We are looking for a designer to assist with the cover design for a book that we are looking to publish within the next few months. The book will be hardcover with a protective sleeve over it. We are expecting the book to be about 5.5" x 8.5".
We are in the financial services industry so the cover graphic would have to be somewhat simple and conservative, yet eye-catching. The book is being targeted towards business owners who are thinking about retirement and "exiting" their businesses.
We especially like the cover of a book titled "The Dip" by Seth Godin. It is simple yet shows the frustration of not knowing when to quit something. This is similar to the idea of a business owner trying to decide to sell or leave his business after years of nurturing and growing it.
The front cover should include the working title, which is "The ART of Exiting a Business" with some kind of graphic and the back should include some text about the book and a picture of the author with a brief bio.

I know I'm early, and there's still more information to come [especially for the back of the book], but I wanted to get an idea down right away and also find out exactly where the line is in regards to "conservative, yet eye-catching." So please let me know if I've strayed too far from that first part.
Do you have the author's name, or publishing company logo?
Thanks,
Jeremy

I assume that you will be posting text for the back page along with bio pic? Will there be text or images used on the inside flaps? Do you know the width of the spine?

Hi there,
The author's name is John Leonetti. I have attached a head shot below. There will be text on the back and inside flaps but for now we are focusing on just a cover design so that we can pre-sell online.
More info to come but we definitely appreciate the cover designs!!!
Thanks!!

Jeremy,
We like the design that you submitted. Its definitely eye catching yet simple.
But the "Sorry We're Closed" image may give readers the wrong idea of what the book is about. The book is really about business owners have multiple options when they are thinking of leaving their business - closing the business is just one option. They can transfer to children or managers, an employee stock ownership plan, gift parts to charity, etc.
Maybe another image would convey this message better.
Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for submitting additional designs. We really like the original design you did however with the blue and black on top.
The only issue was the photo underneath. We liked that is was a black and white photo but we just don't like the idea that is conveys.
Can you keep the format the same as your first design but just find another photo to replace the "Closed" sign. Something maybe with alittle more white in it to brighten up the cover.
Thanks!

Hi Shima,
Thanks for designing those covers. We like your ideas with the images showing that a retiring business owner has a lot of options but we need the cover to be a little more delicate - this book is supposed to catch the attention of retirees. The font is too blocky and solid. If you look at the 1st design that Jeremy provided, we really like the blue, white, and black he used in the title and subtitle. We actually would like to keep that the way it is. But we need some other image that captures what we are trying to say.
Hope this feedback helps. We look forward to seeing more.

Thanks Jeremy!
I think the idea we were looking for with the image was something that conveys a feeling of retirement...maybe a black&white photo of a hammock, or fishing, or something along those lines.
Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,
These are definitely going in the right direction.
Please take a look at the cover of a book titled "The 4-Hour Workweek" by Timothy Ferriss. We like the way his name is across the bottom. You could do this with John's name so that the center of the book is just concentrated on the image.
And for the image for the center of the book, we like the idea of hammock and fishing but maybe we could do something that coveys a "before and after"...maybe the left side could show a business owner behind a desk and it fades or crosses into an image on the right hand side of a hammock, etc.
Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for that design. We appreciate all the hard work that you have put in. You are our first choice because of the great work you have done. We like the colors you have chosen and the overall feel.
After seeing your most recent design though, i think we want to go back to our original idea of something much simpler. I mentioned in my first post that we really liked a book titled "The Dip" by Seth Godin. It is simple yet shows the frustration of not knowing when to quit something. This is similar to the idea of a business owner trying to decide to sell or leave his business after years of nurturing and growing it.
Can you keep everything the way it is except for the 2 images in the middle and replace with something simple..maybe a stick figure or something showing success like being on top of a mountain?
We want simple...almost elegant...
Hope this helps
Look forward to seeing more designs!

Hi Alternatura,
We love the design that you came up with. Can you work on some of these changes though:
1. Can you remove the $ signs in the title and use a more standard font.
2. We like the blue across the bottom...Can we see what it looks like with the same kind of bar across the top...with the title in white.
3. Can you change the stick figure to where he is in a thinking pose with a question mark on top of his head?
We look forward to seeing your work.
Thanks,
Holly

Thanks for the quick reply.
Can you look at the top design of the book that Jeremy did for us? We liked how he had the blue tilted and we liked his use of color and font. The font you chose for the title is too bubbly. We need conservative.
And for the stick figure, can we try seeing what it looks like standing up, thinking, with the question mark?
Thanks!

Please note that every designer has his own concept, even if I were allowed I wouldn't copy somebody else's design.
JH is a fellow colleague, if you think that you want to continue working with him on the concept he'd provided, please announce him the winner.
Just not to be misunderstood, this is not the matter of vanity but respect for other peoples work, hope you agree,
Thanks

Hi Alternatura,
Sorry we have not been in touch for a while.
We are going to go with the most recent revision that you did for us. The only thing we'd like to change back is the stick figure. Can you put him back the way he was - sitting on the edge with the question mark?
Thanks!

Hi Again.
Can you also edit the subtitle text. We would now like it to say:
For business owners who are thinking about an exit from their business
Thanks!
