Project Summary:
Our company is interested in updating the look of Online Dating Zone (www.online-dating-zone.com), which has grown to the point where a more thoughtful and professional logo and color scheme would benefit our users.

A new logo will be the first step in a total site overhaul for Online Dating Zone. Step two will involve updating the site’s color palette to match that of the new logo. During this process, there may be further opportunities available for the designer of the winning logo as we integrate the new colors with the rest of the site.

What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Online-Dating-Zone.com
Find, Review & Compare Online Dating Services

As for formatting, our sites customarily carry the .com inline with the rest of the address. The font face and height of the .com should be the same as the rest of the text. Also, a small trademark symbol should be placed just to the right of .com.

What type of product or service do you offer?
Information about online dating services, as well as special offers from online dating services, including Match.com, eHarmony, Chemistry.com, and Yahoo Personals.

How long have you been in business?
Five years.

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
We aren’t aiming to establish a brand or an identity; rather, we want a logo and color scheme that will leave our visitors feeling that our site is trustworthy and professionally designed.

What are your long term goals?
To continue our site’s growth and popularity.

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
Friday, September 14, 2007

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
Men and women of all ages—but primarily from 22 to 39—who are looking for reviews of and information about online dating services.

Who would you like to add to your audience?
Those who may be skeptical about using an online dating service.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
We’re looking for something professional that will not look dated in six months. Clean lines and modern styling are good as long as the resulting logo can’t be easily identified as “Web 2.0”-style design.

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
Part of this project involves developing a new color scheme, so the color palette for this project is wide open with the exception of most of the colors currently in use on our site. Please avoid these colors, or at best, use them sparingly or in different, richer shades. The colors in the winning logo will be the basis for the second phase of the site makeover, in which we will re-skin the rest of the site to match the logo.

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
Not particularly; however, we would like to convey an idea of love or dating, but if possible, the metaphor used to express the idea shouldn’t be too obvious. Our current logo—the heart—is of the obvious sort. Most of our competitors rely on this sort of imagery, and we’re trying to differentiate ourselves.

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
That we represent not only a way to find online dating services, but we also offer information to educate potential users of online dating services. Most of all, that we’re a trustworthy site capable of guiding visitors to the best services on the Internet.

What is your tagline or slogan?
Find, Review & Compare Online Dating Services

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
That Online Dating Zone is a professional and trustworthy source of dating information.

Where will your new logo be used?
The logo will be prominently displayed at the top of every page on our site.

What sets you apart from your competitors?
We offer better content and are more interested in the user.

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Tips, advice, and opportunities for the Internet dating scene.

Inspiration:
Match.com has a cute logo that, while somewhat corny, conveys what they do without relying on clichés. It’s a good example of how to break away from the standard metaphors used by most dating sites.

What to Avoid:
The resulting logo should not resemble the logos of any of our partners. You can find a full list of our partners here: http://www.online-dating-zone.com/services/

Size and Format:
Our current logo is 400 pixels wide by 75 pixels high, and we would like to maintain this aspect ratio of 16:3. The logo should be a vector image in Illustrator format.

Hi all,
First off, thanks for all of the submissions, your time and effort. I've got a few suggestions and some feedback, so here goes.

My general thought is that the designs with people in them are the strongest. I didn't think I'd like having people in the design until I saw some of the first drafts. That said, here are my specific comments for each logo:

Unorthodox: I'm fond of where you're going with the two people forming a heart. Could you do another treatment with bolder colors, a less-rounded font, and the tagline below the site name?

Titania: The mouse is a little too computer-oriented and not people-oriented enough. The font is a bit sharp, but the colors are a good choice, as they won't clash with the logos of any of our partners.

nhr: The spyglass would work if we focused more on search, but it doesn't really fit what we're doing. I really like the font in version 1.0, though, but the tag line could stand to be a bit bigger. And while I'm not crazy about the colors, they are a step in the right direction (i.e., bold and rich).

LutFi: I like the graphic here, and the font is really nice, but the pink-on-black color scheme will probably force us to use pink as the primary color on the site, which is something we're trying to avoid (I should have mentioned this earlier, and I apologize). Could we see a version without the hearts above the letter i with a color other than pink? Also, The heart above the people makes the graphic a bit busy; perhaps the color change will help this?

Artemi: The colors and font aren't bad, but the graphic doesn't work for me.

Blesseville: I really like the graphic, which is funny because I wanted to avoid hearts. Nice first treatment. The colors are good, too, and will serve the rest of the site well. Could you do another treatment with larger text?

Hi again all,
Great work. These are really coming together nicely, and I'm having trouble deciding which I like the most.

Blesseville: The larger font looks great, but I like the second treatment better. It's great work, sharp and clean. Could we see another treatment of version 2 with a color scheme that's a little less primary?

Unorthodox: This design is really growing on me. I like version 2 a lot more than version 3. As with Blesseville's work, could you do a revision of version 2 with a color scheme that's less primary?

Lutfi: I'm not so big on the first revision, but the second one has promise. Could you take the circle out from under the people and make them look a little less abstract? Maybe give them necks?

Logoholik: The first logo is alright, but the second version is really, really nice. Love the colors. Could you try a revision to the second logo with no circle around the hearts and the tag line in title case?

Fabian: This design is a little too organic for what we're doing. We were hoping for something more sleek.

Thanks again for all of your time and effort.

Hi again all,
I know that today is the deadline for this project, but we're probably going to extend this into next week. So don't be afraid to submit revisions or alternate versions.

Blesseville: I still really like the design, but the colors in version 2.1 and 2.2 are too pastel. Could you try one more with a darker, richer palette?

Unorthodox: Still a big fan of this one, too, but the colors still aren't working. It's not that the colors are bad; I'm just having trouble seeing an entire website based around this palette. Could you do a couple more with different palettes? Also, can you make the subheadline as wide as the site name and place the TM after the .com?

Again, great work everyone. Thanks for the time and the effort.

Regards,
Jeff

Unorthodox: Could we see one more version with red as the primary color? Think Version 4 with the colors flopped, or version 5e with yellow instead of green.

Kuler.adobe.com is awesome. :)
