Hi guys,

Having received very good response on my previous projects, I turn to you yet again to provide me with a great web site template for a company I recently co-founded.

PRIZE: $ 200
DEADLINE: 2003-10-14

Translations of Norwegian names and terms are provided in parantheses throughout this post.

SPECIAL REQUESTS

I’ve received several contributions for past contests which haven’t followed the guidelines that I’ve described in my original post. So I ask that you please read this post carefully and encapsulate all the guidelines in your contributions.

Also, if you have the time, I think you would benefit from browsing through my previous template contests to get a basic overview of my likes and dislikes. Here are links to my two previous template contests:

http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=555&hl=
http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showt...wtopic=1157&hl= (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=1157&hl=)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The company for which you will be providing the web site template contribution, is called “MittFirma”, (MyCompany), and will be providing easy-to-use software for small companies. The company tag-line is “enkle verktøy for små bedrifter” (easy tools for small companies).

TARGET AUDIENCE

The target audience is small businesses with limited IT knowledge. It’s therefore very important that the products don’t come across intimidating. The design should convey userfriendliness over all.

PRODUCTS

We are starting out with the following products:

MittKontor (MyOffice)
Et komplett økonomisystem for PC som håndterer faktura, regnskap, kontakter, rapporter, m.m.
(A complete office-solution for PC which handles invoices, accounting, contacts, reports and so forth.)

MittNettsted (MyWebSite)
Et kraftig, nettbasert verktøy for enkel administrasjon av nettsted og nettbutikk.
(A powerful, web-based tool for easy administration of your web site and web shop.)

ELEMENTS

The following sketch illustrates the desired placement of the elements that should be included on the main page.

<img src='http://www.netmaking.no/mf/placement_of_elements.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

Element details are outlined below.

Logo
The logo should be placed in the upper, left corner, and space available to the right of the logo should be used for a header.

JPG version
<img src='http://www.netmaking.no/mf/mittfirma_logo.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

EPS version (http://www.netmaking.no/mf/mittfirma_logo.eps)

Search
Consisting of a text field and a submit button. The text field is not labeled. The submit button is labeled “Søk” (Search).

Menu
The menu consists of the following options:

Produkter (Products)
Demonstrasjon (Demonstration)
Artikler (Articles)
Forum (Forum)
Referanser (References)
Hjelp (Help)
Bestill (Order)
Om oss (About us)
Kontakt oss (Contact us)

Also, please include the following two sub menu options under “Produkter” (Products):

MittKontor (MyOffice)
MittNettsted (MyWebSite)

Newsletter subscription
Consisting of two text fields and a submit button. The text fields are labeled “Navn” (Name) and “E-post” (Email). The submit button is labeled ”Send” (Send).

Product presentations
A short, separate presentation of each of the two main products, “MittKontor” and “MittNettsted”. The presentation should include a short text describing each product (use the Norwegian text descriptions near the top of this post), a graphical representation of the product (screen shot or software box are prefered) and three links/buttons. The links/buttons should be labeled “Mer info” (More info), “Demo” (Demo) and “Bestill” (Order).

Most recent articles
A list of the 2-3 the most recently published articles. Each listing should include the article title, publishing date and, if there’s enough room, a short description.
Most recent forum posts
A list of the 5 of the most recently published forum posts. Each listing should include the post title and publishing date. Accompanying icon if appropriate.

COLOURS

Preferably orange, blue, grey (and black and white, of course).

SIMILAR SITES

http://www.interspire.com/
Though targeted toward a much more techinal audience, I really like the Interspire.com web site, and I think a similar look would work for us. I especially like the graphical product presentations presented at the top of the site, and I’m looking for something similar for our own product presentations.

We also like the following templates which we fell have a look that could suit the site.

http://www.templatemonster.com/show.php?te...rg2=&order=date (http://www.templatemonster.com/show.php?templ=2317&cat_type=cat&type=1&arg1=6&arg2=&order=date)

COMPETING COMPANIES

Though none of these web sites are escpecially well designed, they are included here for the sake of presenting competing companies.

http://www.mamut.com/
The provider of the best selling Norwegian CRM, web and economy solutions.

http://www.kontorplassen.no/
Web-based system for economy, CRM and finance.

http://www.avendo.no/
Economy system for small businesses.

SCREEN RESOLUTION

The templates should be designed to be stretchable across any screen resolution, with 800x600 as the minimum.

Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any further questions, and the best of luck !

Hi all,

Please note that some changes have been made to the inital guidelines. The changes concern the elements (the log in box should be removed and the logo/header area extended) and similar sites which now includes several templates that we like.

Looking forward to your contributions !

Hi! Eirik,

I've just noticed your requirement about the resolution.

In order to stretch the layout across any screen resolution, we need to use relative values (percentage) rather than absolute values in HTML tables. I'm usually comfortable working with absolute values. So, is it alright if the layout is designed primarily to fit 800 * 600? The majority of users have either 800 * 600 or 1024 * 768. And, I often find layouts coded using absolute values don't matter much in usability.

Thank you,

T Ragu

Hi all,

Please note that we have changed the placement of the search box to below the menu.

[...]The majority of users have either 800 * 600 or 1024 * 768. [...]

That might be true for some sites, but only 10% of the visitors to my own web site use a 800x600 resolution and over 20% use a screen resolution that's over 1024x768. And who knows how the numbers will be for this new site we're developing. Screen resolutions can vary greatly depening on the target audience.

Als, for those of us using a 1600x1200 and a large font for instance, the text columns would be very very narrow and hard to read on a site designed for 800x600. And I don't see the point in not adopting to the user when possible.

Don't worry too much about the HTML template however, as I'll probably have to do some tweaking there myself. The main point is that the contributions should be designed with a stretchable view in mind.

In your netmaking.no contest, you wanted just the final PSD. Is this the same here, or do you want the template cut up into HTML as well?

A PSD will be fine.

marengo,

Great! I'll be looking forward to your entry.

pod,

Welcome to the contest, and thanks for providing the first contribution. Here are my thoughts on improvements.

1. Your contribution does not follow all the initial guidelines concerning element placement. The newsletter

subscription box should be below the menu, and so should the search box (as of fairly recently, though). Please see the elements placement sketch in my initial post.

2. The menu is a bit dull. It might be the grey color, it might be the fact that there's not enough spacing between the menu elements, or that they do not look like menu elements at all but rather a list of words. Perhaps some further separation or associated menu icons would be helpful. In any case, something must be done here.

3. Our products are, as mentioned, targeted towards small companies, so it's very important that we don't come across as intimidating. I feel that the picture you have chosen is just about casual enough (though it might be even more casual), but why is the resolution so poor?

4. The sections that are supposed to represent lists of recent articles and forums posts just look like a bunch of text. They need more separation and emphasis on the important elements like the title instead of the date. Also, it seems like you've included two article sections instead of one.

5. Regarding the search box, the text "Søk" (Search) should be after the text field, and in the form of a clickable button.

6. In general, the design is too grey which makes it feel rather sad. I think replacing some greys with a color, or perhaps just removing the grey tone alltogether someplaces, would brighten up the design.

7. The product presentations need to stand out more than they currently do.

I hope these thoughts are enough for you to do a revision of your contribtion. Looking forward to it, and please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Hi exo,

Picture 1 is a nice picture, but I doubt that any of our small company clients will be working in such buildings.

Picture 2 is better as includes what seems like regular people in a regular working environment. However, it's hard to tell the exact quality of the picture it is so small. Also, I'm afraid that including more than one person in the picture might appeal to medium-sized businesses rather than small ones. Lastly, I don't see how our products is making their life any easier.

Picture 3 is too clip-art and dressed up.

The reason why pod's picture appeals to me is that it tells a story. The man in the picture seems happy having just saved several hours using our software. Also, though he's sitting next to a computer, he's not facing it. This tells me that though the computer isn't what he wants to be spending his time on, our software makes it easier to be around them.

Furtermore, he's casually dressed which most of the people in small companies are.

Though the picture might not tell the same story to others, it has a story potential, and it's important that the pictures used in our design have a similar potential. Stay away from the clip-art, dressed up, high-tech pictures, and you should be fine.

Hi guys,

I'm Eiriks' partner on this project.

pod,

I think you're off to a very good start! We want this site to "speak" directly to the visitor like from one entrepreneur to another and your choice of main picture accomplishes just that.

I think the logo is much too small relative to the main picture though. Also, to strengthen the one-to-one dialog, I think it would be a good idea to add a headline in quotes (putting headlines in quotes has proven to make them more memorable to the reader) as though the person on the picture is really speaking to the visitor. The headline could be "Nå kan du/jeg også drive eget firma!" ("Now you/I too can run a company!"). In general, I also think you're using too small type in the text areas.

Here's an idea of what I envision for the page header:

<img src='http://www.ajour.no/mittfirma/header.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

pod,

That's great, but let's wait until we've decided on a winner.

marengo,

Thanks for throwing your first contribution into the mix. I really like it! Here are my thoughts on improvements.

1. Please expand the search text field to the left, remove the “Søk” label and replace the “Go” button with a button labeled “Søk” in the same style as the newsletter “Send” button.

2. To get a feel of whether or not your rearranging of elements work, please include some dummy content for recent posts and articles.

3. Please replace the headings “News:Letter” with “Nyhetsbrev”, “Recently published: Forum posts” with “Forum innlegg” and “Recently published: Articles” with “Artikler”.

4. Though your template looks great, I’m afraid that the sub pages might look a little pale as they would loose the large, orange picture field. Perhaps you could extend the watermark behind the “Nå kan du også drive eget firma!” text to the menu to maintain the “spicy feeling” on the other pages as well.

5. I like the product boxes, but they need to look a little more like two different products. The product names don’t separate them enough.

6. Please include the prices on both products which is “fra kr 195 pr mnd” (from NOK 195 pr month).

7. Please include the following info below the bottom bar:

© MittFirma AS - Nedre gate 8 - 0551 OSLO | Tlf: 22 71 95 98 - Fax: 22 71 95 98 | Org. nr.:885 832 792 MVA

8. The emtpy space to the right of the logo needs to be used for something useful, preferably sales-related.

Try to include a section with a heading, a body, a text field and a submit button. The heading should be “Trenger du hjelp?” (Do you need help?), the body “Ring oss på 22 71 95 97 eller tast inn ditt telefonnummer så ringer vi deg opp.” (Call us on 22 71 95 97 or provide your phone number and we will call you back.), and the submit button labeled “Send”.

9. Please include the following body text for the newsletter subscription box: “Gratis, månedlig nyhetsbrev med tips om hvordan du kan drive ditt eget firma enklere og mer effektivt.” Also, please include two links labeled “Personvern” (Privacy) and “Siste utgave” (Previous issue) in the subscription box (perhaps to the left of the “Send” button).

That’s it from me. Really looking forward to your revision!

Sure.

On your revision in general, I feel that the colors you are using are a bit cold and sad. Also, I find the use of both rounded and square grey shapes for the background to make the layout a little confusing.

marengo,

Intreresting idea on the sub page headers. However, they take up way too much space needed for content. It might look OK if we decreased the height drastically (to about the same height as the text on the headers), but I still think I liked my idea better :), meaning extending the watermark to the menu background.

I'm not sure I understand well your idea. Do you mean something like this:

Yes, that was my original idea. However, now that I see it, I can see that it is a little too much. The watermark would either have to be paler, or perhaps a shadow effect added to the menu options to make them more visible.

Though I haven’t gotten feedback from Vidar on this yet, I belive that we will be needing a log in box after all, meaning a section that displays the username when the user is logged in, and log in text fields when he’s/she’s not.

What if the log in section was a top, orange bar on every page? Here’s what I’m thinking:

When not logged in:
<img src='http://www.netmaking.no/mf/bar_suggestion_1.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

When logged in:
<img src='http://www.netmaking.no/mf/bar_suggestion_2.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

These would call for same changes to the front page, of course (perhaps making the header a little lower to make room for the log in box on top, or maybe it would be better below the existing header…)

pod,

I agree with Eiriks' general remarks regarding the kind of sad colors. We want a bright, smiling, welcoming look! :D

marengo,

I think your design is superb and only needs a little more tweaking to be almost perfect!

Needed tweakings:

1) The main headline (to the left of the main picture) is a little too outstanding and the two lines should be unaligned to avoid the boxy kind of feeling there is to it now. I also think it would be a good idea to start the sentence in lower case to resemble the same effect from the main logo, like this: "nå: kan du også drive eget firma!". This also contributes to an overall more softer feeling.

2) The free space to the right of the main logo should be used for something sales related, like promoting our affiliate program.

3) Product headings/logos should start in lower case, to resemble the main logo.

4) Product boxes should have a sharper orange color and a lower titleline: "Økonomisystem" and "Nettsted og nettbutikk".

5) Several button captions need to change (see picture below).

6) The article column need to be widended to make room for more text on the main page. This is to enable the reader to get a better grasp of what each article is all about without forcing him to leave the main page.

7) Hence, the product column has to be narrowed as much.

8) Logo on T-shirt should be refitted! :P

I still prefer Arial Rounded to plain Arial as font for the headline, though. It will make for a rounder, softer feeling, I think.

Hi all,

Now to something that maybe is a bit late to bring to the competition table: :o

We have decided to let each product have its' own mitt-domain, in addition to the top domain mittfirma.no. So far we have registered among others

mittkontor.no
mittnettsted.no
mittnettverk.no (MyNetwork - affiliate program)

Each product should have a logo similar to mitt:Firma, but set in a different color and with a unique icon for each.

To illustrate how we think, I have yet again made a quick and dirty cut and paste with your design, marengo: ;)

To make each product domain quickly accessible from the menu area, I have moved the seek box to the bottom of the page and replaced it with shortcut icons to each subdomain. On the pages of each subdomain, this is replaced by a backlink to the top domain, mittfirma.no. Also, colors indicate if objects are global or local to the particular subdomain:

<img src='http://www.ajour.no/mittfirma/marengo3.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

Main page of subdomain mittNettverk.no:

tragu,

Thanks for your first contribution, which is very good (uncluttered and simple). Here are some thoughts to making it better.

1. Your contribution lacks a lot of the newer elements that we have decided to add during the contest. These include the newsletter description, links to privacy policy and the previous issue, the product prices, the info displayed in the bottom bar and the “Trenger du hjelp?” section. It would be great if you could incorporate these, just to see if they’ll fit.

2. There’s too much grey in the design. Could you remove some of the greys and perhaps replace it with another color?

pod,

Your last revision is definetly brighter, which is a good thing. However, I feel that it also has a little too much orange, and that the darkest shade is too red. In addition, I would like to see some more spacing overall to separate (first and foremost between the sections), and the headings font changed. Lastly, the “Info”, “Demo” and “Bestill” buttons associated with the products need to be bigger.

elements,

Looking forward to your entry!

All,

Please hold on the latest edits suggested by Vidar (regarding the separate templates for each product) as we will have to discuss details around this before we proceed.

Yes, we have now concluded that we'll need seperate templates for each subdomain/product which uses the product logo as main logo, and has a backlink to mittfirma.no, as indicated in my example template above. [/b][/quote]
Sorry, you can't change the requirements in the middle of the contest. All of these designers entered this contest with the understanding of providing 1 page for $200. If you want additional pages you will have to pay the designer to create those after the contest has ended.

Please refer to the following announcement that defines what a templates is...

Thank you

martin,

I'm afraid it does. We could extend the dead line, but I don't think that would be fair to the other designers. We will accept submissions until 24:00 GMT, and then select a winner in the morning.

Hi all,

First of all I would like to thank all of you who have participated in our contest. Though I've run a few contests here in the past, this contest has probably received the best feedback and contributions so far. You just keep getting better, guys, so keep it up!

Though there can be only one winner, I would like to commend you all on your contributions.

pod,
Thanks for starting of the contest with a contribution that set the bar high. Though I feel you caught the mean idea of the site, there was something that didn't end up quite right. Still a very good design, though.

tragu,
I really liked your contribution for its clean and uncluttered layout. Still, there was something lacking from making you go all the way to the top. However, since I'm not able to put my finger on it, I guess it is understood that you contribution was very good. :)

elements,
Though your contribution came in somewhat late, it sure was a great one! Had it only been me making the decision in this contest, I would have had a really hard time deciding between your contribution and the winning one. But I'm not, and in conjunction with my partner we came to the conclusion that we liked the winning contribution better. Still, kudos on a great piece of work !

marengo,
I liked your first contribution right from the start, and with the adjustments made along the way, I now think it's as close to perfect as you can get. That's also the reason why you are the winner of this contest!

Please provide me (eirik[at]netmaking[dot]no) with the design in a layered PSD file, a high-res copy of the picture (if you have it) and any unstandarized fonts you might have used. Thanks in advance.

Until our next contest, thanks, and so long to you all !
