Book Title: Off-Leash Dog Play: A Complete Training guide for Safety & Fun

Author: Robin Bennett, CPDT, and Susan Briggs

Book Size: 8.5 X 5.5 This is a physical book. Spine cover to be determined based on total number of pages.

The following acceptable applications can be used by our printer:
Quark 7.0, Freehand 11.0MX, Corel Draw 12.0, Illustrator CS 2, Pagemaker 7.0, Photoshop CS 2, InDesign CS 2,

Extend bleeds ¼” beyond cover trim. Save linked graphics as TIFF or EPS file in CMYK or spot color. Files that are set up as RGB must be converted to CMYK, possibly resulting in a color shift. Save scans/halftones at 300dpi. Save line art at 1200 dpi.

This book is a staff-training manual for those who work with off-leash groups of dogs in a dog park or dog daycare setting.

Front Cover should include title, authors’ names and at least one graphic of dogs (preferably multiple dogs) playing off leash

Back Cover should have room for some bullets about the book, a quote about the book, the ISBN and info about the authors (photo, 2-3 line bio). (See suggested text below). ISBN barcode will be provided in an EPS file. Target Audience: entrepreneurs in the pet service industry, dog daycare owners who are training staff

Colors: We don’t have a preference, but want something professional and eye catching.

Fonts: Adobe Type 1 fonts, bold, graphic, professional; clean, sleek, contemporary

Suggested Text: (back cover)

A one-stop reference and training manual.

Finally…a comprehensive guide for the pet professional working with off-leash playgroups. A great book for training staff on key aspects for safe dog management.

You will discover how to:
- Understand canine body language and the ever-changing dynamics that occur between dogs playing together
- Safely manage off-leash playgroups with the least amount of force
- Train your staff to effectively manage off-leash playgroups
- Identify dog play styles to create fun, interactive dog playgroups
- See early-warning signs of arousal and play escalations
- Minimize potential dangers and fights between dogs
- Support the emotional needs of puppies and dogs lacking self-confidence
- Correlate breed history and stages of development to off-leash playgroup management issues
- How to introduce dogs and determine if they are suitable playmates
- Lean when to allow a dog to attend an off-leash play session and when it may be unsafe to do so

QUOTE: At long last, a book that teaches you how to train others to do what great dog people already know how to do. This book puts into words the things everyone needs to know if you’re working off leash with a group of dogs.

Hello, This is cover book design version#1.

I do have some questions:
• will there be any publisher logo? (if yes, could you please provide us the EPS logo?)
• can we also get the final ISBN number?
• I don't know the exact total number pages and the cover thickness. (is it hard cover/soft cover?) could you please provide the spine size?

In this design, I put:
• fake ISBN number (just for sample)
• spine is about ± 1 inch.
• photo sample for author.

That's all.

Any comments will be appreciated. :)
Thank you.

That's a great start! I like the circle and the text around it. Like the back cover. I like that
the dogs are playing outside too. I don't particularly like the look of the dogs though. They are too unusual and cartoonish, but we also don't want a strict "purebred" look either.

I don't like the title font. It seems sort of unfinished. I'm
not sure why, but it just has the self-published look, which we don't want.

we like the color gradations but I'm not sure I like the yellow/orange tone.

As to your questions:
will there be any publisher logo? (if yes, could you please provide us the EPS logo?) - Yes. The logo is attached
• can we also get the final ISBN number? we will get the final ISBN, but probably not until the final edits because the exact number of pages is still TBD.
• I don't know the exact total number pages and the cover thickness. (is it hard cover/soft cover?) could you please provide the spine size? This is a soft cover, we anticipate about 192 pages, but it's still TBD so that will dictate spine size.

This is a great photo. I think overall, we're going to prefer photos to drawings. We would prefer multiple dogs on the cover, but this kind of eye catching photo is great. If we can't get multiple dogs on the cover, then we'd at least need some on the back.

we like the font alot. Not sure we're crazy about the green...but not sure what color we want either.

A few additional comments....The C&R Logo can go on the spine if possible rather than on the back cover.

The title does not need to include the Colon marks.
After Susan Briggs names, we'll add the abbreviation CKO
Guide will be capitalized
Both of those things were my mistakes. oops!

i will upload author photos and bios shortly so you can use those as well.
THANKS

We like both the red and the blue colors. The photo is eye catching and simple. If we could get dogs playing with each other that might be another option.

We like the cresent portion on the back and the layout on the front. How would it look if you had the partial lab face (seen in bottom back of blue cover) at the top of the cover (instead of the grass and ball like on the red cover). hope that makes sense. Basically, just change the red cover to replace the grass and ball on the back with the lab face portion to see what that would look like.

Thanks to everyone who has submitted ideas. We're very impressed with everything. Some comments are below.

For bluecherry...we like the photo better than the graphics one, but it's not as eye catching of a photo. I'm not sure the colors are good either.

For martellostudio...the back photo is a big improvement. Those dogs look like they are having fun! We don't really like the green though.

FOr sglasglow - we like all the changes you made. The dog on the top of the back cover is nice and the extra dogs on the front is an improvement. The dobie looks a little serious but the other dogs seem happy. Can we see the sample in blue again and also move the author names to the bottom and push everything else on the front cover up a a bit.

The new cover is nice. Is it possible to have the lab replace the collie on the new cover? (The lab from the first cover and on the back?).

For all. I have attached copies of the autor bios and Robin's photo as well.

The lab photo shown in the first cover is a stock image that costs $355.00; I didn’t realize the price. The new current photos are free of charge because they are my own. I can take a photo of another lab if you prefer. :)

We are currently working on a couple ideas for the lab photo. I am also waiting for the photo of the second author. I hope to have both of those by the beginning of next week.

Other edits include the following:
Change the tag line to read "A complete staff training guide for safety and fun" (that may end up getting shortened depending on the way it looks).

Here's the cover with "staff" added in.
I made the lab a bit leaner too.

Hi Susan,
I'm so sorry it has taken so long to get back with you. We are still working out all the details on the cover. Here are some remaining edits:

On the spine, we're going to get rid of the tag line and make the title larger.

At the top left of the back cover, we'll include the category of Pets/Dogs

At the bottom left of the back cover, we'll add the website www.dreamdogproductions.com

I am still waiting for the second author photo, the ISBN and the spine width. However, we can't get those until we are sure of the page count. Is that a problem? I hope you won't mind becase we really love the cover.

As for the photos, we do like the new lab. We also had a couple other ideas to try, but only if you think you can do anything with any of these photos. Don't feel like you have to do a cover with each of them...only if you think any of them will work for the look we're trying to get. Let me know what you think. I have attached a few of the other photos.

Hi,

Yeah, no problem. I'll get the changes made there and try out the photos; very cute! :D I should have that by Wednesday.

Just let me know on the spine size once you have the page count determined. I understand that could take awhile. :)

Thank you,
Susan

This picture worked the best because of its scale and angle.
What do you think?

I wasn't sure on how to place the category Pets/Dogs. :)

Susan

Hi Susan
The category Pets/Dogs is perfect.

We’re almost ready to make this final. I should have the ISBN tomorrow and we need to finalize the quote.

Here are the other edits:
1) The subtitle of the book has changed to A Complete Guide to Safety and Fun
1) Delete "how to" in the second to last bullet on the back
3) Susan’s bio photo is attached
4) Can you underline the book title in Robin’s bio (All About Dog Daycare…A Blueprint For Success)
5) Page count is 160, Spine width will be .320
6) Can we try to enlarge the font a little on the spine and, if possible, turn the letters horizontal (so you can read the spine without turning your head…does that make sense)

Finally, can you let me know what you would like to have in the book for your cover credits (name, company, website, etc). Also, are there any photo credits for the dogs other than the lab? We will include those on the copyright page.

Also, we are planning to send a copy of the book to you along with several copies of the cover for your files Just let me know where to send those items once everything is ready.

THANKS

Final quote:
This should be the quote on the back of the cover:

For the printer:The following acceptable applications can be used by our printer:
Quark 7.0, Freehand 11.0MX, Corel Draw 12.0, Illustrator CS 2, Pagemaker 7.0, Photoshop CS 2, InDesign CS 2,
Extend bleeds ¼” beyond cover trim. Save linked graphics as TIFF or EPS file in CMYK or spot color. Files that are set up as RGB must be converted to CMYK, possibly resulting in a color shift. Save scans/halftones at 300dpi. Save line art at 1200 dpi.

We'll also need separate .jpg files in as high a resolution as possible of front only and back only to post the cover on amazon and other sites.

Let me know when you think it will be ready. The book is all set to go.

I had sent this to your private message as well, yesterday. The file is uploaded at the following link at about 100MB.

This includes the full cover (psd, jpeg), front cover image (psd, jpeg), back cover image (psd, jpeg), and fonts. All images are embeded as well as the main title font.

Thank you,

Thanks, Susan. I never did get that other email so thanks for putting it on the link. There were three tiny corrections to be made and then we'll be done!

1) in the quote, the word "reading" should be lower case
2) The Pets/Dogs (which I thought was ok) actually needs to be a little higher...near the top of the book
3) in SUsan's bio, change ....lead effort to "led efforts"

Thanks again for all your help. We will definetely recommend you to others. Let me know when the .pdf and .jpg files are up.

Thanks Susan. Were you able to move the Pets/Dogs up at all? Maybe it's as high as it can go, but I wasn't sure. If you can move it to the top edge of the book that would be great. Also, in 'led effort" it should have an "s"....so led efforts.

Everything else looks great. One question about the .jpg files though. I can't seem to copy them into any other document. They open and I can view them, but when I try to copy them into document they just turn black. Any way to fix that?

I have the Pets/Dogs up to the edge. it doesn't look that way on the files you are looking at because those files include bleed so there is that extra 1/4".

I am not sure what is going on with the jpegs. I tried them in Word, and they show up. What program are you putting them into?

Thanks,
Susan

robinbennett
09-14-2007, 03:43 AM
Thanks, Susan. Were you able to fix the word "effort" (to add an "s") so it says "efforts" in Susan's bio. That looks the same to me.

Thanks for letting me know about the category part...I forgot about the bleed!.

I was tring to import them into work and powerpoint but neither worked. I downloaded them from a mac. I don't know why that would matter. I'll try from a pc to see if that makes a difference.
Thanks

You're right; I needed to get that "s" in there on "effort".

It might be a Mac - PC thing. Yes, let me know.
