General

We are looking for a high class, consumer orientated homepage for our dining/restaurant website Treat (www.treatcard.co.uk - not live yet) and an example of 1 other page.

We have had excellent brochures, logos etc. designed but the current web template is poor by comparison.

About Treat

Treat is a dining and lifestyle card aimed at affluent professionals in the UK.

The card entitles owners to get special deals at top restaurants, bars and shops.

The brand is upmarket, luxurious and modern.

Design

Colours, the logo and the general layout of the page have already been decided and can be seen in the attached mockup. You have therefore all the correct button names and rough placement, the text we want and where we want it roughly.

The brochures – especially the consumer brochure provide a complete guide to the style, images and look and feel we want.

All photography must come from our brochures or from the existing site – also note that we want the picture of the woman drinking wine (cover of consumer brochure) to be prominent on the homepage. EXCEPT the top banner and the picture behind the left hand buttons which can be anything provided it is appropriate.

Corporate colours can be taken from the Consumer leaflet and must be matched exactly.

We are looking for a very striking look and attention to detail on buttons, effects etc.

We don’t want anything radical.

What we want is a very highly polished front end for the website.

Pay particular attention to the buttons, the top banner and the layout of elements and space in the homepage.

The site must be 800 pixels wide and will be constructed in HTML with one or two small Flash elements (these can be shown as a static snapshot).

Whats Wrong With the Mockup?

Overall there are two problems:

1) It looks very dark and not very welcoming.
2) There are more specific problems listed below.

Top

Text “The lifestyle card…” should be in the main page body.
Photo looks terrible – is a very poor use of it. This is the only place where you can opt to use another picture entirely of your choice.
Top navigation buttons are very poorly spaced.

Left

Picture of champagne glass looks terrible.
Everything is badly spaced.
Red button text/font too small to read easily.

Middle (Main Page Body

Too many fonts and font sizes.
Spacing of elements is bad.

Other Websites

This is our competition. We need a site which clearly looks better than these:

Thanks for starting and for both entries. Here are a few points:

Both Designs

On the Latest Offers thing, remove the free section and also make sure the entries are not broken with line breaks. Ie. Loft, West End should appear on a single line.

Design 1

1) Yellow colour isn't useable. I've attached a palette for you to use. The red on the design you did below is excellent.

2) Too many font sizes and colours in the main page body.

3) We do like it but it needs sexing up. The design below is a lot more polished.

Design 2

1) Run the about - home navigation along the top, below the dotted line.
2) Too much horizontal space is use on the left hand side for the navigation and the right hand side is too crowded. Try to get the navigation more standardised like the design above - this should open up space for the main page body.
3) It looks fantastic though our director is worried that this type of effect has been overused in templates recently...

Other than that its a great start.

Kind regards,

Henri

Hello Henri

Thanks for the comments, I will proceed working on them today

In terms of a classy look you are definitely on the right lines. Well done.

I would suggest you:

a) Make much better use of space. We've only got 800 pixels and I need as much of the page body as possible for listings of restaurants etc. Your design is just too loose.

b) Check the comments I made about the other design. There are some minor template amendments which apply to yours too.

Our director Guy is going to take a look too.

Many thanks,

Henri

Thanks for all the entries. Just to reiterate Henri's comments the site needs to look modern, slick, stylish, sophisticated and well designed. IAt this stage I would say that Aliska is on the right lines out of the 3. Would like to see more designs though!
Many thanks for all your work so far.

Hello to all designers!
Thanks for all your efforts so far. I have a few suggestions:
- give all boxes and buttons curved edges (similar to the Treat Card itself)
- animated line that will contain Press quotes
- the latest offers section should be made to stand out
Many thanks,
Guy

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your entry. Ouch you are close I think. Can I suggest:

1) You develop the red 'awning' at the top into a restaurant awning - but very subtly. By awning I mean that little curtain at the top of some restaurants which overhangs tables outside. You only need to suggest this with a bit of perspective by foreshortening the top piece of red so it is three dimensionally the top of the awning....(hope you understand)

Like: http://www.omearacamping.com/images/HotProducts/HouseAwningFront.jpg
But without the frills and pattern, and with a very narrow 'top' as it is the front which is important.

2) The Treat card should be positioned horizontally never diagonally.

3) Main page body is near perfect. Very good.

4) Left Hand buttons - too 'naff'. Look at Brian or Aliska's buttons above. Yours need to be very modern - no motif above and more futuristic rather than old fashioned.

5) Overall I'd take out any complex/fancy pattern backgrounds and go with something contemporary.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you and thanks again.

Everyone.

We'd like to thank you all for your submissions so far. There are now three very strong contenders but we're split on who is ahead.

We are very grateful to all entrants and we are posting several projects a month so I am sure even if you don't win we will be working with you soon.

We'll post comments on each entry individually shortly.

Henri

Anne, you've almost got it. I'm going to have to be quick and blunt because of the number of entries so apologies (see last posting)...

1) Awning needs to be more subtle - foreshorten it more so the top part occupies less space vertically.

2) Treat card in top left hand corner needs to be same proportions as actual card.

3) Your buttons need to be more simple, cleaner. The only way to demonstrate what I mean is to look at Brians new entry.

4) Your page body has been pipped at the post by Brian. His is easier to read.

Overall its great - its almost there.

tri

Brian. Apologies for the brevity here...

Overall - especially the page body and the grey left hand side section - some of it is perfect. However:

1) (Major) Buttons problems.

The red buttons look rushed - both left and top.
The top buttons should be evenly sized and smaller - like text links with a simple effect on them (like Aliskas last ones)
The left hand side buttons need to be larger and more polished.

The left hand side buttons (important) are less prominent compared to the top buttons (not important). Can you reverse their relative size?

2) (Minor) The London photo - due to the way its been cropped - looks terrible. Can you swap the woman with glass for the London one.

3) (Minor) Treat card in top left hand corner needs to be same proportions as actual card. It looks a lot better at the bottom of the left hand nav. I would just make a larger version of this and put it at the top.
