Hi Designers!
I've spent a few days looking at the great designs here on DesignOutpost. I really like the quality of work that comes from a group of such talented designers. Great work to you all!
Here's my contest:
This contest is for a logo design.
UPDATED (September 9): The business card layout and letterhead layout are no longer part of this contest. This contest is for the LOGO ONLY!
I'm starting up a new Internet Services company called "SitePop." The URL is sitepop.com. This company will primarily start with web hosting services but will expand to other web and Internet services in the future.
SitePop's primary goal is to get websites up and available on the web and help "popularize" them through different marketing strategies. The idea behind the name has to do with things like "Site Popularity," "Site Popping-up" and/or "Site Population." (Cheesy, I know, but it's just to give you an idea of what the intentions are for the name).
DESIGN GUIDELINES
The website for sitepop.com may look similar to the following**:
<img src='http://www.covert.ca/sitepop/2984-b.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
more website images can be seen here (http://www.covert.ca/sitepop/).
**Note: This website layout is a suggestion only! Please don't be confined to basing the logo on this website layout. I would much rather change the website to suit the logo than cater the logo to suit the website. If you have an idea for the sitepop logo that doesn't necessarily suit this website layout, please still submit it for consideration. ;)
The logo will likely go somewhere in the area where it says "COMPANYLOGOTYPE," but I would like it so that it can be modified to go on a white/light background. For example, I may choose to put the logo where it says "www.companyname.com" (light grey background) instead.
I'm looking for a clean and professional (not too busy) looking logo that is anywhere from 2-4 colors.
I would preferably like the font to be sans-serif, like Tahoma or Univers, but I'm open to any type of font if it fits. I'm not sure if I'm going to go with "SitePop" or "Sitepop" or "sitepop" (all small caps) for the logo. Maybe you can suggest which one looks better.
A logo that I really like that I saw on this forum is the "everymessage logo" won by Raja. (See subject "New Product Logo $75" started by "dbirchmore").
Another logo that I like: http://inverse-logic.com/
All final materials need to be in vector format, preferably .ai (Illustrator) format.
If you are interested in participating in this, please let me know and I will determine an appropriate end date based on the number of participants (likely to be sometime late September).
Thanks for your consideration! :P

Hey dynagirl. Thanks for the submission! :)
Of the three logos that you posted, I like 1-C the best, the solid orange in the symbol catches my eye, but I was hoping for something a little more dynamic for the symbol if the typeface is going to be a clean sans-serif font. That, combined with only one color sets the logo up to look a little plain and overly simplistic for my tastes.
One thought I had for the symbol of this logo might be a spring (a coil spring) that represents springing up or popping something up (hence, sitepop). I'm not sure how it should look exactly, but it might be an idea that can be used for the symbol. This is only a suggestion.

Thanks for the submission Ryan!
The logos don't quite work for me though. I'm looking for something a little more dynamic, especially if the text is going to be straight forward sans-serif, I'd like the symbol to be a little more fancy. An alternative would be to use a more stylized and fancy font to balance out a simple symbol, but I think I would prefer it the other way around.

Hi Taldo. Thanks for the submission!
To me, this logo looks very traditional and reminds me of a logo for a traditional brick and mortor corporation (banks, insurance, etc.). This is not the image I'm looking for. I'm looking for something more modern, which I think is why I sway towards a sans-serif font. My tentative choice of the website layout (see the image in my first post in this thread) closely reflects the style I'm after: forward moving, modern, fresh and tech savvy.
Dynagirl, to me, the colors and the symbol of your logo look youth/child oriented, which is also not what I'm after. For some reason the symbol reminds me of a little bird (maybe I saw a similar symbol on a kids show when I was young).
Here's a short list of logos that have the style I'm looking for:
http://www.jubjub.com/
http://www.pixelwurx.com/
http://www.connxus.com/ (nice logo, poor website)
http://www.inverse-logic.com/
everymessage.com logo design from this forum (see first post in this thread)
Hopefully this gives a better idea of what I'm looking for.
Thanks!

Hi all! Thanks for all the logo submissions.
dynagirl, the symbol that you created in sitepop #3 looks good, I'm liking it, but can you tell me what ideas you had in mind when you created it? I think it can still be tweaked a bit to look even better, depending what you had in mind. The dropshadow with the 3D is a little much though.
Taldo, the logo is not what I'm looking for. Take a look at the links of logos I like in my previous post. They are a good indicator of the style I'm looking for.
Ryan, this logo is definitely moving in the direction of what I want. Of the three logos you submitted, I like the top one. It's very clean. However, I'd still like to see something closer in style to the logos I linked to in my previous post.

Contest close date has been set for September 25, 2003 at 3:00 pm. It may end earlier if there's a clear winner. :)
Can someone try the spring (a coil spring) idea for sitepop's symbol? I was thinking some type of coil spring would make a great symbol for this logo. The idea behind it is to "spring up" or "pop up." It would be nice to see more submissions of this if possible.
I was thinking of an upright funnel shaped spring (kind of like a tornado) that isn't too complicated or busy. Just an iconic/symbolic spring sitting upright that maybe looks like it's got some flex to it (energy). Here are some real pictures of coil springs that might help inspire:

There are 3 basic elements to the symbol: 1. the letter S, 2. popping-up, 3. population growth. The overall symbol shape is an abstract S with a counterclockwise turn to it. The tilt/angle it's on gives it a sensation of moving upward (popping up), and the pointy wedges in the center represent population growth--more people coming to a site.
The drop shadow can be dropped, of course. I was just trying to show you the symbol in a few different ways. But did you have any other ideas on how you might like to see it revised?
sitepop
09-08-2003, 10:41 AM
dynagirl.
I like the abstract 'S'. I was thinking of defining it more though. Looking at the 2D versions, can you try making the 'S' more defined so that it doesn't look so "fat" (perhaps take the mid-section of the S in a bit so that it's not the same width as the top and bottom of the S, this might be done by curving in the middle of the S more)?
Also, I don't know how this will look, but I'd like to see how the symbol looks in "swoosh" form. Basically, make the outer two lines look like swooshes. Either that or make them a little thinner.
Was this clear as mud?

Connxus, I can't remember how I stumbled on to your site, but it was while I was looking for the style of logo I wanted. Your logo is great and that's why I posted it up as an example of one that I like. Your website is not bad, but I was being ultra-critical at the time since I was critiquing logos. Please accept my apology if it has offended you in any way.
I'm happy that you have found such a wonderful resource as DesignOutpost to help you in your business endeavors. Best wishes to you! :)

Best of luck to you in your business!

After some thought, I've decided to change this contest and make it a logo design contest only. The business card layout and letterhead layout are only secondary in this design process and I may put up another contest in the future to design these. But for the present time, this contest will be for a logo design only!
The business card layout and letterhead layout are no longer necessary.
This will hopefully give designers that have passed off on this contest some incentive to submit a logo and reduce the amount of work for all designers.

Once again, thank you for all your submissions! I know that each logo takes time and effort to make so I'm grateful that each of you spent your energy making these logos.
Sparkie: The idea of eye-popping or eye-catching is cool, but the eyeballs don't really fit with what sitepop's business is. I would also perfer not having the symbol and typeface mixed in together. See my design comments at the bottom of this post.
ElKootcho: I like your logo. The symbol was not what I envisioned for sitepop, but you did a good job of making the whole package look nice, that's why I like it. My main reservation would be that it's not exactly what I had in mind. See my design comments at the bottom of this post.
wwwzone: simple conservative design. I would prefer not having the symbol and typeface mixed in together. See my design comments at the bottom of this post.
Chelle, 2square and ejlain: I like your designs very much, they are eye-catching, but unfortunately the logos are not fitting for the type of company sitepop is (I would definitely want this style of logo for something hip, fun and playful though!). Ejlain, your slogans totally cracked me up! See my design comments at the bottom of this post.
Hypnosis and dynagirl: We're getting closer to what I'm looking for! Hypnosis, I like #1 best of all your logos (I like the 3D SP symbol, but I'm not sure if I'd use it for a logo). What attracts me to these logos is your use of a 3D-style symbol and a 2D-style font. I think that makes a logo look great! See my design comments at the bottom of this post.
Taldo: Same comment as Hypnosis and dynagirl for your logo. Love the font you used. I especially like the square 'O' with the dot in it. The spring above the 'O' makes it look a little like an exclamation mark. Was this intentional? The spring is nice because it adds a 3D element to a 2D typeface, which I like, but I'm scared that the spring may look too much like a tornado, which could make the logo a little confusing. I'll have to think about this logo a bit more to see how it can be tweaked.
Design comments:
I tried to be detailed about what I was looking for in a logo in my initial post, but I realize that I wasn't as detailed in the actual design of the logo as I should have been. Here are some extra guidelines that may be helpful to you in making this font.
As I see these logos and look at other logos that I like in print and on the web, I know that I'm looking for a 3D-style symbol with a 2D-style font. Examples of such a logo would be
http://www.hostrocket.com
http://www.connxus.com
http://www.dpreview.com/
I say 3D-*style* because the symbol doesn't have to be "real 3D," meaning, the gradients and lighting effects that you would use in a real 3D graphics program aren't absolutely necessary, but instead, the symbol can just be 3D looking (for examples of what I mean, see the logos in the links above).
Also, the logo should help identify what business sitepop is in, which is Internet/web services. It would be helpful if the logo could be moderately "techie"-looking and/or modern. This might be achieved by a techie-looking symbol, font, or both (but just don't overdo it).
Thanks again to all the great designers who submitted logo designs! :D

sitepop
09-12-2003, 10:36 AM
dynagirl, I still like the spring idea, but it also has to fit with the design criteria in my last post. Your last design was a good 3D symbol with 2D text, but it didn't really convey what business sitepop was in (technology related). So what I'm trying to say is go with the spring if it can fit the criteria. If it doesn't fit, go with something else. ;)
Raja, I woke up this morning and saw your first submission. Let's just say that I'm glad that you posted a "more serious" one shortly after (don't get me wrong, your first logo is nice, but just "off") :) . Anyways, I like the symbol you created for the second submission, but I think the text needs a bit of work. I'm not sure if it's the color or the italics, but there's something about the text that's not fitting.
Thanks for your submissions!
sitepop
09-12-2003, 11:04 AM
To summarize what I'm looking for (I know people don't want to read through three pages of posts to figure this out):
1) 3D-looking symbol with 2D-looking text
2) a logo that looks *moderately* tech-like and/or modern to convey that sitepop is in the technology business (web hosting and web services). To help with this, a web page template layout was posted in the very first post of this thread to help get a feel for how the site may look like and how the logo may fit.
3) preferably, the logo's symbol is separate from the text
I've posted some links to logos that I like that are similar to what I'm looking for in previous messages.
In my opinion, Hypnosis, Raja and dynagirl have been closest to following the above three things in their logos. Let's see if there's anyone else that wants to try topping their work! :)

Hi Adil. Nice designs!
I like the second logo you submitted, but there's a lot of the same blue color in it. Could you make the text colors and the symbol color a little more distinct from each other? It would also be nice if the symbol could stand out a little bit more. Right now it seems to fade into the background, I'd like it to stand out so that the symbol could be used on its own without the text and still be distinct and eye catching eve without the text.
Thanks for your submission!

I know this contest should have ended a few weeks ago, but I've been trying to find a logo that I like that also suits the goals of the business and I've been having a really hard time doing this. I've spent days on end looking at several logos trying to see which might fit best, but haven't been totally satisfied with any particular one. So I apologize for not choosing a winner yet.
I also apologize for not leaving feedback for a couple of the final submissions. I was under the impression that after the contest end date that I had set for myself I just had to choose a logo in whatever form it was in rather than working on revising it into something more suitable. Palmer recently corrected me on this.
I apologize especially to the designers below who worked hard on submitting a logo, but didn't get any feedback from me. If you still are willing to work with me, I would sincerely appreciate any further submissions that you could make.
For what it's worth, here is some feedback for the last few submissions:
Coredesign:
For the symbol, the way you've put together the S and P is very creative, but I'm interested in something that helps symbolize what sitepop is all about so I want to stay away from the letters in the name. On a separate note, the font used for the text is a little too boxy. Something a little more refined would be nicer.
Raja:
I like the font you used for your last design. It's also a good size, but the 3D pointy brackets symbol doesn't really work for me. I can't fit it into anything that sitepop is about. Is there a different symbol that you can think of that may fit a little better?
Eagle:
I like your work here. The font looks good and I like how you've used varying sized rectangles to create a subtle 3D effect. In my mind, the rectangles may represent different (web) sites that have been created and are (as cheesy as this sounds) popping up at different stages. However, I was hoping to be able to separate the text and the symbol so that the symbol could be used on its own without the text. Can you think of a way to do this? The symbol would have to somehow either be separate from the text (I.e. on the left or the right of the text) or be "detachable" from the text. Can you find a way to create this separation?
dynagirl:
This design is a variation of one of your first submissions that I requested. Thank you for following this request. There was something that really caught my eye about your first submission that I'm trying to explore a little more. Can you put the symbol on the left of the text (instead of on top)? If you have the time, can you also try keeping the ring of the symbol in the same place, but tilt the center arrow part so that it points up more (the ring and the center arrow will then be at different angles)?
Thanks!!

Adil (Elements):
I like what you've done with the symbol by adding that extra edge to the rings. It gives it a little more depth, nice work. Can you make the symbol look a little less like it's toppling over to the side and a little more like it's bending to the side? I'm not sure if this means making the big ring smaller or angling and/or shifting the middle ring over to the left a bit, but to me, the symbol looks like it's moving a little too far over to the left. Also, can you change the colors to see if you can fit the logo in a page that looks like this (in the "companylogotype" area):

Pennyln: Thanks for your submission. My comments on it would be the same as what I had for Chelle, 2square and ejlain's initial submissions: I like your design, it's eye-catching, but unfortunately the logo is not fitting for the type of company sitepop is (I would definitely want this style of logo for something hip, fun and playful though!). I'm looking for something that is more professional and less playful.
Elements, dynagirl: Thanks for your submission. Still considering the logo...
Coredesign: your logo is very clean and professional looking. It's simplicity and professionalism looks very nice. The problem I'm having is trying to picture it fitting in the website template that I've posted up on this thread, which is keeping me from considering it as a candidate for the sitepop logo. Can you make it fit into the template?
Eagle: Thansk for your submission. Still considering the logo...
Mute Design: I looked through some of your previous work and you have some really nice designs. Unfortunately, your sitepop design submissions don't fit my criteria. See my first post in this message thread (page 1) and the 7th post from the top on page 3 (under "Design Comments") for a better idea of what I'm looking for.

oooh, dynagirl, that's a very intriguing design. Very nice. As an experiment, could you make the symbol into a tighter coil?

Here it is a little condensed.

I like your original #9 better. Could you make the symbol thicker? To add some dimension to it, can you try making it thicker near the dot (.) and progressively get thinner towards the arrow head.
Thanks!

Great idea and I actually like it better this way (has more style to it):

I'm trying to work your design into the web site layout. Do you have any colour suggestions for your logo that would better fit the web site style?
Dynagirl:
I'm considering making the font a little bolder. To balance this, I'd really like to put emphasis on the symbol for this logo. Could you really exaggerate the thickness of the symbol, like, make it really fat/thick at the dot? I'd like to try really pushing the dimensions and give the symbol a heavy perspective... giving it a quasi-3D look even though it's just a 2D symbol.

Here's one with a more pronounced 3D look:

Dynagirl, I've been looking at your latest logo over the last couple of days and I like what you've done. Is it possible to exaggerate the 3d effect on the symbol even more? Perhaps increase the perspective (even thicker and larger base at dot and thinner and smaller at arrow head) and increase the 3d shading (the logo on the website will be considerably smaller and the 3d shading almost cannot be seen when the image is reduced in size). Lastly, the 3d shading on the symbol at the point where it loops can be shaded so that the thicker base of the arrow is clearly in front of the thinner arrow head part. Here's my amateur attempt at visualizing what I mean:

Thanks dynagirl!

Time to announce the winner and end this ultra-extended contest. My apologies for how long it's gone on for. Thanks to all the designers who submitted designs. You all have wonderful talent and keep up the great work! Thanks also to Palmer for his great work in creating such a excellent resource for logo and web template design!
The winner for the sitepop logo design is dynagirl (sitepop #14). She really put in a lot of different logos (first and last submissions) and stuck with me through the whole design process. Thanks dynagirl!
Close runner-ups go to designs from Elements, Coredesign and Eagle. Thanks!!
