Ok, everyone. I need two banners designed (there will be TWO banners picked, and the prize will be split between the two winners, unless both banners were designed by the same designer in which case he would keep the entire prize).

Here you can find the specs for the banner, as well as what the stand looks like, etc.

http://www.displays2go.com/product.artwork.asp?ID=6936

We are going for the 59" (wide) by 82" (tall) design.

Ours is a perfume store (logo designed right here on DO). I'm having Palmer or Abby attach a copy of my logo for all to see. The banner should be attention grabbing and should MAKE people want to come into our store. These will be displayed outside our store, in the parking lot area.

Below I am outlining some of the categories of products that we carry, and some of the more popular brands in each category.

Perfumes and Colognes:
Chanel, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein

Collectibles:
Jim Shore, Precious Moments, Willow Tree

Candles and Home Fragrance:
Yankee Candle, Pierre Rousseau Collection, Archipelago Botanicals, Lampe Berger

I will leave the CONTENT of the banner up to you, as to whether you use brand logos only, or product pictures, or text, or all of the above.

My only OBJECTIVE or REQUIREMENT with this poster/banner, is that it get people to come into our store. How that is accomplished will be left to your artistic discretion.

Here are some options.

1-Marketing text-For example, we might want to advertised a guaranteed lowest price on all perfume and colognes. If you find it for less, let us know and we will match the price.

2-Product Pictures-Please make sure that they are high enough resolution to look good on a poster of this size.

3-Brand Logos

4-Custom designed graphics or characters (NOT to be confused with stock photos or characters).

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hi there, I am interested in your project, I would just like to clarify: Are you totally adverse to the use of stock photography, if it enhances the design - or would you expect original model photography? Can you supply photography?
Also, are you able to provide the logos for your products?
Thank you kindly.
Kimber.

PerfumeHut
09-15-2007, 09:20 AM
Ok, sorry. Let me clarify here.

1-No, I'm not opposed to stock photography, I would just kindly ask that I be advised that it is a stock character, and not a custom sketched one.

2-I am not able to provide logos. Most of the time, with work I've done with my own designer (one of the designers right here on DO), he's been able to recreate the logo. None of the brand logos are very complicated.

3-Product Photographs can be taken right from the web. Just make sure they are sufficiently large (in terms of resolution) to look good on a poster/banner this large.

Thank you kindly, for your quick reply. I'll work on some designs for you.

Hello,

Here is a proposal for the banner. The pic's can be replaced as needed. I used very little text so that cars passing by will read the most important thing.... guaranteed lowest price. Alternatively.. Could use the text "Price Match Guaranteed" for the header.

The images used are stock photos.

Thanks,
Vic

Mockup of sign itself...

Remember, just for your information, and with regards to the mockup, that our poster will actually be MUCH bigger than that. Take a look at our specs for exactly the poster size we are going with.

As far as this first idea. The pictures are a bit too abstract. If we are going with product photos, I would prefer that they be ACTUAL product photos (products that I carry), versus stock photography of general "perfume" or "candle" products. Know what I mean? In other words, I would prefer that it be an ACTUAL perfume picture, or a picture, of, for example, a Yankee Candle.

Hi there. Regarding the product pictures. Is it possible for you to give us an actual images of your product inside or outside it's packaging? I think that grabs more attention and straight forward to what you are really selling. Customers get what they see.

PerfumeHut

Instead of using a picture of one product which can pigeonhole you, focus on the brands you carry and a generic bottle with the "PR" logo. Of course, the brand logos can be adjusted as needed.

Fabian
09-15-2007, 06:46 PM
Hey, it is great to see you again.

In keeping with the brand that we started to create with the postcard, Ive used the same colours and style. This is how a strong brand is established; each piece has a cohesive element to it. Each piece should have your brand on it; this goes far beyond just placing the logo on items.

Artwork is all vector and made to specs, bleeds are shown.

I am hoping that you continue on the branding direction that we started; this is how to become a brand that people will remember.

Cheers
Fabian

Again, focusing on selection and pricing

PerfumeHut
09-15-2007, 07:00 PM
Jeff, of your submissions, BY FAR the one that I like the most is the third one. I like the play on "scent-sational" in the first one but it's far too jumbled for my taste.

Fabian, I'm not in love with this idea, to be honest. It just doesn't say, at first glance, what we carry, and, it lacks a sort of cohesiveness to it that I would like.

I want everyone to know that, while the name of the store is "The Perfume Room" we run into difficulty in trying to inform people that only HALF of our store is perfume. The rest is candles, gifts (Precious Moments, etc), etc.

This is a problem that has not really been addressed yet, in any of the submissions but, I'm still hopeful that it will be.

Also, Jeff, I don't really agree, necesarily, with specific products pigeonholing me. I think that, the purpose of a poster like this one is kind of as a secondary window display. The goal with any window display is to draw people into the store with a selection of different product that you carry, that will hopefully catch their eye. This is what we are trying to carry out here, without having the poster look jumbled, or intrusive.

This is my idea so far, I'm planning to have logos fading from the very top in an eye catching way, but for now I wanted to see if it was in the right direction for you.

I decided to go with a very bold background colour, as I don't think that a plain white background would attract many eyes. I also wanted to keep things simple and stay away from stock images as they detract from your message in my opinion.

Let me know what you think so far...

Excellent, I shall begin working on a design first thing in the morning. :)

PerfumeHut
09-16-2007, 07:26 AM
Zoe, here are some ideas in keeping with your original sketch idea. How about taking some product pictures of Precious Moments, Yankee Candle, and some others (I can help you select them), and then sketching them, so that it doesn't LOOK like a picture, but rather, like a sketch, just like what you did in your submission?

PerfumeHut
09-16-2007, 07:27 AM
By the way, guys and gals. I will be going out of town tomorrow (Monday) afternoon, and will be gone until Friday morning, so, my commentary will be VERY limited until I get back. I will continue monitoring and commenting until I leave tomorrow.

Zoe
09-16-2007, 04:14 PM
OH, unfortunately I wouldn't be able to recreate the Precious Moments. I am not an illustrator and thus do not have sketching abilities. The image I submitted, was designed in CAD and then rendered.

PerfumeHut
09-16-2007, 06:35 PM
Ok, I would still like to see what you have to offer.

Zoe
09-16-2007, 07:06 PM
Here is my idea for the banner. The images at the bottom are 10inch by 10inch. The images I have used are copyright so therefore we would need to contact the companies and ask them if they have an image we can use for promotional purposes. We can replace them with any image they will be happy to provide.

Due to the size of the banner, it will look good at a distance of 1 metre or further.

Zoe
09-16-2007, 10:13 PM
Here is another idea for a banner. The concept is to decorate your home with fine fragrances and ornaments.

Please ignore the "colours" of the main image. If you like the image itself and selected to use this design, I would change the items within the image to match the overall colours of your brand.

I also plan to add the 3D perfume and candles to the tables.
I also considered removing the woman and using another woman spraying perfume on herself.

Zoe
09-16-2007, 11:05 PM
Another idea for your consideration...

PerfumeHut
09-17-2007, 07:55 AM
I like #36 but wish that we could somehow illustrate the pictures on the bottom, so that the entire poster could flow more readily. I'm not quite convinced, to be honest.

If any illustrators wanna take a shot at this, by all means.

I'm leaving in about two hours, and won't be back until the end of the week, so, my commentary will be sparse (if any at all).

OffbeatDesign

Images have been vectorized, so they have a stylized look and can be printed large without a loss quality.

PerfumeHut
09-17-2007, 09:00 AM
Jeff, the White Background doesn't quite pop enough for me. I like the fact they are LARGE, and in CHARGE, but, can we somehow, somewhere, put in "100% SCENT-Sational Low Price Guarantee"?

BlueCherry, not quite what we are going for. It's a bit too abstract/subtle. I don't expect people to sit there and read through all those brand names in the background and the purpose of something like this is to draw attention right away.

I'm sorry but we are not allowed to communicate via private message until the winner has been chosen...

Received via Private Message:
I like the general idea of your submission but would prefer a full color type illustration. I will gladly provide you with the pictures if you want. I'm going to post some GENERAL thoughts on the forum, but, can you let me know if a full color type illustration is a possibility, if I provided you with around 5 pictures of products? It might even be neat if it LOOKED like an illustration, rather than a picture, know what I mean?

It would be great if you could provide a couple of the pictures of the products for me to work with. An illustration type is possible.....maybe I could do one of the products in the style you like and we could go from there. Also if you can site some of the illustration styles that you liked (from my site).
Thanks, Deanna

As far as illustration style. I like most everything you have done on your portfolio on your website, to be honest.

Since the final piece is remarkably large the image have to quite large as well! Please correct me if I am wrong. It might be better to photograph the products and then provide the images.

Yeah, that's gorgeous. Are you working on the other items as well?

How close are you to finishing your entire submission?

I am almost done with this illustration...Was going to work on the precious moments and the chanel later... Problem is I teach an 8:00 class tonight that is three hours long.....
Let me know what you would prefer for me to do... I can put in the reference images for the other part of the banner so you can get an idea of the finished submission.....
Thanks,
Deanna

Please do that. That way we don't have to keep pushing back the deadline. If you are chosen one of the two winners, you can finish the other few illustrations.

I need this sat and sunday to do what I want to do but I know the deadline is today so that is understandable. Sorry I couldn't make it in!

Shima, if you wanna try to get it in today, that's fine, but, I simply can't extend it all the way to Saturday or Sunday, sorry.

Deanna, I love the illustration but, I'm not crazy about the poster itself or the layout or background.

New one...

I like this one MUCH better, but, I kinda think that the BEST use of your lovely illustrations might be a more simple, larger version of each one, with all three to five items together, in a larger, simple way.

Maybe the best option, Deanna, would be to split the poster into four sections (top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right) and put the four illustrations (these three, and maybe the Jim Shore Piece, or a Yankee Candle, or a Willow Tree piece).

Deanna, how long would it take you to complete the other three illustrations?

I could have all four of them done by Sunday night.....let me know what you want to do...that would be the rousse candle, the chanel bottle, the precious moments piece and one of the other three...

Thanks,
Deanna

Ok, thanks to EVERYONE for their submissions. I'm going to select the following two winners.

Kelly - #103 - Kelly, can you please take out all the wording on the right side, and maybe replace with an illustration of a Willow Tree Figurine? Also, on the wording on the left, replace "Collectibles" with "Gifts".

I'm also picking Shnickerdoodle's style of illustration. I'm going to select her a winner. Please let me see the other illustrations (the other three), so that we can play a bit with the layout. I don't know if maybe the best option is what I previously suggested...namely one illustration in each "quadrant" of the poster, or possibly the four of them right next to each other, kind of on a table so to speak.

Deanna, are those pictures or your illustrations?

Also, I like this one ALOT better, but I would prefer to remove all that stuff at the bottom, and just make the pictures bigger.

PerfumeHut

Deanna remember that you forgot to illustrate the wicks at the top of the candle also. I would also condense the top to read "Candles & Home Fragrance" and the last one to read "Gifts" (remove the collectibles)

Kelly, is there any chance (without being too much bother) that you could illustrate the same Willow Tree that Deanna Chose, and put it in at the top right, instead of the one you illustrated? Sorry about that. Let me know.

Hello,

Those are the pictures (using them as placeholders to get the design right while I am working on the illustrations. I will not forget the wicks or the matchsticks :D

I will make those revisions on it, but one question I had was, do you want any of the brand logos in it or the tagline? Do you want me to take out all of the logos or change any of the colors?
Thanks,
Deanna

PerfumeHut

No, you can take out all the taglines/logos, so that it's a cleaner, larger area covered by the illustrations.

Sure, I can do that this afternoon!
