Company Details

1a) Name of Company:

JB Outman Distributing

1b)Company Tag Line or slogan:

not really

1c) Do you have a company logo?

Yes, we just refreshed it.

1d) Do you have a corporate visual identity (a customized (non stock) logo and color scheme carried out throughout your office, stationery, business cards, etc.)?

We just redesigned our logo.

1e) What is the nature of your business? Briefly describe your products or services:

Cutlery Distributors - B2B Wholesaler

1f) List the things that make your company/product unique.

We are a smaller company which gives us advantages in knowing customers better/more intimately. We help our customers grow their business, and are in business to work with customers for the long haul building relationships. Competitors have “order takers” not as many relationships there.

1g) Who is your target market? Who are you hoping to reach with your site?

B2B – Looking to reach wholesalers

Looking to reach out the SMB (small/medium business) – “mom and pop” shops

1h) What advantages do you expect this project to bring you?

We are looking for an update to the website look/feel to make things easier to navigate, shop, and overall have a better online shopping experience. We also need a new design to work with our updated logo.

Website Details

2a) Do you have an existing website? If so, what is the URL?

http://www.jboutman.com/

2b) IMPORTANT: Please list at least 3 URLs (web addresses) of high quality sites that you like the look of (these do not have to be sites who’s business is similar to yours. It aids us in determining what your design style is.) Please consider layout, colors, navigation, graphics, and typography.

Benchmade.com
Swissarmy.com
Moteng.com

2c) What colors or color schemes would you like?

We Like Blue. NOT Red, nothing too brown or black either. We want it to look complimentary to the new logo as well.

2d) List any color that must be used or must be avoided specific for this web site:

NOT RED

2e) List the Navigation links for your Site: Currently Left Nav – A-Z, Categories, Brands and top Nav:

Home, View Cart, Login, Account Info, Help, Contact, Sitemap.

These may change with an update/manipulation of data that is also planned for this project.

2f) What is the single most desired action for a visitor to take while at your website? (e.g. call a phone number, fill out a form, sign up for a mailing list, make a purchase, request a free report, choose your company over a competitor, etc.)

Current Wholesalers – make a purchase and choose JBD over competitors.

New Wholesalers – get good information about JBD, request an account, choose JBD over competitors

2g) Would you like Flash elements? What are the Flash elements (e.g.: intro, header/banner, menu etc.) that you want in your website? Please describe them.

We want the site to be non intimidating and simple to navigate since our focus is on customer service and building relationships.

2h) What type of look are you trying to achieve? (e.g. clean, high-tech, conservative, warm, neutral, gothic, spiritual, artsy, fun, flashy, etc.)

Clean, easy to navigate, informative site

2i) Please provide the addresses of competitors' sites, if possible:

Moteng.com
Valorcorp.com
Blueridgeknives.com

2j) Do you have any images for use in the design of your site? If not, do you have images, can you offer suggestions of what you type of imagery you feel would be most suitable for your website:

We don’t want the site to look too fussy. We don’t like the idea of textured background or too much color in the background. While we want some color, we know white space sells.

Deadlines and Deliverables

3a) What is required breakdown of the files you require our designers to supply you with on finalization of your project?

.psd files

3b) Are there any other comments/specific ideas we should keep in mind while designing your project?

I believe that a lot of websites try to catch the users eye with too much info at the welcome pages. Instead it does the opposite.

For example (http://www.swisspocketknivesonline.com/)

Trying to cram too much info into to small of an area.

Hello Blair,

If we were to incorporate something like these - Benchmade.com Swissarmy.com with the larger images ont the front - my first question is are they going to have the images to back it up?

Thanks

Zoe

Hi Zoe,

They do have a small and decent image gallery.

Perhaps you could incorporate some products and brand logos to begin with?

Thanks,
Blair

This looks like an interesting project, I'll be entering, but unfortunately I'm snowed under until a bit nearer the deadline.

Hi Blair,

Looks like I am the lucky first to jump in. :)

I tried to stay clear of the typical ecommerce layout, just to make it stand out from the rest. :)

I look forward to your feedback.

Hi Zoe,

I really like what you've done here but can you please tweak just a couple of small details.

1. The Featured Categories font and layout looks a lot like Google Adwords so can we change that so it is a bit different.

2. The pale aqua color you've used for the header distinction around Categories, Brands etc. is really pretty but could you find a color that is a little deeper? It feels super feminine to me right now and we need something a little more... not feminine. :-)

3. Can we incorporate some product names with the featured item graphics?

I think that's all for now....

Thanks!
Blair

Clink and Will - I look forward to seeing your entries!

Gypsimind - I really like the nav, large image and the additional images to the right of the page. I do feel though like the left nav is disappearing. Can you darken the font or come up with some other way of bringing that out a bit more?

Thanks!
Blair

Zoe,

Can we add fake content below the featured products with a "Learn More" button or text link and an "Add to Cart" button?

Can you change up the Featured Categories look - it reminds me of Text advertisements for some reason right now.

Also, can you add brand logos in a row above the footer?

Thanks!
Blair

Hi, here is another concept derived from my previous idea. This one is more structured and has the products smaller, more shadows and balance between the elements :D

Hi Zoe,

You are our leading contender right now. A couple of additional changes and I think we'll be there.

First, let's change Featured Items to Featured Brands. We can still have an "item" image but "Product Name" will become the Brand Name. If you can find a way to incorporate the brand logo as well, that would be cool.

Featured Categories is fine - but we will be building out actual categories - so there won't be brand names as categories. Could you make and example for Knives, Lighters and Flashlights instead of Zippo, Gerber and Columbia?

Let's keep the tagline to: “Building Relationships That Last”

Can we remove the following brand logos: Tac Force, Mercworx, Mountain house & Tomahawk

and add the following logos:
Mission knives, Maglite, Al Mar, & Fisher Space pens

We'd also like to move Shop By Brand above Shop by Category in the left navigation and move Brands A-Z above Categories A-Z

Thank you!!!
Blair

Hi Zoe,

This looks great. I'll get it to the client today and make sure he doesn't have any additional changes.

In the meantime could you just give me one product view page and I think we're almost all set.

Thank you,
Blair

Hello Blair,

Here is an idea for the inside page. I have tried to keep it clean and expandable depending on the info provied by the client. Also I noticed on their site that you don't get any info, so I am assuming you have to be logged in to be able to order etc... So.. I made them "blocks" so you can simply remove that info if not needed.

I am sorry for the delay - I will be away this weekend for a big tradeshow with work and have been preparing for it. I will not be able to do anything more unfortunately until I get back from the tradeshow.

Is there any way you can get the psd files of the homepage to us so we can get started with the integration?
