View Full Version : Newsletter Masthead Design - $100
(Admin code added by Palmer - 8638605)
PRIZE: $100
DEADLINE: Friday, October 10, 2003 (one week - or sooner if the right one comes along!)
Project: Masthead for "The Driving Force" newsletter for the Automotive Service Association of Missouri / Kansas.
Audience: This is a not-for-profit association designed to help owners of automotive service facilities (both mechanical and collision). This association provides management and technical training, legislative information, as well as benefits for industry owners and their employees. Members are independent service facility owners - not car dealerships.
Design: Final design size is 11" x 17" to be folded down to 8-1/2" x 11" and tabbed closed to be mailed. Must use the ASA logo (logo attached) with the words "Missouri / Kansas" underneath the logo. Also include "The Driving Force" newsletter name in the design. The design needs to reflect the professionalism of the automotive service industry as well as the changing technology of today's new cars. Any individuals in pictures must be professional (no "grease monkeys"). Prefer that we stay away from any certain makes or models of cars being primarily identifiable in the pictures.
This masthead will be used as the outside shell of the association's monthly publications, with one maybe two articles being placed on the front page. Also inserted on the masthead each month will be the month and year (I.e. October 2003). (Would like to see your recommendations for placement of articles & month).
Two websites to familiarize yourself with the client: www.asamokan.org and www.visionkc.com (got their 2004 theme logo from designoutpost last week!)
Colors: Full color
Other Design Layout Criteria:
Left half must leave room for a 1/2 page ad by an industry supplier.
Left half must leave room at the bottom for return address and addressee info (4" wide and 1-1/2" tall)
File Format: winner must provide artwork in EPS format.
Future project: I am also needing a 2-color design for a 6" x 9" catalog envelope, as well as a 9"x12" flat envelope for this client. Depending upon response to this project, I hope to post the envelope project soon.

Hello,
Is there a logo attached to your message, or can I find it on the websites?
Do you have an example of a masthead or newsletter so I could see exactly what you want?
Thank you for understanding.
Gilles.
Here is the logo attached. I will scan the current masthead and attach on Monday.

Hello :)
Here's the frontpage of the newsletter. With your permission, I draw the logo again as a vector file, so you can resize it as much as you want without losing quality. In the meantime, I'm working on the back page. (the photos and texts will be empty, so you can fill them with what you need).
Best regards,
Gilles. :)
Thanks for the submission! I would like the focus to be more on "The Driving Force" name and to leave a bit more room for articles/text. Have the ASA logo be a little less prominent. Since we are going to the expense of full color, I would like to make the full color really pop. Perhaps use the pictures more. See the website at www.asamokan.org for picture ideas. Maybe similar pictures on the website, but full color. I am open - just wanting something that reflects professionalism and quality.
Thanks!

Just be careful of postal regulations regarding address and postage placement.
SLH - How do you normally mail this? Folded and taped shut? Does the address area need to remain on the top half like your sample?

That is very nice Gilles
Thank you! :)
About the address place, I'm waiting for feedback to put it exactly where it must be...
Gilles.
Great job . . . After sending it to the president to review, we are looking at changing the pictures out for some of the association's pictures of events that take place throughout the year. I will upload the pictures for you. The solid red bar isn't necessary across the top. I realize that it was that way in the current masthead but is not part of the logo. Feel free to move this around if you feel like doing so. We also need to keep Missouri / Kansas as part of the large wording so that it will differentiate this publication for the national offices of ASA.
Some additional comments . . . I would like to reduce the size of the word "Newsletter". It is too dominating. I would prefer that "The Driving Force" be the focus. The Postage Paid Box must appear in the Address Type area. We will also need to include the return address in this same area. (Remove from above). This address area must be white and be a minimum of 4" wide and 1-1/2" tall.
The Month/Year will be printed in black each month and needs to be in an area that does not have to be "exact".
Great Job. I will get the pictures uploaded late tonight or first thing in the a.m.
Looking forward to any other ideas!!!

Are you looking for just a masthead or an entire shell?

Thank you very much. Your guidelines will help me to make the changes :) I will do all the changes you requested and post the result later today. I'm waiting for you to upload the pictures so I could include them in the next design. If you can, place high resolution pictures for the masthead.
Thank you again for feedback,
Best regards,
Gilles. :)

Hello,
Here are the latest changes :) . They are with old pictures, but I will replace them with the new ones. I kept the red solid bar across the top because its color catches the eye, and red next to blue and white gives a nice (and American ;) ) combination. As for the "September/October" - you can move it under the "driving" or leave it there where is now. If you want that placed in other part of the newsletter, just let me know.
Best regards,
Gilles. :)

Hello :)
I'm waiting for the pictures to include them in the masthead design :)
Gilles. :D
I just returned from the client board meeting and we have direction on the masthead. They chose not to put pictures of events/members due to concerns I had regarding getting releases, etc. They chose Elkootcho's design. We need to do a few minor modifications:
1) ASA logo needs to be a bit more prominent.
2) The title bar for the issue date needs to be changed/redesigned. The shell will be printed 6 months at a time. The individual monthly issues will need to have the month/year added in black ink.
3) Final artwork needs to be in Adobe Illustrator.
Gilles -- I love the "Win A Car" idea. Wish they had that in their event budget to give away! Thank you for your hard work and ideas! Be sure to look for future projects - I like your style!
Sorry for the delay - - - I had to wait for final word from the board meeting this week! GREAT JOB!
Thanks!!!

Which layout are you interested in? The one with ASA across the top or down the side?

Congratulations El Kootcho! :) You are really tough to beat ;) Look, I redesigned the ASA logo as a vector. I can send it to you as a vector, maybe it will help you somehow. Let me know if you want it, OK?
Congratulations again,
Gilles.
The one from October 10th at 12:06 that is down the side.
Thanks!
Sheri
Elkootcho - Can you please email the file(s) to sheri@kc.rr.com at your earliest convenience. We are attempting to use this for the client's November issue and for the announcement of the client's new president. Thanks!
