Hello Everyone,
Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Name or initials: Deon Brugmann

What type of product or service do you offer?
My client is a master craftsman who creates fine interior pieces and custom built-ins that is more of an art than a product.

How long have you been in business?
several years

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
My client wants to create a signature brand, and wants to physically brand his logo into each wood piece. His goal is to become increasingly more exclusive, and discriminating in the projects he chooses. This logo burned into each piece will indicate that it is a unique, custom piece from Deon Brugmann.

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
July 17, 2007

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
His clients are typically wealthy, prominent individuals, who desire his work in their fine homes.

Who would you like to add to your audience?
His work is currently very localized, and this logo in addition to a website will draw interest from other localities, which match the demographic of his current customer.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
This logo represents his signature, and can either be his name if done well, or his initials "DB". Clean lines, simple, contemporary

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?) no, but must look good in monotone as well.

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo? no

Communication Strategy:
What is your tagline or slogan? none
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?

Where will your new logo be used?
On wood pieces, website, business cards

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
exclusive

Attached are examples of his work.

Hello - here is a logo from me, partially inspired by Deon Brugmann's beautiful coffee table. Thanks! :)

Thank you all for your submissions! I've discussed your designs with Deon and with several other people to get a broad consensus, and here is their feedback:

Pracus - Your design was very well received! Great job! "Classy", "looks like Rodeo Drive", "I Love it!" were a few of the responses I got from nearly everyone who saw it. After discussing any possible changes to it, the only thing that we came up with is maybe changing the magenta color to match an actual wood stain color such as mahogany.

RelevantStudio - This is a great design, but not right for this contest. The rough lines look really cool, and it would probably be perfect for a jeans company. However, as a physical brand for wood, it would be difficult to recreate, and doesn't seem to match the smooth solid nature of wood.

NHR - My client didn't like this design. Sorry.

Kekepania - Deon and I both liked this design, and it was initially our favorite choice. But, everyone else we showed it to disagreed with us, unfortunately. I think that the work you've done with the circle is very original and good, and I would suggest keeping that. For the remainder of the design, I don't know what to suggest, except maybe to try a few more concepts.

Thank you all for your effort. If you need anything else from me to help you better identify with the brand concept, please don't hesitate to ask!

Hello Designers,

I would like to extend this contest through Aug 3, in an effort to increase participation. I know that many are on vacation at this time, and will be returning shortly.

After discussing this contest with the staff at Design Outpost, I would like to offer the following suggestions to give direction. Also, please note that the client is the one making the ultimate decisions about the logo, and that the feedback offered by others is just taken into consideration.

The primary purpose of this logo is to create a physical mark in to the wood of the pieces that Deon creates. As such, it must be something that can be recreated in metal. It needs to have smooth lines.

The design should be should consist of a graphic that can stand on its own, and create a strong image that is easily identifiable. Because Deon's own reputation is being marketed along with the finished product, The graphic should be or contain his initials. Adding the full text of his name is also of value, but not required. This may be used outside of his work on his website or stationery.

Deon favors contemporary art, and his web contest will probably reflect this. A logo that fits well in this setting will probably do very well.

Deon is pretty open minded about the end result, but would like to see a variety of choices to help him summarize everything about his work and identify himself in a mark (your logo)! No small task, and I really appreciate the work that you do! :D

Thank you everyone for your submissions. :D Now that this project has momentum, and there are many different designs, it is much simpler to narrow in on Deon’s preferences. In general, he prefers to see something that is solid and filled in, and uses his initials in lower case format.

Kekepania – Ver 2 – Deon really likes this design! Please change the letters within the circle to lower case. Also, can you make the full name outside of the circle feel more connected to the graphic? Not sure how that will work out, but there doesn’t seem to be a strong enough relationship between the two.

Dewa Jaya – Ver 1 – This is a great concept with the letters. Can you try a variation of this shape with maybe thicker lines and different curves. Also, maybe something filled in.

Dewa Jaya – Ver 2 – Don’t prefer this design as much as the first, except that it has a more solid feel to it. So, the type of design is close, but the actual concept doesn’t work.

DJaka – Ver 1 – The chisel and lower case letters are good, but can you play with the design a bit to make it feel more solid?

Pracus – Ver 2 – This might go somewhere, but it needs thicker lines and less curl.

Dewa Jaya – Ver 3 – The solid crest background has a lot of potential in this design. The web 2.0 /gloss finish isn’t right though. The flatter versions are better. The lower case letters are really good. Please create some variations to the outer crest shape. The inverted color pattern in a great idea, and would look good pressed into wood. Very bold.

J Johnson – I don’t have feedback from Deon on this one yet, but based on his assessment of the other logos, I think that is a good design. It probably would be favored more if there were solid elements to it.

Thank you all for your submissions. Many of these would make great identities! Given this, it requires some refinement to help nail down the one closest to the spirit of Deon’s company. Thank you all for your revisions, and we look forward to your next submissions. Only a couple of days left, so please submit your responses soon, and we will respond immediately to individual designs.

Thanks much for all the feedback. And I'm very happy that Deon likes this version. :D Here's a variation with lowercase initials and an additional circle to help bring the initials and full name together. I look forward to more feedback. Thanks again!

Thank you all for the wealth of submissions! There are so many great ones to choose from now, it is becoming increasingly difficult to decide! That is a good thing of course, so thank you. :D

Logoholik - Version 1 Wonderful design, one of the top choices so far. Deon likes this flat design more than the arched version 2 design. He also likes the subtle overlap that the circle has above the stripes. Don't change a thing. :P

Kekepania 3 & 4: It is very creative the way you have bridged the two concepts, but it has made this design too busy.
Deon still loves the circle, so please try a different technique.

NHR version 2: This is a really cool design! Deon likes this much more than the first. When looking at the black version however, it become difficult to read. Maybe if you combined version 2 & 3. Take the shell from the first without the additional lines from 3, and fill it in with the lowercase d&b with the solid background.

Dewa Jaya, djaka, pracus - Deon is moving away from these choices, sorry.

elogonics both versions of your design are really good. Deon prefers the square one. do you think that you could put Deon's first name up the left side as if it where a "square"...I think this would be a great look.

nvoke - ver 1. Awesome submission! thanks. This is also very good. Could you please use fewer white dots so that they are more visible when seen in black and white in a smaller entry. Also, please put a little more padding around the letter. In a separate version, could you also submit this same design as a rectangle or square. Thanks

LutFi - Both are great submissions...you guys are making this hard to choose :D Can you fill in some element of this design?

Rongen: Another favorite of Deon :) No changes to recommend at this time, except to maybe see in a couple other colors.

We will try to wrap this up today, and we thank you for your hard work. Because of the amount of last minute submissions, we may request a couple more changes over the weekend, and hope to have a decision by monday. Thank you all!

elogonics - sorry for the confusion, here is the layout I was referring to:

N XXXX
O XXXX
E XXXX
D XXXX
  BRUGMANN

OR

D XXXX
E XXXX
O XXXX
N XXXX
  BRUGMANN

I was referring to a carpenters square, that looks like an "L". I realized later that I wasn't being clear about that and sure enough, you didn't understand what I meant :D

Rongen - thank you for the color submissions.

Thank you everyone for so many great choices to work with!

Deon has chosen Logoholik Version1 for his company logo. This graphic brings out exactly the imagery that he is looking for. So thank you Logoholik! There were many other excellent designs, so we really appreciate your efforts.

Logoholik, Deon likes this graphic exaclty as it is, but would also like a version of it that maybe has a 3D aspect to it, for use on the upcoming website contest. Maybe with reflection or raised lettering. Please also provide a gray scale version, since there are multiple colors.

Thank you again, and I look forward to working with you all in about a week on the website design!
