Thanks for starting us off Brian.
- You have the right idea with the layout, but while the design is clean I think it's a little too plain. For example the employee picture and the one under growth could be fancier. The build great products and wow the customer sections in the banner also look pretty plain.
- I like the blue you used but I'm not a big fan of the green/teal color...we've slowly been moving away from it. You could try something more cheerful like orange or red.
- The growth picture and description doesn't really look like it's a part of the puzzle pieces. It looks like it's part of the right hand menu.
Thanks.

And small modification
trevorh
08-16-2007, 09:27 AM
Aliska - I may not have been clear enough about the core values section. Refer to BrianDove and Fabian’s designs. The 3 core value pictures (Growth, Respect, and Fun and Play) should not all show at the same time. Instead they should appear as a link or puzzle piece, or some other cool design that when clicked on will then display a picture and section related that that link. One section will be displayed by default. Doing it this way I won’t have to create separate pages for each of the core values. Also, the banner should be collage style with our pictures, as the others have done.
Fabian – I’d like to see more color. I like the blue but I would also use a more cheerful color in there like orange or red. Think of your Facilities Manager template design The puzzle pieces look pretty plain. Any other ways of doing that section? You don't have to use puzzle pieces. The collage could use more color also – the Print Audit 5 box looks a little tacked on.
Thanks!

I'm going to try to find some sample collage style banners that I like.
trevorh
08-16-2007, 09:53 AM
Here are some sample banners I've found that I like the look of. Rather than trying to blend the pictures together as some of you have done, I think you can get a less cluttered look by using some kind of a square effect (not sure what the real word for this is) to do the different sections/pictures:

Offbeat, I like the brightness of it but I’d prefer that you used our blue more – the blue from the Print Audit 5 box. The blue should be the primary color but I definitely like the idea of using red or orange too. The collage might a bit too over the top. See my comments about the collages in my previous post.
Thanks.

Hey Trevor, here goes the work in progress. I'll have the polished up version by tomorrow morning. The printer could be done in flash, with the profile pictures printing ever 20 secs or so on. And the tiles in the main graphic could use some smooth flash effects too, but still tweaking their overall look. :) And the lil guy that left that's peeking could be drawn to look like the actual guy that left, just for fun. :D

Christian, did you mean to post a design? I don't see one.
trevorh
08-17-2007, 08:16 AM
Brian, I like the look of the puzzle pieces at the bottom. It would be nice if we could fit in the associated pictures as well though. The banner is looking better but it looks a little inconsistent. For example you have the pictures in the Have Fun section oversized and rotated but the ones in the other sections are straight and smaller. Your banner is wider than the sections below…I think the page would look better if the whole thing was the same width.
Fabian, better but the banner looks pretty crowded can you try to make it look cleaner? You don’t need the ribbon or the thumbs up in there. The notepad style you’re using for the testimonial section doesn’t really suite the rest of your design.
Offbeat, can you try to find a middle ground between the banners in #24 and #25. #24 might look too busy and #25 a bit too plain. The employee testimonials section can be smaller.
Thanks.
trevorh
08-17-2007, 08:35 AM
Fabian here's another banner idea for you: You could have our team photo with the toilet paper form most of the background of the banner and then have photos for the other sections on top of it. Kind of like you do in the Have Fun section and similar to the cbn-atl.org sample i posted above.

One suggestion for a very clean look to the header is to start in the large background image shown then slide or some fade-in the other pictures. The result could be some nice flash transitional effects.
This offers a clean solution for getting your message across as well as not blocking out any of your staffs smiling faces.
Imagine the outcry if Julie got a great big picture covering her face ;)

Here you go Trevor, just noticed the last one didn't upload. This is the next go, though still tweaking a bit!(and still working on "puzzle" graphic) Also, have some ideas for the banner, some with flash, some without like perhaps having each of the current panels holding each section with each slogan, or just switching tiles and slogans every few secs. And if you want to make it even flash'ier you can have the little guy I was talking about pop his head up once in a while above the corresponding text.

Ok, this is my concept. I tried the square collage idea that you suggested in several variations but found that it really didn't help your slogan to be readable so tried my own concept. It would still be very possible to impliment flash into the header and it has a kind of 'flashy' feel even when static in my opinion.
I tried to go with something very professional yet fun and welcoming. Feedback is greatly appreciated :)

General comments – A lot of you are making the picture and bullet points that are associated with the core values too small. Those bullet points will be comprised of 3 short sentences, so there has to be room for that.
BrianDove – So far I probably like yours the best. It could however be more cohesive for lack of a better word. I’d like the whole design to gel together better. For example the menu should be a part of the banner above rather than on its own. I know you did it to add a fun element, but I don’t think I like the look of having the employees testimonial section crooked. It looks out of place like that. See my general comments above about the puzzle pieces. You may have to reposition the picture and bullet points below the puzzle pieces to make more room.
Offbeat – I generally like your design but still not crazy about the banner – I just looks like there’s too much going on in it. Your testimonial section can be a lot smaller still.
Clink – Good start, the banner looks good -- I would however remove one of the pictures of the trophy and replace it with a customer quote. Rather than have a footer on top, then a space for our logo and then the banner, you may want to simplify things by putting the white version of our logo on the blue bar on top. The style (or maybe just the color) of the employee testimonial section looks a little out of place.
Christian – Looks pretty good but it’s too incomplete to judge. Can you use the blue from our brochures for the background/fonts? Also, our logo should be in color and you should be using the product pictures and trophies for the Build Great Products and Wow the Customer sections on banner. The Have Fun part looks good.
Fabian – I’d rather have all the elements in the banner. The other parts could be laid on top as squares or something. I would make the faces smaller to fit in more people. Perhaps part of the image could be faded to reduce the problem of putting squares over people’s faces. I don’t mind how you did the tabs for the core values, but the main page content looks a little plain. Any way to spruce it up? For example, adding borders around the pictures or using some other effects. The green you're using in the menu doesn’t suit the rest of the site.
I will try to narrow these down after the next round of entries.
Thanks.

Brian, you changed it too much :) I liked the first banner you made – although I do like the new shinier menu and the new employees section better, but preferred the longer, narrower style of the old testimonial section. The page looks a little squished now. Can you find a middle ground between the old design and the new, using the old banner instead?

Elena, it looks pretty nice but a little bit too crowded. Here are some suggestions:
- I think you could remove the orange balls (with the 1, 2, 3 on them) from the banner. I would also remove the employee picture and ‘Meet more employees’ box from the banner. The our team section should only have one person it, along with a quote. I’m not sure if I like the shade of green you’re using in the banner. Any other color ideas there?
Brian, that’s better. The logo looks a little out of place on top there. What if you used the white version of our logo and just put it on the blue ground above the ‘Wow the customer' part of the banner? I would try incorporating the Employee Testimonial section right into the page, rather than having it float on top. The employees quote should be more visible.
Thanks.

Brian, I also think it would look better if you used a single background color or gradient, instead of using 2 colors (blue and gray).

BrianDove, I think I preferred the puzzle pieces on the darker blue background. The logo might look better on the top right of the page. Can you do the headshots in a way that does not show so much of the background? I’d like it to be mainly just a headshot. The reason being because most of our employee pictures have multiple people in the background.
Elena, I don’t like having the entire background blue, so I prefer ‘print_audit_changes_5.jpg’. That one is a little plain however. Also, I like that banner better than the others. Anyway to add more color to that section but not have it entirely blue? If possible I would like to see puzzle pieces instead of the tree.
Clink, Christian and everyone else, are you working on revisions too? I am on vacation next week so I am going to have to extend the deadline until I get back on September 4. Elena, I like the overall layout but a couple things I don’t like are the ‘steel’ effect you use around various elements such as the banner. This is hard to describe but can you give the fonts and colors more of a business feel. For example the green/red fonts you use in the banner almost look like a Christmas theme. Can you give your puzzle pieces a less cartoony look, similar to how Brian has done them? Your puzzle pieces don't fit together very well :) Thanks.

Hey Trevor! Finally, here's the design I've been working on. I had to sort of start from scratch since I wasn't really loving my other design. Hope you like this one! :D Integrated the Testimonials Printer into the navigation bar. Instead of printing straight out, the page would print straight but then sort of fall and tilt a bit on the table, giving it this less stiff, more natural flow.

Christian, Brian, Elena – I think you all have most of the page looking pretty good. The part I’m still not satisfied is the puzzle pieces and accompanying picture/description. I think that the space you’re leaving for the bullet points is too small. The descriptions beside the pictures will actually consist of 3 short (I’d say at least 10 word) bullet points. Most of you are only pointing one short sentence. Can you all try rearranging that section to allow for more bullet points? You can use more space on the page.
Christian – Your design looks pretty sharp but your page is so short (the white section) that it looks like it’s cut off. See my comments above rearranging the puzzle pieces/pictures and making that section longer. The puzzle pieces might look better if they were different colors.
Brian – I liked how the puzzles looked on the blue background, what if you faded the main section from white to blue? That way the puzzles could be on a blue background but the section above could still be white and it would still look like one section. Your white section looks a little plain compared to how the others have done it. The logo on top of the banner still looks kind of out of place. There must be a better place to position that.
Elena – Better, but see my general comments above about the Core Value section. Also, is there a different color you can use instead of silver/steel effect you’re using around the banner, etc? I’m not crazy about the steel look I’d prefer if the Our Team section was made longer and skinnier, instead of being wide like that – see how the others have done it. The ‘Why has only one person’ section to the left of it could be made bigger.
Sorry for dragging this out so long. Hopefully I can pick a winner after this round.
Thanks.

Brian, It would better if you could fit the logo into that first orange box in the banner without making that section of the banner taller than the others.
Christian, better but can you make the picture beside Growth a little bigger. If need be you can make the puzzle pieces a bit smaller. Is there a different color you can use for the Respect piece? I’m not crazy about teal. Also, I would make the Our Core Values text all one color.

Christian, while I like the new hybrid design, you had to add extra paragraph text above the puzzle pieces to fill in space, so that probably won’t work. I don’t want to have that much text on the page. Can you go back to the design in #94 but remove party hat guy. Also can you change ‘Our Core Values’ to a different color, such as blue? You might also want to change Growth picture to the partying one you used in you first design and change that heading to Fun and Play. Keep the large employee testimonial quote and ‘meet more…’ button from the newest design.
After this I’ll put the designs to a vote here in our office.

Christian, the puzzle pieces should have a hover over effect, can you show me what that will look like? Thanks.
Congratulations Christian.
