbol doesnt necessarily have to be directly related to handhelds, look at memory.com, amazon, com .etc.
Ideally, i would like a simple branding image, which portrays a professional image.

Here's an option...
Thanks for your entry JulieT
I think it has a lot of potential.
i didnt like the idea of a hand in the logo at the start, however this abstract view is well done.
Some suggestions;
- Could you bring the text down to the side, so the logo is rectangular and not square.
- Could you change the text to black and the font to something more professional eg. handspring, amazon, outlet.com.etc.
- Could you try one variation of the hand with different shades of purple (instead of the skin colour) as well as the current colour scheme.
- Could you make the two samples at size of about 90px high by 300-400px wide.
PS - It is handheldS.com not handheld.com :)
I would just advise any changes not to move the logo too close to that at webmagic.com. Obviously they cant copyright a hand in a logo, just to save you energy in case it moves too close to it!

My gosh--you're good; I didn't even know shared qualities with webmagic! Here are my revisions. I also added a third--I thought it might be more pleasing to the eye without the thumb.

As promised, here is the feedback from John...
JulieT
I like the new purple one better, could you use that one and experiment with some fonts close to the sample attached. Please include a TM symbol as shown also. After that, i would say thats your entry complete.
Sparkie
Not sure about the symbol on this one. I think it look too much like a child drawing. I also think ill leave out a tagline for this logo.
Taldo
I think the font goes well with the symbol. Just a couple of suggestions, could you make the .com on the same line, and the same size as the handhelds. also, could you experiment with the symbol a bit. it seems a bit dark at the minute and maybe could do with some more curves.

#1
I think ive decided to go with a branding symbol over an actual handheld picture. I do like the text and the colour scheme though.
#2
Not sure about this one, it is a bit too square. a bit of experimentation with the font and design, but i prefer the first one better and would like you to work with that if you decide to enter a revision
Just G
I like the similicity of this logo, although i think the hand is a bit rough (texture) for the look i would like for this logo. The colours work well. It would be good if i could see a revision with a much more smooth, streamlined and stylised hand in place of the e.
Thank you for all your hard work, some great logos

revision
Hi JulieT
Your revision wasnt quite what i had in mind. I have created a quick mockup to show you the lines along which i was thinking. It needs cleaned up a bit but should give you a rough idea of where i see your logo going. Maybe a play with the text would help as well.
BTW, the font for the e was Lucida Handwriting in case you need it.
i suppose the attachment would be handy :D

John--
Previously Palmer had posted a message with examples of fonts and layouts you liked--do you still want me to follow that example as well? Also, I think you might have been directing your last comment (5:07 am) at Just_G, not me. Is that correct? I wouldn't want to step on any toes :)

Yes.. we need clarification
Sorry for the confusion there.
The last comments were directed towards Just G not JulieT. Sorry about that.
For JulieT,
I would like you to add the tilt to the purple hand (the same s in the first logo). Lastly, i would like you to experiment with a couple of fonts (just 2 or 3) similar to those in the sample i posted.
Sorry,
John

Here's another version
Just G,
A couple of suggestions;
- could you smooth out the fingers a bit more
- maybe change the font (the black font)
- i think it looks a bit too busy with the red line in as well as the e. maybe that should come out
ondarox,
i like the font of the logo. the font is probably the best one ive seen which meets what im looking for. I'm not a big fan of 3d imagery, so maybe if you could convert the symbol to 2d it would look better.
more feedback to come........
radicalseed,
a bit too dark for my liking, i would get rid of the box too.
I would prefer no shadowing, and maybe if you could turn the symbol into 2d.
dynagirl,
i like the overall look of the design. colours and the feel of the symbol are great. is there any special significance to the symbol?
taldo,
as with radicalseed, the design is a bit too dark for the look of the site. maybe if you keep the text black, and liken up all the symbol colours?

Your previous comments (posted by Palmer) only mentioned my 1st and 2nd design (which were posted together), so I'm not sure if you're now commenting on my 3rd design or 4th design. I'll just explain both. Design #3 is an abstract "h". Design #4 is a representation of a handheld device and stylus.
hi dynagirl,
in my previous post i was referring to design #1 and #2 as #1, and design #3 and #2, sorry about that.
As for #4, i quite like it. Could you just finish off the stylus inside the handheld. Maybe a purple tip on the end. Also, could i see it with the font in italics?
Thanks,
John

variation of fonts
Ive had a long look over the entries, and gotten feedback from several famly members, and i can announce that the winner is ..................
JULIE T !!!!!!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!
and thanks to Palmer for the well organised contest !
I am going to do some playing with the fonts myself, so could you please email the hand symbol (the two shades of purple) with the thumb, and the tilt to john.quailATntlworld.com in a range of formats. (psd, gif, jpg and a vector format if you have one).
Also, if you wouldnt mind, could i possibly have a copy of the original orange/purple hand (with the tilt and thumb) in case i want to use it for any other parts of the site?

Thanks for choosing me! I'll get together what you need, and, yes, I can give it to you in eps--and of course I can give you the hand separately. Expect it later tonight.
Thanks again!
