Hello all D.O. designers!
Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Billet Tough Engineering
(If anyone needs an explanation of "billet" please let me know)
What type of product or service do you offer?
Aftermarket parts/accessories for Harley-Davidsons, custom choppers and any V-twin motorcycle. Most important is the fact that the products we manufacture are CNC (computer numerical controlled) machined from SOLID BILLET (i.e. not cast or stamped)
The materials are aircraft grade aluminum and high grade stainless steel.
How long have you been in business?
2 years
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
Establish brand identity and recognition within the biker lifestyle/community, and to encourage brand loyalty from the buyer, such that if someone sees our logo in a catalog next to a product, even if it is for a new part/product, they will hopefully recognize/remember the name and logo, or at least the logo.
A good example of this is “Joker Machine”
http://www.jokermachine.com/
What are your long-term goals?
To grow the company, through unique and innovative product designs, marketed via motorcycle accessory catalogs, t-shirts & custom motorcycle/chopper trade shows
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
Feb. 12th.
Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience.
It’s a wide range – the biker community as become very diverse.
Not your typical stereotyped ‘greasy biker’.
Who? Doctors, lawyers, professionals, women, middle class, yumpy’s, posers, blue collar, green retiree’s, anyone with plenty of disposable income.
But mainly readers/buyers that source from aftermarket accessory catalogs, such as J&P Cycles http://www.jpcycles.com/
And custom chopper builder websites and catalogs that distribute OPP’s (other peoples parts/products)
Who would you like to add to your audience?
The greasy biker! <g>
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
Needs punch, presence and authority.
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
Looking for creative input here.
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
Nothing specific, BUT-
I think we need some kind of “mascot” – we tried a concept of a Viking, as seen here in my armchair graphic designer hack:
http://www.billettough.com/
But are totally open to ideas, hence why were posting this job on D.O.!
Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
Stable, professional, cutting edge, strength.
What is your tagline or slogan?
“Industrial Hardware for Your…[several target markets]
.American V-Twin (Harley Davidson, Indian, Victory)
.Imported V-Twin (Yamaha Star, Honda Aero AKA “Metric Cruisers”)
.Custom choppers
.Café racers (Buell)
.etc.
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
Our parts and accessories are solid-tough, proudly designed, engineered and manufactured in the USA.
Where will your new logo be used?
Several areas;
We would like to be able to include the main logo either engraved, etched or stamped into products sizable enough to allow it. So the logo should be able to reproduce cleanly into simple engraver type lines – again, see a Joker machine product with logo: http://www.jokermachine.com/itemstreet2004.asp?ItemID=20&CategoryID=6&Placeholder=0
Keep in mind, we are NOT wanting to copy nor emulate Joker, just used for proper conveyance of ideas.
Others uses will be website, printed materials, business cards and possibly trade show banners/signage.
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
Joker Machine http://www.jokermachine.com/ – very identifiable (in the biker community)
Accutronix http://www.accutronix.com/ – not very creative.
Arlen Ness http://www.arlenness.com/ - ok logo, clean, to the point, not indicative of their leading edge design bikes and designs.
Tejas Thump Cycles http://www.tejasthumpcycles.com/Parts/LeversGripsctrls/handle_bar_grips_levers.htm
Ehhh, they could do much better.
List competitive URLs if possible
see above.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
Unique designs, more of an “industrial” look and feel to our products, a departure from the much overused chrome, skulls and flames.
Check these sites for examples of industrial “flavored” v-twin motorcycles:
http://www.exilecycles.com/index.php?section=1
http://bestbike.motardblog.com/24/
Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company: “Industrial Hardware for your V-Twin Motorcycle”
Note: I am not sure if the Feb. 12 deadline is reasonable - I can extend the time if needed...

Sure, no problem - I understand people have other projects etc. -- I just thought I saw other projects posted with replies and initial logo concepts posted the same day.
I was just nervous that I spec'd something that was scaring designers away.

Great! I'm glad to see some have thrown your hat into the ring! :D
I would like to clarify a couple of itmes;
The 'mascot' does not have to be a viking. Not to say that a viking won't work but if you have any other concepts (even abstract) I am willing to look.
Also, the logo itself does not have to be black and white, and does not have to be 'engravable ready' it should be easliy "convertable" from the full color logo to a line rendition of some sort. (Example: Djaka V2)
But off to a great start!

Re: version 1
Senter; great start - but I am not too hip on the round body of the logo. I am thinking more blocky. (square, rectangular.)
The PMS 160 does not strike a fancy either.
I'd like to font selection to have more punch.
But I like the conceptual viking! (Reminds me of Paul Sr. on American Chopper!)

Wow! Looking good out of the starting gate!
Version 2 has a good feel.
Especially the overall square attribute.
I like to sword through 'Billet Tough'
Possibly try some other fonts, I would like to see more legibilty, and maybe something other than Old English flavor?
Maybe make 'Engineering' more Terminator 2'ish.
Colors are bold, definite punch.
Thanks...

Re: version 2. Not working for me. (but thanks for thinking outside the box!)
Maybe tinker with your original viking, and adding a sword (somewhere) and a more legible font. Keep in mind "industrial".
I think the words "Billet Tough Engineering" should be able to stand on their own without the mascot. (as well as with of course)
FWIW, the font I used was 'Magistral" so maybe try using something similar?

Re: V3.
Overall it has a nice feel about it - but...
Still having a problem with the sword and the text. (especially the red rectangle box between the sword and the text.
Also, what are the set of "wings" under the helmet visor? it is not clear to me if theat is a set of extra high moustaches or accent wings or...?
See if you can tweak the concept a bit?
Thanks...

Re V2.
Hey thanks! Nice design approach, this design concept could take an interesting angle.
For me, the 3 swoops or baldes are a little too right brained to be industrial. (Too "flouncy")
Perhaps try a more linear design, like a helix, or helical cut gear. Just a thought...

Fabian, thanks for your entry.
Nice concept, but I think we are steering away from tribal at this point.
Although I do like your use of negative space betwen the 2 'T's
I'd like to see some more concepts (from all designers) using a fighting viking, a sword, battle axe and/or battle shield along with "industrial" flavored fonts.
As well, the word 'Engineering' should be just as prominent as 'Billet Tough'
Here's a littile factoid that I just learned about the Viking; when a viking was in battle, his battle helmet did not have horns. The helmet with horns was only worn cermoniously or at special events.
Feel free to toss in other concepts with the fighting viking such as possibly lightning or whatever!

The deadline is fast approaching and unless we get a lot of work done this weekend I guess I will need to extend the deadline.
And please, anyone - feel free to pipe up and say if there is something that I am missing here -
Have I been insulting in my responses (I cetainly don't feel that way)
Have I not clarified the project?
Have I confused or stated contradictory concepts in any way?
Have I not offered enough prize money? (I can't compete with precisiondealer.com though!)
Am I asking anything unreasonable?
I do realize that designers are working on other logos here and elsewhere, and I certainly am not expecting preferential treatment and I believe I am being as patient as I can be....

Logoholik - when I first saw the design, I immediately though sword or hatchett blades (even though you say it's a 'mean bike') ;-)
But you may be on to something - take a look at the first 2 swords on this page: http://bjorn.foxtail.nu/fulaste7.htm
Possibly massage your design into a iconic of sorts, sword handle up ontop, and possibly with the blade plunging down through/behind the 'Billet Tough' portion. Not sure if it can be done, but it's a thought!
Also, can you fully justify "Engineering" to be the same width as 'Billet Tough'?
-Mike

02-11-2007, 09:21 PM
Titania, thank you, thank you, for your entry!
Creative indeed!
But to me, he looks like a Japanese warrior.
I like the concept, the hatchett, and the 3/4 view of the warrior.
Maybe make the face more prominent and proportiante to the arm size & remove the thing around the neck. And make the moustache more "nordic" :-)
Also perhaps lessen the overall width of the text. Nice design on the enclosure box around the text -- but maybe proportion the text, box and warrior fairly equal to one another.
(Billet Tough Engineering does not have to be in a single line)
Hope that all makes sense.

Whoops - sorry! I _thought_ I had commented on them but I didn't.
(You are not being pushy)
Anyways, nice clean designs, but not what we're looking for.
[And this part of the message to everyone working on this]
We're thinking of leaning back towards the mascot idea, getting a viking warrior to brand our products.
Upper torso or even just the head, face and helmet of a viking warrior, possibly in iconic fashion. Ans possibly with a sword and/or sheild thrown in - possibly even use a sheild as a background or framing for the whole logo.
A good example of the overall feeling of the warrior we'd like it to have is shown here on this clipart site:
http://digital-clipart.com/vikings_clipart_dc.htm
(More samples by downloading the .PDF catalog of Vikings located on that same page)
Thanks everyone for your patience, this is a big learning curve for us here.

Freetime; re: version 1.
Now we're getting somewhere!!
Overall concept is great for the head and helmet. Is it possible to change the look to more "Nordic" - the mustache looks fu-man-chu but need to be more Viking'ish (no curve, arcing stright down)
Same with the helmet horns, no swoop, just a arc/radius from the helmet straight up.
The text I think needs some tinkering. Can we get closer to my original font? (shown in an earlier post)
Also, can you design this within a frame/border of some sort? Possibly a sheild? i.e. armor, steel, rivets, RAH!
I'd like to see what variations you might be able to come up with from this initial concept.
Great start!!

Titania - thanks, nice mods. (And can I say this without offending anyone?) but we'd like the mascot less Pacific Rim/asian. More nordic if possible.

Freetime - in the mean time, RE: V4
Can you tinker with the text layout? (While we ponder the new group of designs)
Maybe stacking the text as to not make the overall aspect so wide?
A thought.. 'Billet' over the top, 'Tough' underneath, and 'Engineering' under that.
And bold up or make 'Engineering' more prominent.
Or any other ideas - go for it!
(And, I am almost liking the v 3.x series moustaches better - but feel free to toss about some more variations there too)

Ok, not sure where everybody went... I had asked for a few more revisions from most entries but habven't seen any more.
Let's recap/regroup.
Djaka, Djaka! Where are you? You started out with a bang and I like the direction you are going. I'd like to see a bit more tweaking.
Fabian, you are very creative. I'd love to see what else you can come up with.
Logoholik, great start! I liked your approach - let's see you punch up what you started - I know you have it in you:-)
BlueCherry; AWESOME! But as mentioned we don't do wheels/rims, and need to stay away from a particular product or service.
Knock me out with a new 'in-your-face' design. Yeehaw!
DraganB; you too were off to an *impressive* start, I'd like to see some more output.
Tini1; You still there? Any more designs coming from you?
Titania; thanks for the changes, but after another meeting, we decided this viking concept will not work. The box containing the text looks good, but would like to try another design with the viking - or if you have any other ideas.... let's see them.
C'MON PEOPLES! I extended the deadline as I know there is plenty of talent just waiting to come out on this logo :D
Any designers out there that hasn't joined in that wants to - it's still wide open, let's see what you've got!

Freetime;
Can you try these things?
1) The moustache - can you shape it such that it hangs straight down, similar to V1, but do not "S" curve it. Make it essentially like an upside down "U"
2) The viking - can you take v4.1 and make the viking a simple line drawing? (i.e. a path that a cutter/plotter would follow without having to do fills or cross-hatching)
3) The text - in v4.1 put "Billet" direclty over the top of the shield. (Maybe curving the 'Billet' text to fit/follow the top arc of the shield?
Then put "Tough" directly under the shield (no curve) and then "Engineering" under Tough. All in CAPS of course ;)
BTW, I like the 3d 'metallic' effect on the top logo of v4.1!!!
Thanks...

Maybe I should approach it this way:
A) To all artists who have submitted entries on this design project who have no intentions of submitting any further revisions or new concepts - LET ME KNOW.
As well, if you are busy chasing the precisiondealer.com contest and others, but DO intend to keep working on this project, let me know...
B) To any artists who is considereing joining - LET ME KNOW.
There is still time and I am open to further design submissions.
With this information, I can better/fairly work with the 2 artists that are actively submitting revisions and concepts.
I will not take it personal if those that I have not heard back from decide to drop out on this project - but it will be disapppointing as I see lots of talent!!! (That I was hoping to tap into with my logo project)
Thanks everyone for all work submitted to this point, it is appreciated

OK; I meant to ask this earlier (and you may have answered it already), but is "billet" the finish, the material, or something else? When I google "billet" a lot of chrome accessories, etc. come up.
In a nutshell it's process or method. Where a part or component is machined from a solid chunk of metal, such as a sculpter would chisel a statue starting from a solid block of marble (or rock, granite etc)
we use Computer Controlled machinery (called CNC) to machine peices/parts from a solid chunk of high grade (ala aircraft quality) aluminum or stainliess steel.
-as opposed to- casting a part, where you pour molten metal (usally a cheap zinc and lead based concoction called "pot metal) into a preformed mold, where when it solidifies, out pops a molded part. Whcih is what we DON'T do.
Hence forth, billet prodcuts are higher grade, stronger, more durable, "industrial" aerospace / aviation quality components (and yes, more expensive)
Here's a link to a picture of some parts machined from solid billet aluminum:
http://www.vacmotorsports.com/db/images/m20_rocker_arms.jpg
Hope that explains it, if not let me know.
(Google was no help to me either! Said something about where soldiers are assigned to sleep. huh?)

Deanna - thanks for your entry! Great start. That's one mean looking Viking! :D
Is it possible to do a front view of the Viking? And possibly put the Viking in the center (between) 'Billet' and 'Tough'?
Titania - Whooo! I like the very dynamic look of the Viking.
Can you possibly pump up the overal size of the Viking but yet leave the text are the same size? Annnnnd, how about trying a different color; the yellow/gold is not quite working. Can you work in some red somewhere too? (In the text part of 'Tough')
Thanks...

Here's an updated version. I changed the eyes and widened the mustache.

Wow! I was away for the weekend, and came back to some more great input! :D
Titania: Yes! Thanks for those revisions. Can you make a line drawing out of the B/W version? (V5) And be able to make it as large as the red version?
Senter V3: Nice concept, waiting to see full head design. V4; I'd like to see a larger version of the sword and shield if I could.(text is ok IMO)
Snickerdoodle: Thanks for those new views. Overall a nice look and feel, but can you rework the eyes possibly? Looks like he has black eyes. (although maybe appropriate for a viking warrior!)
Freetime: You read my mind!! Thanks for the revisions on the eyes...
Can I ask for this? I would like to see (if you have it) is the V5 design with the font that I used in my initial mock up, which is 'Magistral' (if you have it that is).
Also - if not a pain in the ... can you take the V5 design and use the round shield? (plus a line drawing version) We just want to see a comparison.

If I somehow overlooked a designer or forgot to comment on a particular deisgn or revision, please let me know!
Thanks everyone for your studious efforts :D

Titania - thanks for those versions! (v6)
Senter - great, and thanks for doing a line drawing version. (v6)
Snickerdoodle & Freetime, thanks for the latest updates.
We will be picking a winner in a day or so;
Last call for any last minute entries or if you have an ace up the sleeve... put it on the table!
Again, your hard work and creativity is appreciated.

Greetings, sorry for being MIA for a bit... (family medical emergency)
We were ready to pick a winner but I see a revision and a last minute entry.
Bluecherry: Thanks for the revisions. One more mod if I could ask - that font selection is not working. Can you use something _similar_ to my example? Just on version 4. That will make it easier to visualize. (I DO like the 'Engineering' font selection for sure)
V5, V6 - no need for any revisions.
Aaron: thanks for submitting a concept! :D
Overall a nice idea - but I would like to see that design with some "hardware" - a hatchet, mace or sword/swords.
Possibly in an 'X' pattern?
If you could add something quickly I'd like to put yours in the "consideration" group.
After that we'll be picking a winner asap.
Thanks...

We need to get rolling with this logo, so it's time to pick a winner.
This was a tough decision, like going to pick out a new puppy -how can you leave with just one?
I truly appreciate all the talent and participation, and again it was tough having to pick just one - but we had to
Freetime!
Version 5.
And 6.
Ah, great, now we can't even decide between those 2. Well, this will just have to be worked out in the revisions forum.
Anyways, thanks to all participating designers, it was fun.
