Hi Designers.
We are looking for a new design for our new site www.designz.com.au
Design by Designz develops databases depending on what the client needs to accomplish. We develop databases using MS Access, SQL or MY SQL.
However, our strengths lie in the above field, not graphic design.
We are receiving a lot of customer enquiries as to whether we can design or develop the front end website for them as well. So instead of passing the work on to other companies like we have been doing in the past, we would like to keep it in house so to speak, and get people like yourselves to do the initial graphics design work.
So what we are looking for is a website design template. The design that we would like has nothing to do with database design, SQL or MY SQL. That is totally separate to what we are trying to achieve here. This is purely an html ‘website design’ template.
We do not have a logo for you to look at so you will have to try accomplish this without one or maybe build one into the template.
Some pointers that we would like:
Definitely the WOW effect!!
HTML pages driven by CSS
Rollover Text Links with changing text colour and background. No rollover image menus. See site 1 below.
No horizontal scroll when views in 800x600 design, with 0 top and 0 left margin. This will have to be done in CSS, as validator doesnt accept 0 margins in the html code.
All text links on pages should be able to be viewed by a search engine You can test here if you dont have a links viwer http://www.delorie.com/web/lynxview.html. Basically it shouldnt be showing any inline errors.
Green and blue are our desired colours, but dont let that stop you from posting something different. Again see site one below for a general idea.
Some sites of interest:
1: http://www.cwc.co.nz/index.html
Great text changing roll overs at top right and down the left. Nice Java rollover image effect. We think that’s a great design. Great colours.
http://www.webs2specs.com/index.htm
Good CSS work. Different layout.
http://www.littlebluedesigngroup.com/index.html
Plain but effective.
Download zip file with the pages text we have thought of here --> http://www.designz.com.au/designz_files.zip
Can we make the deadline Wednesday 10th September 2004 as I am out of the country from the 11th for 10 days.
Any questions please ask as I will be checking forum daily.
Kind Regards
Darryl Remnant

Hi Brian,
Nice to meet you.
lol, don't take that literally. I don't mean the whole site has to be CSS controlled, I just didnt want a plain html page with sliced images. You can add so many more groovy effects with css.
CSS does give the designer or site owner the ability to change multiple pages within the website by changing one small line of code in the css file. Not only that, it leaves your html code much more friendly and the page loading is faster. Looks much more tidy... IMO.
Anyway, just do what you can mate. I am totally open to sugestions.... I'm sure you can dig out a beauty for us..
Hit me with it !!!! :woot:

Hi Ryan
Heck that was quick. Thanks for the first go at it....Someone has to don't they.
I do like your design, but its not quite what we are looking for. I feel its missing that WOW effect. It just doesnt jump out at you. We would like to see a design with a smaller header type banner or picture at the top. If viewing in 800x600 your sample header takes up half of the viewable area.
Its soooo hard to describe a design layout in an email, but I will give it my best shot.
The design we are looking for hopefully is bright, sort of high octane type. Various designed pics on it somewhere. Sort of bold and out there....but in a classy way.
Good usage of white background, but this is open to the design itself.
Sites to give you an idea.
http://www.zurvas.com.au (Love the colours)
http://www.cwc.co.nz (This site has great effects and is bright)
http://www.mediatwo.com.au (Like it because it has a different layout and style)
http://www.webs2specs.com/index.htm (This is different. Stands Out)
http://www.bambooretreat.com.au/retreat-background.htm (this one we like the graphics and pictures. Like the different look)
I hope this give you more to go on.

Hi Lang, Thanks for your entry.
Now we are cooking with gas. I like!!!!!
Good thinking about the login, forgot to mention that. I also like the dot before the menu names.
The faded background is great.
The blue swirls to the right look excellent. Very very nice Lang.
Comments:
Is it possible to have different fonts for the designz at top and bottom corners. They look a bit standard.
Can you drop the header text down just a tad, I think its a bit close to menu bar.
Can we place a picture in there somehow without upsetting things. There is a bit too much space there on the right of the text. I am trying to put my finger on it. There just appears to be something missing, but don't know what.
Other than that, its a groovy looking template.
I look forward to what you can pull out of your hat.
Regards
Darryl

Lol... it's always the fonts - everyone has their different tastes. :)
What sort of style font were you looking for? Perhaps that could help me narrow it down.

Hi Lang,
Soryy it took so long. Got visitors.
Pease download approx 9 fonts that may suit Here (http://www.designz.com.au/designz_fonts.zip)
I like the mouser and madison ave font the most. You will probably have a better judgement of what suits than I do, so have a play and give me your opinion. You may already have similar fonts to these. If you know of a better one, go for it.
Thanks

Is it possible to move they background image and pen image around so line up better. Maybe center the background image so it moves away from the pen. They look a bit cluttered.

Hi Darryl,
Greens and Blues and generally great colours to use for nature designs so when I saw you are from Shepparton I thought why not implement outback Australia into the design.
I have kept a clean and professional appearance. I hope you like the direction I have gone... :)

Hi Demex,
Thanks for your entry.
We are based in Shepparton, but most of our referrals come from Melbourne and Sydney. There isnt much call form database integration and website design here. We have nothing against Skippy, but would prefer a more suburban banner. Something along the lines of what you have in your portfolio:
http://www.designz.com.au/banner.gif
and maybe some images with groovey effects like this that match the page design
http://www.designz.com.au/pic1.gif and this http://www.designz.com.au/pic2.gif
I like the headers in your clients site http://www.designz.com.au/pic3.gif.
We think there is too much blue text in the page. Can we break that up a bit.
We love these sites:
CLICK (http://www.littlebluedesigngroup.com/) and CLICK (http://www.mediatwo.com.au/) because they are different. They have different coloured circles and shapes and nice images.
We sort of want to get away from the normal square box type website if we can. We would like something a bit different like the two sites above. Not to radical, but different.
I hope you can understand my double dutch here. I am really struggling to try and explain what we would like.
But I think a queensland lad like you can knock me off my seat!!!!.
Kind Regards
Darryl

Hi Coredesign and Demex
Thanks very much for your re-submitted designs.
Coredesign:
I like this a lot better. It’s still a bit too square looking. We are looking for more curves, colours (green blue). Some images would be good somewhere in there.
Its a bit too similar to what we design already: Our Site (http://www.designz.com.au)
Dont laugh, I know we are not the worlds best designers (thats why we are here)
Could you please change the banner picture to a more corporate or funky design. The scenery shot is not the sort of image we would like to portray.
Could you maybe get some images or something else in the body, as it looks a bit naked. Maybe change the layout around to suit some images.
Is it possible to change the colour of the boxes on the right to having a small green header at the top and inserting a gradient blue -> white fade going down to the bottom.
Demex:
That is heaps better. Well done. Could you please change a few things for me.
Can you please change the pastel blue colour. We would prefer the site in these colours:
<img src='http://www.designz.com.au/sample2.jpg[/img]
I would like to see the design based around those green and blue colours. Which way around I will leave to you.
Can the all the menu buttons be a solid fill of either blue or green. Rollover the opposite colour. i.e if the buttons are blue, green rollover, green button, blue rollover.
Can you change the bullets on the menu buttons, as they look a bit too much like love hearts.
Change you please change the image of the woman on the phone, as lots of websites have a woman on the
phone. I think it is now a wee bit over used. Plus, one of the sites we did for a client has the exact same picture of that woman. Have a looksee here (http://www.mobitech.com.au) Ironic Huh!!
Can you change the red text to match the new colours that I mentioned above.
Well that should do, I don’t want to keep you up all week.
Thank you both for you effort. I look forward to the 3rd round.
Regards
Darryl

Hi Peoples.
If there are any other designers that are going to enter, can you please hold up your design brush so I can get an indication???
I would love to see a few more designs.
If you are planning to submit something, can you have a look at the design Demex submitted. That is the type of design we are after. Something a little different, something funky with some groovy images and shapes. Green and Blue deign would be preferable ***See image I posted earlier***
Thanks in advance.

You leaving for LA will have no bearing on the contest. If I thought your design was the the best, you could be in China and I would still track you down....

Thank you all for taking the time and effort to enter
You sure are going to make this a hard decision in the end.
Comments:

Thank you for your entry. Maybe if you could add those changes I mentioned in my earlier post.

I just want to see a bit more going on in there. If not, I thank you for your time and effort.
Demex:
That looks great. Would it be possible to change to colours around? Can we have the main page colour as blue, with green buttons. Can you also change the font for designz at the top, to something like madison ave.ttf and change the colours to green design with a blue z.
Lang:
That’s a radical change from your last one. Good job mate.
I really like the design. I like the concept of what you have done, but I would like a different image if possible. Same concept, with the white line flowing from between the two smaller images. The one you have there reminds me of a magnified CPU heat-sink.
I am not sure what sort of image, see below for my ideas.
xteriormotive
That’s a really nice design. I love the layout and the subtle colours. A couple of changes. Can you remove the group of bubbles, then make the white oval in the top right corner smaller, and enlarge the font to fill it a bit more. There is a bit too much white there.
I would like to see a different picture at the top. The one you have is nice and clear, but I would like to see something that represented design.
xteriormotive and Lang:
I have racked my brain trying to figure out what sort of image would go well there. The things I have thought of are:
1. A wall with designer graffiti on it i.e with words like web design, graphic design sprayed on it, but in a designer type of way etc etc
2. A bright coloured coral reef type picture with designs and words embedded into the coral, where you can see the sea and coral
3. A plane in the sky writing web design, graphic design etc in different colours
Some ideas for you to go on.
I am very impressed with these deigns.
Remmy rubs his hands together in excitement waiting for the next round…..

Thanks for the revision. Just some minor adjustments. Sorry to keep doing this to you.
Could you remove the text style from the font and have it native.

Im not too sure on that shade of green I asked you to use. I think I put you crook there :(
Could you possibly change the all the green text to (#1EBC41) or R:30 G:188 B:65 or C:76% M:0% Y:100% K:0%.
Could you change the buttons back to blue, with the new colour green rollover.
Thanks Zoe,

Hey Darryl, since you're online I'll throw another question at you. Do you want a techy/computer type of picture for the main image, or would you rather go with something more abstract? I'd like to explore other possibilities beyond your suggestions if I may, so clarification would help. :)

Hi Darryl,
Made those small changes. please see updated post.
The green you asked me to use didn't look quite right with the blue so I chose a colour near that green that I thought worked a little better.
Due to time restraints - this will be my last modification until the comp ends. If you decide to choose my submission as the winner we can work on any colour alterations afterwards. :)

Hi Darryl,
I've been trying to search for a suitable coral reef picture the last few days but have found nothing interesting. I may just go ahead and try to find something different. Rest assured, I understand you want a picture that can somehow symbolize design. Hopefully, I can find something perfect. :)

hmm, is that how sharp the image is, or is that just to show me what you mean? As it looks a bit blury.
I think its a bit too bright Lang.
Here is something I threw together......
Removed images as no longer relevant
But it may be far easier to go with something subtle me thinks. I could have you here all year.
Man I am a picky aren't I..... Sorry to muck you around Lang. Last change I promise. Then I will decide what to do after the contest. Man I make you people work for your money dont I....
I was thinking something along the lines of this. This is from one of our clients website. Its at http://www.itrent.com.au if you wanted to look at what I mean.
Removed images as no longer relevant
And where it fades to white maybe leave that available for a logo.....
What do you think?

Actually, that's just a comp. I would purchase the high-res version if you liked it, and of course the color could be changed. Anyways, I'll see how I can incorporate your ideas into my designs so that they look seamless. Right now, they wouldn't compliment each other, so I'd either have to revise the template or play around with your ideas a bit. :)

Hi Ryan,
No, you just do want you think the design needs, not what I think it does.
As I said earlier, you probably have a better eye for that sort of thing than I do, and you have the design infront of you, so you would know what would and wouldn't work.
Forget my ideas, as I now realise they won't work with that design.
Please just do what you can.
The orange could hopefully be toned down just a tad :)
Regards
Darryl

Hi Brian,
Thanks very much for your design. I think it is great. It was well worth the wait!!
Just a couple of things, can you add copyright content, privacy policy and terms of use text links at the bottom.
Can you change the font in all the sub headings, including the Web and Graphic Design Australia, to something thats a little bit easier to read and a bit more formal. ie. Headache. If you dont have the font, download font here (http://www.designz.com.au/headache.zip)
Can you also remove the italic from the Web abd Graphic Design Australial, but leave the italic where it says "where fantasy becomes reality" in the top righthand corner.
Well done Brian... Thumbs Up from Remmy

Darryl

Hi Nat, :D
We are not overly concerned about the colours. We just happened to like the green blue colours.
We are very open to other colours and if you have something on your mind, you go for it.
We will give it the same respect as any other entry.

Darryl

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your dedication, but.................
I liked the text links at the top in the blue as you originally had them. White just seems to take away something.
Oh I just about forgot, there is no log in button...
Sorry mate.
Darryl.
P.S Only half the image loads, or was that on purpose.

Hey Brian,
Now that I can see the complete image, leave as is.
I like the changes including log in button and the extra blue circle on the left.
Seeing it all together, I would like to keep the white text.

Hello Peoples,
Well it has come to that time. We have decided to end the contest one day early, as we think it has run its course.
We have chosen the design from koolbrian. Well done Brian.
We realise this wasnt the easiest of contests to get ideas for, so we would like to take a moment to say a special thanks to Demex, Lang and coredesign for all their effort and hard work they put into their submissions. It was much appreciated.
Thanks also to xteriormotive for your submission. We wish you all better luck next time.
Brian, could you PM me when you get a chance, and we can finalise the details
Best wishes.
Darryl Remnant
Congratulations Brian!
Darryl - thank you for the opportunity to design a template for your site.
We hope to see you here again. :)
Great work, Brian! :)
And thanks Darryl for your outstanding participation during the length of the contest.
