nhr - thanks!

This is a great first entry. I'm not sure about the symbol - I like it & won't write it off completely but I kinda wonder if it's a little "flowery" - just my initial reaction. The font is cool though - I dig it.

Lets see more ideas folks :)

cheers,
scott

bump for other designers... i know there's still plenty of time left, but part of that is factored in for refinements when we narrow choices down.

thanks :)

Hi pruettsk,

Here is my entry, let me know what do you think :)

Agustin -

Thanks! It's not a bad design, but I'm not feeling it for what I'm looking for. The font doesn't jive with me b/c it's a little too techy, & the symbol feels a little too "open" in this, perhaps with more white space than I'd like. Again, not bad by any means, just not my cup of tea.

best,
scott

nhr -

Thanks again. Assuming you prefer honest feedback, here goes: that symbol looks pretty elementary, especially compared to your first submission. I'm not too keen on it looking like a shield, although I kind of can see your train of thought if the intent was to play with putting a "C" and a "D" together.

I like the abstract-ness used in your first one better. It reminds me in some ways of Media Recover's (www.mediarecover.com):

http://www.mediarecover.com/images/logo.gif

Based upon this idea, maybe you, or anyone else, could tinker with something that has a form of implication of something breaking out of a typical mold, or "thinking outside of the box," if you will. Keep it simple though, and please don't literally use a [3d] box to illustrate the notion. :)

Media Recover's is cool b/c it has that "digital" component to it - obviously I'm not suggesting to copy it, but it's a concept I like, if that spurs on any other creative ideas... maybe with something more fluid (i.e. having some curves)...

Thanks again nhr, but I'm still not feeling it... I think this should go a different direction altogether, but I'm not quite sure what that is yet.

Other concepts to possibly play with - I live in an area close to the mountains - maybe some sort of abstract icon representing that (e.g. www.brms.com , www.gregorypacks.com), tied in with something that has some form of reference to being "digital" - perhaps in the form of a solid line, but then breaking up (idea being: into pixels) & trailing off in a similar fashion to Gregory's, but without being an obvious copy of their idea...

thoughts?

hmm... I think we're getting closer, but not yet. This feels too blocky (if that's a word). Thanks once again nhr :)

I'm not against the idea of intertwining a symbol of sorts in with the text (in terms of placement), or changing the layout around. Just FYI.

any other designers out there care to take a stab at this as well?

best,
scott

thanks Blesseville.

The symbol used here doesn't jive with what I'm looking for. It's kinda neat, but not my cup of tea.

Check out post #10 (quoted below) for some added direction:

sorry for the slow reply this time folks, been a little busy the past few days.

nhr, thanks for even more revisions. The version in post #15 is the one I like the best of yours thus far.

post #16: doesn't do much for me.

Deanna, thanks! I'll be honest, this doesn't do much for me & reminds me of another logo I've seen elsewhere... I want to say it's Prudential, but I think there's another that this is similar to as well.

Freetime, thank you as well. It's a little too futuristic-looking though.

cheers,
scott

I'm realizing that I could use a symbol/icon that can be used independently from the text if need be, but when used side-by-side (or on top, etc), everything still flows well.

If anyone has ideas I gladly welcome them.

hey nhr - I actually got to tinkering with your latest - it might have some potential.

What can you come up with that sort of uses the idea illustrated here? It needs something different (this is just a quick & dirty edit), but once the "bubbles" were gone I liked it better.

I'm looking for a little more punch than this has - and something more creative/unique than text sitting on a simple box with rounded corners. Any ideas?

The colors will change too, but those can be addressed later :)

pruettsk

hmm... let's try another font... perhaps one w/ serifs, e.g. baskerville, big caslon, or something similar?

worth a shot.

Here are a few other fonts. If you see any you like, I can match the "C" cutout match; these were just quickies.

Jennifer - thanks for the other renditions. None of them really jive with me though.

Nhr - thanks for this revision. Can you tweak this a little so the line on the top is more defined vs. looking like a brush stroke? Additionally, if you could take the "pixels" and make them a uniform size & laid out like two rows on a checkerboard, that'd be great. Also... the text... can you compress the vertical scale to 90%? I did that with my little edit in post #21. :) I don't care for v.7.1 with the background, FYI.

Anyone else want to take a stab @ this?

Hope you all are having a great weekend!

Hi

pruettsk
05-15-2007, 08:21 AM
huh... this one's pretty cool Tyler, thanks! I'm not a fan of the John Deere color scheme (1st impression), but I haven't settled on colors as of yet.

Let me chew on this one for a bit. If you feel like making some changes, a more earthy color selection would be preferable, and perhaps you could add a ".com" as well, maybe under the right side of the word "digital." Dunno if that would work, or throw some balance off...?

nhr, I'd put a .com at the end of yours too but it's easier to add w/in your design, so I figured I'd mention that later.

cheers,
scott

Tyler -

Thanks man, those look good! I like the layout of v.1.1 best, and the bold text really helps. In 1.2 the digital.com feels a little detached (doesn't flow as well), so I'm not a huge fan.

The colors in 1.1 work well. You & nhr (in an older design) either coincidentally have found an good color combo, or have done a little research - orange & blue are local university colors (UVA). I'm still leaning towards something more subdued/earthy, but I like this. The ones in 1.2 don't "feel" quite right.

more later... thanks again.
Scott

p.s. anyone else? I like choices :)

oops, sorry for the delay.

Tyler - thank you for your last response.

Logoholik - thanks for jumping in. :) I'll be honest - I don't quite "get it." This is a clean design but it just feels a little too random/abstract to me.

Well, the deadline has come (and passed). Thanks to everyone for the submissions and time spent on this. The choices we settled on were Tyler's and NHR's, and we'll be using NHR's, although some refinements are needed. Tyler - thanks a bunch. Your design is strong & I like it, but for my intended use, NHR takes an edge with his design.

NHR - I need to get you to change the color scheme & beef up the design a little (stronger colors, *maybe* a different font). Side-by-side w/ Tyler's, his carries more punch & I like/need that. Admins/mods - let me know the next steps from here.

NHR - talk soon, thanks again :)

Ah, a name! Thanks Jennifer.

Neb -

colors: I don't have a specific colorset yet, but can make minor edits in photoshop later. For now, I'd like to switch the color scheme you used to use a blue close to what Tyler used (PMS 301), and possibly some green-ish tones similar to the ones here: http://www.ilemoned.com/wp-content/themes/dark/images/logo.gif - it needs to stand out on white though.

font: do you know what the one used here is? http://www.xenonmods.com/ebay/rubicon_pic1.jpg again, I need something with more punch. I know this may mess up the alignment of the mountain symbol a little, but assuming it's not hard to tweak... :)

last and least, once we nail these down, can I get you to do a wet floor reflection gradient (or whatever it's called) for the text?

thanks much,
Scott

Neb - update on the font - closest I found to the one I'd like to try is ITC Eras Demi. I'm seeing if I have a copy on another computer.

You around?

edit: yup, had a copy of the font.... so *maybe* something like this. If you have other ideas that could look/flow better, I welcome them. I took the text, reduced the letter height to 65%, stretched your mountain image 150% for width, and changed the colors. I'm not sold on the .com placement but it fit there for the time being.

ideas? thoughts? help me refine this thing.

thanks,
scott

How about that:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b92/nhrdesign/DO_/cville90_nhr.png

You have a good balance between mountain line and "V", also between "." (in ".com") and "T".

:)

pruettsk
05-26-2007, 01:22 PM
not there yet...

okay I fiddled around in Photoshop to get an idea of what I'd like.

1) Font: take ITC Eras Demi (found a copy online if you don't have it: right-click > save (http://www.tamez.us/fonts/Eras%20Demi%20ITC.ttf)) & decrease the vertical scale of the text to 50%. Use all caps.

2) Take the mountain symbol & adjust so the angle of the left side matches the right angle of the 'v' in cville. HOWEVER, I'd like to keep the height of the symbol around 2x the size of the text (i.e. the entire logo should only be a little higher than 'cvilledigital' stacked three times - I still want a space between the text & the symbol). This will probably require modifying the symbol a little, whether to include another "peak" or extending the right line more.

3) .com placement - let's remove it completely. It doesn't feel right above the rest of the text.

Thanks! I know I'm probably a pain, but I want to make this as good as possible. :)

How do I go about getting the files? A scalable .eps is what I need the most; if you have a high-resolution .psd w/ layers, that'd be great as well.

Thanks for your work on this!
