(Admin code added by Palmer - 912763W)

:help: Hello All! $150.00 for a new logo for my Dog Training Business. 3 week deadline Oct 22, 03 (2 variations might be needed)

My Business name is:
DogStar Training Systems

Please note DogStar is one word with the S also being uppercase.
I tend to like Times New Roman or something similar for the font of the business name. Currently used on my letterhead and business cards.

I want a combination of a star (5 points) with a dog headshot over-laying it, blended into it etc... On a round back ground. (Think the Star and Stripes logo on the wing of a miltary aircraft.)

My thinking is a bright, darkish blue for the DogStar lettering, maybe a soft slightly greyish blue for back ground. Dog head in black and white or dark brown and white.

Lettering could be whole business name or maybe just DogStar.

Red, fire engine red to blood red, could be an accent color.

Imagine this as a website logo, an embroidered hat and an embroidered logo on above a shirt pocket, as well as in larger version which potentially could even be done as a vinyl cutout for part of a vehicle sign.

Since one version is only about 2 inches in size and the largest is maybe close to 2 feet, I can see the smaller version maybe have to be a simpler version of the main design.

My business has two saying associated with it.

"Dedicated to making the best of your best friend."
(This is currently on my busienss cards, letterhead and website

and

"Make the best of your best friend...
...Train your dog!"

Perhaps one of these could be involved in the larger version. Think red accent color as a line in smaller logo and has saying in larger one... Maybe? :P

Finally for now, the dog head I want illustration, not too cartooney. I do not like "cute" too much. I prefer something clean and professional yet fun and inviting. I am a relaxed sort of person.

Please look at the headshot of my own dog a Pittie mix, (looks a bit like Petey from the Little Rascals) she might make for a good dog model. In the final product I would want her looking slightly to her left from dead ahead. In the photo she is looking far to her right.

http://www.DogStarTrainingSystems.com

Then click on Mascots page, for a picture of Braveheart. My website will also give you a more complete idea of me and my business, if that is of help to you.

I hope this is enough and not too much to get some things started. I will look in daily and I am VERY pleased about finding you all. Any questions PLEASE post.

Thanks you VERY MUCH for your consideration in this project. Others will come from this one!

Eric/DogStar

Excellent start Bill.

I was seeing the star filling more of the circle and the dog being more defined.
Keep in mind one use with be in emroidered threads so something like the dog head would need more definition. The star could even flow beyond the circle?

Additionally the name DogStar should likely be all in one color, the blue and maybe the blue background a contrasting/lighter blue, blue-gray? And that would allow for a larger star to flow with the background blue?

I am placing in ? because these are only additional ideas of my original vision. I am SO confident that you and others will develop and improve my vision.

Thanks. The dog is too cartooney. I wen the illustrationjs to be more lifelike in form. Not extremeley so, some caricaturing might be good, but not this much.

Also the dog will need to face to his left, our right.

Getting excited about this!

And boy oh boy do I know dozens and dozens of people needeing logo work. Since many of them are dog related professionals I am not turning them onto this resource UNTIL my DogStar logo is finished! ;)

Thanks again,

Thanks for comments.

I changed the dog and used a photo reference for the head. Also, we see the right side of the head now.

Much better! I like the overall dog head shape, it is closer to my own dog and the angle and direction is more what I was thinking of. And it is more 'life like'.

Can I ask you to try somethings with the third one?

Try changing the DogStar Font to a New Times Roman (or variation) Make it the darker blue. Change the background a little lighter.

Then take the saying and make that in a strong red color.

And what would happen to locate the other eye as an eye?

Thanks for the interest. I have a very long day tomorrow so I will not be able to offer people much feed back, maybe tomorrow evening, if not, then Saturday.

I am hoping that a bunch of others will chime in with other directions of the theme and if you have something different to offer as well I would be interested. Still thinking something with a larger Star that the dogs head is coming 'out of'? (Just ideas...)

This third one and the first idea given by Bill are the most "correct' so far in my mind.

A LOT of talent here! (Great biz/site Palmer, heard you on David Lawrence Show.)

Hope everyone is safe and well.
Thanks,
Eric

New Times Roman is already the font in my letterhead and Biz cards so a variation of that might be good.

As per the others I want more realism in the dog and more of a 'slender' Pit Bull type head. See my dog's head in my website URL below, under Mascots. And the overall shape should be round, or at least round for the most part.

The things I replied to the others apply here as well.

THANKS for broadening the field!

Hi Bill,

Okay lets tweak that one. This is closer to my own original sketch but it is getting too complicated, just like my sketch.

DogStar looks good, The star and circle are getting close. The collar with star tag are anice idea IF the overall final product doesn't look too busy. If it does we might chuck the collar.

Try this, increase the circle to allow for the star to just fit in it, maybe with just a hint of circle beyond the star points.

Remove the extra read ring. Keep the word DogStar much like it is this way the circle and the word will be of cimilar overall width, meaning icrease the circle not decreas the star.

The try adding in the sentence sort of inplace of the extra red ring add in the original saying "Dedicated to making the best of your best friend!" And have that loop around the top and sides of the blue circle as a border using the font in RED. Much like the red line now does, using upper and lower case.

Then I could see in my smallest version the red is a line and not letttering.

Get back to a dog head somewhere inbetween your first and this. (Pointer types aren't my favorites.) More on the bull breeds, Pittie breed, etc. KalvinHobbs most recent dog head is more what I am looking for but it doesn't have to be just a silhoutte. But that pose is more what I want. Kind of like the dog is looking at us.

I will try to get online tomorrow morning before work, but I am out all day... I can't wait to see what ya' all come up with. I will get back online tomorrow late in the day at the latest.

With deep appreciation,

Bill,

Thanks definately better.
Not meaning to sound wish-washy...

I like the Pit Bull look but I don't want it TOO pit Bull indentifiable. And I really need him facing slightly to his left. Just a touch of profile.

We need to keep in mind how this will look large for truck signage and very small for embroidered on a shirt above a pocket.

Like I mentioned I am outta here for the day.

But I will be back... too!

Hello All!

This contest as a great start, I wanted to mention a few things.

1.) I am not married to my original ideas/information except that I need a dog head and a star involved.

2.) Business name is DogStar Training Systems so that might be used in full instead of just DogStar (Or possibly not at all.) Truth is the business name is already on the truck so 'maybe' I just need a visual logo?

3.) If anyone else has ideas, even far outside of the box, PLEASE feel free to offer them up. This contest runs until 10/22 and if others want to offer ideas I will not be making a selection until at least very near that date.

Thanks all!

Eric and Braveheart, the nearly always sleeping Pittie

I am going to ATTEMPT to place ina photo of my dog, Braveheart with a decent head angle on it. The photo might be a little dark. If her head could be turned into a line illustration for the logo I am thinking I would like that. (Added:) It did work! Woo Hoo! She is a cutie... ain't she?

Off for the day now, back later.

KalvinHobbs , this picture will show you how much your latest white silouhette looks like my girl.

Bill, this shows a more lean Pit Bull look and a bit more of an 'approachable' to the public, look than a more traditional Pit Bull. She is a it leaner andl longer on the head and muzzle, which softens her look.

Additonally my Pittie is well known locally and having her 'representation' in the logo could be a good thing.

Hope this is helpful! :P

Eric the Dog Trainer!

P.S. Input from others? I was looking thorugh past contest and I have seen a lot of dog related stuiff by many people all of it good to great.

Hello again folks!

Sorry for the delay. I have been none stop for the past few days. But I wanted to give you an update. I have printed out most of these and I am going to get some input from other 'dog' people including a training apprentice of mine.

I will be back here within 24 hours to give you all some final thoughts on the most recent versions with a little more tweaking.

If anyone esle has some ideas please throw at me now, I would want to be able to give you a chance or two to make some changes before I make a selection. We do have up to 2 weeks before I will make a selction if we need that much time. From the beginning I kinda figured not everyone can get online and have time to do spec work on a moments notice. Hence my allowing a 3 week time span.

So thanks again for the ideas, more would be great, and I will be back tomorrow, sometime, with some notes on these and maybe some thoughts an any new ideas/offerings.

With great respect,

Kimber/Crebor!

Can I ask you to do me a favor. :D Swap the dog and the star. Dog on left of circle othyer ear going beyond the circle and the star on the right side, also going outside the circle and larger. Part of it can be behind the dog's head.

Finally for now, make her jaw line thinner, her jaw is actually where her lower lip is, the lines you have are actually skin folds of her neck. So just 'thin' out her jaw about 2/3 if you get my meaning.

She isn't has heavy as you have her looking but it sure looks like her. I like this a lot!

Hello Everyone,

I will try to touch on each persons works to date. In many cases previous comments also still hold and since the range of what I am looking for is as defined as it is everyone can use all the comments as well.

Pennyln,
The first Pit Bull was certainly better but the position wasn't correct, the intrepretation of my Pit doesn't work and the composition has suffered.

Kalvinhobs,
I still like your more cartoon like dog intrepretation and my critique still holds if you would like to try a fruther tweak.

Coredesign,
I like you basic concept. The wording doesn't need to wrap all around and the dot inbetween everyword makes it hard to read. Addtionally the heavy outline on the pit head is too distracting. This might work better without outlines and just contrasting colors/shades.

Cre8or,
I am liking this a lot. The thining of the jaw has worked but it is now too "bumpy". Just smooth it out a little. The star is too overwhelming and could be a little smaller, and maybe a touch lower???

Dynagirl,
Too cute and I don't like cute (too much). But I like what you are doing. I am leaning more towards your second version.

To everyone, as I mentioned previuously I am no longer concerned with having the business name DogStar (Training Systems) as apart of the logo, so it might be worth not considering that at this point. It is all too distracting. I am also liking thed dog and the star positioning beyond the 'central' frame.

Keep in mind this needs to translate in many cases to a simpler version for embroidered logos. On shirts it might be less than 2 inches diameter.

The extra legth of collar dangling could be removed in all cases.

In many a little simplification would help.

At this point I will let you know I am most interested in Cre8or, Kalvinhobs, and dynagirls submissions. While two are cartoony I find them very attractive in concept and Cre8or with a most real look for Braveheart and layout etc I really like as well.

I all cases a little tweaking and a little 'simplifying' should be enough for me to make a final decision.

Can I ask a"protocol" question?
Do we have to have a submission tweaked to final useage before I announce my selection, or can I choose and then finally tweak things just right? Want to be sure I am playing by OutPost rules!

Thank you all! VERY much. If anyone has any new inspirations it is never too late, or at least not often!

IMPORTANT UPDATE DOGSTAR CONTEST

I am getting a new truck. This one will be a dark metalic green, my old truck is red. I think the logo colors need to be changed. (I tried to get another red truck but end of the year models, I was limited in color selction. )

It could just be a hue issue. Perhaps what is blue could become medium green and what is red could become blue. Black, white and grays remain.

I am also NOT opposed to other color ideas. :P

Thanks,

Dynagirl!
This is real good and real close.
A couple of real little tweaks.

1. Change the colors, red to blue, blue to med deep green.
2. Can you try a diffgerent font New Time Roman (maybe bold) but done like you have outlined in white and black. If bold is too thick, forget the bold for the inner letters.
3. Finally my long sleeved cotton shirts are black, so the logo needs to be surrounded by a light color, what about the outer black line around most of the circle and much of the star being yellow?
4. Make the 'wisker' lines a little shorter (?)

Cre8or!

Definately closer. It also looks good reduced. Get rid of the saying around the edge. Not wanting to be a pain but...

1. Look at the eye in the previous drawing it is a little more peaked at the top, not so almond shaped, I like that MUCH better, it is her eye.
2. In your color variation take the first one but make the collar blue. Also trim down the collar a bit narrower again like one illustration back, and even get rid of the o-rings etc.
3. Bring the DogStar down to the lower edge hiding a bit of her lower chest.
4. Make her chest 'Y' smaller
5. Remove the gray from the top of her nose.
6. Finally try to get somewhere inbetween her current jaw and the original jaw that was to thick/fat. Just trim that out and not try for much detail.
Finally we have the same issue of needing a light edge to it so it shows up on dark shirts.

A bit more in general, remember a large version will be done in vinyl for truck doors, appx 16 inch tall. A small one will be for shirts and hats embroidered. Shirt about 1.5 inches hats about 2 inches, and final version will be a small gif for a website logo using 'websafe" colors. The last two are identical in they are small and the truck one is large. So things need to translate well.

I appreciate all the time everyone is putting in and most especially these last two most frequent designers working on these tweaks.

I am feeling REALLY good about all this. Lets see these, perhaps, nearly final changes and I will make a decision. UNLESS of course any last minute entries want to get in. But I gotta be honest and say that Cre8or and Dynagirl will both be hard to beat at this point. Going to be NEAR impossible to make a final decision between them. :(

They are so much alike, and yet so different, and both are very much what I was envisioning!!!

Lets get this wrapped up, so I can save up some more bucks :D and come back for some more design work!

Stay well and safe everyone,
Eric aka DogStar

In addition to the changes you asked for, I made some other adjustments. I can always backtrack, though, if you don't like what I did. Also, colors are easily changed, so if this green, for example, isn't exactly what you had in mind, it's no problem to switch it.

Here are some product samples to give oyu an idea of what the design would look like on a hat or t-shirt:

For use on a black background, I actually think dropping the outer border and having the white become the outer border works well (see below). Yellow sort of gets lost next to the white, but I posted a sample with yellow and some alternate choices further below.

RYAN!

Talk about throwing a wrench into the works. GREAT stuff. Really appreciate the new idea. Any chance you can get the truck in a crew cab, with cap and a 2003???

JUST KIDDING! It looks great though. Now my job is getting even harder.

The only thing I can think of is to change the font of 'DogStar' to New Times since I have pretty well decided to lock on that since it has always been the font on letterhead for DogStar TS.

Dynagirl,

Talk about tweaked! You have really pulled the whole design together. It has gone from kinda 'cute' to really well thought out and it is growing on me by the minute.

Exact colors will be dealt with once a winner is chosen since even colors on the web/monitors is a variable. It is interesting because the dark gray and black on the eye are pretty well indistinguishable on my monitor but does show up when I print out a sample. But again I don't even mind the fact that the dark side just looks dark.

I also think you might be right about the white outline. Now we have a potential problem with her dark ear getting lost where it moves out of the circle... BUT the more I look at it the more I even like that, it sort of makes it different and I like "different".

Your product samples are great as well.

With you and Ryan putting 'entries' on the products really makes it all look 'sexy'!

More thanks to both of you, I will wait to hear back from Cre8or as well. Make it a great day and stay safe and well,

Eric/DogStar and Braveheart whose head is swelling by the minute.

Hi All,

This wasn't easy and I have ended up where I would not have thought of in the beginning of all of this. :P

Bottom line: DynaGirl (Tonya) ends up with the money. Kaching!

Of all the entries as tweaks were made and my changes interpreted, Dynagirl did the best job.

As I said in the beggining, I am not really into too much cute, and she took her original cute submission and bit by bit made in better and better. To end up with something that while sort of on the cute side and therefor attractive to the consumer/public, it also looks clean and professional and while not a direct representation of the model, Braveheart, it is at the same time OBVIOUSLY her.

Thank you to EVERYONE that helped along the way and Cre8or I can't thank you enough for all the input you offered. It was really a toss up between these two.

So now Plamer will pass the money along to Tonya and I will expect Tonya will contact me directly for last minute tweaks and to help me learn how to get 'copies'. etc...

Additionally, now that my 'contest' is closed and close to done I am going to pass this site on to the hundreds of other trainers I know online and off, and I know over the next time period there will be more trainers and other dog pros coming for logo and design work. (I moderate a number of online dog/training discussion groups. And have some level of influence... Ahem...)

Thanks again everyone and thanks Palmer for helping me out along the way. Hope I wasn't TOO much of a pain in the...

Stay well and safe all,

Eric (DogStar) and Braveheart
