Company Details

I am setting up a new shopping cart website for Nostalgia Woodworking. I can slice and dice a PSD file, but I want you to come up with the look and feel of the site. NW sells wood furniture, which is pretty boring, but they are trying to ramp up their image and start to promote their brand. The artwork I am looking for will look like a shopping cart product page. I need a clear header with navigation links, a product image thumbnail, with discriptive text beside (lorem ipsum is fine). and a side (right or left or both) nav bar(s). The shopping cart software is x-cart, and you can see some of their live sites here for more ideas. (http://www.x-cart.com/featured_clients.html). X-cart uses a smarty tempate engine and so everything is very modular (keep that in mind). If you have any questions for clarification please ask.

1a) Name of Company
Nostalgia woodworking

1b)Company Tag Line or slogan:
Quality Furniture For Life

1c) Do you have a company logo?
Just completed - see attached

1d) Do you have a corporate visual identity (a customized (non stock) logo and color scheme carried out throughout your office, stationery, business cards, etc.)?
Nope.

1e) What is the nature of your business?: Briefly describe your products or services:
Solid wood furntiture and fixtures

1f) Who is your target market? Who are you hoping to reach with your site?
They only wholesale their products, so the target is mostly resellers but the hope is that some end-users will see their site and go looking for the products from the retailers.

Website Details

1b) Do you have an existing website? If so, what is the URL?
http://www.nostalgiawoodworking.com/

2b) IMPORTANT: Please list at least 3 URLs (web addresses) of high quality sites that you like the look of (these do not have to be sites who’s business is similar to yours. It aids us in determining what your design style is.) Please consider layout, colors, navigation, graphics, and typography.
Not much here and definately nothing from competitors...
http://americanapparel.net/
http://www.nwa.com/

3b) What colors or color schemes would you like?
hmmmm... earth tones. Colours that will make images of wood furniture seem alive. You pick.

4b) List the Navigation links for your Site:
This will be cut up into a template for an x-cart shopping cart. where the retailers can place online orders. Just put in lorem ipsum for the nav.

5b) What type of look are you trying to achieve? (e.g. clean, high-tech, conservative, warm, flashy, etc.)
Professional and efficient. We want to be able to display products, but make it extremely apparent where to click next to place an online order.

6b) Please provide the addresses of competitors' sites, if possible:
nada

7b) Do you have any images for use in the design of your site? If not, do you have images, can you offer suggestions of what you type of imagery you feel would be most suitable for your website:

I'll post a zip file in the next message with product images

Deadlines and Deliverables

1c) What is the deadline for your template design?
July 10th (give or take)

2c) Will you require HTML coding? (Yes/No)
No

3c) If so, will you require it to be ONLY CSS layout? (Yes/No --- {fees}) No

4c) How many pages coded will you require delivered? ({fees})
0 (zero)

ah sorry the prize is $350, which I failed to put in the title. It will probably be added to the title when they put the admin code in.

Hi Pyro,

Does your client have any images of their furniture set up in a room by any chance?

Thanks

Zoe

Hi Zoe... good to hear from you.

No. I have lots of pics of products on fairly neutral backgrounds, but nothing in an actual dimension-able space. If you look at their existing website, most of their products are accent pieces rather than focal-point furniture, but it would still be nice to see it in a more "real world" setting.

Zoe

maybe you could make the suggestion? All it would take is to place a couple of pieces beside a couch or in a hallway with some flowers and a book or two and you have a nice photo. :)

Meanwhile I will see what I can find in the stock world.

@all - Please note my comment to Zoe #1

@Fabian - I am looking forward to your submission.

@Zoe - Your submission was well received by my client. Their feedback is: 1)Replace the table in the layout with the bench attached as they no longer make the table pictured there. 2)they would like a Category title above the products menu... I'm thinking something that says "Category" :) 3) move the search box below the Category menu. 4) Spread the top Nav out across the top so the width is 100%.

@clink - your template is nice and clean and makes the logo look good. There is maybe not enough use of images. I would make the fonts on the left nav a bit bigger. The text that you are using in the header is saying "BIG SALE" which is aimed at online retail sales, where this site is aimed at wholesalers, doing the mundane task of buying their inventory, and as a side benefit showing a catalog to end-users. From a marketing view, we want the retailers to say "BIG SALE", we only want to say "quality".

@zoe - also, could you move the wholesalers log in, below the category menu, and above the search area. the client also asked if they could put a banner on the home page... I'm thinking maybe turn one of the blocks of text in the center graphic into a 468x60 banner area. I'll worry about making a banner look good in there, you can just fill it with decent background so it looks good if no banner is present. Actually I just placed a banner above the section that says "combining the finest..." and a banner over the top of that, looks fine, so just keep that in mind with revisions.

@all - client just gave me a website of a reseller, if you want to see another website that they like: http://www.oaksmithinteriors.com/

@all - Our Client has elected to go with Zoe's design (Message #19). Thank you all for your submissions.

@Zoe, there will be some changes to the design in the revisions forum.

Cheers,

FEEDBACK - I would just like to offer some feedback from this experience. My business does web design and web management and I target non-technical business clients. Most of my clients do not know enough to destinguish between design elements and content. In my original post I asked for "lorem ipsum" for content and menu items. Having the actual content in the templates is a very nice touch, but was very confusing for this particular client. All-in-All though, I love working with Design Outpost!!!

Zoe

Thanks Pyro. :)

That is great feedback for us here at Design Outpost. We have some very talented designers here and we all push each other to come up with new ideas. It is wonderful to hear feedback like yours.

I have moved this thread to the revisions forum where we can continue to work on the design together. Once we finalise the design I will send you the files. Please post back here once you receive them.

I look forward to working with you.

Thanks

Zoe

Zoe - The requested revisions are:

- move the logo bar to the top and the nav down to be tabs similar to message #21.

- if and when they need a banner, we are going to put it below the bench section, and above the welcome text, so if you want to throw a sample banner in their to get the final approval, that would be great.

- As I mentioned, the client has issues with seporating content and design and really want to see six categories both in the "Categories" menu and the central body (where you currently have 3 images) and those categories would be: Bench, Table, Mirror, Shelf, Rack, and Accessories. I don't think he is going to give the final approval until he has this - sorry :)

- add an icon to the search field - along the lines of what is in message #21.

- Maybe see a few different options for the font in "Quality Furniture For Life"

thanks for your help.

Zoe

Thanks. I will make a start.

In the meantime, could you please ask them to select six images from their site that they would like to be used for the categories on the home page?

Do they wish to use the image I have selected next to the logo at the top or do they have an image they would like to replace that with?

Thanks

Zoe

Zoe - Client Loves It!!!

Change nothing, slice away and send the PSD. If you could organize it the same way you did the other site you did for me (with the layers in folders), that would be great.

Thanks for the great work.
