Hi everyone

I've used this service once before and was most impressed by the results (and the creativity of the process) so looking forward to seeing what you come up with this time :-)

Joanna

Project Summary:

What text should be included in the main part of the logo?

Confident Writing

What type of product or service do you offer?

I'm a writing coach - helping people to write with more confidence. (This is more likely to be business writing, writing at work, promotional writing, non-fiction writing than creative)

My business site and business blog is here:

http://www.confidentwriting.com

How long have you been in business?

6 months

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?

Brand recognition - especially for new products (books, training materials) that I am working on

What are your long term goals?

Reputation as the best person around to help the writer find their voice and enjoy the confidence boost that goes with it; recognised trainer and author of materials that help people to write with confidence

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?

26th September

Audience Profile:

Please describe your existing audience

Individuals interested in the writing process (especially those who follow blogs!), those who write for pleasure

Who would you like to add to your audience?

Business people whose writing holds them back; managers and HR professionals looking for support for individuals struggling with the written word

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:

What type of logo would you like?

Clear, simple, confident

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)

Possibly darkish green - see the colour scheme for my website - but I'm open to ideas

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?

No. And remember it doesn't have to be linked or associated with novels or creative writing - I want to talk to people who write in a more everyday sense

Communication Strategy:

What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?

Straightforward, approachable, friendly, clear, confident.

What is your tagline or slogan?

"Because our words count"

(I would be interested to see a logo version with the tagline too if that's possible)

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?

There are simple things you can do to write with more confidence, I can help you work out what they are

Where will your new logo be used?

Website, materials (books, e-courses), promotional materials

Competitive Positioning:

Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?

Jacqui Lofthouse - a bit too dreamy with stars shooting out, and I want to move away from the book image

http://stubbornworld.typepad.com/the_writing_coach/

Jurgen Wolff - nice clean site but logo doesn't do much for me

http://www.yourwritingcoach.com/

Syntax training - similar market (business writing dimension anyway) - but logo doesn't seem to reflect that.

http://www.syntaxtraining.com/signup.html

Plain language - wrong colours, too magical, doesn't go with the aim of plain language

http://www.plainlanguage.com/blog/

What sets you apart from your competitors?

[I]Rapport

Ability to write with clarity and confidence (I try and model this daily on my blogsite)

Set writing within the wider system that affects the writer - values, relationship, performance, beliefs, sense of purpose and direction

Targeted Message:

State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:

Coaching you to write with confidence

Oooh...I'm impatient I know - itching to see what you come up with - and just checking - there isn't anything else you need from me just now that would help with the design ideas?

Hi Blesseville

Thanks for kicking things off. I quite liked the button idea - it looks like something I might be tempted to click! and the font you've used for the words.

I couldn't quite work out what the image was supposed to be though - is it the tip of a pen?

I liked the upward direction though - suggesting confidence.

In terms of colours - I preferred message #3 to message #4

I'd like to see what other designs come in before I give more detailed feedback or encourage you to do more work if that's okay

Hi Quetizo

Thanks for your suggestion. It's similar in style I guess to the first contribution (the circular button) and it doesn't do too much to inspire me - the pen nib is a fairly standard image and a bit on the old fashioned side when you think how little any of us write with a pen any more. (Maybe it's different for designers!)

I think I'll wait and see what else comes in before offering any suggestions for design alterations if that's okay - don't want to put you to unnecessary extra work.

Thanks everyone for your contributions so far. I don't feel I've seen just what I'm looking for yet... so keep them coming!

Feedback to the design ideas that have come in so far:

#9 Taldo: it was quite an interesting idea but it didn't really resonate with me - I find it hard to say why, sorry

#10 Blesseville - thanks for redoing it. The figure at the bottom is now more obviously a person, and I do like the upward movement - it still isn't really working for me though

#11 Djaka - thanks - it has a nice flow but a bit too whimsical with the stars. It needs to be something that can work with a business audience as well as individuals

#12 Djaka - thanks - this one really made me smile! I think it might still be too 'light' for a business type audience but perhaps you could play around with a bit - I felt there was "too much" of it, especially in the height - perhaps you could try moving the image alongside the words, perhaps just the pencil not the "eyes", perhaps dropping 'because our words count'

NB to all - the strapline 'because our words count' isn't essential - I'm happy for you to try it with and without to see what works best in terms of look, shape, size....

#13 Djaka - I didn't really feel I was getting much more than the words replayed here - I guess I want some kind of icon or image to associate with the words

#14 BlueCherry - this is the design so far that has made me feel the most confident - I think it's the mixture of the font and the swish of the brush stroke. Could you try it with a different colour or two - I don't think I could go with red - although it is confident! Also is there any way you could link a brush stroke to a pen/pencil in any way...? (Feel free to ignore this suggestion if it sounds too mad!)

Hope this feedback is useful, thanks all for your ideas and contributions so far.

Hello all - thanks for the additional designs and revisions.

Some more feedback

Taldo #16 - It's a nice simple design. Maybe a bit too clinical, but it puts the point across

Blue Cherry # 17, 18, 19 - thanks for experimenting with the pens and pencils. You probably knew this when I asked you (sorry!) but I think it's too visually distracting - makes it harder to make sense of the words

NHR # 20 This too is a clean and simple design. It does convey quite a lot of what I'm after. Just - doesn't grab me somehow. Sorry - I realise this isn't the most useful feedback...

I hope I'm not being too picky - still looking for something that makes me sit up and say "yes!!" - so I'm extending the deadline by a week and going to increase the pot to $220.

Please keep on trying if you're interested!

Thanks

Hi, thanks again for further contributions

# 26 Offbeat design

I'm not sure the simple button + words is really working for me (there have been a few of these suggested) - and I think this version would be too close to the copyright sign

# 27 - 34 Bluecherry

Thanks for the font options. I'm sure one of these will work if I end up going with this design. Need to chew over which one I like best though!

# 35 Taldo

I see where you're coming from but the stars aren't really working for me - a bit too whimsical

Hope this helps

Hi Joanna,

Back with the same and... some more.
This is the full concept of my previous entry. As you can see its a symbiosis between a ink pen and a book (pages). I still think and I have to my self that the pen as the meaning of those - yes, past - days where the written was done by the best and in the best way.

Thanks for the contributions and variations :-)

# 37 and 38

Quetizo - thanks for developing this and explaining your thinking behind it. I'm afraid the synthesised image isn't really working for me though

# 39 and 40

Taldo - thanks for continuing to work on this. 39 (your version 4) doesn't do so much for me - I still quite like the simplicity and clarity of #40 (your version 5) including this version of the font and colour

All - I'm still wondering if there's an image or design concept out there that goes beyond, that adds something special... over and above the words 'confident writing'

What do you think?

Joanna

Fabian
09-28-2007, 08:54 AM
Hopeful I am not too late, but this concept just dawned on me. Using colour and the “i” to make a bold statement that we are confident in our writings and are willing to stand front and centre.

jo4coaching
09-29-2007, 03:18 AM
Fabian, you're not too late and I like the concept. Of putting the "I" back into confident!

I'm wondering if you could experiment a little with it, perhaps some slight variations with the pen/pencil, and maybe the fonts for the words?

Joanna

All: I'm still undecided on this so please feel free to jump in if ideas and possibilities come to you

Fabian

Hi Joanna,

Do you have a font style in mind?
One more question do you pefer a serif font or a San Serif?

Cheers
Fabian

jo4coaching
09-29-2007, 06:59 AM
Fabian - I don't have a font in mind. I quite liked the confident but not the writing - maybe because it was in caps?

'Fraid I don't know the difference between serif or san serif!

Sorry about that,I keep forgetting that normal people (people with lives) dont know what a serif is...serif's are little flicks on the tails much like this Confident Writing, this generally gives the font a classic look.

I'll do up a couple of each and post them soon :)

Fabian

Here is a revised design using the same front and centre approach but this time simplifying it into a punctuation mark.

Fabian

Blue Cherry # 46, 47, 48

I quite liked the idea, but probably not as much as your earlier suggestions. The pen nib looked a little bit owl-like to me, but it might just be me...

Fabian # 50, 51

Thanks for experimenting. I think I prefer san serif now I know what it is! Not sure it's worth further experimenting just now.

Xpressions

#52 I liked the concept - but found it hard to read I'm afraid

#53 again quite an interesting idea, but the dot without the "i" made me feel as though it had been inadvertently missed off - a bit visually distracting

#59 giant - not too late, and thanks for the submission. I couldn't really get what the image was though I'm afraid - or not quickly enough to work for a logo

#60 skyvee, thanks, this was really cheerful, and captures some of the human dimension of writing as well as the writing instrument - well done

I'm going to review these all today - ahead of the decision 24 hours from now. It's going to be hard I know, and thanks everyone for the ideas and design work that's gone in to this.

Best wishes

Hello everyone

Thanks very much for your ideas and contributions - I've learned a lot from it, and it's not been easy to work out which design option to go with.

However, today's the closing date so I've reviewed the submissions... and the one I'm going for is...

Carol Taldo - based on her version 5, post #40

I guess the key factors for me were that it was clear, simple and easy to read - attributes that I love to see within confident writing.

Thanks Carol and I look forward to finalising the project with you
