Hello, I am Dave and I am the owner/operator of Fert-tek a startup lawn fertilizatin contractor. I am looking for a double sided 5X7 postcard design. This postcard will be used for both direct mail and as a handout flyer advertilsing my services and directing the customer to visit Ferttek.com for further information. LOGO FILES attached for designers to use.

I am not sure if DO will ask me to complete a survey for company information so I will post as much as I could here from the logo contest.

What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Name of the business is Fert-tek and lawn and ornamental fertilization services. My tag line is... Make your neighbors green with envy. Dave Palmeri owner operator, Ferttek.com is the business website, ferttek@comcast.net is the e-mail address and my phone number as well. I am working on a list of services to list on the card, here is what I have so far; 5, 6 and 7 step fertilization packages available to keep your lawn looking its best, packages starting at________, weed, insect and fungus control, chemical edging, one time applications welcome, discounts available.

What type of product or service do you offer?
I want to communicate to the customer that this is a professional lawn and ornamental fertilization business like some of the big guys (True Green Chem Lawn or Scotts fertilization services.)

Services offered are obviously lawn and ornamental fertilization, weed, insect and fungus control, overseeding, and chemical edging.

How long have you been in business?
I have been in the lawn care industry for 20 plus years but want to grow and market the fertilization end of my business as its own entity.

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
I want to communicate to the customer that this is a professional fertilization business that will take care of all their fertilization needs

What are your long term goals?
Build my client base and service territory through direct mail and internet marketing as well as through word of mouth.

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer? Deadline is February 14th

Audience Profile: Residential and commercial properties, with middle and upper middle class consumers being my target. To start, I will focus mostly in the town I live in and then grow the business into territories of similar families and business

Please describe your existing audience, same as above, residential and commercial properties with middle and upper middle class being my target audience

Who would you like to add to your audience? Same as above again with the hope of word of mouth helping it along

Perception/Tone/Guidelines: Professional, reliable and trustworthy service with a personal one on one touch

What type of post card would you like? Professional / corporate, nothing cartoonish. Unfortunately I do not know much about this type of advertisement

Do you have any colors in mind? (if so, why?)
The colors should be eye catching but natural for the grow industry, earthtones and pastels flowers. They should also blend with my logo design.

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your design? My tag line, "make your neighbors green with envy", lush green grass, colorful landscaping, calm and serene view suggesting the customer should relax and enjoy his or her yard and leave the work to me. I dont know if I will like to see one view of the customer looking out of his front door at his property, coffee cup in hand. Dont want to spend a lot of time on this idea unless it catches my eye to start.

Communication Strategy: Personal, one on one type business, with professional, quality service for the consumer.

What attributes would you like this postcard to reflect about your business? Will want this logo to set myself apart from the competition who mostly made their advertisements on a copy machine etc. Professional, corporate, trustworthy, value

What is your tagline or slogan? Make your neighbors green with envy

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience? Professional service with value in mind. Trustworthy and reliable service with a personal touch.

Where will your postacard be used? As part of a direct mail campaign and also as a handout like a large business card.

Competitive Positioning: No disrespect, but my competition is mostly immigrant workers coming up from Mexico with poor or no communication skills who are transient, what I mean by that is a different person shows up each time service is performed. I want the customer to know that each time they need service they will have somone there who they can communicate with and trust.

Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos? Some are ok but most are terrible and homemade.

What sets you apart from your competitors?
I am the owner and operator, meaning I will be the one who does the work and takes the phone calls and service requests. Value through low overhead (business will be run out of my home), trust and reliability is important to me since I think the big companies are overcharging and providing poor service.

Targeted Message: Make a switch to Fert-tek and Make your neighbors green with envy
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:Professional service with value for the customer.

Hello Dave,

Could you please attach the color.eps file in the zip that I sent you, that will be better for the designers.

Medigraph, I am glad to see that you are going to be involved in this contest and sorry I didn't offer that file because it wasn't on the list of supported files, but I will give it a go.

Goodhaus, first thank you for getting involved in my project. I like it as it is although I may change some of the text. I have secured my domain name and now have an official e-mail address. You can change that to Dave@Ferttek.com. I will give you updates as they come in. Looks good so far.

Two changes for the back side of the card I just thought of.

1) I still haven't decided if the back of the card is going to be black and white or color so please consider this in your design. FYI, I am leaning toward color unless it is too costly.
2) I am unsure if people will recognize that my e-mail address is dave@ferttek.com because it is similar to my web address. Could you work the words e-mail into the text to suggest that?

Hope this helps, I plan on printing 4X6 postcards to start, but may go 5X7 when I can afford the extra postage. Can I request both size files as well as one all color and one with a black and white back?

This was copy and pasted from their help section

FILE FORMAT:
We accept the following file formats TIF, TIFF, JPG, EPS, PNG and PDF.

RESOLUTION:
All file formats must have a minimum of 350 dpi (dot per inch) resolution.
The images designed for the web done at a low screen resolution of 72 dpi. Print images need to be created at 350 dpi or there will be a substantial drop in the image quality.

COLOR MODE:
All color artwork and/or images must be provided in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) color mode.
All black & white artworks and/or images must be provided in grayscale color mode.
Heavy black ink might cause smearing.

BLEED:
Please build your press-ready digital files by adding 0 .1" dimension for business cards, postcards, rackcards, add 0.125" for all other products.

We require ALL files to be built to the full bleed dimension specified for each trim size.
We automatically trim 0.05" or 0.0625" off of each edge, which will result in the desired trim size
Simply add 0.1" or 0.125" to the overall dimension of your digital layout. Example: a 5" x 7" would have a bleed size of 5.1" x 7.1" and a 8.5"x11" flyer would have a bleed size of 8.625"x11.125". downloadable templates?

What's a bleed?
It is the portion of the card that will be trimmed off when cut to the final size.

Why bleed?
The purpose of a bleed is to continue a color, image or design to the edge of the card.

CROP MARKS:
Please build your press-ready digital files by adding crop marks.
Lines indicating where the paper should be cut to produce the correct size.

FONTS:
a. Fonts must be embedded in PDF files.
b. Fonts must be outlined or converted to paths or curves in EPS files.
c. Some fonts have copyright restrictions and will not embed in PDF Files.
d. Quark Express: Fonts and images must be included with all files submitted. (Mac only)

SAFE ZONE:
All critical elements (text, images, logos, etc.) must be kept at least 0.125" inside the edge. Anything left close to edge may be cut off during trimming.

BORDERS:
Please allow 1/16" cutting tolerance around your card. We recommend no borders due to shifting in the cutting process, borders may appear uneven.

DIMENSIONS:

Products Final Print Size - 350dpi Size with Bleed - 350dpi
Postcards Inch: 4"x6"
Pixels: 1400x2100 Inch: 4.1"x6.1"
Pixels:1435x2135

Postcards Inch: 5"x7"
Pixels:1750x2450 Inch: 5.1"x7.1"
Pixels:1785x2485
Postcards Inch: 5.5"x8.5"
Pixles:1925x2975 Inch: 5.6"x8.6"
Pixels:1960x3010

When preparing press-ready digital files, what size should I build my file to?
Please build your press-ready digital files to bleed size by adding 0 .1" dimension for any product that is printed on 14- point cardstock (for example: business cards and postcards) and 0.125" for all other products (for example: brochures and flyers).

What is the required bleed?
Our bleed is 0.1" or 0.125" added to each overall dimension. Files not built correctly may delay the order, or may add costs.

What if my cards don't bleed?
We require ALL files to be built to the full bleed dimension specified for each trim size. We automatically trim 0.1" or 0.125" off of each edge, which will result in the desired trim size.

How do I prepare files for trim?
Simply add 0.1" or 0.125" to each overall dimension of your digital layout. Example: a 5" x 7" would have a bleed size of 5.1" x 7.1".

Doug, revisions look good but please put Fert-tek back in the return address, that was a typo on my part. Also, I may have confused you with one of my posts. The front will be printed in color regardless of its size. I was requesting both files for the back side (color and a black and white). I also posted my personal information a couple posts ago oops!

Doug, can I also get those files in 4X6 and 5X7? If it is one or the other I will go with the 4X6 due to the postage needed for bulk mailing.

I have to feed my kids, I will get back to you in an hour or so if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks in advance for your hard work!

Great, then we'll get those revised files sent to you. The original layouts are 5x7 and will have to be reduced to 4x6. Shouldn't be a problem getting both finished up today. :)
