View Full Version : T-shirt, merchandise design *Project Over*

This contest is for an image to be used on T-shirts and other merchandise. Here are the details: (Admin code added by Palmer - H7698738)

The image is for people that collect vintage (old) postcards. The image could say “I Collect Postcards”, “Vintage Postcard Collector”, “I Love Postcards” or something similar. The image should not say “Postcard Collector” by itself, as this is a trademarked name of a magazine.
The image will primarily be used on a white or light gray background.
The image should look good in different sizes (i.e., it should look equally as good on a mousepad as on a t-shirt).
One idea that we had is to have an image that looks like a vintage “large letter” postcard. These are the old postcards that say “Greetings from” in small letters and then have the state or city name in big letters below. For examples of what a large letter postcard looks like, go to: http://www.the2buds.com/postcard.htm and click on one of the states listed. The image at the top of each state page is a large letter postcard. The design does not have to be of this type; again, this is just one idea we had.
We must own all rights to the final winning design.
We would like the image in various formats, including the format the file was originally created in (.psd, .psp, etc.).
The contest will run for 7 days.

Thanks in advance! I am online often, so I will try and be prompt with feedback.

Here is an idea based on the vintage cards.

If you have high resolution pictures of vintage cards or other types of images you would like to use I can replace the image being used inside the font.

Thanks for entering! Nice image. I like the way the word "postcard" looks like the lettering on a large letter postcard. However, I think the image inside the letters should be changed. Is it possible to put a different image in each letter? In a large letter postcard, each letter would typically show a different building or scene in the town or state that the postcard is from. I'm not sure if that would make the design too "busy". I'm also wondering how the image would look with just a solid color inside the image. I could get you hi-res scans of old postcards, but I think most of them are still copyrighted.

I'm wondering since these guys are a little young, maybe they aren't aware what vintage postcards look like. I'll see if I can find a free font for them to use somewhere as well, the font in the link is not free

I am open to other ideas as well. The large letter postcard idea was an idea my partner and I had.

For those who do not know what a vintage large letter postcard looks like, here are links to a couple on our site:
Vintage Large Letter Florida postcard (http://www.the2buds.com/cat//FL_9999.jpg)
Vintage Large Letter Nevada postcard (http://www.the2buds.com/cat/NV_9999.jpg)

Thanks for your help!

Hi Terri,

I used one image this time simply to show that it can be done like the old postcards. I can add an image to each letter but i was not sure what type of images to use, hense the reason I asked if you had any you would be able to use.

I could have included buildings. landscapes and people but I wasn't sure if this was the direction you would want to go in. I thought that images of vintage postcards would be more appropriate. If you would like to look into the copyright info, maybe we will be able to work with a few postcard images?

I will also create the design with solid colour fill and post it later today.

Demex - I actually like the solid color fill image better; I wouldn't bother trying to put images in the letters. I think that would make the design too busy, and I feel the solid color will lend itself better to printing on merchandise. Could I see it in another color or two for comparison? I do like the image; thank you.

ubergerlgeek - looking forward to your design, too.

So, my ISP decided not to work this morning, which means (of course) I couldn't work. Had this page opened in my browser, so thought I'd put together something for you.

The aged/retro look can be a little hard to achieve in vector, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Hi Rabbitdog -

You did a great job achieving that retro look! My thought when I first saw the image was to just have the postcard image be the design. It would be bigger, and then it could say "I collect" instead of "greetings from", and then "postcards" instead of "ohio". The font you used for the "greetings from" is perfect. Then each letter of postcards could have an image in it, like you did for "ohio". Let me know what you think. Thanks for entering!

Terri, I plan on entering by the end of tomorrow, it has just been a full week for me, I have recieved contracts on 3 template designs, 1 full website and 3 logo designs that have to be completed by next Friday. I did plan time for Design Outpost contests this weekend though, so expect a design from me by Tomorrow Night.

Hi all,

Due to the lack of entries thus far, I am extending this contest through Monday. I'm hoping a little more time will help anyone wanting to enter. I also have some specific feedback:

Zoe (Demex) - Can you show me your design in at least one other color?

Liz (Rabbitdog) - I think the inside postcard design would look good by itself (if I just said "I Collect" and then "Postcards". I also like the design as you entered it, but I would want something more generic written in the postcard part (not a specific state). It has to have mass appeal. Any ideas? Let me know.

Ubergerlgeek - You mentioned you would be entering. I'm anxious to see your design if you have an idea!

Jon (Synax) - Thanks you for participating. I like it! I really like the way you used images inside the letters. Question: I know "postcards" is a long word, but is there any way to make the letters bigger (maybe taller or closer together) so that more of the image inside the letters can be seen? I would like the "postcards" word to take up more of the postcard if possible. Also, I'm not sure about the text "The Vintage Postcard Colector". Could that be removed without affecting the balance of the image?

Everyone - let me know if you need more information from me or if you have any questions.

Thanks for participating!

Terri, here are the changes you requested

Jon (Synax) -

Thanks for making the changes. I like the letters bigger; that way, I can see the nice images you chose for the letters better. For printability reasons, I would like to see the background as a solid color. Although I really like the background scene you selected, I'm afraid it wouldn't print very well on a t-shirt. Also, could you lower the "I love" just a little? Thanks for your work, and have a good Superbowl Sunday!

Background colors can be changed with ease.

Jon (synax) -

Thanks for your quick work! I do feel that the solid color background will work better for printing. I was thinking of the background color and the color of the "postcards" behind the main postcard image. I was wondering if reds, and blues might work instead of the brown and yellow tones, since the images seem to be of US places (that would give in a kind of patriotic look, which is popular right now). If you have time to give me an image using those colors, I'd appreciate it. Thank you!! I like the design and can envision it on a t-shirt, etc.

Jon (synax),

It looks great! If you have time, I would like to also see it with a light blue background on the postcard. If not, no problem, I know I've asked you for several changes already. Thank you again.

My concern about trying to put "postcards" in the postcard itself is the length of the word. It's not going to be able to fit into the card AND fill the space successfully (not to mention the potential guady factor of 10 different images, one for each letter). I'm a bit familiar with these old postcards (have a shoebox full of them packed up in a closet), but haven't looked at them lately, so I'm not sure of all the varieties - perhaps just a generic card? or one for a foreign localation rather than something that could be associated with a particular state.

I've been really busy lately, so I'm not sure if I'll get a chance to update my entry before you close the contest, but just thought I'd throw those ideas out there.

Hi Terri,

I am so sorry that I haven't replied since your last request. I have been flat out.

I have put together a few other colours so you can see some variations. The colours can be changed to your liking. If you decide to go with this image for your T-Shirt I will be happy to make alterations.

Hi everyone,

I'm happy to say that a winner has been selected for our contest!

Well, actually two winners. We decided to offer both a first place ($40) and a second place ($25) prize. We felt this was necessary, as there are two designs we can use in our business.

The design that we are awarding First Place to is the design that we feel will be the easiest to print on our t-shirts, mouse pads, etc. as is. While we really like the Second Place design as well, it may require a little more thought and work on our part to get it exactly the way we want it.

So.... without further delay... I'm pleased to announce the winners:

First Place ($40) - Zoe (Demex) for her "Vintage Postcard Collector" image.

Second Place ($25) - Jon (Synax) for his "I Collect Postcards" image.

Thank you again to everyone that participated. I want to especially thank Jon for all his efforts in making all those changes (he was quick!). I look forward to getting and using the images!

Yeah Zoe and Jon! :wee:

Thank you very much Terri for using us for your design work. I'm imagining going to the flea market this summer and seeing one of these designs on somebody's t-shirt :) I really appreciate your patience as well.

Best of luck with The2Buds.com :)

Thanks! I was not expecting to win this comp as I was quite impressed with some of the other entries.

The design is in Corel Draw. Find out from your printer if they have Corel Draw and what version. I will also save it in other formats but I am sure the printer will prefer the original file. : )

The2Buds

Jon - I would like your design in the following formats: Adobe Illustrator file, .gif, .jpg, and any other file format that you think we might need to get a good scaleable image.

Zoe - We haven't hired a printer yet, so please provide your image in Corel Draw, .gif, .jpg, and again, any other file format you recommend (it has to look good in different sizes). You guys are the experts; this is still pretty new to me.

Thanks again for all your hard work! Feel free to also contact me directly through my email.
