(Admin code added by Palmer - 8705990)

I have a need for a new Logo. The logo will be for a Guatemalan community/portal site. The site will likely go live this coming Wednesday night in limited functionality, so if possible I'd like to declare a winner by then, but if I don't get enough entries or like anything, then I'll make it a full 2 week contest with the deadline being Sept 6th.

Here's what I need. Since the site will be targeting people of Guatemalan descent or those interested in traveling to Guatemala then the Logo MUST have at least the blue used for the flag. If you do a Google Image Search (http://images.google.com/) and type in Guatemala Flag, you should get plenty of examples. One thing is that you'll get many different shades of blue. I believe the right color is 37B6F0 (33CCFF for web safe).

The text should say either MyGuatemala.com or Guatemaltecos.com. The logo will be used for both sites, which point to the same site, but they will eventually be a english and spanish version respectively. You only need to create one, and I'll change the text to create the other once I receive the original. But you can do both if you'd like.

The logo MUST contain one (or more if it's not too cluttered, but I think one would suffice) of the following in any creative way in the logo.

A Guatemalan Pyramid (do a search for Tikal on Googles Image Search)
The Quetzal bird (the one on the official flag)
The Guatemalan flag
A Guatemalan style hand-carved mask (a more Warrior, or Animal looking mask - You can do a Google Search for Guatemala(n) Mask)
Somehow portray a typical Guatemalan village as part of the logo
Or if your familiar with Guatemala culture, anything else that would help symbolize Guatemala as part of the logo.

To be honest, I think a Guatemalan Pyramid will be the easiest to design and will probably look the best, but feel free to prove me wrong.

The only mandatory color is the shade of blue used by the flag - please compliment by using other colors at your own discretion.

The logo will also be used on t-shirts. I definetely don't want this to look clip-artish, but I'm sure you guys already know this. Feel free to ask any other questions.

Thanks,
John

Yes! This is my kind of logo! :)

I majored in Spanish and studied a lot of hispanic cultures in college - so this will be fun :)

Expect an entry from me later today!

The first here uses a traditional textile pattern in traditional colors--I believe the turquoise color is the color you were referring to. The second contains the image of the bird, stylized as well as another traditional pattern.

What do you think?

Hi John,

Here's a more technical design for the site logo.

You say that you will reguire the logo for T-shirts? The length of the name may become problematic as it doesn't 'fit' very well, especially if it is to be a breast logo...maybe the text on the back and the pyramid as the breast logo?...

I could work on something to incorporate a stylized version for a breast logo if you like?

Anyway, here it is....http://www.jms101.btinternet.co.uk/full_sets/gold/circular_bold_std/thumbsup.gif

Thanks for the entries so far. Here are my thoughts.

JulieT - These logo's do really make me think about traditional Guatemalan clothes and textile, which is nice, but I think I'm looking for a more modern look with elements of traditional Guatemala or something symbolic. It would be really hard to integrate these logo's and the colors with the actual site. Plus, the bird should really stay the colors of the Quetzal which is red, green and hints of white. The Quetzal also has a very long tail which distinguishes it from other birds in the region, because when it flies it almost appears to be a serpent in the sky.

Sparkie - Your first entry appears to show a Parakeet and not a Quetzal. As I mentioned above, this bird is almost synonymous with Guatemala itself (I mean a Guatemalan dollar is called a "Quetzal"). It's imperative that the bird be the exact colors and resemble the likeness of the Quetzal. I'm also not feeling the font on the first one. The second logo, is nice - but seeing it as an outsider, I might be confused as to what I'm reading. The glyph almost looks like an "O" with an accent mark on top of it. I'm also not really fond of this font either. I like your third one best from your entries. Can you possibly make the "My" a tad bit darker. Also, since the logo is primarily going to be sitting on the top, left corner of the site, I'd like to reduce the vertical size of it. Perhaps, putting the pyramid to the left would work better? Also, I'm not sure if it's just me (I'm not an artist), but the perspective of the pyramid seems slightly off, almost like the bottom of it is too rounded. Can anybody else comment on this? Does it look right to you? Am I just crazy? Otherwise, I do like this effort - anyway, can you spruce it up anymore, make it more creative or distinct?

Eagle - This is very nice. I like the abstract depiction of the pyramid alot. The font also works for me. Can you try the following for me. Make the background white and perhaps make the font the color of the background instead.

We're definitly on the road to something here. Also, if you are going to add the Quetzal as part of the logo, please visit these pages first. First example (http://www.mayanmajix.com/quetzal.html) - http://www.deliberate.com/aztec/mybird.html
Thanks

Oh yeah... One more thing. About the design fitting the t-shirt. I guess I should've mentioned that the logo will go on the back of the shirt across the shoulder blades so most of the designs should fit just fine. The front of the shirts will have something that I'm currently having an artist working on as we speak. But thanks for mentioning it, and offering an alternative! :)

Thanks for staying on this and making the revisions Eagle. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time integrating it into the current site layout and color scheme. The font just doesn't quite fit with the rest of the site. I'll include a screen shot here so that maybe it'll help with direction. I was playing with you logo a bit, but I just can't get it to where I like it. Any other ideas? Anybody? B.T.W the color of the pyramid in the picture is actually another one of the often used colors on the site, unfortuntely it escaped this screen capture. It's #B1B18C

Hi John,

I based the above sizes/layout on the webby you had running the other night (day?...) If you want to go firm on the colours you already have, I will work on something suitable...

Could you confirm the hex value of those border colours please... (colours? Ok, I'm British!http://www.jms101.btinternet.co.uk/full_sets/gold/circular_bold_std/laugh3.gif )

Cheers! http://www.jms101.btinternet.co.uk/full_sets/gold/circular_bold_std/thumbsup.gif

Thanks Eagle. Actually only the splash page is currently online. Please disregard this page as it's only a splash page. When I started this contest, I didn't have a color scheme yet, so I was actually going to create one based on the logo. However, since none of the colors on the logos so far (I know it's only been a couple of days) have caught my attention and as I was working on the sites layout I decided on the following scheme.

Blues
#4766A6
#7690C3

Yellows
#B1B18C
#EEEEE3

Other accents should be fine too. Thanks

Heheh, sorry...it's just in my nature to do my research!!! http://www.jms101.btinternet.co.uk/full_sets/gold/circular_bold_std/scholar.gif

I take it that you're happy with the overall layout of the logo and text there...if so, I'll work on a version along those lines...

I'm not completely set on the overall layout of the logo. My main concern is that the logo fit in with the rest of the header in terms of size, font, colors etc... Right now, it's still not quite there yet. The objective is to get a logo that fits with the overall layout and color scheme of the site. If it'll help, here is the .PSD file (although I think you mentioned you have corel, so not sure if this helps) for the header.

http://www.guatemaltecos.com/header_file.psd. As soon as I get something that to me fits perfectly with the rest of the sites layout, colors and theme, I'll end the contest (which I hope will be soon).

Thanks

Well....http://www.jms101.btinternet.co.uk/full_sets/gold/circular_bold_std/idea.gif

Had a little play around with the banner again; I think the problems you were having were just to do with proportion and spacing that's all:

I prefer the striking yellow used here...

Nice Idea Taldo, but that's more of an egyption pyramid then a Tikal pyramid.

Well I was a little disappointed that I didn't get enough entries on this contest for this rush job I had, but nonetheless, I'm happy with the work Eagle did. Thanks for sticking in there with me! Not bad - a 4 day contest :o

I'd like to declare Eagle the winner of this contests. Congrats! You can send me the originals (I'm going to need something I can open in either photoshop or illustrator, and that has layers because I may still do a little manipulation on the file.) to John[AT]CubistGroup.com

Not a big rush, I'm using the .jpg in your attachment in the meantime on the live site www.MyGuatemala.com (http://www.MyGuatemala.com) . I've chosen the 1st design from your last post. Of course as long as you send me a layered version I can always modify it if needed. Thanks
John
