Our company SyoSil needs a new logo. We have never had a logo designed before, so we are quite open minded towards new ideas. The company name is "SyoSil", which is short for "System on silicon", which relates to our expertise. We do functional verification of SoCs (System on Chip), or as you may call it "hardware chips". Our customers are mainly from the semiconductor industry. For this purpose, we use state-of-the-art methods, which not that many other companies utilize yet.
We have tried to fill the assesment out below. Our text is in navy blue.
Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
The company name: "SyoSil", spelled with two capital S'es. Furthermore, our tag line: "Systems on Silicon", if possible.
What type of product or service do you offer?
We do functional verification of SoCs. We offer consulting services in connection with the devleopment of new SoCs. We use state-of-the-art methods, which enables us to produce very high quality verification. Thus, our customers products improves in quality
How long have you been in business?
Since 2003
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
We would like to establish a know brand within the chip manufacturing industry. I new logo would help us in the right direction
What are your long term goals?
To define a firm and constant profile towards our current and future customers and to state that we are capable of using the newest methofds, know in the field of functional verification of SoCs
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
September 3rd, 2007
Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
Our costumers are mainly large companies within the semiconductor business. Examples could be Infineon (www.infineon.com), Nokia (www.nokia.com) etc.
Who would you like to add to your audience?
Other companies from the semiconductor industry
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
A simple one, with can be used on our webpage, business cards etc. Until now, we have had a logo, which was just made out of some text. We would like to have some kind of icon included in the logo.
We like the Doulos logo (Competitor: http://www.doulos.com) and the Infineon logo (NOT Competitor: http://www.infineon.com)
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
Not really. We only demand, that it is not too hard to reuse in black'n'white when printed etc.
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
It is not a must, but take a look at our webpage: http://www.syosil.com.
At the upper right corner, in the background behind the logo, you see a round shape, which looks like the glass spheres, which you hang on your X-Mas tree. In reality this is a "wafer", which is a "plate" on which the actual chips are manufactured. Such a thing could be cool to have incorporated as an icon, but it is rather hard to draw without too many colors.
Other obvious choices include something with a chip, a "bug" (In out business, an error free chips is quite hard to produce. Hence functional verification is very important. An error is usually called a "bug". This is also the case for e.g. software errors) or similar icon
Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
Reliability, Completeness, thoroughness, predictability, all of which are important for a bug free design and the fact that we use state-of-the-art methods to obtain very high quality
What is your tagline or slogan?
"Systems on Silicon" as stated above
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
We would like to state that very are extremely professional and realiable, which is a must in our business. SoCs with functional bugs are very expensive to correct, and hopefully more customers will look our way, if we have a very professional and reliable profile.
Where will your new logo be used?
Webpage, articles etc.
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
NoBug, Verilab and Doulos. They are all very simple. We like that.
List competitive URLs if possible
http://www.nobug.com
http://www.verilab.com
http://www.doulos.com
What sets you apart from your competitors?
They all have a broader product range. We are more focused on exactly functional verification of SoC and internal education of our customers employees. All of them also outnumbers us in headcount.
Furthermore, we use state-of-the-art methods as stated above.
Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Very high quality functional verification of SoCs though state-of-the-art methods

We have now looked all of your contributions over, and here are our comments.
Here are some real pictures of a waver for more inspiration:
http://images.google.dk/images?sourceid=navclient&hl=da&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4SKPB_daDK202DK203&q=wafer&oe=UTF-8&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi
In general, you have all picked up on the "Wafer" idea, which we really like. If some of you have could give the "No Bug"/"Chip" theme a go, that would be appreciated.
@Blesseville:
We like version 1.1 the most. We would like to get the "Wafer" and the text a little bit closer together, maybe even overlapping if possible. Furthmore, we would like to have the colors of the wafer enhanced in brightness a bit.
A version, were the text "System on Silicon" is split around the "y", so that the text perhaps spans the whole width of the complete logo. Either "Systems" or "Systems on" can be placed to the left side of the "y".
Furthermore, we would like to have the font used for the text "SyoSil" a bit thinner (less bold).
@Elogonics:
We like this logo and the colors, but we would like to see it changed a little bit.
1. The Orange s-like letter in the Sphere unfortunatly looks a bit like the S in "SS" from the Nazi regime, and we would very much like to keep a huge distance to such icons (We know that it is hard, since our prime letters are S and S in SyoSil). The coloring in the "icon" does not have to look like a S.
2. The "Wafer" icon looks like a Sphere. A Wafer is flat, so you must "flatten" the icon a bit.
3. We also would like to stick to san-serif font, and keep "yo" and "il" in small letters as well.
4. If you could try to make some versions, where you move the icon a bit around. Maybe place it to the right, and maybe overlapping the text (The icon is in the background), then we would appreciate it.
@Logoholik:
We like your twist with the colors, and that you have visualized that our name comes from the phrase: "Systems on Silicon". Having said that, we dislike the icon, since it looks like a solar system, which is quite far from our world. We like the fonts, but the logo looks a bit "cold" in our opinion.
@Pieter:
Sorry to say, but we don't like your contributions. With regards to version 1, we need something which has more edge. Your logo has too many round and soft parts. We like the idea, that you have integrated the "icon" into the "o", but we need the "o" to become very clear. Otherwise, our customers can't spell our name, when they only see our logo.
We have no comments, with regards to version 2, since we don't like it.
@NHR:
We like version 1.1 the most. We like your icon to the left, but we don't think it has anything to do with our business. We need something more wafer, chip or no bug like.
We like that you tried to put some perspective into the drawing, so keep that element.
We dislike the fonts, especially the "S"s, which are too symmetric.
@LutFi:
Sorry to say, but we dislike all of your contributions. A first we thought it was very cool, since it reminded us of our early days, when the Commodore 64 was "hot", since the font you used looks a bit like something coming from that computer. However, the text "SyoSil" in your contributions looks too rough and has too little granularity. The "wafer" in version looks like it has been bolted on afterwards, it needs to be more integreted into the whole logo.
In version 2 we like that you have mirrored the text to give the logo some depth.
Hope that you all will look at our feedback and come up with some new contributions.
Regards, Jacob

@Blesseville:
When aligning "System" on the left side of the "y", we meant it to expand beyond the first "S" in SyoSil, and then place the Wafer on top of "Systems". Can you try that?
With regards to your new contributions (version 3.0 and 4.0), we like that you have enhanced to colors, but we think it has had a negative impact on the wafer it self. the old one was looking better. In version 4.0 you have placed the wafer in a really good spot :-)
@Dewa Java:
We think this is too "Goa"-like for our taste :-)
@Djarka:
Your version 1.0 has been the subject of many discussions, since we think it is very original.
We would like to see this logo in another color scheme, than brown, since we think it is a bit dull. Furthermore, we would like to have the B/W version upgraded, since it simply doesn't work. For instance you could invert it or something similar.
@Elogonics:
The font in version 2.0 is better, but vi like your "style" in version 1.0 better. We dislike the "S" in the wafer in version 2.0. Maybe you could just "scatter" the orange dots randomly around the wafer?
@Unorthodox:
We really like your contributions. We think that version 3.0 is very good, since the "S" in the wafer has almost disappeared. However, can you try to do the following modifications on 3.0?
A1. Remove the "TM", since we don't have a TM registration (yet).
A2. Maybe enlarger the "Systems on Silicon" a bit and move the wafer further to the right and down a bit. So it is next to the "l" in SyoSil.
A3. Draw the text in black.
A4. Make the wafer colors brigther.
We would like to see you implement A1 and A2 and then either A3 or A4 or both at the same time.
Can we see a version of version 3.0, where the wafer is to the left of "SyoSil"?
Thank you all for your contributions,
Jacob Andersen

We like version 1a.B the most. (the one in the upper right corner). A couple of questions/requests:
1. How many colors are there in 1a.B? We count 6. Is it possible to see it in a 4 color version.
2. We also like the shaded font you used in version 1a.A. Kan you take the wafer from 1a.B and put it in 1a.A?

this is the revision as requested :)
Actually, the color used is only 3.
the other are tones from the main color.
1c.A use CMYK separation to achieve the shadow and gradation looks (but can also be made from just the 3 colors used, orange, red, and black)

Hi,
For now on, we would like to stick to version 7, if not explicitly stated in our directions.
Here are our first changes we would like to see:
1. The "." after "silicon" has to be removed completely
2. The colors on the wafer needs to be more clear. the yellow/orange color will disappear when printed on paper. We actually like the color, but every single person we have showed the logo to, recommends us to sharpen the colors, så we would like to see some experiments with this. Try to use red, green blue etc. and let us see how it turns out.
3. Try to play a little bit with the size of the wafer. It shouldn't be smaller, but we would like to see it a little bit bigger.

Hi,
Cool colors :-) It helped a lot by increasing the size as well. Now the wafer fits nicely into the "icon" part of "Silicon"
We like b, c and d the most. d is out favourite. We tried to beam them up on our projector and those ones looked the best. We will try to print them on an inkjet printer during the weekend.
In general, when you fade too much from dark -> light -> dark over the middle for the inner (blue in b, blue in c and light blue in d) color in the wafer, then the wafer appears to be broken into two pieces, and the cut goes from lower left corner to upper right corner. This is quite clear in e, especially if you look at it on a projector. In f you haven't faded the brown/orange color in the wafer. This looks better on a projector, but with the fading the logo looks much more cool.
If possible, we would ike to see:
1. b, c and d without the fading.
2. if possible as a hybrid, where you fade a little bit less than in the original drawings, but not completely without the fading
Furtermore we have had a look at the font, that you have used. To be honest, it looks like SyoSil is seen as if it was mirrored. Especially the "S"s in "SyoSil". The top of the "S" looks flat compared to the buttom, which makes the "S" looks like it has been mirrored.
Is this on purpose?
The same goes for the "o" in "SyoSil". Is it possible to switch to a font, which looks the same, but don't have this "feature"?
A last question. What is the policy/practise if we want the PhotoShop files as well as the JPEG?

Hi Jacob,
Here's the first part of your requests.
- I've included a solid color version of your top picks and I've created a set of hybrid logos based on the comments I got from you. I modified the fading slightly so that it didn't cut off the icon in two pieces.
- Could you explain to me a little more on the issue with the S's and the mirror issue? The font I used is called 'Myriad' (It is the same font Apple uses in its packaging and advertisements :P). This font was designed this way and therefore I have not modified it. If you wish for me to modify the letterforms, some extra guidance will help me a lot :P
Here's a higher resolution preview of the font:
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/6238/textok8.jpg
- There is no policy on formats, so if you need JPEGs as well as Photoshop PSDs, I can deliver them without a problem. I can also deliver Vector graphic formats: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PDF and Adobe EPS (You can scale these files as much as you want without any pixel degradation).
Best regards!
Derek

Hi,
Nice wrt. the formats.
It is quite hard to explain the "font" problem. I can see on the high res version, that the problem does not exist in that version, so it is probably linked to the resolution of the final image.
We don't want to tamper with the font right now, so will stick to commenting on the wafer.
We would like to work a little bit on the hybrid version of c. Can you try to make the colors even more bright, even more towards the basic colors. Hence, make the most orange almost red, and the most blue more blue.
Maybe you could make 2 versions, one where it is almost read/blue and one, which is in between the we have now, and the, just explained above.
We are trying to finalize the logo within this week :-)

Hello :)
Here in a) I came up with a blend of a more red mix and the blue tone has been slightly lightened for a sharper blue.... in b) i mixed in a little red but not too much, keeping the symbol towards the orange hues :)

Hi,
Thank you for your new contributions. We were just about to ask you to increase the final resolution, but I can see, that you have already done that - nice :)
I think that a slip in my English vocabulary has introduced a small misunderstanding between us. I think that the new color versions in version 10 are really nice. I know that I have asked you to make them brighter, but I actually think i mean sharper??? Or more contrast full.
We think that the span (dark->bright) you have on the fading of the orange color in 10.b is correct, but the bright orange used as the bright color is too bright (This time I meant bright!). The problem is that it disappears, when printed etc. Wrt. 10.a we think, that the dark orange color is better, but you fade too little for it to have enough effect.
So, we would like to make the orange fading with a span as wide as 10.b, but with even sharper colors. Thus, The dark orange must be a bit darker/sharper and the bright destination must be darkened/sharpened as well. In this version, you should keep the blue as in 10.a, but we would also like a version, where you fade the blue as in 9.a.hybrid. Here you should keep the blue color in 10.a as your base for the fading blue.
Does all this make sence?

We would like it in the following formats (in prioritized order):
1. Vectorized Adobe EPS
2. Photoshop PSD
3. JPEG
