Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?

Ray Edwards

Need color and black & white version. See my self-made logo at http://rayedwards.com

What type of product or service do you offer?

Copywriting and Marketing Consultant, Speaker, Author, Trainer

How long have you been in business?

25+ Years

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?

To be the premiere Sales Copywriter and Marketing Consultant for online marketers.

What are your long term goals?

To build an organization that allows people to achieve their dreams of owning their own business and achieving freedom.

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?

May 7, 2007

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience

Anyone interested in having their own online business, and who knows that persuasive, compelling copy is required to sell their products or services.

Who would you like to add to your audience?

Small to medium sized businesses ($100,000 - $10 Million in revenue)

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?

Clean, elegant, Web 2.0 without appearing too "trendy". No cartoonish logos.

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)

Blue, Black, Orange or Red. Sparing on the red. Blue and black are first choices. I think these colors seem more corporate, substantial, and trustworthy.

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?

No, though I think I would like to avoid the obvious (pens and inkwells, for instance).

My company is growing, and we are doing so much more than "just" copywriting.

The name of my company is Ray Edwards International, Inc.

That may be a bit too much to fit into a logo -- but I think it's important you know that the logo you create represents all of this entity, not just me personally.

So,I'm leaving this somewhat open. I have even though of a logo that simply incorporates the "R" (ala the Wordpress logo)... but then that's just my random thought. I'm not the designer -- you are!

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?

Professional
Substantial
Cutting Edge
Web 2.0
Established but not stodgy

What is your tagline or slogan?

Ray Writes. You Profit.

But... I'm not really looking to include this in the logo (I think. Surprise me if you disagree!)

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?

Trust me over everyone else who does what I do.

Where will your new logo be used?

Web (blog, site)
Print (business cards, stationery, etc.)

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos? List competitive URLs if possible

I don't think of these guys as "competitors", but rather and those with whom I share the abundance. These are sites of FRIENDS of mine, and I like their designs -- but obviously I want something that is different from theirs.

http://successdoctor.com
http://strategicprofits.com
http://www.copyblogger.com (never met the dude, but I love his blog)
http://tompeters.com (okay, I don't know Tom Peters, but I dig him)
http://sethgodin.com (I do know Seth, but not on a "pick up the phone and call me anytime" kind of basis)

What sets you apart from your competitors?

I have 25+ years in the radio advertising business, where I worked with clients in every imaginable field of business, writing their copy and doing their promotions and marketing.

Also, I use a scientific process of testing and revising ad copy for continuous improvement of results.

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
More Sales, More Profits, More Often

Wow -- I appreciate the quick response! Thanks to each of you for working on this.

Relevant... I like the first one best (with the "R" to the left). It doesn't feel "bold" enough to me, but I like the direction you're headed with it. I "get" the one with the sheet of paper floating over it, but I'm not crazy about that one.

Offbeat... I like version 2 with the glassy button, but I don't like the little "e" in the center of the "R". Don't care for version 1.

NHR... I love the Web 2.0 feel of both version 1 and 1.1. I prefer that shiny, glassy look. I don't "get" the little backwards comma inside the R.

And... anyone else wanna step up to the plate. These are a good start, but no "eureka" moment yet...

without the "e"

Version 4

Offbeat, I like the "standing on glass" effect in Version 4, although the name of my company is not "Ray Edwards Inc" so I couldn't use that. The logo either needs to have just the name "Ray Edwards", or the entire name of the company "Ray Edwards International, Inc".

I like Offbeat's version 3 best so far, but feel as though there could be a better version yet; anyone is welcome to try their hand at a variation. Offbeat, can we tighten up the white space between the orange button "R" and the other text... and I'm wondering how it might look with a shadow or the "standing on glass" effect? Also... what about a fine lined diagonal pattern faded (like a series of 45° lines like alot of the web 2.0 sites) in the orange box behind the "R"? I'm not 100% sold on that idea, just wondering how it might look.

Here it is with the reflection

Both paper and pencil. I can try different color combinations if you like.

One other thought... can I see a version with and without the "International, Inc"? of Version 3.

OffbeatDesign

Sure thing

blesseville... I'm intrigued. Can you "gloss that up" and give it more of that shiny, glass button look?

So far, Version 5 by Offbeat seems to be the front-runner.

I'm still hoping a couple more folks can step up to the plate like blesseville did, and give us a different vision to consider.

Offbeat... you are FAST.

Okay, can I see version 8 with the "R" button in (1) Red and (2) Blue (sky-blue or darker, but nothing that could be confused with navy).

Also...I really like Version 9, too.

I'm having my team look these over.

A little darker on the blue, add the standing glass effect, and we may have it.

Offbeat, can I see #23 with the paper in a canary yellow (like a post it)...

and #27 with the "international, Inc." under the "Ray Edwards"... (does the reflection need to go all the way across?)

It's down to these two.

OffbeatDesign

Reflection can go on both elements if you want. Sometimes it's better to just give focus to the logo. Your choice.

I don't really know how to proceed, but I want to actually buy TWO of your designs (I'll test them against one another to see which seems to work best for my marketing).

And I have some minor revisions. What do we do next?

I've moved this project to the revisions forum.

You can work out the purchase of the other design with Offbeat privately and the revisions on the primary design here.
