View Full Version : [Project Complete] Due: Apr 25 - Logo for Pretheory, a Small Software Company - $180
Admin code added by Abby - 5HT760177S062792R 7FH786091A433391F
We are looking for a logo for our small software company, Pretheory. You can learn a bit more about who we are from our site and blog (http://www.pretheory.com), but note that the logo does NOT need to match the current site design, because we are going to be redesigning our website and blog soon.
We are a small software startup based in Denver Colorado. We design consumer web services and products based on community driven interaction.
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
We would like to find a logo to use on our site. We are also interested in finding a symbol or design that could be used with or without the full company name to brand various elements of our site.
Is there any specific color scheme that you would like us to use in the logo?
We’d like the color scheme to be simple, perhaps just one color (other than black, white, or gray). We would like to avoid green in our design if possible.
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
No
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
Simplicity and strength.
What is your tagline or slogan? None
Where will your new logo be used? Website, business cards, letterhead, etc.
What sets you apart from your competitors? Creativity and simplicity
Is there any specific font that you would like us to use in the logo?
No
Here are some logos/icons that appeal to us:

a classic-modern play with your name that I hope you'd like :)
Hey, this is a great first design. Some thoughts:
I'm really liking the simple color scheme (although red isn't a hard requirement, I do like it in this design). I like the "p" icon, and I'd like to see different variations on the "p" although I'm also interested in an icon that incorporates "pt" or even an abstract design that doesn't relate to the letters.
Although I like the differing fonts, I'm not as crazy about emphasizing the "th" in the middle of Pretheory. If there is differing fonts, I'd more expect the difference to be between "pre" and "theory" (although different fonts is not a hard requirement).
Also, while not a hard requirement, I somewhat prefer the "stronger" fonts like the one you used in "Pre" and "eory" over the lighter, wispier font used in the "p" icon and the "th"
Overall, it's a strong start and I'm looking forward to more designs

ok, here it comes again :)
Cool! I like this better than the last one. I like the icon, especially how the letters flow into the surrounding circle. That's a cool concept, although I'm wondering if there is a variation of that concept that is a bit less wispy and light.
This is a promising direction, but I'd like to see other concepts as well. Check out the logos that I linked in the original post to see the style we are going for - strong, simple, with a bold logo.
Thanks!

Hello:) Here is my concept for your logo....simple, fresh, strong....:)
pracus - I like your designs with separate icon better than the one with "Pretheory" inside the red rectangle.
guetizo - I like the general layout (icon above some text). I like the fact that the text is somewhat distinctive, so it could stand by itself if necessary (without the icon). However, I don't particularly like the icon itself.
tini1 - Cool icon - I definitely like the solid one over the one with the gradient. I like the direction, but I'm thinking if the icon isn't just a bit too complicated to read easily.
All in all, the designs look cool...

bhb,
Thanks for the prompt feedback.
Just a quick note, you notice that the icon is a combination of letters "p" and "t". :)
I'll try to bring a new concept soon.
guetizo - Yeah, I noticed that - it's quite cool :) . I am just thinking their may be another way to work the letters together that reads a little bit more easily.
Oh, one more quick note - we won't actually need the words "software development" in the logo itself. Thanks!

Hello:) Thank you for feedback......I rotated the icon, making it easier to read...:)Thanks
Cool designs!
Logoholik - I like the first design quite a bit. Could perhaps the icon be inside a rectangle (perhaps with rounded corners) instead of a circle? I like the font for "pretheory" a lot. I'm not sure if it's possible, but I'm wondering if there is any way to tweak the "pretheory" text just slightly so it's a tad more distinctive (for when we need to use the text separate from the icon). Perhaps slightly different colors? I'm not 100% sure on this.
Can we also try the icon above the text, instead of to the left?
For the second design, I like the font again (and the different colors), but I don't like the icon nearly as much as the first design.
tini1 - Rotating the logo definitely helps the readability, but it still feels a bit busy to me. Can we maybe remove the outermost border (you might have to swap the white and the red to make this work)?
Also, while I like how the P & T interact, I'm don't like the shape of the overall icon as much - in particular, the chunk that is missing from the bottom right. Is there anyway to simplify the design and have the outline be a rectangle instead of a more complicated shape?

Cool! I like the icon - but I definitely like the "flat" ones better than the one with a gradient and reflections. I like both the 2 color one as well as the one-color one (with the thin line between the T and P).
The icon reads pretty well, but I'm wondering if it would still read if the P and T were flipped. I know the P would then be backwards, but I wonder how that would look. Right now it's cool, but in some sense the T comes before the P (it almost looks like 1P). I like the way the letters are slightly angled back, it makes the design very interesting.
I like this direction and would definitely like to see some variations.

And flipped version.
http://www.blesseville.com/do/pre3.jpg
Wow, lots of great stuff today!
Logoholik - I really like the icon with the rounded-corner square better than the circle one. Looks great. And it looks pretty cool big with the text under it. Great stuff.
SecretAgestRege - Cool concept, but I think we're after something a little "flatter" (i.e. not 3-Dish) and perhaps text that's a little stronger (not quite as thin).
Blesseville - I like the flat version you posted of your design and thanks for posting the "reversed" one, it was definitely something I wanted to see. I'm not sure which one works better yet - the TP version is definitely nicer on the eyes, but again, I sort of see 1P, while the PT version make more sense give the fact that P comes before T in "Pretheory", but it comes off a little weirder looking. That's a tough call for me. I'm not sure what other feedback to give except that it's a very cool concept, but both current designs seem to not quite hit the nail on the head somehow. Is there any variation you can try? Perhaps using just the P instead of both P and T?
Everyone - I've seen a lot of great work on the icon (love a lot of these designs), but I haven't seen as much work on the text itself. There have been a lot of "split color" designs, but not too much else in this space - and we may need to use the text separately from the icon on the web site.
Does anyone have any ideas for the text itself? For instance, this logo caught my eye the other day

Thanks again for all the great work!

==========
(1) design pending review
SecretAgentRege - Very cool stuff! I like the "teardrop icon" as well as the interesting connected text on your design - it's a creative angle, although in general, I've tended to like having all the text on one line.
The other design (with the lines above and under the text) is interesting as well (and I like the color scheme), although it's overwhelming for me to look at. My eye almost doesn't quite know where to go.
Like I said, cool ideas. Sorry I can't say more about what I'm looking for with the "distinctive" text - I'm not entirely sure yet. I think the interested text I like the most so far is probably the one by freetime, with the distinctive O, although that one feels a little "space-agey" to me.
Logoholik - I've really liked your icons - do you have any ideas on how to make the text just a touch more distinctive? Something subtle, so the text can still be placed next to the logo, but perhaps just interesting enough that it can be recognizable on it's own?
A slight tweak on the font, an interesting letter, something else?
As an another example of what I'm talking about, check out the text for Burton

Note that the N is different than a standard N, making the text just a bit more interesting

logoholik - can you try reversing the 't' in the icon to the other side of the 'p'. Similar to what you have now, but flip it and put it on the right side fo the inside.
Blesseville - cool concept, I like the t within the P again. I like the rounded corner rectangle one the most. Can you try the following - instead of the pointy right side of the P, can you make it curved? Right now it kind of looks like a house on its side. Also, can you make the PT combination just slightly bigger inside the rounded rectangle? Just to fill out the space a bit more?
Titania - I like the P and T together, as well as the way the P in the icon is the same as the P within the text, but I just don't like this combination quite as much. It's elegant, but it reminds me too much of a ribbon.

SecretAgentRege - I like the direction you're pursuing in #47. It feels a little to "heavy" for me right now, but I like the idea of having the "pre" a slightly different size from "theory" and having upper and lower-case letters in the words. Perhaps try taking out the line under "pre" and keeping pre and theory aligned along the bottom (so the top is slightly different).
nhr - A strong icon - I like it quite a bit. It's not quite as immediately recognizable as a P and T combined, but it's interesting and the letters are there if you look carefully. It does read a little bit like an 'F' -- I'm not sure exactly how to fix that though. I'd like to see any tweaks or variations on this general icon that you've thought of. Very cool.
Logoholik - thanks for flipping that. Not sure which version I like better, I'll need to stare at it some more.
Blesseville - much better, I like the icon a lot better now. Simple, strong, very cool.

:)
Sorry for the lack of posts - I was out of town this past weekend.
nhr - Thanks for the edit (#62). I still think I like the first one better, but it's good to see a variation. I also like #63 quite a bit, although I like the two with a single color in the logo (orange and white or black and white) much better than the black and orange one. Cool concept!
Logoholik - Hey, one thing I hadn't noticed was in #50, you opened up the top of the o, which is subtle but cool. I like it. Not sure how I feel about the reverse t ... I'm wondering if we could reverse the t in the text as well to make it match? It might look terrible or very cool, I'm not sure.

:) well it looks interesting. But honestly, in order to keep your brand in balance, my suggestion would be to pick unique, identifiable icon combined with less complicated, but still unique typography - so they do not clash together. It is always good to have such balance in logo, rather than to make it too complex logo+type wise...
http://www.logoholik.com/do/logoholik_pretheory_08.gif
First of all, I wanted to say that I've really been impressed with the designs I've seen in this forum. Thank you everyone for such great, creative designs! It was really hard for me to choose just one.
After careful consideration, I've decided that Logoholik's designs are the best match for my company.
Again, a big thanks to all the designers and I look forward to collaborating with you all on future design projects!

Bojan,
Thanks for the great work so far.
Our first question at this point is - how much will it cost to get the illustrator/photoshop files for the design? High resolution images are fine, but if we need to tweak the design at all (or use it as a watermark, or anything else), we'll need the source files.
Our favorite design is a variation of #22. We like the color setup (black "pre" and red icon and "theory" as well as the size and placement of the icon). However, we'd like you to use the "h" and "o" from later designs (the ones with the small "cuts"). We've decided that we like the "t" facing forward in both the icon and the text.
Although this design is great, we were hoping we could see a few small tweaks. Please use #22 (with the new 'h' and 'o') as the basis of these tweaks.
First of all, we'd like to see some different colors. We really like the color scheme in design, but can you try replacing the red with a few other colors. Ideally, we'd like to see three other colors - one blue, and two others that you think look good.
Also, the y in "theory" bothers us a bit. It feels a little blocked or jagged to us. Part of the problem may be that the short and long "legs" don't quite connect as we would expect - there is that little horizontal piece connecting them. Is there something you could do to the y to fix this?
Thanks!
Leclerk

Not a problem. Here is a revision. Your final logo package will have original adobe illustrator vector ai file which you can edit freely (if you have required skills of course :)

Awesome, that looks great! We'll go with the red one for now (and we'll change the colors using the illustrator file if we want to later).
