(Admin code added by Palmer - 7JU63818J4133683D, 8WF81596357616251 )
I need a one page (8.5 x 11) menu for the Mockingbird Cafe. The menu will attach to a clipboard and the customer will fill it out at the table...similar to a sushi restaurant. It should be oriented vertically, unless space is an issue.
Bounty: $250
Proof due: Friday, Dec 7
Here's what we're after...
http://www.thecounterburger.com/photoGallery/displayPhoto.php?id=33&width=361&height=330
http://www.thecounterburger.com/images/complete_menu.gif
Attached you will find...
1. The Menu (Word format)
2. 2 Sample Menus for design style (pdf)
3. 2 versions of our logo (pdf)
There will eventually be three versions of the menu...MORNING, DAY, NIGHT.
This project is only for the NIGHT menu, but I would like a logo representing each time of day (perhaps a sunrise, full sun and a moon...or just the word in text. see also reginellis attachments, i like the hand drawn pizza pie logo). Perhaps we can have all three logos on the top of the page, with the current time-of-day logo accented in some way. I'd like to use the same to designer to develop the other two menus, via separate projects in the near future.
You will also find our logo attached, which can be used in your design as well.
The menu should be very similar to the attached menu sample. It should have check boxes. If you can fit a spot for qty, that would be cool too to see as well. For example, I may want 3 burgers and 2 pizzas.
In terms of design style...I am interesting in any style, but our cafe is very much vintage/modern in style (you can see the place here http://www.mockingbirdcafe.com).
I like the vintage school house look...hand sketches, kraft paper, rubber stamps, chalkboards, rulers (as seen here http://fiveandten.com/index.html).
The menu can incorporate 1 or 2 colors, but I also want it to reproduce well in black and white.
Thank you and please feel free to chime in if I can clarify anything.

I am working on your menu...this is the direction I'm going:)
This will work in 2/or one color(the logo would have to be changed) please let me know if on track as to what you wanted..Thanks:)

here is a variation with a 'stamp' on kraft (frenchpaper).....would easily work with black only

Just a note that the whole menu has to fit on a single page.
The qty boxes are not required, as long as there are check boxes.

oops, I will repost, half of my page got cut off (when I converted your.doc to a illustrator file)

I'd love to see some vintage versions, as well as the modern style to matches "the counter" menu.
Typewriter font, or handwritten, or chalk.
Thanks!

tini,
The latest version is looking great.
A few quick thoughts.
- Try using the MockingbirdBW logo as a watermark instead
- I'm liking the look of the tab for time of day. Can we see it as a sidebar, and across the top as well (make the address/phone/website go along the side).
Thanks!
Designers: look forward to other submissions as well! :D

tini,
Can we see the menu with the other mockingbird black and white logo as a watermark? Just one watermark in the middle, not two like the current version.
Also, can we see the menu with check boxes and with a two column layout, like the left side of samplemenu1.pdf.
Finally, can you change the color to white.
Thanks!
tini1
12-06-2007, 11:00 AM
:)....do you mean the prices aligned? Thanks
TulaneJeff
12-06-2007, 11:05 AM
Actually, I wanted to see the content aligned in two columns. For example, rather than having burgers and pizza span two columns, they would start in the left column and then carry over.
Take and look at "samplemenu1" and you'll see how the categories are aligned. If spacing is an issue, let me know.
Also, I think we can eliminate the qty box and just have one check box.

it fits...I also added the special instruction area..:)

tini,
The layout is looking good.
Can we try a few different styles of the header and the side distressing?
Also, maybe add a hand drawn checkmark and handwriting that says "check off your favorites to order".
At the bottom, I think we can move up the beverage section and make the logo at the bottom a tad bigger. Increase the craft beer font size a bit as well.
Also, move special instructions up to the top line to make more room for notes.
Thanks!

tini,
I'd rather not mess with our logo.
I really just wanted to see different ways the NIGHT tab header can look, as well as the distressing you had on the right side.
The logo was fine at the bottom.
I'm just not sure the bold black across the top flows fits in with the rest of the design. If you have any other ideas, I'd love to see them. :)
Also, the check box should be square to match the others by 'check off your favorite'. Can we try some other handwritten fonts too.
Thanks.

I still think the header is too formal. First off, let's lose the address and other details. Then we can try something like this...
http://www.juansflyingburrito.com/images/header.gif
Or the stamp or chalk designs here...
http://www.fiveandten.com/events.html
Can we add a pen inked or sketched moon to the top left? Sort of like the reginellis pie slice.
For the 'check off your favorite', maybe we can lose the checkbox and add a chalk arrow pointed down to the first empty box. Also, the handwriting font I'd like to be more free form.

Thanks so much!

Admin: Can we go ahead and award this project to tini.
tini,
The latest version looks good. I will have the final menu for you tomorrow (just a few small tweaks). I like the new night and moon layout. I may want to see some more fonts and change the distressing behind it a bit...but we can talk about that tomorrow in the revisions forum.
Thank you!

Hi Missy,
So sorry for the delay. Have been swamped with work.
Since we last talked, there have been many changes to the menu (probably best to recopy and paste all new menu items and descriptions).
Most notably I think we'll need to make two pages (front and back). I'll gladly pay any extra for this modification.
There is no "day" and "night"...we've merged everything into one single menu. So you can remove night from the top and just make a Mockingbird Cafe header.
The front should have starters, salads, deli sandwiches, paninis and beverages.
The back should have burgers and pizzas.
Please see attached word document and let me know if you have any questions.

Missy,
Looks great. Just a few thoughts.
I'd like to change the header to describe our ordering process.
It should look like this...
1. check to order. >> 2. get your number. >> 3. eat and enjoy. <Mockingbird Logo>
Details...
1. make the arrow and font look more like the attachement (hand drawn)
2. make a round number like this... http://images.theknot.com/blimages/P1887_wl.jpg
Also...
- Change San Pellegrino water to "Smart Water"
- Align boxes on the burger section
- Delete "White" pizza
- Change Blue Cheese burger description to "gorgonzola crumbles"

Can we bump up the font size of the header items so it's a bit more prominent and rotate the items counterclockwise?
Also, drop some of the words down a line so it's more natural and not all horizontal. (so it matches the style of the "kitchen table" and "join us at the food bar")
Can we add a square box with a check in it to item no. 1, so all three numbers have images to correspond?
Rotate the "3" circle to make it look more like an object.
Hope this all makes sense!

Perfect!
- Under deli sandwiches...should read Boar's Head brand
- Move Mockingbird watermark down a tad.
- Remove double watermark on the second page.
- under the jalepeno cream cheese burger...change the word sliced to "fresh"
TulaneJeff
02-19-2008, 11:57 AM
Also, just saw that the tops of the left and right columns need aligning.
- Move deli sandwiches down
- Move brick oven pizzas up
Also, I think we need to darken the fonts. The menu items descriptions are very light.
Can we make the menu items and description match this in terms of boldness...
http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=95303&stc=1&d=1196817999
The category headers might need to increase in size as a result...starters, deli, burgers, etc.
TulaneJeff
02-19-2008, 12:16 PM
Also, for the no. 3 circle on item 2 in the header.
Can we make it a white circle (black outline), with "#" instead of 3.
- Last sentence under Mockingburgers...should read "All Mockingburgers"...plural.
- Change Mockingbird Soup to "Soup of the Bay"...with a description of "our daily soup"

Can we bold the menu item names, so they still stand out like before?
The text is more readable this way though.
All other changes look wonderful. We're in the final stretch! Thank you!
- Capitalize "Bread" in Serious Bread under Antiposto.
- Change House Coffee to "Bay St. Louis Blend Coffee"
- Remove periods on the salad descriptions
- On the Texas burger, change the comma "," to a +
- under pizza add $2...add "fresh jalapeņo" and "grilled pineapple"
- under add $2, make red peppers singular "roasted red pepper"
- make mushrooms "mushroom"

To make the menu items stand out I have 2 suggestions..
1. descriptions in grey
shown here.....(I use this on my restaurants menus, works really well UNLESS, you have dim lites AND use a colored paper, then it may be hard to read)

I think option 1 with the grey will work well for us.
Can we add one more thing, then I think we're all done!
Near the special instructions part...add a larger round empty circle, where we can write their number inside. It needs to be large enough to fit a 2 digit number.
Also, add the handwriting font with an arrow pointing to the circle with the words "table number."
