Company Name: FIRST IN Solutions

Website: www.firstinsol.com (once website is up)

Project Requirements: FIRST IN Solutions, Inc. is a new start-up entity that is looking to create a corporate logo which can be used for all corporate communications, such as letterhead, business cards, websites, advertising, branding, trademarks, logowear, etc.

The company is looking for a logo that is unique and represents its focus on information technology and analysis services. Ideally, the logo will also represent all of the following:
- A sense of being the best at providing services at a reasonable price to its clients
- Supporting the “pointed end of the spear” in the fight against terrorism, where the phrase “pointed end of the spear” refers to those that put their lives on the line in foreign lands to protect our nation and its people
- Integrity, Innovation, Intelligence (note the symbolism with the word “IN”)
- “FIRST IN” often refers to Special Operations soldiers and intelligence personnel who go into a country before any conventional military action to conduct covert operations, reconnaissance, etc. Also note the play on being number one in providing solutions.
- “Solutions” refers to solving problems that may be difficult to solve, such as information sharing across agencies, using various disparate datasets to identify trends or make connections (“connecting the dots”), overcoming cultural or political differences to change an organization, etc.
- American patriotism, flag, etc

Client Focus: Providing IT and analysis expertise and solutions

Business Status: This company is a new start-up within a very competitive market, so branding and logo will need to create a positive "memory" for current and prospective clients.

Competition: Everyone from large system integrators like Lockheed Martin, CACI, SAIC, and Northrup Gruman, to many small existing entities like Abraxus, GCI, 24/7 Solutions, and others.

Discriminators: In many ways, those companies that are best organized, agile, with excellent people, skills, and experience will succeed in this market. Having top-notch benefits and pay to attract the best people is critical.

Final Comments: I am looking for creativity that meets the stated requirements to the extent possible while portraying a positive mental image. As for color, certainly red, whte, and blue would probably be good but I am open to other colors and styles. Be creative, be the best, and thanks in advance to all for their efforts.

Nice first try (no pun intended)! I kind of like the stars on the top logo with the red and blue. Patriotic, but not overkill.

I do not care for the logos with the stars going under the name as it seems to detract from the name. I'm not sure if I like the font or not.

One thing I kind of envisioned in the logo was a pointed spear of some kind maybe underlining the name or maybe going through the "First In" somehow.

Not bad though, overall.

jtolbert

A simple design, but maybe too simple for what I was looking for. The emphasis on "IN" is OK, but the real emphasis should be "FIRST IN" followed by solutions. The font used is not real appealing.

Not sure if this design conveys the technology and intelligence analysis type work that the company would be performing. I guess I was expecting something with a bit more pizazz.

Some revisions are probably needed for this one, or maybe something totally different.

Please give it another go .....

Here's revisions! :D

Nice addition of the spear-tip! I would maybe recommend trying to narrow the base of the tip just slightly, so it does not look so much like a Christmas tree (but don't straighten it out completely).

I like the new font better as well, but the "N" in the word "IN" looks to be wider than it should be. The colors like good to me, but my reviewing advisor (wife) says the red should be more red (to her it looks a bit orange). One of us has some color blindness ..... :D

Overall, it is a nice design! I am still interested in seeing what some of the other designers come up with.

I will try to provide some links to other logo designs today that might create some new ideas as well for folks.

Here are those revisions. I went just one color shade up on the red. :)

jtolbert
12-09-2006, 02:17 PM
Much better with the spear-tip - one other suggestion is to make the spear-tip a single color (maybe either a blue or a silver-metallic like the steel of a sword). The split colors seem to detract from the spear-tip itself. From a cost perspective, two colors would probably be less than three colors for letterhead, business cards, embroidery, etc.

Also, I'd would recommend removing the ", INC." and just have the word "SOLUTIONS" under the "FIRST IN" part.

The shade up in red is nice - I'd be curious to see the blue stepped up one shade as well.

Overall, this logo is a nice design concept ....

Here are the revisions. I stepped up the blue one shade.

Column 1 is all with white accent to the spear head. Column 2 is solid. Row 1 is solid blue. Row 2 is a screen of that blue (30%). Row 3 is a screen of black (40%).

Thanks for all the feedback. If I get a chance this weekend, I'll post another look.

It does cost more to print 3 color, so a screen of the blue would still be considered 2 color.

Nice set of variations .... I particularly like the logos at Row 1, Col 2 and at Row 3, Col 3. The arrow at Row 3, Col 3 might be a shade darker.

I spent a little bit of time looking at hunting arrows to see what a modern arrow might look like and found this one:

http://www.shootnhunt.com/catalog/JM/archery_supplies/broadheads/new_archery/2601625.html

While it is pretty cool looking, it might be a bit too complex in a logo that would have multi-use applications.

I may have more feedback tomorrow .... thanks for the efforts today!!!

Here's a look with that arrow. Also the two that I believe you were talking about. You listed one as Column 3 row 3.

jtolbert
12-09-2006, 08:46 PM
Oops, I meant the logos at Row 1, Col 2 and Row 3, Col 2 were the ones I liked. The logo at Row 2, Col 2 isn't bad either. I would maybe darken the spear-tip in the logo at Row 3, Col 2 a shade or two.

It would be interesting to see that logo with the spear-tip in gold. I'm not sure if it would look good or not, but I'd be interested in seeing it.

Nice try with the more complex modern hunting arrow. It needs a little work with the tip being more pronounced and maybe having a short base. As it stands now, it looks a lot like the space shuttle or the top of a Saturn V rocket. I'm not sure how well this spear-tip would appear as embroidery - the solid tradition spear-tip would probably be more pronounced.

Thanks for the gold spear-tip change - it looks nice, as do the others in this set.

I want to give others a chance, but these are definitely being considered as contenders.

About the only thing I would change with this current set is to somehow change the spear-tip just slightly at the base and/or along the outer edges so it would not look like a Christmas tree to some folks.

jtolbert
12-11-2006, 06:32 PM
Thanks for the attempts at defining the modern spear-tip better. Although I know what it is, everyone else thought it was a spaceship or swept-back jet fighter. I can't say I care much for the spear-tips (but I still like the basic logo design). :)

jtolbert
12-11-2006, 06:49 PM
Wow! Some design .....

This is one design that most people will either love or hate, but I'm sure they would remember it!!

I really like the neat-looking font, and the underscore for "FIRST IN" and little carets over the "I"s are a nice touch.

The spear-tip is pretty pronounced and easy to distinguish - very wicked looking indeed. The size might be a little over-the-top, depending on how people view it.

The star at the top is nice - I need to think about the red color (I know blue would not work cause it conflicts with the spear-tip, but gold or a silver metallic might be OK).

Overall, I nice design option that captures one's attention! :)

The creativity in designs so far have been very good, and I look forward to seeing a few more designs before settling on a prize winner. Because I did not want to discourage random creativity, I purposely did not convey my own design ideas prior at the outset:

My own original thoughts on a logo envisions some kind of pointed-tip spear either underscoring the corporate name or maybe even going through the name from left to right in some fashion. I also had some concept of a technology-look to the design.

Although, these conceptual ideas are probably not as good as the logo designs presented so far, I feel that I should at least put them out at this time in case they might generate some additional creativity beyond the current train of thought in the current designs in the thread.

I also wanted to provide a few links to some competitor logos that may be of interest (athough I think some of the designs presented her so far already exceed most of them):

Thanks for the presentation .... this is a nice traditional looking logo design. It's neat, has an interesting symbol, and the colors are good. With respect to the symbol, I see that the red represents the pointed end of a spear, but I'm not sure about the blue semi-circles. Overall, a good design, but it may be a bit to simple to provide lasting memory or be easily recognized. I would not say "no" to it yet -- but maybe I need to give it some time to see how it "wears" to see if I like it more in a few days. :)

Not bad .... I'd probably take the lead-in prior to the "F" off, add "SOLUTIONS" in a smaller font underneath and maybe consider thickening the "FIRST" up a bit. Thanks for taking a "stab" at it!! :D

Got it ... I'm trying to adjust to the leaning text thing. Maybe it's just that I'm not a leaning text person when it comes to corporate logos (just like I hate plain vanilla white block names for logos, such as General Dynamics logo, ugh!) :P

jtolbert
12-12-2006, 03:00 PM
Definitely different ... the arrow through the text (or maybe between "FIRST IN" and "SOLUTIONS" is a decent concept. This one I can't say I care for much, primarily because I think it would appear to be unreadable for some folks.

I will be checking for posts tonite, but then I will be on travel Wed-Sun with only limited access to check/reply to posts. If I can reply immediately, I will. If not, then it might be later in the week or on Monday.

For everyone who has submitted presentations so far, I have been totally impressed with the creativity and professionalism. There are certainly some designs that are very cool and meet the requirements.

For everyone thinking about submitting a design or have yet to present, please do, as I am keeping an open mind.

Right now, I am thinking that I will settle on a final designer to work with before Christmas and try to wrap this effort up in a few days after. :)

A nice slick-looking design concept. I like the fonts and the sizing differential between "FIRST IN" and "SOLUTIONS". The colors are good, and the arrow shape is good. The one thing about the arrow shape is that it looks very similar to the shape and colors that Delta Airlines (http://www.delta.com/home/index.jsp) uses in their logo. And although we would not be in the same market space, I'd prefer that the logo be unique.

Overall, the design has merit and looks very nice and clean.

Leclerk

Thank you for your feedback. Actually, besides spear-tip, this mark has several associations attached. Starting from left side, blue area and negative space around it represents soldier aiming, seen through spy-eye/binoculars/hmm...sniper? White area in the middle of the mark represents paper/data swoosh coming from far distance right in your face, while red number 1 is coming from the right side speaking: First In! :)

Interesting ..... I kind of like the concept for the symbol with the idea of a sharp spear-tip like object inside of another object. However, I'm not a strong fan of round cricles - there are too many out there. The 3D attempt for the spear-tip is nice. As for the font, it is OK. I would probably reduce the size of the "SOLUTIONS" piece. I give this one some thought ....

jtolbert
12-21-2006, 07:48 PM
Of all your previous ideas presented, this one is probably the best on eup to this point. Clean, neat, simple. Although I love the text and font, the symbol is too simple - it lacks a striking impression, IMO.

jtolbert
12-21-2006, 08:02 PM
This concept is a good one ... I like the integration of the star with a spear-tip. I might be a big too big though, and I would change the star color to blue/gray/silver/gold, and maybe try to add some lines/shade to the spear part to give it a 3-D look. Seeing the symbol to the side would be interesting as a variation.

jtolbert
12-21-2006, 08:04 PM
I like this one better .... same comments regarding the star color and the lines/shades for the blus part. Good text and font.

jtolbert

There something that I still like about your initial design concept with the stars, but I think the logos in freetime #15 and freetime #18 are slightly more appealing. This logo is OK, but I don't care for the arrow covering over the "IN". I guess what I'm saying is that I think the corporate name should be clearly readable, clean, neat, very professional-looking.

jtolbert
12-21-2006, 08:32 PM
This one is good in that it addresses the 3-D look with the different shades that I mentioned regarding the previous iterations of this design concept. Change the star color though ... and we'd be going in the right direction! :)

FOR EVERYONE - I cannot go with a primary star being a red star in the final logo for some obvious reasons - in the US, our stars are white on the flag, or silver/gold in the military. A red star with the blue looks a lot like the former USSR or North Korea - no offense, but that would not be very appearing to our clients!!

jtolbert
12-21-2006, 08:42 PM
Interesting abstract using the flag .... however, it is too overbearing from a patriotic perspective. I don't think using the US flag in our logo is good to work .... using the colors is OK, but not the flag. ;)

One suggestion, since I notice that you like doing the abstract type logos a lot, is maybe some kind of technical/data design symbol and some clean variant of the corporate name that still conveys everything. I am not set on red, white, and blue, but I would not care much for colors that are way off target. :)

jtolbert
12-21-2006, 08:56 PM
Hmmm .... nice change. Like the 3-D effect. I need to give this one some thought though - the symbol is interesting, but it may not capture the essence of the corporation. If the symbol bright blue, it might look like a drop of water (culligan man) .... :)

Cool color change (especially after looking at such much red, white, and blue). This design is definitely one to consider. It would be interesting to see if you could make the symbol a bit more 3-D looking, either via a shadow or some darker sides. :)

jtolbert
12-22-2006, 08:12 PM
I'm still trying to decide whether your design looks better with the symbol above the name or to the left (or maybe the right). Both look pretty good, and I love text, proportions, etc.

I'm not sure how much of a different it would make with embroidery, business cards, letterhead, etc. Any thoughts on this?

jtolbert
12-22-2006, 08:25 PM
An interesting variation - one thought is that the circle should be the same color al the way around - maybe blue. Another thought is that circle could represent a sniper's night scope with a thin black crosshair within the circle (maybe). Overl, an interesting variation ... :)

Interesting design - a nice way combine the word "IN" with a symbol. I like the added touch on the arrow tip. Good job!

The big question though is whether this logo is better than some of the other very nice design concepts in repesenting the company. It isn't a bad design, but I think it might not be what I'm looking for. I will think about a bit more though.

I really like the design concepts you presented in Logoholik #67 and #63; however, there are some changes that are I'd like to see in to see how they would look:

- the more 3-D looking the better these designs seem to look
- the star needs to be silver (same color as the word "SOLUTIONS") or gold
- making the arrow and star smaller, then inserting inside the circle as in #63 is intriguing

Thanks in advance!! :)

I had a question about your design concept, and I figured that as a branding consultant you would probably know. I like the designs presented in #44 and #46, but I am concerned about how well the symbol will reproduce on various items, including embroider, as well as how much additional cost might be expected due to the complexity.

Any insight into how well your design concept would work in reality and cost would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance .... :)

Thanks for the revisions - these look great! I particularly like the outline of the spear-tip in #105. I'm leaning more towards the versions without the circle, but I want to run it past a few folks to get their feedback. Thanks, again!! :)

After numerous fantastic designs submitted by some very good designers, it is time to settle on one designer to work with to get to completion on this project. The creativity and professionalism of every designer was phenomenal - I was quite impressed with several of the designs and the ability of the designers to tweak them as feedback was provided.

After a lot of careful consideration and feedback from various friends and colleagues regarding some cool design concepts, I've decided to settle on Logoholik as the designer I want to complete the project with. Congrats, Logoholik!

Thanks to everyone for their thoughtful ideas, creativity, and support!! :)

Logoholik,

I've pretty much settled on some form of the design concepts you provided in the last four revision sets as the basis for our corporate logo. There are still some changes that need to be made though:

For simplicity, I have decided to stay away from the circle (it does not appear to add value).
I like the outline of the spear-tip in Logoholik #105 - it should stay.
I'd like to see slightly more whitespace between the "FIRST" and "IN".
I am debating whether the logo would look better with the symbol above the name or to the left (tradition would probably place it on the left, but I like the way it looks on the top, as long as it doesn't take away from the name itself).
I am also debating whether the "FIRST" should be red with a blus "IN" - my initial thought is NO, but I'd like to see how it looks.
If the spear-tip is left on the top, I wonder if it is still too big. Maybe a slightly reduced version would look better.
One thought I had was whether the star should be solid silver, versus dual shaded. I'd like to see how it looks.
I have some concern over cost with the use of five colors - is there any way the number of colors could be reduced without loss of meaning/clarity? If not, I prefer to keep it as is.

There may be some other thoughts, but this is it for now. :)

I will likely not reply to any new changes until later in the weekend as I am having minor outpatient surgey in the AM. :(

Ok, larger space between first and in, smaller mark on top. From top to bottom: cmyk version for any full color offset print/screen/web, 5 color pantone version for silk printing, four color version for embroidery and b/w for fax.

Bojan,

I like the blue "FIRST" better. The spacing between "FIRST" and "IN" is good, and I like the smaller symbol - the proportioning is good. Thanks for the 4-color version idea for embroidery, etc. I think that will work.

One question I have is whether the "N" in the word "IN" is a bit wider than it should be??? It appears to be a little wide.

About the only thing I cannot decide on is whether the symbol should be to the left or on top of the name. Both appear to look very nice - maybe I've stared at them too long! :D

:) i guess that is for sure :) At least regarding your concern about letter N. Nope, it is not larger (it is lay outed from same font size). As for the mark positioning - in fact you don't have to make a decision there - it is a common thing to have a primary and a secondary logo (see for egsample: http://www.usd.edu/urelations/brandbook/USDSMGraphicsStandards2005.pdf page 4 and 5)

Bojan,

Thanks for the quick reply! Given that the "N" is consistent with the font and it's OK to have a primary and secondary logo, I think we're pretty much done - go ahead and email me the files at "jtolbert@myexcel.com" for both primary and secondary logos (everything I will need for print, screens, web, embroidery, etc). Do you think I would need a reverse image (white on black)? If so, please add that as well to the files.

Thank you so much for your help, creativity, and professionalism!! It was great working with you and Design Outpost on this project.

A website is going to be my next project .... :)

Cheers and have a Happy New Year,
JT
