Design Outpost Creative Brief Worksheet

Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?

Robert Hooper Photography

What type of product or service do you offer?

Wedding and portrait photography, along with general photography. Mostly weddings biased.

How long have you been in business?

This is my first year full time

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?

I want a professional looking corporate image. Clean, modern and elegant would be good: something that will be able to stay with me as I progress on to higher end clients.

What are your long term goals?

To be known and sought out as a high end wedding (and portrait) photographer

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?

No specific deadline in mind right now - I've stated a month (23rd Sept)

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience

Mostly couples in their 20's to 30's. Professional people who will pay for their own wedding.

Who would you like to add to your audience?

Successful couples looking for a high end service, and able to pay for same

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?

Open to ideas really - Must be easy on the eye/quite elegant. I quite like some logos I've seen with parts of the text (maybe my name) 'flowy' like caligraphy - but it must still be legible. I would also like to be able to use my initials on their own sometimes when space is tight... so I would like the whole thing to be easily identifiable.

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)

None specific. Not tooooo bold, I think

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?

Perhaps something could be done with my initials "R" and "H" as part of the logo?

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?

High quality, classy and modern.

What is your tagline or slogan?

None as yet

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?

I want my audience to see me as a high quality established wedding photographer who will deliver a highly professional product without question. Not cheap.

Where will your new logo be used?

Website, letterheads/stationery and on photographs when I post online etc.

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?

Wedding photographers - here is a selection of logos that caught my eye: www.roberthooper.co.uk/logos.htm

List competitive URLs if possible

What sets you apart from your competitors?

Hopefully my new logo! :D High quality, attention to detail and personal service.

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:

Exceptional contemporary wedding photography for modern couples looking for something to stand out from the crowd.

Other general info:
My website is http://www.roberthooper.co.uk

At the moment, there is just a boring heading on there, since I designed the site myself but don't have the skills for logo design. I would like to replace the heading with my new logo, and use the same logo throughout my stationery etc so as to help build a consistent coprporate image for myself.

Hi,

Thanks for the designs: I'll try to list some points in order...

1st design, not overly keen on - the badge-like RH is a bit gawdy for me. I also realised that I prefer the longer layout of the following logo designs as opposed to the more square shape of this one.

No2: This is more to my taste, but not quite there. I like this sort of layout... The RH idea on the left is nice, but I think could be a little more elaborate. I think I would also like to see "Robert Hooper" perhaps in a flowing script of some sort(?)

No3: I quite like the look of this one, ut it's a bit 'blocky' for me

No4 + No5: Less keen on these, particularly No5 because the symbol on the left wouldn't be identifiable as 'me' on it's own.

I've gathered together a number of logos that caught my eye - I'm not at home right now, but when I get back to my own pc I'll upload a folder to try to help show the sort of thing I like.

In a nutshell: something done with the RH on the left seems a good idea, and I'm thinking maybe some sort of flowing script for my name, above a more 'normal' text for photography

Thanks,

Rob.

I've made a temporary webpage just to show a few examples of logos I found that caught my eye. Maybe this will help:

Guetizo: Your version 2 logo is getting closer to what I have in mind I think. The version1 is also nice, but I think I like V2 better. Sorry for being vague, this is a first for me.

I like the flowing text of my name on this one set off by the 'normal' text for photography, but still feel there is something missing.

Would it be possible to try the above, or similar but with an added graphic of some sort to the left, made up of RH ? (there may be times I would use the graphic on its own overlaying a photo, when the full logo would be too big). Or would this just look silly with too much 'flowy' going on? If so, then maybe a flowy RH to the left then a more standard text on the right would be better. I wish I knew more about design to be more helpful!

Thanks,

Rob.

Wow you chaps have been busy...

I'll try addressing each design in turn.

djaka: not keen on that one, sorry. I don't like the font or the colourr, it's not me

elogonics: This has a certain appeal, but isn't quite there for me either. Not sure about the backwards symbol, although the idea was neat

Logoholik V1: A nice quality logo, but too blocky for me

Logoholik V2: I quite like the look of this but would like a bit more 'flourish' - it's nice, but maybe a little too plain. V3, same comments

Blesseville: Not sure on these

Dewa Jawa V6: I like this a lot. My girlfriend isn't keen on it though! ;) This definitely has promise for me though, I like the design a lot. Would it be possible to make the symbol on the left somehow more identifiable as RH so I could use it on it's own too? V7 symbol is a bit too 'blobby' for me, V8 too blocky again. Defo V6 is closest.

Guetizo V2.1 + V2.2: I still love the text/font on this - but the symbol doesn't work for me. With the right symbol RH on the left this would be a really strong contender for me still

Offbeat Desiogn V1: This has potential. I'd be interested to see this in the red/grey combo of colours as the above logo

Offbeat Desiogn V2: Same comments as above. Also, could you take the RH and do what you did with the V1 logo, and place it on the left?

Offbeat Desiogn V3: Too curly

Ok, thanks guys. Gosh, I'm feeling really fussy/indecisive, sorry if I come across that way. Important to get it right. At least now I think we're heading in the right direction. Thank you all for all the input so far.

Rob.

Thanks Dewa Jawa. I don't like No8, it looks a bit awkward. The others are possibles though. Still looking for that 'something' for the symbol on the left though.

Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree - please feel free to explore other graphics (maybe photography related) too. I don't want to get too stuck into one thing at the expense of other ideas...

Thanks guys, some great work.

I'm getting closer now, but I have a couple of questions...

When the project is finished, what sort of file do I receive at the end of it? I mean, I'm assuming it will be resizable - but will I be able to change the colours at all? The reason I ask, is because there are a couple of designs I'm liking now, but I would probably want to tweak the colours around myself until I got it spot on. Will I be able to do that?

Also - Will the logo be fixed as a one-piece affair, or can I have it in two parts (left hand symbol + right hand text seperately)?

Thanks.

That said... Offbeat design, V5 I like. I had a quick play with it myself, and I switched the box colours around, so the grey box went with the grey text and vice versa, which I preferred. I also shunted the text up slightly so it was almost aligned with the top of the box. This will be in the running for me, with the amendments mentioned.

I also like dewa jaya V13 - I like the way the left leg of the H is seperately drawn, which makes it more obviously a designed symbol instead of 'just' a font. Is it possible to elongate the right-leg of the H just a little so it extends a little below the rest? Does that make sense?

Thanks again for all the great input everybody.

Rob.

Thanks Rob. You'll receive editable files in vector format (for use in Illustrator or another vector editing program) along with fixed files as JPEGs and other formats depending on your needs. If you need layered Photoshop file that can be supplied as well by most designers.

Thanks again for the replies and further input guys. I know I'm seeming fussy now but I still haven't had anything that is quite right as yet. What happens if we reach my deadline date and I still haven't found the right logo?

Here's my thoughts as of now: maybe the RH thing just isn't going to work as well as I'd hoped. Would it be possible to make some other type of graphic symbol that represents something photographic perhaps, instead? As far as the 'writing' part of the logo goes, my favourites are those from the following messages:

Message 10
Message 11 - Lovely font, but needs the graphic element
Message 18 (I know this isn't the same as the others, but the overall look is nice)
Message 22 - Again - nice font.
Message 28

So... the writing part of the logo isn't really my issue. It's still the graphical element I'm struggling with. Bearing in mind I'm a photographer, I would really like something a bit 'arty' I guess. Definitely still open to new ideas. Sorry for being a pain.

Rob.

Thanks for the work, guys n gals.

Here's my feedback since last time:

Offbeat Design:
V7: Not keen, too basic
V8: This is much better - more 'arty'. A graphic with some imagination is what I'm after, and this has some good input
V9: Sorry, don't like that
V10, V11: Too 'boxy' again. Looking for something a bit more freeform, I think
V12,V15,V16 Remind me too much of London underground signs, don't like the circular idea at all
V13 too simple, too boxy
V14 too simple

Guetizo:
V2.3/V2.4: Still love that font - but the symmetrical pattern design doesn't say anything to me about either a) myelf or b) photography. Sorry

Dewa Jawa:
V15 I don't like the eye, and preferred the colours from previous versions. I still think there is potential in a symbol something like this but it needs expanding somehow

Deanna:
I like the creativity shown in this one, and that it does say 'photography' to me. Not keen on squares/boxes too much in the designs though - but I do welcome some photography type symbolism

Carol Taldo:
Nice font, but again the symbol would not be identifiable as either myself or photographic on it's own

Hm, long list of what I don't like. Here's a thought... I still like the idea of a 'flowing' freeform design, depicting something to do with photography. Can anybody use the idea of a shutter release somewhere in the design?

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

http://www.alzodigital.com/images/equipment/shutter_cable_release_sm.jpg

Perhaps a representation of one of those could be incorporated somehow?

Thanks.

Not struck on the mobious loop symbol, message 73 I'm afraid.

Dewa Jawa v18 this has some potential, I'm surprised that just adding the single circle behind the original design makes such a difference to it. Something along these lines might work.

Nobody wants to run with the cabel release idea at all? I thought perhaps the trailing leg of the R in my first name could possibly be extended to flow around and finish up by becoming a cable release end(?) Does that make any sense?

TiredRob

I like that (Guetizo v2.5) but I still need a graphic symbol I can place over my images too...

Dewa Jawa: your 'R' symbol inside the circle will work for me - I've been having a play so I could try to see how things would look, and I would be able to use that, looks good. This is what I had in mind:

http://www.roberthooper.co.uk/temp.html

So, I'm happy with the symbol - but still not 100% with the font. I still prefer the font used in message 11 from Guetizo. Is it possible to look at changing the font for something similar? I'm not sure how all this works on here, but that font is a little more flowing, whilst still easy to read - and I like the way the leg of the R balances the whole thing by trailing a little on the left of the word photography which balances up against the trailing P in my surname.

So... the red colouring is fine, the R symbol is fine, I would just like to see another font if possible, and we'd be in business.

I'm looking to get everything sewn up by the weekend if possible, because I am away next week.

Thanks,

Rob.

Will do, thanks.

DJ - On the other design we took the font from, the text was just slightly bolder. Can we make this text the same 'boldness' as that one please?

Also - Is it possible to see a version of this with my web address written underneath too? That'd be nice for me to be able to use as a signature for emails etc.

With regard to files when we're done, I'd like to have all files you can supply if possible, in case I decide to make some further revisions/tweaks in the future. I also need to able to use the logo on a range of different colours, so the ability to change logo colours will be almost essential. I have Photoshop of course, and access to Illustrator, so any and all files would be good.

Looking forward to making good use of the finished logo soon!

Thanks,
