Company Details

1a) Name of Company: Billy McNabb, Attorney at Law
1b)Company Tag Line or slogan: We do not have a slogan currently, but it would be nice to have a place in the design to add one at a later date.

1c) Do you have a company logo? The logo is not completed yet, but it will be a sketch of the exterior of our office building.

1d) Do you have a corporate visual identity (a customized (non stock) logo and color scheme carried out throughout your office, stationery, business cards, etc.)? No

1e) What is the nature of your business?: Briefly describe your products or services: Criminal Defense Attorney in San Marcos, Texas - Mr. McNabb has been defending individuals for the past 12 years.

1f) Who is your target market? Who are you hoping to reach with your site?
Our clientele is mainly college students and recent college graduates.

Website Details

1b) Do you have an existing website? If so, what is the URL? No

2b) IMPORTANT: Please list at least 3 URLs (web addresses) of high quality sites that you like the look of (these do not have to be sites who’s business is similar to yours. It aids us in determining what your design style is.) Please consider layout, colors, navigation, graphics, and typography.
www.amazon.com I really like the breadcrumbs on this site and that each page is labeled so you know what you are looking at
www.jetblue.com Simply site. I like that it is not wordy and it loads quickly.
http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showpost.php?p=235088&postcount=10 This has a nice banner and a clean appearance.
http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showpost.php?p=277581&postcount=7 This is probably the best site design I have seen recently. I like the simplicity of the banner, and I really like the tabs.

3b) What colors or color schemes would you like? I would like to use maroon and gold as they are the school colors for the local university. P130 Gold #F1AB00 & P504 Maroon #4E2029

4b) List the Navigation links for your Site:

About Us
DWI (I would like this tab to be accentuated)
Warrants
Arrests/Bonds
Contact Us
Services
Confidentiality

5b) What type of look are you trying to achieve? (e.g. clean, high-tech, conservative, warm, flashy, etc.)
Clean, Professional, and Warm. Many of our clients are young students, arrested for DWI having never been in trouble before. They are away from home for the first time and the experience can be very intimidating. Our site should put them at ease.

6b) Please provide the addresses of competitors' sites, if possible:
http://www.sergilaw.com
http://www.sanmarcos-dwilawyer.com
http://wenklaw.com
http://scotcourtney.com
http://www.attorneygibson.com
http://www.austin-tx-dwi.com
http://www.hayscountydwi.com
http://www.scharmendwilaw.com
http://www.eraygreen.com/location

7b) Do you have any images for use in the design of your site? If not, do you have images, can you offer suggestions of what you type of imagery you feel would be most suitable for your website:

I would like to avoid any negative images, such as jail scenes, handcuffs, and prisoners. The State flag and the State seal look good, but they seem to be used frequently, so we are open to other ideas.

Deadlines and Deliverables

1c) What is the deadline for your template design? August 3, 2007

2c) Will you require HTML coding? (Yes/No) Yes

3c) If so, will you require it to be ONLY CSS layout? (Yes/No --- {fees}) No

4c) How many pages coded will you require delivered? ({fees})

Are there any other comments/specific ideas we should keep in mind while designing your project?
All pages in the website need to be quick loading.
I would like a map to our office on each page and Visa/MC/Discovery/Amex logos on the page.
I would like every page to have a title that is in the same location on the page and is prominent.
Thank you so much!

Hello AMarchut,

Are you looking for 1 page to be coded and supplied for you to insert the rest of the pages, or are you after a total of 6 pages for each page?

Thank you

Zoe

Zoe,

I think I want 3 pages: the home page, an informational page which I can reuse for about us, DWI, etc., and a contact us page with a contact form.

I am not even certain that the home page and the informational page needs to be different, but it seems like they probably do, as the informational pages will be very specific.

Thanks!

Hi Amy,

Do you require a functioning contact form on the contact page, or just a design and you will have a programmer make it work?

Not all designers here will be able to assist with a functioning contact form as this is usually taken on by a programmer. I just want to clarify the required files so that the designers will understand what is required.

Thank you

Zoe

Good morning Zoe,

If it is possible to have a functioning contact form, great. If not, no problem; I can always have a programmer work on that later. I hope this helps.

Thanks!

Maybe the page could be laid out with a map, directions and contact information, with the contact form in a place where it could be left out until a programmer works on it, without it appearing as thought there is a hole in the page. I am open to other ideas as well.

Zoe,

Overall I like your design. I am still on the fence with having photos in the banner. I think I would like to have the address and contact telephone number (with the number more prominent) on the top right corner of the page with a link labeled map (or something similar) to that would take the user to the contact page where the map would be located. I don't think I want a map on every page after all. If possible, I would also like to move the credit card info up just a bit so that it is above the fold.

I anticipate that our logo will be have more height than length, so I wonder if we could move the tabs to the right to allow room for a taller logo.

I would like to see a more pronounced frame around the current tab and page.

Thank you!

Zoe,

I really like the upper right hand corner with the telephone number and the links. I like how it is accented with the gold; however, I would prefer it to just have the map link. I think I will be changing the tab titles (about us - will change to home and services will change to about us). This change may help users with navigation.

I liked the appearance of the tabs on the 1st design better as the color change of the tab enforced which tab was selected. I am interested to see if the tabs could be the solid (no gradient) maroon with white lettering when unselected, and then when a tab is selected the tab could be white with maroon lettering with a distinctive maroon border around the tab and page. I am not opposed to the gradient, it just appears rather violet to me. I am assuming this is a natural result of adding transparency to create the gradient. I am not sure if there is an easy way to a more maroon gradient.

Zoe,

I am not sure if I am giving too much or too little feedback, as I am very new at this. If you are wanting/needing different information, please let me know.

If it is possible, I would like to see template #1 with the following changes:

the tabs moved to accommodate a taller logo (like the other templates)

the phone number and map/directions link in the upper right corner (like template #4)

the credit card info place in the banner (like template #4)

the contact information centered and placed at the bottom of the page (like template #4)

the changes in the tab titles (like template #3 and #4)

add a thicker maroon border around the selected tab (3-5 pixels?), and have this border continue around the content associated with the tab, instead of the maroon columns to the left and right of the body of the page in templates 2-4.

I like the changes you have made to all of the templates but I am still leaning toward template #1. Thank you so much for all your work on this project!

Zoe,

They both look great! I prefer layout5-photo, but I would like to remove the "contact details" from the bottom of the page and simply list the address below the telephone number (it does not have to be near as large as the telephone number). I would like to keep everything on the homepage above the fold at 1024 x 768. The other pages do not have to be entirely above the fold. Thank you!

Hello Amy,

Here are the revisions.

Do you have any thoughts on the photos I have selected or any ideas of what type of photos you would like used in this area?

If you intended using the photos across the site, we could have a different set of photos for each page.

Thank you

Luc,

The banner looks really good. I did not think I would like the scales of justice on the page because they seem to be overused, but you did a very nice job incorporating them. I like that you have the telephone number in the top right corner and have incorporated the contact information prominently on the page. I would like the user to know where they are in the site (i.e. the active tab may need to display in a different color, breadcrumbs, etc.) Also, it is not immediately obvious to me if the information in the "heading title" boxes contain links or just text. Can you adjust it so that the user knows that they are links? Also, is the box containing Mr. McNabb's name a placeholder for a logo? If so, I would like to have his name to the right of the box.

Thanks!

Zoe,

I really like the photo on the far left. I like that the subjects are college aged and are conveniently wearing the local school's color. I don't know how the stock photos work. Would we also need to purchase the right to use the photo? I like that you have not pigeon holed us as just representing college students, so I would like to carry that theme throughout the website. I was thinking about possibly adding a photo (possibly a panoramic) or photos of our city to replace the other three photos. I don't know yet if I would like the pictures to change with the pages or not.

I hope this helps. Thanks!

I'm glad you like it. Yes the box in the top left is the placeholder for the logo. Do you have any particular info in mind that you want to appear on the homepage, aside from the welcome or intro text and the contact information we currently have on the right? Services or current news maybe..please advice. Also what would you want to place on the 3 boxes?

Thanks!

Luc,

I have been thinking about changing the last tab from "Confidentiality" to "Expunctions". As for the three boxes I was planning to title them (from left to right) Confidentiality, DWI (driving while intoxicated) and Expunctions. As for the home page I was thinking I would discuss services offered by our office. I don't know if we would need a picture on the homepage or not. It is a good place for a picture of Mr. McNabb, but I am not sure that is necessary.

Thanks.

Hi Brian,

Thank you for your submission. The placement of the contact information and credit card information look great.

My biggest concern about the template is the main body of the page. My goal is to give the user a level of confidence that we can help them with their legal situation so that they contact us. I want the website to be simplistic for the users without overwhelming them with information, thus I am not planning to have a tremendous amount of text for the user to decipher. As such, I think that the template works better broken up into segments. It does not necessarily have to have three boxes as some of the other designers have presented. I am open to other ideas.

I hope this helps. Thanks.

Hi Anne,

Thank you for the submission. I like your use of color. Furthermore, I like that you made it obvious which tab was selected, not only by changing the color of the tab, but also by labeling the page. I would like to keep the address and the phone number together the top right corner. It looks as though it would be possible to tighten the page to keep all the information above the fold. I appreciate that you took the time to look up our address and fax number (phone number is 512-353-2136). It caught me by surprise.

What were your plans for adding a logo later date?

Hi Amy,
This is my intended sub-page design. I am not sure if you will show the lawyer's photo or not. Alternatively we can show pictures of the office as well.

The lower bar with the other bits of info and location map will appear on every page as a footer navigation, for clearer and easier navigation purposes, as well as to highlight more important information to the users in case if they don't click on other tabs.

Excellent layout. I like that the location map will appear every page. I am not sure about the office or attorney's picture. I will have to give that some thought. I think you have set a mood/tone with the homepage that is comforting, and I don't know if an additional picture might be distracting.
Thank you!

If you don't mind, I would like to see this design (doesn't matter which photo you use) with a few changes. I like your banner (grey with maroon border) in message #52.

I like the way you have incorporated the tabs into the body of the page in this design, but I was thinking with the grey banner the inactive tabs could be the maroon color and the active tab could be the gold color.

Also, I would like to keep the attorney's name the size you have it in this design.

Hi Winnie,

I really like your design because it is so soothing, but I would also like to convey that the attorney is aggressive. Billy is a trial attorney and fights for his clients. I would like the website to reflect that he is very driven and they should feel comfortable and secure in their decision to work with him. I was thinking about changing the photo on the home page to one similar to the photo at www.gregwestfall.com, but my concern is trying to schedule a photo shoot around the court's schedule and the attorney's schedule. I like the photo on the homepage of www.gregwestfall.com because it is more upbeat than the doom and gloom photos of jails, handcuffs, etc. I am open to any ideas you may have, and I am hesitant to provide too many parameters as I don't want to limit your creativity.
I do like the layout of the pages and would like to stay with that format. If you have any questions or if I can provide any additional information, please let me know.

Hi Amy,
I understand your concerns.

I'll just like to point out, that if potential clients are surfing on the web looking for a lawyer, they would want to see something they can identify with. There is a need to have an USP (unique selling point), or to have something that will convince them to at the very least, contact Mr McNabb to find out more.

Having a photo like gregwestfall, it *may* backfire because, what is it about that photo that will set that particular lawyer apart from the many other lawyers? There are also many other lawyer sites with similar looking photos, these potential clients may have been surfing onto multiple sites and they might not feel that such a photo is unique.

I would suggest that the main photo should be subtle in communicating the message across, yet impactful subconsciously. That was the original reason behind my choice of photo, if I were to be charged for drink driving, I would be feeling very anxious, and I will want to be like that boy in the picture, lying on the car hood, looking at the blue sky in peace.

What I think that may reflect Mr McNabb's drive and professionalism; perhaps we can add a shot of him outside the court looking confident and portraying a certain sense of drive, in the section below the main picture, under the "about" header, and then coupled with an emphasized personal quote from Mr McNabb, on how he fights for his client's freedom.

The main picture is to attract, the emphasized content is to anchor, and the rest of the site should be informational.

Let me know what do you think. :)

If you still would prefer a more straightforward approach like gregwestfall, I will do my best to assist you. :)

Winnie,

I agree that the courthouse photographs have been overused; however, since most of the attorneys are using those images, there is certain pressure not to stray from them. I am okay with selling my boss on the non-traditional image, because it is one of the things with your design that got my attention, and I would like to set our website apart from the others. This being said, I would like to review some other image options so that I can explain that I have reviewed our options and I have chosen the best image for our website. As such, can you point me in the direction of a stock photo website that you like, or possible upload some photos?

I appreciate your time and feedback. :)

Hi Amy,
I understand that you will need to show alternatives. :) I will perform an image search for you and upload some.

If you would like to take a look yourself, these are a couple I use:
1. www.inmagine.com (okay pricing for web-res, wide variety)
2. www.istockphoto.com (everyone's favourite since it's really low-priced, but may not have nice shots)
3. www.getty.com (industry standard, but can be expensive)

I'll get back to you with the photos in a while. =)

Hi Amy,
these are the photos that I've managed to find. Pictures of lawyers in the courtroom itself are quite rare, think there are restrictions on phototaking within the courtroom.

Let me know if you want a couple of them to be integrated in the template to see how it looks.

Thanks,
Winnie :)

Winnie,

I am new to working with a website so I have a few questions. After the template is finished, will it be difficult to edit the tabs or even change the size of the tabs if necessary to accommadate the text?

I have been looking through the stock photos and I have not really seen anything that catches my eye. If we do decide to have a photo shoot later, will it be difficult to change the photo(s)?

Thank you for the links to stock photos.

Hi Amy,
You're welcome. :) I'm sorry that you didn't manage to find something that catches your eye, I guess a shoot is the way to go if you want something really unique and impactful.

For the template tabs, there's two options:
1. Nice fonts like what it is now, but it's imaged-based, if you need to edit the text, it will have to be done in photoshop.

2. Editable text, but generic html fonts, will not look smooth on the pc, they will be something like the body text of the template now. Mac renders html text quite nicely.

For both options, it's possible to make the tabs auto-expanding, just that I will need at least two days to code the template, because it will be more complex.

For the main photo, because of the faded effect of the left edge of the picture, it will have to be changed in photoshop, but it will be simple for anybody who works with photoshop. You can always contact me to do the swop for you, when you eventually get the ideal photo. It's no problem, really.

For the rest of the photos, it will be just simply replacing the old files.

Let me know if you need clarifications or if you have anything to ask me. :)

Winnie,

I would like to reduce the number of tabs to make the site simpler.

The tabs from left to right should be as follows:
Home
Criminal Defense
Warrants/Arrests
DWI
Expunction
About Us

Rather that accentuate the DWI tab as I originally requested, I would like to make all the inactive tabs the darker gold color. Also, it appears as though the text in the first two tabs is a different color than in the remaining tabs, I would like them to be consistent.

As you already have the telephone number on the home and sub page, please correct the telephone number to 512-353-2136.

Also, please change the name in the copyright information to Billy McNabb (it is currently Mcnabb).

On the sub page, I would like to replace the photo with a quote.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

I would appreciate your creative take on how best to incorporate the quote. I have played around with fonts and I like Monotype Corsiva (or something similar) for the quote itself and font similar to the fonts in your design for the author's name, but I am open to your thoughts.

I would like to incorporate the contact us link into the About Us page where you currently have the DWI information. I originally thought I would like a contact form for the viewer to complete, but it looks like it would be easier to just have an email address link.

Our contact information is as follows:

Billy McNabb
Attorney at Law
144 E. San Antonio Street
San Marcos, TX 78666
Telephone (512) 353-2136
Fax (512) 353-2137
info@billymcnabb.com

If you have any questions or need more information, please let me know. Thank you so much!

Hi Amy,
here's the changes you've requested. :)

Please do let me know if I've missed out on anything.

I need to know, when the template is ready to be coded, to code in css or traditional html (table based). Table-based html layout is phasing out. Here's a link (http://www.hotdesign.com/seybold/) for more information.

The only short-coming about css-based coding is that one needs to be comfortable in editing in html code to change information. (More like replacing text or changing file names)

Let me know. :)

Winnie these look really good. I have a few changes I would like to make.

I would like the quotation marks on the subpage quote to match the quote text color.

As I am not going to have a contact form, I would like to incorporate the address under the map on the home and subpages. I realize it will be redundant on the about us page, but that is okay with me. I would like the "click here for full contact details" to be removed from below the map on the about us page as the link would just direct the viewer back to the same page. I don't know if this is a coding issue or if I just need to remove it when I add my text.

Lastly, if it is not too much trouble, I would like the "How We Can Help" segment to be the far left segment, as that would place the contact info next to the map on the about us page. I would like it moved on the home page as well for consistency. Thank you so much for your help!

Winnie,

Is it possible to keep the golden box/segment with the Contact Info when you move the segments? Also, will I be able to remove the golden box as it will not be necessary for the other subpages, I will just want it on the About Us subpage? Would it be easier to have two seperate templates for the subpages?

Also, would it be possible to make the telephone number in the upper right hand portion of the pages more prominent?

Thanks again.

Nevermind about changing the color of the quotations. The more I look at the page the more I like it. The contrast in colors really draws my attention to the quotation which I assume is why you did that in the first place. Thank you for being patient with me.

Hi Amy,
you're welcome, I would like you to be as happy about the design as possible. Happy clients make me happy. :)

I have incorporated the changes as requested, as well as designed another generic subpage template for the rest of the pages.

Since the 'about us' page is going to be a little unique, I've also made the contact details + map a little unique as well, thought it would be good for the about us page to have an enlarged version of the map.

Let me know if I've missed out anything. =)

Winnie,

The designs look great. I would like to study them some more before I respond further.

I work in a small office, so I have to wear a lot of hats, and legal defense can be a chaotic business anyway. I might go from 8 hours a day to work on a project to having no more than 5 minutes with little to no notice. As such, I apologize if my responses appear sporadic and brief or overwhelming.

I will respond as soon as I can. Thank you!

Hi Winnie,

Thank you for being so patient. I have a few changes before you code the site.

On the home and subpages (other than the "about us" page) below the map, please remove "Billy McNabb, Attorney at Law" and list the address on one line. I would like a Find out more>> link added below the address that will direct the user to the About Us page.

Also, I signed up for a Google Map API key and have listed the key and an example below. Google had sample code on thier website, but I was unable to get it to show in my message. The sample code is included in the instructions at http://www.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/

They also sent me a snippet of sample code, which I can email you.

It looks like I need to have a draggable marker for our location and the pan/zoom and map mode controls, as in the example below. I am not sure if this is stuff that you would handle or not. If you have other ideas for including an interactive map, please let me know.

Key: ABQIAAAAFRohj0FV6bz40iSVGvAe3BSRQ59sLy6sSr6E72LU3V zxBoZ13hT55ojEOWVEWeMV4wsTbGe7mSAuSA

Valid for http://www.billymcnabb.com/ and any subdirectory.

Example: http://www.wotton.org/map/storelocator.html

Hi Amy,
you're very welcome.

I've attached the changes for you, let me know if I didn't get it right.

For the google map, I don't recommend putting the pan/zoom controls in the page itself, I feel it will interfere in the design too much, how about leaving it as it is now, and when the user clicks on the map thumbnail, it will show a page with the enlarged map and other controls?

Am not sure if I can implement the map for you or not, seems a little complicated for a designer like me. I can try though. :)

Winnie,

These look awesome! I would ask that the quote appear on all of the subpages.

I wasn't sure if the map would be an issue that you would handle or if it would be an issue for the programmer.

I like your idea about the enlarged map when the user clicks on the map thumbnail. You know better than I -- is this something you want to code or not?

Hi Amy,
Two questions:
1. would you like the tabs to stay in the current manner or would you like editable tabs? (as explained in http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showpost.php?p=286904&postcount=82)

2. Would you be filling in the content on your own or will you be asking a programmer to do it? I would prefer to code in css (table-less) based layout (visit http://www.hotdesign.com/seybold/ for more info) as traditional table-based layout is phasing out. It's just that one needs to be comfortable in replacing text in html code to be able to fill in the content. Let me know which you prefer. :)

Thanks!

I apologise for the slight delay. Had some trouble getting the expanding tabs to work in both IE/firebox pc & mac, but they work fine now! *phew*

Here's the main page, http://clients.winnielim.com/mcnabb/

Winnie,

I checked the page from the office and from home and it looks like the bottom of the body is getting cut off by the footer.

For example, I only see about half the map and the last line of text in the middle box is "adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor", but the bottom of that text is cut off too.

I might be able to send you a screen capture, if that would help.

It's okay, I found out what was the bug, I forgot to test the site in IE7 while I was writing the last few lines of code. The site gets cut off in IE7 but not other browsers, but now it's fixed. :)

Winnie,

That all looks good now.

I just have one more request and I think that will be it. I think that I understand where some confusion has come from re: everything being above the fold.

If I view the page full-screen at 1024 x 768, sure enough, it's all there. If I view it with the default toolbars in Windows Vista, some of the bottom gets cut off.

If I scroll down to the bottom, the entire banner at the top just barely disappears, so whatever the height of the banner, that is what is being lost at the bottom.

If that's not as clear as I think it is, let me know and I will get you a screeen capture.

I'd like to move the "We accept Visa..." from the footer, to the area right below "find out more" under the map and then tweak the height, so that everything but the footer is above the fold based on a height of 768 minus whatever the banner height is.

Again, if I am making a simple change overly complicated, let me know and I will try again. I think what I am looking for is about 60 pixels less height between the body and the header.

wynlim
09-23-2007, 10:51 AM
Hi Amy,
You can load the URL again to see, I've managed to "tweak" it to make most of it visible above the fold, though I very much do not recommend it. The reason why the design looks good in the first place is because of the subtle use of space and type.

Secondly, recent research has shown that "the fold" is pretty much a myth, though important items like the header, nav and main banner should still be above the fold. It used to be big monitors are expensive and most people use 14" or 15" screens and that's why the fold was important. However the trend is changing, screen resolutions are more varied than how it used to be.

Thirdly, while we manage to squeeze the design *above* the fold for 1024x768 users, but as large monitors are getting really cheap these days, those users using a larger resolution will see a design being crammed into the top half of the screen. I use a 20 inch myself...and from what I know of the market, more people are buying large screens for media purposes/games etc, and with Dell offering such good deals all the time, the number of people using large screens will definitely go up.

If you realize, very little sites are being designed above the fold now.

I can go ahead with what you want, but I would not encourage it. :)

thanks, I've adjust the spacing some more so it no longer looks so crammed yet the footer is still partially visible, and when you scroll all the way down, the header is visible.
