TACS is 30 year old nonprofit wanting a new look.
Project Summary:
TACS is celebrating its 30th anniversary in March 2008. The organization would like to take advantage of the timing of this celebration to introduce a new look and logo. This statement of work is for a new logo design.
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
TACS
Supporting nonprofit success since 1977
Should also have an option without the tagline
What type of product or service do you offer?
TACS is a nonprofit organization that serves people who believe in the power of nonprofits to transform lives and communities. TACS helps nonprofit board, volunteers and staff get the resources and skills they need to achieve their goals. TACS offers a wide range of management and capacity-building consulting and training services to the nonprofit community in the Northwest, provides resources and information, and offers a way for people to learn about nonprofits in their communities. TACS is in contact with 8000 nonprofit leaders monthly. It’s the only organization in the Northwest that provides the “one-stop shop” for nonprofit needs.
How long have you been in business?
30 years
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
We want to be attractive to a broad range of nonprofits, foundations, civic leaders, and donors in Oregon. We want a new look to take us through the next 30 or so. We need to reach the “next generation” of nonprofit leaders (a younger audience) without isolating our core group (50+). We want to look professional but still approachable to grassroots organizations, friendly, welcoming and current.
We want to show a clear connection between TACS and two large projects we are doing that each have their own name, and own logo – they are the Nonprofit Association of Oregon (NAO) (more information on this can be found at www.ORnonprofits.org) and Oregon Involved, www.OregonInvolved.org We will need the new TACS logo to work well visually with these logos(see links to these two logos below) – we have control over all logos colors can be adjusted and some elements. However, we hope to keep the basic look for these two items..
What are your long term goals?
We are a vital resource for the nonprofit community and we want to remain so. We want to continue to evolve and be ahead of trends so we can provide relevant and timely assistance to nonprofits. We value diversity in our clients and our staff and want to be relevant to all types and sizes of community-based nonprofits.
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
January 4, 2008
Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
TACS’ average demographic is a 50-something white woman who works for a nonprofit and may also sit on one or more nonprofit boards.
Who would you like to add to your audience?
TACS’ would like to extend its relevance to a younger, more diverse demographic while not alienating the organization’s traditional base of supporters who by age and experience are among the most influential players in Oregon’s nonprofit community. TACS wants to be accessible to all nonprofits and a diverse range of people of varying backgrounds.
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
It needs to be flexible for multiple online and print uses and look good in black and white. We want the logo to be memorable and relevant to our organization. We do not want something that is graphically beautiful but hard to read – both the word TACS and the tag line must be easily read by older viewers (remember our 50 year demographic) – while saying this, we also want something that looks interesting, attracts a younger client, and is less institutional than what we have now.
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
We’d like the new TACS logo to be compatible with Oregon Involved and the Nonprofit Association of Oregon logos referenced above. In terms of colors for the TACS logo, we’re open but have used a particular green and red combination recently (see these colors below). Also, it is very important that the logo look crisp and attractive in a black and white version since we reproduce multiple copies of the logo in black and white..
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
A designer may want to incorporate some of the imagery from our current logo (www.tacs.org). It has been around for 30 years and has significant brand equity. This is not a requirement, though. If it is possible to achieve the objectives described here while retaining something of the current look – we think that would be strongest – we particularly like the use of the ying yang-type symbol that is located at the center right side of the current TACS logo.

For additional information on TACS, please see the website www.tacs.org. Please keep in mind that we are going through a website overhaul which will reflect our new look, logo and voice. The current site feels too clinical, is too busy, and does not reflect the real warmth of its people and those it serves.
