Hello!

My name is Jill Bourque, and I'm the producer and director of a theater show in San Francisco called, "How We First Met." I've been amazed at the quality of design work I've seen here and can't wait to see what you can do with my project!

--------------------------------------------------
Project: Logo re-design for theater show: HOW WE FIRST MET

Design challenge: How to combine sexy and funny!

Contest ends: Wednesday, October 1st

About HOW WE FIRST MET
In its fourth year, HWFM is a popular improv theater show, in which real couples are interviewed live on stage by a host and their stories are improvised right on the spot. HWFM is based in San Francisco and also plays in other cities around the world during, and beyond, the Valentine’s Season. See www.howwefirstmet.com

This press review gives a pretty good explanation:
http://www.sfgate.com/listings/event.php?p...ormance,e137603 (http://www.sfgate.com/listings/event.php?performance,e137603)

Who goes to our shows?
It appeals to couples, girl’s night out, single groups, and bachelorette parties. It seems to particularly appeal to women, but men like the show too. Audience members go see the show to laugh, and have a night out with their friends or significant other. Often they’re looking for a good date night event. Valentine’s Day is our biggest night of the year, and tickets sell-out far in advance.

Our logo right now:

For the past two years we’ve had a “cute and fun” logo:

<img src='http://www.howwefirstmet.com/hwfm-do.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

The purpose of this logo was to show the fun and light aspect of the show. To get across that it was a bit like “When Harry Met Sally.” We wanted the audience to feel comfortable about going to the show.

But, now we’d like the show’s image to reflect its more daring side…

Going Forward
Starting February 2004, we want to re-brand our image to better communicate the intimate, sexy, and fun nature of the show. Instead of a theater, our show will be played in a cabaret setting with two-full bars. And in lieu of theater seats the seating will cabaret-style tables and chairs, love seats, and booths. It’s a whole new direction for us. And it all starts with our new logo to reflect that image.

Also, in the past we’ve been very tied to Valentine’s Day. And while that is still our favorite holiday, we want an image that can last throughout the year. Overall, we want to tell people that this is the ultimate date-night show. We are open to any and all ideas!

Hi dynagirl!

THANK YOU for submitting a design. I was starting to worry that we wouldn't get one!

Your design is great. It definitely has a great flow, though I'm looking for something more edgy and sexy. Maybe something that typifies that moment when you meet someone and you know they are the ONE. Your design definitely hits on the soulmate theme.

I know this is a tough one conceptually. Please do submit more designs everyone!!

Thanks!

Jill

P.S. Is it my imagination or is there a ton of landscaping and petting sitting logos on this site. Actually I heard about this site from someone who had a great cat sitting logo done.

That's the power of 1 person spreading the word. The landscaping folks are courtesy of Jeff from GroundTradesXChange (http://www.groundtradesxchange.com) telling his friends all around the internet.

The pet sitting contests are from BeagleTracy posting a message in her Yahoo newsgroup I believe...

The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters will be featuring us in their next quarterly magazine. The avatar I use is actually in honor of them and how much they have done to boost our business here. I love pet sitters!

You said sexy and edgy...

Jill Bourque

Yeah!!! Thanks for submitting!

Raja: Great idea. I like the typeface, the colors, and the stage concept. Is there a way you could streamline that idea and perhaps give it more personality?

Pennyln: Great concept! Yes, very edgy indeed. I think I'd like it if you removed the little friend. Also, the colors are great perhaps deepen them a bit. But I'm really intrigued as to what else you might come up with. (BTW, Penny Lane is one of my all time favorite songs, and for awhile when I was a kid I lived near the actual street in Liverpool. Is the name any relation to the song?)

Overall: Perhaps the logo doesn't even need a picture. A sexy typeface treatment might work too.

More, more, more please!!! :P

Be careful about being inspired too much. One of the rules of the site is to not copy each other. Please look them over in the designers private forum.

Thanks :)

Hi kalvinhobs,

You definitely nailed the funny part, and I like the quirky romantic look of the design. And I do like the color scheme. It might work for some other artwork for the show (I.e. web graphics and postcards), but for the logo I'm looking for something a bit more upscale and alluring.

So far each designer has hit upon the elements I'm looking for:

dynagirl: soulmate
Raja: warm tones, theater setting
pennyln: edgy & sexy
kalvinhobs: funny & romantic

Can we weave these together? Am I giving the right kind of feedback?

Thanks!

Jill

gender symbols along with a movie poster typeface

Me likey! Now we've got some contenders.

Bill: The two faces as one idea is wonderful. Another great visual concept. Is there anyway to integrate the words with the logo more? (BTW, when my husband saw your last entry he just about fell on the floor laughing. He loved it.)

Raja: I really love the typefaces, colors, and image. Definitely the look I'm going for. And the gender symbols have a nifty personality. And I like that they can each stand on their own. The URL as a tagline is great, though a short sassy descriptive tagline would be perfect there. I'll try and think of one.

This is going to be a tough decision.

One note: The show sometimes has same sex couples. Though I don't think either of these designs would necessarily exclude these pairings.

Great work!!!

Revisions to 2 heads logo

Jill Bourque
09-28-2003, 07:13 PM
Hi Bill,

Thanks for the revisions. I like the first typeface style best (though still open to other ideas) and if it could be in red, that would be great. If you could possibly get the words all on one line that would work better for me. They just seem too far apart right now. And I definitely like the logo against a black background.

Thanks!

Jill

Hi,
One more try, it is funny again but also sexy :) Drawings are rough, just trying to give an idea.

Thanks everyone for the great logos!

Bill: The logo looks great. Could you also do a version against white?

Raja: I've shown your logo to others in our group. Everyone loves the typeface, but some think that the gender symbols are making it a bit too busy. Any way to work with the gender symbols to make it a bit more cohesive? If not, the typeface alone is very nice. Also, can you do a version against black? (Perhaps white font colors?)

kalvinhobbs: Thanks for your design. Definitely funny and sexy. I think something that both Bill and Raja have accomplish that really works is making the image a less literal translation. They've really hooked into the idea of two people meeting and becoming a unit. Sexy doesn't always mean sexual. ;) Does that make sense?

Thanks again for your wonderful work!!

And the winner is...Raja!

It was a very difficult decision, but the typeface treatment that was used in the design really won us over.

Thanks to everyone for participating. I'll definitely be back for more designs!

Thanks guys. Yeah, we have to stop this Bill guy. I'm surprised no one picked up on what the female symbol is doing to the male symbol. He's smiling.

I'll get in contact wit you, Jill. Thanks again :)
