Two dentist practice looking to reinvent office. 10,000 square foot new office under construction, will be moving in April 08. Existing building is old / out dated / downright ugly. New building is state-of-the-art / technologically advanced / very classy looking. I want new logo to appear on roadside sign, letterhead, and in the new office behind the front desk there is a large stone wall that will be the perfect place for large scale logo (wall is 8'high x 10'wide). The name of our business is Knowlton & McFall Dentistry PLLC (I'm Dr. Knowlton). My business partner and I were thinking a logo that incorporated our names "KMD", but we're not married to this idea. (Our logo now is just a canned logo that the city / chamber of commerce uses in all of their promotional work...we want to separate ourselves from that.)

Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Maybe just initials / probably no text
What type of product or service do you offer?
comprehensive / complete / thorough / caring dentistry
How long have you been in business?
8 years for me / 30 years for Dr. M
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
fresh start with new office / give us a classier look
What are your long term goals?
continue to expand / hire another dentist / be most thorough dentists around
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
1/3/08

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
suburbanites / mostly treating the entire family
Who would you like to add to your audience?
more high brow (pt's that can afford the treatment we desire to give)
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
simple and classic looking not too intricate
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
probably black (why? decor in the new office is deep/rich dental chairs will be black / staff scrubs are khaki and black / black will stand out against the tan stonework of the wall and signage)
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
no teeth :)
Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
classy / thorough
What is your tagline or slogan?
right now it's "caring dentistry for adults and children" this may change too (tips to those who come up with new slogan too :)
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
we're thorough and knowledgable, and we care
Where will your new logo be used?
letterhead / sign / behind receptionist desk on stone wall
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
small town / 4 other dentists in town, but they are all old school / I dont consider them competition especially with our new facility on the way
List competitive URLs if possible

What sets you apart from your competitors?
Im the youngest DDS in town (34)my partner is the next youngest, and he's (55) the other 4 are in their 60's and probably wont be working for to much longer
Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
classy

I'm envisioning a black/raised/metallic logo, circular or square, (less bulky/blocky with "softer" lines) above our name on that khaki/stone slab streetside sign.

better...I'd like it if logo could stand alone though (without the necessary presence of the written name underneath)

Can you clarify that? If you want to use "KMD" then I would assume it will be necessary in all situations to clarify what it represents.

If you mean can be KMD be used apart from the rest of the logo, yes, it can be.

Just want to make sure what you mean before I revise.

I WAS asking if KMD could be used apart from rest of logo...thanks for response. There will be situations where I will want to use the main part of the logo without stating "Knowlton & McFall Dentistry" underneath. Therefore, I was hoping for something a little more artsy with the "K" and "M" carrying different weight than the "D". (If KMD was displayed on a doorfront, I don't want people to say..."I know Dr. Knowlton, and Dr. McFall, but who is Dr.D?" This might sound stupid, but I hope it makes sense.)

Makes perfect sense.

Will post a revision soon.

"I know Dr. Knowlton, and Dr. McFall, but who is Dr.D?"

Haha :D Very illustrative explanation :)
My revision coming too. Thank you.

Hi,
Here is mine. Thank you.

I seem to like the writing better underneath the logo than on the side. I do like the different "D's" in RED and RELEVANT's designs. Anybody willing to try something more square or circular (less rectangular)?

I like Red's design, wish it had a little more life/curves just a touch less blocky. Font of under-writing too could be more fluid. I like "&" not "+". Also, I'd like to see larger font for "Knowlton & McFall", and smaller font for "Dentistry". I want "Knowlton & McFall" to outweigh "Dentistry".

How about "K&M" as the main part of the logo without the "D". I like the design and font DEWA. (Dr. McFall may take offense to the smaller "M" :)

K&M is definitive better solution:

Relevant,
I think I'm dropping the "D" in the logo. Let's stick w/ "K & M".

drkooldds
12-19-2007, 06:57 PM
Red, I really like your latest design (version 04). I like bold "K&M", let's make "Knowlton & McFall" font more fancy, then make "dentistry" bold again. I think you're on to something.

Logoholic,
I'm sticking to black and white. I did want to see someone submit some circular or ovate designs. The slanted "&" is a little quirky to me.

J Johnson, I really like your version 2. Any other similar ideas?

Hi,

I am sorry but us designers are prohibited to reply or communicate with the contest holder during the contest. In any case, thank you for the feedback and I am looking forward to your next.

As you requested, here is something with a much bolder but similar font for K&M.

Please advise if I interpreted the feedback correctly or if by "bolder" you meant a bold sans-serif font. I also changed the & symbol as the thinner version wll not match with the bold "M". Thank you.

Best regards,
Red

:) hi

After 2 weeks of thought/consideration/discussion my business partner and I have decided on working with Carol Taldo to finish the design of our logo. We had such great entries from everyone. I thank you all for submitting such good work... I don't know how you guys do it. I will definitely tell all of my colleagues about design outpost...keep up the good work.

Carol,
I'm kinda doing all the computer stuff, but when it comes down to actual decisions, my business partner and I are trying to make the logo choices together. So...be patient with us. We really liked your design because it is very classy. We will ask you for a couple revisions. One thing that we liked about a previous design (message #4 by J.Johnson) are the lines to either side of "Knowlton & McFall". Can you show us what this would look like on either side of "Knowlton & McFall"? Also, can you show us another set of lines on either side of "Dentistry" and not on the sides of "Knowlton & McFall"? Oh, and by the way, you forgot the "T" in "Dentistry" (which didn't affect our final decision:)
