Project Summary:

What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
RomeoChurch.com

See our site at: www.romeochurch.com (http://romeochurch.com)

What type of product or service do you offer?
Obviously, we're a church. But RomeoChurch.com is geared more towards people who aren't attending our church yet.

How long have you been in business?
165+ years

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
This is a key component of our branding strategy. All of our churchwide marketing will be "romeochurch.com" driven. So we want the logo to be remarkable, easy-to-identify, and unique. In our community, advertising a church as a .com is unique... we want to capitalize on that.

What are your long term goals?
Brand identity

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
September 15th

Audience Profile:

Please describe your existing audience
Our community is middle class, suburban. We're primarily reaching young families and empty nesters.

Who would you like to add to your audience?
We're hoping to reach more young families and young adults. Our target audience is web-savvy, is creative, and fun. We attempt to target our marketing towards men.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:

What type of logo would you like?
The logo needs to make a statement. The logo must feature "RomeoChurch.com" and also have an icon that will look good stand alone.

Here are two logo's that we like...
http://simplechurch.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/logo-with-lifechurch.jpg

http://www.michaelbuble.com/sites/michaelbuble/files/album_art/CMI_0.jpg

Also check out a sample of some of our designed stuff... it will give designers a flavor for who we are:
Romeo Marketing on Flickr (http://flickr.com/photos/58048067@N00/sets/72157600053360177/)

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
We're in Michigan, one of the cloudiest places in America. So feel free to use vibrant colors. Avoid "soft" tones as we're not interested in pastels or anything that says "feminine."

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
Please think of more than just crosses! We love the cross, just don't want to limit our thinking to just crosses. We really want an icon that means something but aren't certain what that symbol is yet and would love suggestions. We'd like to see something with "RC" but obviously don't want it to remind people of Royal Crown cola.

Communication Strategy:

What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
Tech-savvy, forward looking, young, vibrant, leaning towards masculine... we don't want women to hate it, but we don't want men to think we're sissies.

What is your tagline or slogan?
Not for use on the logo

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience? We want to convey that we are something much more intriguing and relevant than what they think of "church."

Where will your new logo be used?
Website, printed materials (weekly bulletins, monthly magazine, postcards, clothing, television advertising... basically... we're multimedia.)

Competitive Positioning:

Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos? We think most church logos are not remarkable enough to be memorable.

List competitive URLs if possible
Church's don't really compete with one another. But here are some church sites that we model what we do after...
North Point (http://northpoint.org/)
Willow Creek (http://willowcreek.org/)
North Ridge (http://www.northridgechurch.com/)
Kensington (http://kensingtonchurch.org/)

What sets you apart from your competitors?
Locally, we are doing a lot of innovation, doing a lot of interesting marketing. I think that sets us apart from the typical church who waits for people to come to them.

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company: Family friendly new feeling church

Today I'll be forwarding these first 3 to our small marketing team for review. If there are any more that would like to get comments on, now is the time.

nhr, deanna, and giant: Thanks for your submissions. I'll be getting feedback to you today.

I've gotten mounds of feedback from our team. Overall, we'd like to see more designers enter the contest. While these are all good, we want to see some different ideas.

A quick note: Originally, there wasn't consensus of whether or not we wanted the cross in our logo, based on the first round of feedback, universally the team wanted to see the cross symbol more.

Giant:Overall, your design has received the most positive feedback. The icon isn't trendy but has a classic enough feel to appeal to both young and middle aged alike. We'd be interested in seeing a revision that incorporated "RC" with the cross in it. Or also "RC" and incorporating ".com" Also, would you be willing to try different font/color combinations? We'd like that icon to be able to stand alone if needed.

Deanna:We like the overall idea as it has a nice feel, but we aren't sure why it has a "hurricane" feel. It seems like this idea would have a very short shelf-life. It looks great in black/white, but the colors are a bit drab. We'd be interested in a revision that had a different shape to it. One that feels less trendy. Also, the placement of the .com is a little hard to get.

nhrThis one got the strongest opinion. Unfortunately, not very many people liked the concept. Can we try something just as creative but integrating a cross or something?

Thanks for all your hard work. This is an amazing process to be a part of. Again, we'd love to have new submissions as well.

Moving forward, here are some general things that we'd like to see:

- We'd like the graphical elements to feature the text "RC" with a subtle use of the cross. If you could figure out how to put it in like the fededx logo does the arrow... bonus points!
- We'd like to see font uses in a script format with the "RC" So far all of the fonts have been chunky.
- We'd like to narrow the color choices to things that are more classic. So while we like tendy colors like orange and lime green... can we stay with more classic colors so we don't have to rethink a logo in 3 years when Orange and Lime Green are out of style? Some that come to mind would be blue, navy, forest, maroon, red, black, grey, khaki

I'll be providing some more specific feedback of things that have been submitted since our last feedback comment later today.

Thanks for your submissions. You all have us talking!

OK, mountain of feedback here. Please bear with me.

Dewa Jeya, v4. Thanks for your submission. The arrow doesn't fit at all. Also the script font on this one is too feminine.

Dewa Jaya, v2 & 3. We'd like to change the icon part of this... get rid of the .com in the box and make the "rc" and cross a single color. Red? We prefer the rectangle icon of version 3 instead of the square in version 2. Can you also play with the font of the "RomeoChurch.com" portion as well? We'd like that to look less formal, maybe scripted.

NHR- we like the layout of version 4 but the overall look is a little dated for what we need. Can you come up with another look to it that is fresher?

J. Johnson, versions 1 & 2 just didn't work for us. versions 3-5 we think have a lot of potential.

version 3- We love the classy font used here. It would need a ".com" on the end. Also the icon has a hidden cross... but I had to point it out to our team because it was too hidden. Also, the web 2.0 look may be a look we use on our website, but we'd need to see that as a solid color for exterior signage, etc. (see our big idea below)

v. 4 We really like the icon here. We feel it may be a little over-sized and the grey/blue colors aren't vibrant enough for us. The hidden cross is extremely well done. Could we make the "r" a little less bulky? (see our big idea below)

v. 5 The icon doesn't work for us at all. Too industrial, dated. We do dig the font though in the "romeochurch.com" part.

Our "big idea" for you. (or others that wanted to take a crack at something similar) Could you take the font from version 3 and the icon from version 4 and put them together. Actually... could you take the icon from v 4 and shrink it... then put it in a box similar to v 3?

Color-wise... everyone please take note.

- We'd like to narrow the color choices to things that are more classic. So while we like trendy colors like orange and lime green... can we stay with more classic colors so we don't have to rethink a logo in 3 years when Orange and Lime Green are out of style? Some that come to mind would be blue, navy, forest, maroon, red, black, grey, khaki

As we've seen what has been sent so far... no light gray. We'd like to see more in dark reds, burgundy, crimson... maybe even a metallic red? We haven't seen anything with forest yet. (Perhaps that's a bad logo color?)

I'd be interested as we wind this down why certain colors were chosen.

Thanks for all the hard work! I think we're nearing completion here.

I'd like to first thank all those designers who submitted in this contest. This has taken us a lot longer that I planned and for that I apologize.

At this time, we'd like to narrow this down to two finalist, get some last looks and revisions at this and finalize the contest.

We've chosen the following two designs as finalist:

Quick note:
Please take a second to look at http://churchrelevance.com/resources/top-20-church-logos/
in both finalist we'd like to see the word "Romeo" pop out of the logo much more than "Church.com" Please take a look at those and help us emphasize "Romeo" more. Maybe put "Church.com" beneath the word "Romeo" or something?

BlueCherryGraphics
We like the icon you've created in v. 4, 6, and 7. The icon part seems ready to go.

Now we're primary concerned about the font the lettering is in. While we like it, it's probably not legible on a sign where people are driving by at 50 MPH. Maybe something similar to version 4 or another simple font. (Please see the note above about making "Romeo" stand out.)

Color-wise. The red and black just isn't working. Maybe black and gold? Also, take a look at the above link to see if any color combos work well.

Giant
icon from v. 3.1 and text from v. 3
In the icon we would like to get rid of the ".com" Also, could we look at the fonts inside the icon and find something that stuck out a little more. Likewise, the overall color scheme just aren't working. Could you please look at the link above and try some of those? Specifically look at "valley community church" and "westcoast church" to see how they made the lettering unique.

Please revise the arrangement of the text in the text portion of the logo to emphasize "Romeo" and de-emphasize "Church.com"

As soon as we get these revisions, we will pick a winner and ask for some final variations on this project.

Thanks again for all the hard work!

Adam

Here are a couple logos worth looking at... they show what I mean by making the name "Romeo" stand out and "Church.com" not be emphasized.

First, I want to apologize for the way this got spread out. We just struggled offline with it and then it got buried a few times.

BlueCherryGraphics- Jennifer- We are happy to announce that you are the winner of this contest. We are very pleased with the outcome of this project. Please see below for final edits.

Everyone else, I want to thank you for your ideas and entries. There was plenty to look at and we were pushed and had to rethink things many times as a result of your submissions and that's a great thing.

Final edits- We'd like the final graphics in both the version 8 and version 9 style. We'd like to use the font "century gothic" for the final versions on the text "romeochurch.com". (Think that's a standard font) Also, there is some debate still going on about punctuation... so if we could get the final graphics with "RomeoChurch.com" and "romeochurch.com" that will give us some flexibility to respond to people's concerns.

Look at the century gothic on this to see how we field tested it with diff fonts.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2348/1747382291_dca15d5468.jpg

As far as the colors go. (The biggest item of debate) We'd obviously like flat black and flat white versions.

For the colored versions:
red: 670001 (html color)
black: 000000 (html color)

If we could get the files in .jpg, .eps, minimum that would be great. If you'd like to share the .ai file, we'd appreciate that as well as the color is still not finalized. (At this point, we just want to close the contest so you get paid.)

Thanks again,

Adam
