Company Details

1a) Name of the Company:
eJOSS

1b) Company Tag Line or slogan:
Job Openings for Social Scientists

1c) Do you have a company logo?
Yes, but color scheme is still up in the air depending on how template progresses. See attachment to project.

1d) Do you have a corporate visual identity (a customized (non stock) logo and color scheme carried out throughout your office, stationery, business cards, etc.)?
No, which is why we need a fresh web template!

1e) what is the nature of your business:
eJOSS is a job market portal for PhDs in the social sciences. It connects recent graduates (job market candidates), employers, and references (in the social sciences, references send recommendations only on request and directly to the employer).

Briefly describe your products or services:
The services are the following:

- For job market candidates, we simplify the job search and application process.

- For employers, we provide better access to job market candidates and offer tools so that hiring institutions can organize their applications and structure their recruiting process

- For references, we simplify the referencing process (i.e. automate the sending of recommendations / reference letters)

1f) who is your target market? Who are you hoping to reach with your site?
Our target market is the following

- Job Market Candidates: recent PhDs in the social sciences

- Employers: Universities, Government Organizations, Private Sector Research (quant. Finance, Consulting etc.), NGOs

- References: University Professors
Our focus is international, but the USA is by far the most important market.

Our mission is to establish eJOSS as the leading portal in the field that places nearly all recent PhDs in the social sciences.

Website Details

1b) Do you have an existing website?

No

2b) IMPORTANT: Please list at least 3 URLs (web addresses) of high quality sites that you like the look of (these do not have to be sites who’s business is similar to yours. It aids us in determining what your design style is.) Please consider layout, colors, navigation, graphics, and typography.

Target resolution would be 1024px x 768px.

Layout:
Layout is two column fixed. Landing page would be single column.

Check xing.com for layout. Screenshots will be supplied on request.

There is Monster demo which could give quite a good idea of layout but DO NOT consider feel and look: http://www.monster.co.uk/siteDemo/761_Monster_Jobseeker.htm

Colors:
Corn silk (#E8E5D4) background, medium purple (#472A74) highlighted elements, white content area, font color black (http://www.nyu.edu/)

Or

light olive (#8C9163) background, dark indian red (#910414) header and highlighted elements, light yellow content area (#FFFFCC), font color black (http://www.harvard.edu/)

Navigation:

Main horizontal navigation (optional horizontal sub-navigation) and the left column sub-navigation. Horizontal footer navigation.

Graphics:

Typography:
Sans-serif font should be used. Usage of common web fonts for non graphic elements is must.

3b) what colors or color schemes would you like?

Different color sets should be supplied for public content (landing page, public search, etc…), employers section, candidates section and referees section.

Usage of web safe colors is not of ultimate importance.

4b) List the Navigation links for your Site:
Home, Employers, Candidates, References, About Us

5b) What type of look are you trying to achieve?
Professional but yet fresh and funky appearance. www.xing.com is excellent example

6b) Please provide the addresses of competitors' sites, if possible:

http://www.econ.upf.edu/aee_job_market/
www.monster.com
http://www.aeaweb.org/joe/

7b) Do you have any images for use in the design of your site? If not, do you have images, can you offer suggestions of what type of imagery you feel would be most suitable for your website:

We have no images. Use of stock photography would be OK. Images should emphasize connection between youthful, dynamic candidates and professional, willful employers. Only few images on landing page would be needed.

Deadlines and Deliverables

1c) What is the deadline for the design of your project?
ASAP - and we really mean as SOON as possible.

2c) What is required breakdown of the files you require our designers to supply you with on finalization of your project?
Photoshop file with elements separated in layers. It would be good if each color scheme is supplied in separate file. All fonts used should be attached.

Hi designers,

We thought we would post some interior pages from Xing.com as further inspiration.

We want the homepage to emulate some of these features - not just be an entry portal.

Thanks,
Blair

Could you be more specific about exactly which features you would like to see on the homepage please? Thanks :)

Also, do you think my design is heading in the right direction or should I start over?

Hi Clink:

From the client:

Your proposal is good, although I have some comments
- I think the colored oval's in the top bar (containing also the logo) do not look professional, although it is not a bad idea.
- I also like the round transition to a different shade of purple in the menu bar
- I am not sure about the colored circle oval's in the content area are fine (keep them for the moment)
- can you reshape the menu bar
- Regarding the: menu if you see the xing.com screenshots the active tab has a different shade of green can you do this in different shades of purple (or different shades of blue or other fitting coolers that you can choose)
- For the moment, either get rid of the graphic elements or make them more professional: the reading glass, the suitcase and the paperclip (also the piece of paper the paperclip is supposed to hold)
- I like the logo in the background on bottom of the page
- I like the way the stuff at the bottom of the page is organized
- I like the shape of the content area
- The style element that that the two links (job hunter and search jobs) wrap around the content area is interesting
- Regarding the area that is supposed to be a peace of paper held by the paperclip: as you can see on the landing page that we have posted (NOTE: the second version, also NOTE: the colors are just there for logical purposes and not intended to suggest any color to you, the positioning of bars etc is however.) there is some text "Welcome to electronic Job Openings for Social Scientists, the free Job Market resource PhDs in the social sciences" that should belong there. (you can keep the learn more button)

Hi everyone,

Initially, I wasn't sure about doing this but the client had a suggestion and now I think its a good one.

Instead of posting just the homepage portal, can you also post a page like you see from Xing.xom with more elements like the navigation once you are logged in and other features. You can mimic many of the features on Xing for now and I'll provide additional feedback.

Elena, I like your direction and the colors really pop for me.

Anne, I love your simplicity and I think the "scent of information" is really prevalent.

What would like to see from all three of you is a mockup of the internal page to get a stronger sense of your design aesthetics.

Thank you!

Hey Blair,

Here is my vision for the “Employer” page, a clean design that the employer can search via the search engine for the right candidate to fill the positions, they have to offer.

Alternatively, I can add a sign-up button, so the employer can add their jobs. As I am not to sure, how you are structurally going to layout your sites architecture I wanted to show you my general concept first and we can go from there.

Also a couple of recent placement pieces should give the employers confidence in the process.

:)

Direct From the Client:

----------------------------------

FOR ANNE starting from your Design in Gray/Purple (Message #18 on the Desingoutpost message board) could you:
- Remove ALL pictures (clients prefer it like that)
- On this page (Message #18), the large box that currently has a picture of a guy with a goatee can you: make that 3 fields, one for "Candidates Sign Up" "Employer Sign Up" and "References Sign Up.
- Also, on this page #18, and for each of the abovementioned fields can you introduce a symbol for each of the 3 parties; please see the attached PowerPoint file.
- Also, on this page #18, can you experiment somewhat with the menu bar? (maybe the menu bar could be purple, but that is up to you)
- The internal page (Message 24) seems fine, but again, maybe you can experiment with the menu bar. Please also remove the picture.

FOR ELENA:

-From your 3rd landing page (Message #12), could you remove ALL pictures, the "looking for a job" text in the banner image and the circles/ovals in the background of the banner image.
- On the banner image on message #12, there are currently 2 buttons ("employers login" "customers Login") can you add a third "reference login"?
- again for on #12, can you change the menu bar so that it corresponds to the colours of the logo? (or is that the same colour?). Also, feel free to experiment with the colours of the menu bar, maybe the active Tab can be of a different shade of red instead of brown?.
- Also, on this page #12 and one the three buttons, can you introduce a symbol for each of the 3 parties; please see the attached PowerPoint file.
- Next your Message #22 (internal page). I like that with maybe one comment. The search symbol "reading glass" for the search function is not stylized enough. We will need some symbols like on xing, please again see the power point file attached.

Thank you all.

From the client!

Dear Anne,

Since people really like your design you are the likely winner of the design project ! However, I would like to ask you for some further changes in the design. We can declare you the winner of the project already now, but I should be clear that I would like you to do the following things thereafter:

1.Menu Bar: please take the Menu bar from you last design (Msg. # 30, two shades of Purple)
2.Sub-menus: I noticed that none of your designs has a submenu. Can you add something like the submenu of Elena (Message #11) or the submenu on xing.com 3.General Shape of the context box: I know that this will sound boring to you but some people had a strong aversion against the sloping upper end of the page. Please straighten that 4.The symbols for Candidates, References, and Employers seem fine for the moment, but I may ask you for limited changes later.
5.Can you reproduce all the 7 symbols that we posted on "simple sings.giv" file on message # 27? Exact copies with colors fitting the purple/grey of your layout are probably the best.

6.AFTER you send a new version incorportating these changes, I will send you a file that give the EXACT information (the text, and the corresponding links) that I want to have on the landing page and the interior page. I would then ask you to incorporate this in your design.
7. My developer might have some additional input for you.

I hope that works for you. If you agree to doing 1 - 7, we declare you the project winner. It would be nice if you incorporate 1-5 as soon as possible, the developers will need that soon.
