Would you like to be a part of something kinda fun? Sense of humor and adventure is required!

We're looking to create a comic character that we can animate using some standard flash animation tools. The website isn't developed yet.

Basically, this is just plain old illustration (so far as I can tell-- I'm no illustrator myself) but with one small twist in that we need several mouths and slight facial variations that the lipsync software can use to mimic the character talking.

Whatever we create should be compatible with this system:
http://www.lipsync.eu

The specs for the extra facial movements are here:
http://lipsync.eu/makeSet.php?face=2

The documentation there is pretty straightforward, I think.

Here is a description of the character. (Engage sense of humor now.)

Paki is a 21 year old Pakistani native who lives in the USA, where he moved at age 12. He is somewhat misogynistic, and fancies himself as an expert with women.

You, being a good person, probably wouldn't like Paki.

Why? Because he's quite obnoxious, a little conceited, yet stands only 5'3" tall, black hair, brown eyes, and is very dark-skinned. He was raised Hindu but is not necessarily observant.

Paki loves himself. Some women even love Paki and flock to him. Other women hate him. And most men don't like him because they are jealous of his unexpected and surprising success with women. (That's why Paki calls himself a "pick up artist".) Either that, or they just think he's a jerk.

I had originally thought he'd look very traditional (turban, traditional suit, etc) but we've come to think that he now revels in being in America and loves all things American.

I came across this image at another lipsync website that seemed oddly appropriate, but my guess is that a professional artist like you could do better.

http://www.downloadfiles.biz/paki/notpaki.jpg

So you can see he's got a baseball cap turned sideways. The real Paki might also have gold chains (I can't bring myself to use the term "bling"), and a turned up collar. What else is he wearing? How else does he look? You tell me.

We're very impressed with the creativity of the artists here at DesignOutpost, so we're thrilled to see what you can come up with.

We'd like to have the project complete before Thanksgiving, and we'll be very active with replies and comments to your work.

We have no specific color preferences for the artwork.
This is a work-for-hire, and we'd retain all rights to the character, and be able to use him in any way whatsover (I think this part is covered in the DO terms, though). When the project is done, of course, we'd like the source files for the illustration. However, The winner of this bid would likely be engaged for follow up work on this and other projects.

Thank You.

-Paki

I'm not sure if I can get a graphic into a comment or not, but here's a character of similar demeanor and attitude.

If that image tag doesn't work, here is the URL.

I like the art style and the way his attitude is captured in the drawing.
Can't wait to see what you come up with!

just a couple of questions...
you are looking for a flash file, right?
you said you need "several mouths and slight facial variations"... can you tell us how many of them?
thanks,

caro :D

Hi Paki,

Welcome to DO.

First question: Do you need a whole body, portrait, or face only of the character?

I can present to you my illustration idea with the final source file in EPS vector format. Someone should animate it.
For different lipsync and eyes positions (as if he's talking to you) can be done for additional fair amount of not less than $50 depends on the numbers. We can negotiate about that with other designers who would like to enter.

Looking forward for your reply.

Thank you.

Hi Caro.
Glad to hear you're in. I like your work.
No, I'm not looking for a flash file. It's much simpler than that. Everything is explained here much better than I can explain it to you:
http://lipsync.eu/lipsync/manual.php
But in a nutshell, we need PNG (or JPG) files. That lipsync website puts them together and generates the animation.
I think it takes 8 main mouth positions, plus some transitions. But so far as you're concerned, they are all static variations of the basic character. Mosty just different mouth shapes.
I'd like the vector source when we're done, too, so we can resize, etc.
Does that help?

Hi Rongen,
Looking forward to your work, too!
I think what we need is from the arms up. I guess you'd call it a bust. The idea is that we'll be creating animations using the lipsync software. I don't think it does arm movements, so what we're planning on right now is to animate just the head. We may do some custom flash to move the arms, too. So, at this point it'd be helpful to at least know what they look like.
Later, if things go well with the designer we pick, we'll likely do more work -- full body, situations, etc.
EPS would be great, though we'd like PNG that we can put directly into lipsync.
So again, you don't have to do any animation. Just design the character, and a few extra mouths (and maybe an eyebrow raised, etc).
I hope that helps.

Hi Mark, Here's my initial Paki. Please let me know if I got his look right.

Hello Rongen.
Thank you for contributing.
Paki needs to be obviously ethnic. Maybe I'm not seeing it because it's a pencil drawing, but he looks like a good looking waspy american teenager. Maybe the high school quarterback.
I'm not really sure how to make him more ethnic, but maybe looking at some photos of Indian and Pakistani people might help.
I do know this...Paki has very dark skin. Black hair (if you can see it at all). Brown eyes. He wouldn't be classically handsome -- his attractiveness comes from his confidence, and likely nowhere else.
For attitude, take a look at http://www.RichJerk.com.
If Paki is smiling it's because he's conceited and pompous, full of himself. And happy about that, too! But he probably doesn't smile very much when he walks into a club or party and feels like the center of attention.
If you can just make the Rich Jerk look more Pakistani (whatever that means), then we'd have something.
I wrote in my original description that Paki is more casual and hip-hop-ish, but I may be okay with Paki dressing in a leisure suit. I guess it depends on how it's drawn.
In any case, I like the artistic style of Rich Jerk, even if Paki doesn't end up resembling him.
Does that help?
-Paki (No, not the real Paki...I just play one on the Internet)

Thanks for the comment and direction.
Here are just quick-rough bitmap rendering, the final ofcourse will be in smooth, fine vector.

Hi Titiana,
Sorry for the delay in commenting. I was away for the holiday and had a very poor internet connection.
You do nice work, and I really appreciate the time you put in to create a finished piece of art. I'm just not keen on this particular style. I'd like something a bit more realistic, and his single-curved head and jaw just don't seem right to me. I wish I were more experienced in artistic styles to tell you more. Maybe my other comments will help you.

Hello again Rongen
Thanks so much for continuing to work on this. It's very hard for me to really 'get it' about what a finished product would look like for these four new sketches. Still...I'll do my best here:
1) Paki is only 21, so he wouldn't have a beard shadow, which #1 appears to have.
2) Doesn't seem very smart. Eyes are a bit droopy. He doesn't look very pakistani.
3) Looks a bit too young. Not very "worldly" or experienced.
4) Probably the best of the four. I like the smaller mouth. Would prefer to see his eyes, though. This one is starting to resemble the sample image I added to my original post. However, he doesn't look very Pakistani, and I don't think he'd have his hair parted in the center.

So here's what I'm thinking...
I really do like the original art sample I gave you. So much about that image appeals to me, but we just can't use that image for copyright reasons (I think). But if we could use that as a starting point, I think we might get close quick.
You'll notice in that image, he's wearing a scarf below his baseball hat. I wonder if we can give him a turban under there instead. You see, Paki still remembers very well what things were like in his homeland, but he's very much into everything American right now.

I hope that all helps. I'm hoping we can finish this soon, as our site was supposed to go up this week.

Thanks for your great work.
