Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?

"Beard Head" or "beard head"

What type of product or service do you offer?

We're going to sell a novelty cap/mask for cold weather that has a beard and mustache attached. Since a picture says a thousand words...

http://www.pokerbling.com/beardhead.jpg

How long have you been in business?

Just starting up.

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?

We're looking to create a fun, playful brand identity that will immediately appeal to our audience (discussed below).

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?

December 14, 2007

Audience Profile:
Please describe your audience:

We will initially target snowboarders and skiers as well as snow sports retailers. We will then move on to cold weather sports enthusiasts with team mascots that look similar to our beard head (vikings for instance). Age group can be children to adults. Anyone that has a sense of humor looking for a fun, jokey, yet functional product.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?

We're looking for something clean and fun with Swedish, Norweigan, Icelandic tones. Winter/cold weather could also be incorporated into the design (could be done using colors). Cute is fine.

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)

Light blues, white, tan (similar to the color of the beard pictured). This will be a cold weather product, so cool colors would be ideal. The tan can serve as contrast.

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?

Something with a beard or "beard head" would make sense. However, I couldn't really come up with anything that looked right myself, so perhaps that isn't the best idea. I'll leave it to the professionals (you guys). Cold weather/snow-related imagery may also work well.

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?

Fun, quirky, modern...possibly endearingly dorky if you can pull it off. ;)

What is your tagline or slogan?

Can't say we have one at this point. We can leave it out for now.

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?

Our company is professional, but still knows how to have a good time.

Where will your new logo be used?

Website, letterhead, sales materials, business cards, sell sheets, possibly on the product itself (tags).

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?

No one really doing exactly what we're doing on the level we're doing it (it's a pretty unique product), but I suppose you could compare any of the apparel brands that make cold weather headgear as a competitor. For the most part, their logos are actionsports-oriented. We're going for more of a fun novelty look.

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:

Fun.

Thanks,

David

Thanks for the first crack at it!

Comments:

1) Can I see something in color?
2) The bearded guy looks a little off-center because of the angle his face is at. Perhaps you can try a different variation with him looking forward.
3) The background in the circle is a little too busy. The pattern on the Beard Head is too busy too...I think it would be distracting and may not come out well if the logo were smaller.
4) I'm digging the general layout of the logo with the circle and text below.
5) Can you try a different font? Maybe something more "fun" or "cute".
6) Could you try to make the Beard Head guy a little more cartoony? I think the logo needs to be a little more "fun" overall.

Not bad for a first try. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.

Thanks,

David

Logoholik,

Thank you for your initial entries.

Comments:

1) I'm not really digging Version 1 at all.
2) Version 2 and 3 are interesting, but I think I would like to see a beard image incorporated into the design more.
3) The half snowflake is a little confusing. When cut in half, it looks more like a bush or a tree or something...
4) I like the color scheme of Version 3 more.
5) I assume the crescent shape underneath the text is supposed to represent a beard. It is a little unclear. I think the best way to represent the beard would be to also include the mustache.

Overall I don't think this is the right direction. We need more focus on the beard/mustache aspect and less on the snow. Valient effort for a first try! Please keep it up!

Thanks,

David

Here's a look from me.

freetime,

I like the direction you've taken.

Comments:

1) Can you choose a lighter shade of blue and maybe a more tan color for the yellow? The colors are a little too stark. I'd like to convey a sense of "cold" in the logo.
2) I think you did a good job on the cartoon face, but I would like to see something slightly "cuter". He's a little ugly (purposely, I know) =)
3) Perhaps the amount of detail in the face could be taken down a notch. I'd like the logo to be very "clean"...I'm thinking of a vibe similar of IKEA or a lot of Swedish design products that seem to be all the rage these days.
4) Maybe a snowymountain background would be better than a circle?
5) I'm not sure why, but I don't care much for the font. Can you try something different?

So far I think your logo is the farthest along. You've done a good job so far, but I'd like to see a few improvements. Great job!

- David

Thanks for the new submissions. Sorry for the delay in responding, but I will be traveling over the next week and may not be able to immediately make comments on the logos. I hope to at least log in to check on the contest twice a day though.

Bill:

1) I don't really like the mascot's look here. The dark bushy eyebrows makes him look a little mean.
2) Not sure I like the font for the next. I think it needs something a little more playful.

Overall it is all right, but I don't think it's what we're looking for.

freetime

1) I know I said your previous nose was too big and a little ugly, but now that I've seen what a smaller version would look like, perhaps you were right the first time.
2)I like the closed eyes from your first version more than the open ones.
3) I like the mountains on the circle part.
4) I think your first version was sized better than your second.

Shnickerdoodle Studios (Deanna)

1) Interesting approach. I wouldn't say you made it very cute, clean or playful, but I do kinda like the end result. You may have something there...
2) I like the overall format, but the text below needs a big fix. I don't think that's the right font, and perhaps you can stick it on a banner of some sort.
3) I think your logo could end up looking like some old-school official seal sorta thing. I'd say run with that. Some sort of old Norwegian/Icelandic thing.

Thanks,

David

freetime,

Thanks for the new revisions. While your design isn't a slam dunk for us at the moment, I can't think of anything I would change about it. As of right now, we like your logo best, but there are still 11 more days for more submissions.

We'll try to leave more feedback later, once we figure out what to say. =)

Could you add a ".com" to the bottom part of the text area? I think we will use the ".com" for our website logo.

Also, could you try using the color: #D2A43A for your "tan"?

Thanks,

David

Deanna,

Thanks for the new revision.

1) Do you think you could try making the beard head guy facing straight forward?
2) The non-mountain top snow is a little distracting. Could you perhaps clean it up a little? Seems a little busy, especially in black and white.
3) I'm not sure I like the shape you have at the ends of the banners. It looks a little bit like a hand with a pointer finger pointing down. I would go with something more classic...just a simple split square shape. It's hard for me to describe, but if you took a square and removed an isosceles triangle from the side, that's what I'm thinking.

Thanks,

David

Thanks for the new submissions everyone.

freetime:

I like the side view for yours more. Could you do a version without the "unibrow" for the guy? It's a little unattractive.

Deanna:

I think I prefer the side view for yours as well. Since you've taken a different direction with your logo, I think the design should not be cute/fun as stated in the project description. What I'm looking for from your design is something like an old-timey official looking seal of sorts. Something that expresses the Norway or Iceland of old.

Thanks,

David

Deanna:

I'd take out the sun from behind the mountains. Also, I think the snow between the mountains and the man's shoulders should be a little more mountain and a little less snow.

Could you also add a ".com" somewhere to the image?

freetime:

I like the new version with the ".com". Can you add some small thatches to the beard cap so it looks less like a blob of "goo" and more like something that has been knit?

Also, can you please try using the font "Brady Bunch" available for download at www.fontfreak.com. We've been using that font for portions of our Web site and I'd like to see how it looks on your logo.

General:

I think these two designs represent a good mix of the fun/cute/clean vs. an old-timey Norweigan/Icelandic design. We still have quite a few days left in the contest for more submissions, so I will continue to accept logos.

While I'm happy with the very different directions of both logos, I don't think either are perfect quite yet. Don't get me wrong, I think everyone has done a great job and freetime's logo in particular seems very good. It's just none have jumped out at me as the perfect look yet.

At the conclusion of the contest, I will present all the logo submissions to our partners and we will decided which one we will select. I'm glad we have some major differences in design at this point, so we can review contrasting looks. I'd love to see even more from the designoutpost community!

Thanks,

David

I was thinking of something hand-drawn...maybe a few thatches near the head and on the beard. Nothing too extensive...not as much as you have now.

I've talked it over with the rest of the crew and we've decided that "freetime" is the winner of the logo contest! Thank you all for the time and effort you put in to your submissions. Ultimately, we felt freetime's design was the most polished and delivered the right message.

Freetime, I don't think we have many tweaks to the logo aside from some color issues. If you could change the colors to the following:

tan = #CAB336
dark blue = #2A537F
light blue = #B4C9E4

You can email me the finals at: david.stankunas@gmail.com. The more formats you have it in, the better.

Thanks,

David

Quick questions, where are you wanting to use the light blue in the design? I've only used one blue throughout so I was just wondering. Also, what would you like to do about the skin color? Thanks!

freetime,

Light blue is the background of our site...sorry about that. =) You probably don't need to worry about that.

Could you also have a version with the "thatches" on the beard-cap a darker tan and also try with the dark blue? I like the white, but I'd like to see it in a different color that may be easier to see as well.

The skin color is fine the way you have it.

Thanks!

Attached are those revisions. Letter C is with a darker color on the thatching. My only concern with that is it's adding a 4th color for printing purposes. Letters A and B are 3 color. Let me know what you think.
