Hello Everyone,
This is my first contest here after doing about five or six over on Sitepoint. I've seen the work many of you do and am very impressed. The rules for this contest are below:
1. Prize is $250. This is for the main page template and one subpage template.
2. This website is for a trade group that represents over 300 independent supermarkets in the New York City area. The site must be on top of everything else, professional/corporate. These people are very serious/conservative and the website design must reflect this.
3. The color scheme should reflect the colors in the logo. Their logo is in the following link. Contest Logo (http://www.compareinternet.net/nsalogo.jpg). I have also attached it to the post.
4. The rest of the site will be done in Dreamweaver. Please make sure that your code is compatible with this program.
5. Menu or sidebar should be the following: About Us, History, News, Board of Directors, Scholarship Information. It should be easy to add/remove menu items as needed.
6. Please address all questions on the board. If you have a question, that probably means others also do. I prefer to answer once here than ten times privately.
*EDIT* 7. Deadline has been extended to November 15. Please note, this deadline can be shortened or extended as I deem necessary.
Thanks for looking at this contest and I await all your excellent submissions.

I have a question about requirement #4...
The rest of the site will be done in Dreamweaver. Please make sure that your code is compatible with this program.
Could you clarify if standard html will be ok? I know a lot of the designers use Photoshop and then splice their images and convert it to html. Will Dreamweaver work with a template that was spliced into html by another program?
The other way is some of the designers hand-code their designs. Can Dreamweaver work with that kind of file? It's just a standard html document.
I guess what I'm asking is, can you tell us what "compatibility" problems you've run across in the past that we should know about. We recently had an issue with a contest holder asking for a FrontPage template and most of us thought a basic html file would work fine but we found out that wasn't the case.
Thanks :)

There is no difference, straight html will work well in whatever editor chosen.. prehaps the poster means they would like the templates set up as dreamweaver *templates*?
Otherwise dreamweaver can edit anything. IMO :)

The problem I've had before is with people writing faulty code, which might work from Notepad to IE, but not with editors. Or sometimes, when people use Frontpage to create a site, the code comes up extremely warped.
I should have rephrased it to read that all submissions should comply as closely as possible to W3 standards. If it does that, I won't have any problems. Also, at least you know what program I'm using to work with so you can use that information when creating your design.
I'm joining this contest too. :)

Wow, I'm surprised. Two full days and no entries yet?

That's normal with a template contest at Design Outpost for 3 reasons...
1) We have several template contests going on at once
2) We all have full time jobs, families, schooling that keep us busy
3) We start from scratch with each template
This isn't an assembly line. You will have entries coming in shortly. You may want to look at the other template contests to see that they normally start off slowly and reach their peak towards the deadline. Hang in there, as they say... "You can't rush art" :)

It always feels so good to get the first couple of submissions.
Great job so far by both.
Disturb: Very nice layout and feel to the site. I like what you did with the Statue of Liberty, but I'd also like to add something related to supermarkets, like Huhhso did. I like the way the logo looks and your use of colors to match it. Well done.
Huhhso: Also a very good entry. I think the raspberries up top might be a little too much though. Try to put something in that's a little more corporate in that spot. I think the logo is a little understated in your entry. Try to have it play a bigger part in the overall design. Nice job on the contents. You added some stuff I forgot (pressroom, membership, contact,).
Of course, I have to go back to the organization and see what comments they have. When I have those, I will update all of you.
Two strong submissions to start off, but I'm sure that many of you have some more excellent designs up your sleeves.

Some more feedback -
Eskers: A little too simplistic and bland for my taste. Try to spice it up while keeping it corporate somehow. Also, congrats on your first entry.
Marengo: I'll be waiting for your entry.

Here's an update. I've showed all the entries to the board and they have not yet decided. Supposedly, they will be meeting next Wednesday Oct. 22 to decide. This means the contest deadline will be extended to Monday October 20 at 11:59 PM. Expect a decision on Thursday October 23 or Friday October 24.
Prelim exams are over. So I'm free to make designs again :) Can I still join?

I just spoke with the executive director of the NSA. He said that at their last meeting, they decided to postpone the decision until after Nov. 15. That date is their annual banquet and they decided that they were going to concentrate on the banquet before shifting to the website.
This means that I'm extending the contest until November 15. All additional entries are welcome.
Thanks and sorry for any inconvenience.

This is supposed to be over. But the contest holder has not come back to announce the winner yet.

Sorry for the long wait. I tried contacting the exec. director of the organization last week and was told he was on vacation. I just sent him and all the members of the board of directors an email telling them that I need a decision. As soon as I get a decision I'll pass it on to you guys.
I wish I had more control of the situation but the site's not for me. That's the price you have to pay sometime.
P.S. Palmer, thanks for the reminder.

I'll just sit this one out. I don't want to delay things further for everyone who's been waiting for a while.

I've been speaking regularly with the Exec. Director of the organization, but he keeps pushing back a decision. I spoke with him yesterday and gave him my personal recommendation. Hopefully, he'll get back to me either today or tomorrow to see if we can finalize this thing.
I'm sorry about the delay but this is a fairly large organization with basically one person doing all the work, which means that he's usually juggling six or seven different things at once.
EDIT: Removed.

Finally received word again. They have not been able to come to a decision. I told them I was going to choose the design just to get the job over with. Fortunately, he agreed it was best, which is good for you people because it means someone is getting paid soon.
I realized some of you pulled your designs (Marina, Marengo, etc.) If you can, I would really appreciate you reentering the contest, as I need all the options possible before making a choice.
Also, anyone who still wants to enter, you have until Thursday, May 14 at 11:59 PM to make your submission.
I will be making the final decision early Friday morning. All the same rules from before apply.
I want to apologize completely for the delay in this contest. I never expected it to take this long, but unfortunately, it wasn't as big a priority to the organization as they had originally told me. I hope to finish this contest and work with the winner to create a great website.

As promised, I've made a decision.
The winner for the contest is HHeine.
Thank you to everyone who entered the contest and to Palmer for his help throughout. I again want to apologize for the long delay in making this decision. I don't like to not have control of every aspect for this exact same reason and I can assure you that any future contests that I have will be run in a much better manner.
Sincerely,
Omar
