Hi everyone. Another photographer wanting a logo! I also need a business card designed using the same design.

Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?

John Harris Photography

What type of product or service do you offer?

I am a newly qualified wedding photographer but want to be able to move into other areas in the future (portraits, landscapes etc)

How long have you been in business?

Just started

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?

I need to build up a client base from scratch. Although I am doing weddings part time at the moment I want to show that I am professional and competent.

What are your long term goals?

To build a photography business that I can make a good living from & leave my current job.

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?

No great rush but would suggest mid Jan as a good starting point given the Christmas period coming up

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience

N/A as only just started but want to concentrate on mid to high end weddings where customer service/image is paramount.

Who would you like to add to your audience?

As above

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?

Must be modern, clean, fairly simple and not too masculine

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)

Am completely open to suggestions as I am building a brand/image from scratch. I have seem some nice images on the site using rich plum colours with black and others using a sort of olive green and black but please don't feel constrained by these colours

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?

No.

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?

Creative but also very professional

What is your tagline or slogan?

None

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?

That I am a capable, creative, professional photographer who keeps up with the changing trends in the industry and who will be able to advise and help clients as well as produce the goods

Where will your new logo be used?

Website, Blog, Letterhead, Business card, Watermark

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?

There are a lot of old, established but ultimately very traditional photogrpahers in my area. I want my brand image to
stand out as modern and fresh as most of their designs look dated.

List competitive URLs if possible

N/A

What sets you apart from your competitors?

See answer re competitors

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:

Competent, fresh and professional

Additional Information:

The logo is to be used for my website. This is not yet set up but will be based on the following template:

http://www.bigfolio.com/samples/edna/main.php

In addition to the logo, I would also like a business card designed. It should incorporate the new logo and also have the following entries for contact details: Mobile, Email & Web. I would like these to be really modern and probably printed on glossy paper so a good background design would be appreciated. They will not contain any pictures.

Thanks in advance.
John

xpressions, thanks for the posting. Of the four that you have offered, I like the first two the best but I would still like to see more flowing/softer lines. They all strike me a being a little 'hard' at the moment.

I also find the colours a little drab, especially the brown version. Hope that helps.

Jennifer, these aren't really doing it for me - the 'JH' bit seems a bit scrappy and I'm not mad on the combination of colours. Of the two, I think the second works the best as I think the lower case 'john' with the bolder 'harris' works better than the first one with the uppercase 'JOHN'.

I loved your dandelion logo for Ever After Pictures. I know I didn't request any particular images be included in my logo but if you can suggest anything that might fit please feel free to include it. I'll have a think on the way in to work to see if I can come up with anything!

Regards
John

Can you think of anything that would set you apart from your competitors or of a specific feeling you want to evoke?

The dandelion tied in with the fairy tale/magic aspect of Ever After, so if you can give me some direction on what 'message' you want to send I will certainly have another go at it. The "fresh and modern" is a style that any image I do can be rendered in; what I need (and the other designers need) is the substance of the message (if that makes sense).

Jennifer, sorry if I'm making things hard for you guys by being a bit vague but I currently have limited experience in the wedding photography market so I'm still finding my feet when it comes to defining a message.

I think in most cases the bride will have more influence over booking a photographer than the groom which is why I want to steer away from anything too masculine and maybe look to something that evokes memories/happy feelings/relaxation etc. I don't want to go with any icon that concentrates too much on weddings however (like rings or hearts) as I would like to branch out in the future into portraits etc and would want to use the same logo for everything.

In terms of the way I work, I concentrate heavily on providing excellent customer service but I'm not sure it's possible to convey this in a logo (tell me if I'm wrong!).

I thought the dandelion image was good as it seems to suggest (to me anyway) a feeling of summer, warmth, relaxation and happy kids whilst still being a strong graphical element in its own right. Other images could possibly include abstract sunsets, fluffy clouds, tall grass, beaches etc etc.

I have to confess, when I first submitted my request I hadn't really thought of having a recognisable image as part of the logo but I'm quite keen on the idea now. Having said that, if those same feelings of happy memories & relaxation etc can be achieved via an abstract design I'd still be keen to see them.

I hope this helps

John

Offbeat, thanks. Still not quite what I'm after. Of the two I prefer the second one although I'm not sure the circular 'j' works for me. I would also like the colours to be a little stronger - I don't really like pastels.

Thanks

Guetizo, thanks for the new logo. I know I stressed that I didn't want the logo to be too masculine but at the same time, I don't want it to be too feminine either. The last few submissions have all been very feminine (apologies if I have given the impression that this is what I want).

I am looking for a more 'neutral' & clean look. If it helps, of the ideas submitted so far, xpressions 'tilted box' is my front-runner.

If I've ended up confusing things even further - please let me know :(

"J" and "H" combined to make unique symbol - not too feminine, not too masculine...

Guys, some nice stuff coming through here now - I like all of the last three postings. My only concern on the first two would be with the height of the logo. Given the fact that it is to be used on a website & business cards I'm not sure if it would be more convenient/usable if the image was more oblong than square. Just a thought. Keep them coming please!

Thanks for all the ideas people. I'm going to go with Taldo as my final designer. Taldo, I will need some minor tweaks to your penultimate design but I guess I can discuss that with you once this post has been moved to the revisions forum.

Hi, I want to use your logo with the drop shadow on the 'JH' (message no. 20) but would like to emphasise the shadow a little more than it is at the moment as I think it addds a nice warm summer evening feel to the image (can it be added to the black and white version too?)

I would also like to either put some more space between my first and last name or capitalise the J & the H so that the words on the black and white version don't run together quite so much.

It would be great to see a few colour variations. I like the deep red but would just be curious to see how it works in a few other colours.

Would it be possible to provide two logos one with the icon on top and one with it to the left (sorry if this is starting to take the p*ss!). I think the longer version would work well on the website but I prefer the original version for the business cards.

Many thanks

John

Hi John. Sorry for the late reply. I didn't get an email notification that you responded to the thread. Here are some color choices. Let me know what you think. I made the shadow darker. Once you choose the color, I will send you a horizontal and vertical logo. I can also do one in grayscale that would be black and white with the shadow.

Thanks,
Carol :)

Carol, thanks for these. I still think the original red colour looks the best so I will stick with it. If possible, could you make the shadow a little darker still.

I would like the vertical logo to be incorporated into a business card. I am thinking of getting them printed in colour on one side only. It should contain the following information:

web: johnharrisphotography.co.uk
email: enquiries@johnharrisphotography.co.uk
phone: 07870 593 589

(not sure if the 'web', 'phone' etc should be actual text or an icon - I think an icon might be cleaner).

Can you let me have some ideas of layouts & backgrounds - nothing too fancy just something that is clean and easy to read whilst looking classy

Thanks
John
