Hi there,
My son is 5 and has Type 1 Diabetes. We are hoping to have a huge team walking on the annual fundraising walk in June, and I'm looking for a new logo. Here is a slideshow to get you in the mood (it may take a minute to load)...
http://www.jenniferpearsonphotography.com/slideshows/niels.htm
Project Summary:

What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Super Team Niels should be the largest part of the Logo.
Also, '2008' (smaller), and 'Helping the JDRF to Find a Cure' (smaller)

What type of product or service do you offer?
T-shirts for a rockin' team to support Juvenile Diabetes Research

How long have you been in business?
This is not my business (I am a photographer) - I'm operating as a Mom here :-)

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
Great t-shirts that people want to keep wearing after the walk

What are your long term goals?
Same as above - to get the word out

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
Thursday, April 24th

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
Well, the t-shirt is designed with a 5 year old in mind - everyone is walking on his behalf - but many are adults, and some are children

Who would you like to add to your audience?

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
Just black on white (vector file) - solid colour

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
The t-shirts will be navy (for small children), and indigo blue for adults and youth

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
I'm *thinking* super-hero'ish, but I'm not attached to that entirely - I like smooth edges versus jagged as well. I like stars. I like circular versus square.

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
That's we're the best team out there!!

What is your tagline or slogan?
As mentioned above, 'Helping the JDRF to Find a Cure'

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?

Where will your new logo be used?
T-shirts for a walk

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
Other team designers :-), of which there are few, as most people do it themselves - something basic - I want something more

List competitive URLs if possible

What sets you apart from your competitors?

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:

Oooh, I quite like this. Thanks for making the effort :-). I should know our t-shirt colours in a day or so, at which point I would likely choose different colours. I know I had asked for one solid, but I like the idea of two, now that I see them. It will be worth the extra cost in printing the t-shirts.

For this design, I'm wondering what it would look like, with the top 2 shoes coming together, like a complete heart (not quite touching). Not sure if you kept the spacing for a reason. As well, I would like to see the Super Team Niels in caps as well. I like the one footprint a different colour.

Beyond that - as a second idea - is it possible to have some sort of super shield instead of the heart - with a big 'N' in it? Something superhero'ish? I still want to consider that as an option.

Thank you for feedback. I'll post a version with 2 shoes coming together, in fact original draft was made like that, but I was not very keen on it :)

Here is a shield concept.

Hi,
Thanks so much for your shield attempt. I'm not big on italics - so I would ask for that to be changed. I like the shield, but I think I like the idea of the N contained, and perhaps a capital N? For Font, simple is where it's at for me I think.

For colours, I can't go beyond 2 colours, so your lower left would be more appropriate than the larger one shown. Finally - the 2008 - I don't think I like where it is. Actually, I think I might like it slightly smaller than Super Team Niels, with a line again, like in design #1 - and keeping where it is, between Super Team Niels, and HTJDRFTFAC.
Cheers, and thanks again.

Hello, I just had to join this design competition. I went with more of a superhero type look. Let me know what you think, thanks! :)

Tina - so excited to see you on board here! Looking forward to your design.

Kelepania,
Thanks so much for your effort, but it's not what I'm looking for. I like things more compact - like the 2 designs above.

Here's the revision of heart concept.

Please Note:
I think the shirts will be NAVY and INDIGO BLUE.

Blesseville,
Thanks for the revision. When looking at your first one, however, I liked the spacing of the whole heart, ONLY change the top two - to almost touch each other - closer to a 45 degree angle. I definitely like the caps better, although I think I would go with a stronger font - even something like Century Gothic, or Lucida Sans, or Verdana. Same goes for 'Helping the JDRF' - simple and straight, versus tips on the H, l, p, etc.

I still really like the idea of a shield, so I hope to get your revision on that one as well. Thanks for your time. It is greatly appreciated.

Jennifer - thanks for your idea. I think overall that it is two busy, and I will only be going with two colours. I like the 'Niels' in there, and but I think I like the idea of a circle versus a rectangle-type shape. I like nice clean lines. I'm not big on the yellow oval behind everything - I would do without the oval altogether. The dinosaur with the cape is interesting, but I think it's too busy. As an FYI, it is 'Helping the JDRF to Find a Cure'.

For all designers...I think I would like to stick to some sort of shield/circle - with either Niels inside alone, or Super Team Niels inside. We had some stars last year (the logo can be seen in the last slideshow picture). I like stars.

another try...

Hi Jennifer,
Wow...that was quick. I like this idea a lot, but I think I would like the circle centered above the SUPER TEAM. I think 'Niels' needs to be on it's own, or part of Super Team, as I find the 2008 sort of competes with his name. I like the font you have chosen. I think - if we are going with the circle above, then we could afford SUPER TEAM NIELS all in one line - perhaps with Niels bolded as you have it. I like the size/style of your JDRF line. I like the line with 2008 and the 'Helping...' sentence in design #1 (not the font, but the style).

For the shield/crest...it's not quite working for me. I do like the solid over the scratchy (3/2 versus 1). I think, though, that it might be nice with a bit of an edge/border - 1/8th of the way in - with stars inside - then the N inside is just normal. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it properly - outside thin line dark, then white thicker line, with stars evenly spaced, then dark inside, with light, normal 'N'.
Thanks.

I think this is what you mean about the stars; if not, let me know.

I can put SuperteamNiels on one line, but then it is diminished by having to balance it with 2008 on its own below.

Let me know...

Hi Jennifer,
I love your speed, girl! Okay...I love the stars, but can they be in a band at the edge - so dark edge - white band with black stars - black center circle with 'N' (the band being the size that accommodates the star size you have chosen). The 'N' with the star edge is growing on me, so I don't want to rule that out. Could you still try 'Super Team Niels' all on one line - in caps - with the line/2008/line underneath (like design #1) - so 2008 will be quite small. We don't necessarily want to emphasize 2008, just make sure we are acknowledging the year. I also potentially like the fun font at the bottom, but with line/2008/line - I'm not sure if a regular font would be better, or if it would still work with the font you chose. Your two last designs (3a and 3b) are definitely the closest to what I think I would like. I'm still open to the 2008 the way you have it, because it looks good, but would like to view the other option(s) as well. Thanks.

Tina - where are you?

OMG Tina! You rock! I have to say that these really touch my heart - because they totally capture my son!! I love these. I think this - or some variation of this - is probably it! I really like how you've done NIELS. The fonts look great. Hmmm...now I have to think on it. I know it will be awesome for all the kids. I just have to think about the adults - i.e. would they wear it after the fact. One small thing - I thing I would like Find a Cure (versus find a cure).

Off to gather some opinions - but this looks great...

Hi Tina,
I just saw #3. I really like the 2 colours. The only change I would consider with #3 is to see what the shield looks like on top.
Thanks. These are really terrific.

Now...I'm off to gather some opinions.

here are some ideas with the gray shirt...

Oops, his eyes ended up a diff. color, I'll fix it in the next version. How's the square/pouch thing? Should I put a line across like a flap and then put the star on that?

japearson2

Hey Tina,
Hmmm. I can't tell which I like better. For the top one, I would leave it just as is. For the bottom...the belt is fine as far as the buckle, but could you make it all white (except the star, of course), and also make the N on his chest white? And the "Helping the JDRF..." blue? Lastly - I don't know how much of a hassle this is - could I see what the navy/purple colour (276C) would look like in version #2, so with the white (so second version, with revisions, with the purple/navy instead of the royal blue). Thx.

After that, I think I'll be able to figure it out for the printers, and all I will need is the black design as my actual file - and then samples of the blue/red and blue/white (the final blue/white), to show the t-shirt folks.

The t-shirt people will need an EPS file - just in black I believe. Is that possible? What form(s) will my file come in? Are they on a transparent background? Thx.

I think that does it for now.

Thanks again for your time, and incredibly generous donation.
Jenny

Did you want the outline on the "N" in gray? I know that sometimes thin negative lines can get filled in when you're silk screening. That's why I was thinking the white might be better. The registration might be a pain though! I will get to these changes in the a.m. thanks!

japearson2
04-18-2008, 04:13 AM
Hey Tina,
I think the N should just be white - no lines around it - just as it looks as in the original black/white one. Don't worry about the dark blue/white sample, as I think I like the look of the bright royal blue with the white - with the revisions I had suggested...white N, Blue "Helping the...", and white belt.

With those choices - will I have to worry about the silk screening? I hope not.

Thanks, Tina.

Is this what you meant by black where the white will be? Also, did you want the the swash that goes through NIELS to be white or the color of the shirt? THanks!

tinawood

Hmm, the blue is showing up brighter in this conversion. It's a pantone color, but a bit darker irl

japearson2
04-19-2008, 03:27 AM
Hey Tina,
That looks great - is that blue darker - or is it just because it is with the black?

Last request - could I see a bright red with the white as well (same as above, but a bright red versus the blue). I just want to make sure the colour shows up well on the gray. I know it is the weekend, so if you can't get to it for a couple of days, I understand.

After that - I think we're good to go for final files.
Thanks for your time.

Hey Tina,
I just realized I didn't answer your question about the blue & black. Yes - that is exactly what I think the t-shirt people are looking for - with the swash as you have it - the colour of the t-shirt - not white. So we'll just have to nail down the right blue, and we'll be good I think.
