(Admin code added by Palmer - 0XU43318G5749072B)
Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
C.L. Steele Photographer or Chris Steele Photographer
I'm open to either and hoping this process will help me choose. The C.L. Steele doesn't have to have periods in it, it may look better without them. Just go with whichever one inspires you.
If I must choose just one, let me know and I will do so.
What type of product or service do you offer?
Wedding/Portrait photography, with some senior photography mixed in.
How long have you been in business?
Just starting my own but have been working as a second shooter for another pro for a year.
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
Something that is easily recognized as mine. I want a logo that will be able to be used as a watermark, letterhead, on business cards, etc. to keep the branding flowing through all my work.
What are your long term goals?
Take over the world! Ok, seriously, I would like to become know locally, then regionally, as a high quality wedding photographer.
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
April 25th
Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
Younger, hip, chic, brides. High school seniors.
Who would you like to add to your audience?
More of the same.
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
Something that is clean and simple, yet hip, fun, modern, and stylish. I really want it to look high end and cutting edge at the same time.
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
I really don't. I know I don't want to go with the trendy brown/teal theme I'm seeing everywhere. Beyond that, I'm open to ideas. Maybe deep reds, mahogany, deep purple, black? I also really like the brushed aluminum or titanium look. Something that says elegant and modern. Again, I'm challenged in this area so don't put too much stock in my suggestions. I most likely am way off.
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
I don't. I like the idea of an icon, but it's not necessary if you can make the name look cool on it's own.
Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
High end, modern, hip, chic, cutting edge.
What is your tagline or slogan?
N/A
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
I'm something fresh, modern, out of the ordinary. There are a million photographers springing up and it's really important that I stand out as much as possible. I'm targeting the high end clients right from the start. I want my image to scream that if a client books me they are going to get something different than their friends got at their wedding/portrait session.
Where will your new logo be used?
Website, letterhead, business card, cd's, contracts, etc. Basically everything I give out to existing or potential clients. I really want something that can flow through all of that.
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
A zillion other photographers. I think a LOT of the logos look the same. I see a ton of the "first name one color, last name another color" themes with no other embellishments. Also the brown/teal thing is everywhere.
List competitive URLs if possible
What sets you apart from your competitors?
I'm not happy with "good enough" or "ordinary." I strive to make people look great, and their photos to look different, with a fashion sense in mind.
Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Not your fathers photographer

Hi Pracus. Thanks for being the first to jump in. I was getting worried.
Unfortunately I'm not diggin this design much. The font and placement seems way to plain, like something anyone could have done. The icon is a nice idea but I'm just not feeling it. Also the red is way too light. I would want a deeper, richer red if I go with anything red.
Thanks a bunch for trying. If you have any other ideas I'd love to see them.

Note to all designers - When I put "Photographer" for what I wanted in the text, that was not a typo. I really want "photographer" not "photography." I feel it is more personal that way.
Ok, on to the designs so far - Pracus and Taldo have the right idea. I want something modern, hip, strong, and stylish.
Taldo - I like yours the best so far but feel it needs something more. I can't put my finger on it, but maybe you could spice it up just a bit? Maybe some more lines, or try some color where the gray is, or maybe something besides a square for the icon. I do like it, I'm just not loving it yet. Please play more in the direction you are going.
Pracus - The more I look at yours the more it's growing on me. maybe try some different fonts and/or colors. I like the gradient in the icon, but maybe more of a deep mahogany color would work better fading to almost black? Or try a titanium/brushed aluminum look.
BlueCherry - I kinda like V2. I don't like V1 at all. The stroke in V2 feels a little thick and loose to me. Also the color is not what I'm looking for at all, too muted. What makes me kind of like it though is the small black one in the corner, so maybe it's more the color than anything.
Deanna - Not at all what I'm looking for. Sorry =( I have watched this site for a while and do like your work. Maybe you could go in a different direction and try again?
Thanks for the work so far.

BlueCherry - Much, much better colors. I really like V3 and V4. If I had to pick just one, it would probably be V4 colors. I like the gradient and the drop shadow to make it look like it a bit 3D. The stroke itself though is still not jiving with me. Maybe if it interacted more with the name with the top of the S going through or surrounded it more? I dunno. Maybe a rounder C? I can't place it really, just not working for me.
Thanks for the revision, I like the colors!

BlueCherry - I'm liking V7, thank you for thining it out and extending it a bit. However, I think it might be too uniform now. I liked the fact that in the first one, it looked like a brush stroke and very much like that it tapered and almost looked like a path with a vanishing point. Maybe a happy medium between the two? V8 and V10 I don't like at all. V9, I need to look at more.
Giant - Thanks for jumping in. I like the CS Icon idea, but the whole thing feels a little too industrial too me. Maybe loosen it up a bit and make it a bit more abstract? Also, the colors need to be deeper, richer. *edit* looked at the colors again, maybe they are ok, but I like the gradient that's going on in some of the other designs where it fades to almost black.
Taldo - Where are ya? I like where you were going with yours and I'm looking forward to some more ideas from you in that same direction.
Thanks to all. You guys rock!

I haven't had power since yesterday afternoon, so I haven't been able to look at anything new since then. I don't have time to comment now, but I can already see I need to extend the deadline at least another week. How do I do that?
I will post back later with more thoughts on the designs. I'd love to see some more ideas in the meantime:)

OK, after looking at all these for a while, I just don't feel we are going in the right direction. I'm going to try again to convey what I'm looking for.
I want to attract younger, hip brides and high school seniors. I'm looking for the edgier crowd, not the conservative crowd. The kind of people that would listen to rock, pop or alternative music. I want these to be higher end clients as well, people that have money.
I feel to attract this type of client my image (and thus logo) needs to be inline with the types of images these types of people are used to seeing in clothing, cologne/perfume, etc.
I prefer round corners over sharp corners
I prefer swoopy (but not too swoopy and girly) lines over straight lines
I like the color green - a lot
I like abstract art
I'm a drummer
I would really like someone to take a crack at "CL Steele" Maybe with a cool looking CL, the L with a long tail, the Steele on top of the tail, and the Photographer underneath? In my mind that might look cool, but on paper it might look horrible. I dunno.
I hope some of the things I threw out spark some different ideas. I'm really open to new ideas at this point and I'm guessing I haven't explained things well in the beginning. Heck, if you have something that doesn't match any of that, throw it out, I might like it.
If there is anything else I can do to help you guys out, please don't hesitate to ask. I appreciate the hard work so far.

Tina - I'm diggin your stuff! A couple of things though....I think you may have misunderstood the CL thing. I either want "CL Steele" Or "Chris Steele" not the two mixed. In V1 and V2 it looks like you have a CL icon with Chris Steele text.
V1 - least liked of the 3, a little too feminine for me. I'm a guy:cool:
V2 - I like the icon, lets see what it looks like with a CS. Not a big fan of the colors though. Maybe more of a sage green and ditch the brown for something else that will compliment.
V3 - I like the font and how you've done the text. Can you try CL Steele with that one? I almost think the icon style from V2 would work here too. As for color, maybe try the blue from above PMS 546 - I really like what BlueCherry did with the gradient in that color. It looks cool I think. If you were to use a solid version of that I would say the lighter end of it.
Thanks for jumping in here! I like where you are going!

OK, that's the first time I have seen "CL Steele" and I'm liking it. I don't really like that design (says western to me for some reason) but I am liking the idea of "CL Steele" with the CL part done in a way that I can use just that as a watermark on proofs.
I would like to see a few more CL Steele designs before I go that direction for sure. I don't want to drag this out and waffle back and forth, so I will make a quick decision and we can work on either "Chris Steele" or "CL Steele." I just need to see a few more examples first.
Giant - V2 and V3 are more what I'm looking for, but still not quite there. I like the artistic and abstract feel of them, but still a little too sterile feeling.
Also, note to all designers - Lets ditch the red altogether. I'm finding that I really don't like it with black. Reminds me of a sports team colors or something. Maybe it's just the shade that is being used, I dunno. I'm just not diggin it.
I like the kind of blue/gray color that BlueCherry used above, especially the middle part of that gradient.
Speaking of gradients, I'm finding that I really like those too. I like how they make things look a little 3D vs the 2D feel. Maybe play more with gradients and drop shadows. I'm diggin the 3D feel a lot.
Another thing that I'm finding I like is the icon or design part of the logo to the left of the text vs on top of it.
Thanks for staying with me here!

Here are some websites with logos I like. Maybe this will help:
http://www.joephoto.com/index.php - I like this one a lot. Text in the foreground, cool graphic in the background.
http://www.cafierophoto.com/ I like the simple stylish graphic to the left. I think there could even be one on the right too.
https://www.jerryghionis.com/ - Pink = no. But I do like that there are soft lines and sharp lines together making it soft but masculine at the same time. This one is a tad over the top for me, but it's an example of how the graphic and name are incorporated which I like.
Hopefully those give you some ideas of what I'm after. Like I said above, I'm just really not diggin the square icon and then my name thing. I want my name to "be" the icon, if that makes sense. The graphic(s) to be incorporated in, around, or behind my name vs. in a square box on top of it.
I also know now that I want this logo to be horizontal in nature. I really don't like the feel of the more vertical submissions with the icon on top. The ones with the graphic beside feel better to me. And I think somethin on both sides might work for me better than just one side. Not sure about that though.
I really like the idea of the first link above with a faded graphic behind and the name more bold on top. I think I would want some color though instead of just B&W. I like the colors we have been using so far. The colors Giant used in his last two submissions really appeal to me. Love the gradient look too.
Giant - both of those last two submissions are really cool as art. I dig them. They are just not working for me as a logo. As we move along here I am really starting to get a feel for what I want and have decided a stand alone boxy icon on top of my name just isn't it.
Hope to see some more ideas. If you need more input for me, just holler.

Tina V7 and BlueCherry V11 - I dig it! That's the style I'm looking for folks. A couple of things I'd like to try if it's not too much trouble...
Tina - Different font for the CL Steele part - that one is a bit too blocky. Try something a bit more edgy. I like the "Photographer" part though. Also can you try Chris Steele so I can see how that looks?
The graphic - It feels just a little feminine to me, very close, but just not quite there. It could very well be the color. Maybe we could darken it just a bit and see if that helps? It might also be the thin lines, I dunno. Any way to thicken them up or, hmm, make them harder somehow? I'm just thinking out loud here.
What about putting a cool looking, very muted/faded CS behind the whole thing in the middle? What do you think? Something like this http://jgarnerphoto.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/38124
That might be too much, I dunno.
BlueCherry - I like V11 a lot too. I really dig the faded look of it and the smudges. Cool feel. The name though isn't jiving with it to me. Maybe bigger and bolder on top, and fade back the graphic a bit? Name in black or dark color and the graphic in a more muted color?
I totally like the idea of that one but maybe not so fat in the middle and make the name stand out more. I would love it if you would play with it a bit. I really like it.
If you could show me versions with CL Steele and Chris Steele too I would appreciate it.
Thanks a ton everyone, we are getting there:cool:

I wanted to add - I keep coming back to BlueCherry's V13 too. I like the sloppy border around the box with my name in it. I like the font. I like the idea of the scroll work around the whole thing...but, it's too girly for me and too separated. A little more masculine and if it went in, around, and behind the name it would be cool. Again, I like the smudges and the overall feel, just not that particular graphic.

Kekepania - I like that! Can you make the graphic bigger, put it faded in the background (and a different color for separation), and put the text on top of it (foreground). Does that make sense?
Maybe graphic in a faded sage green. "CL Steele" text in the blue from above (with a gradient?), and the "photographer" just the way it is.

Kekepania - V3
I'm hoping to see some revisions from Tina and BlueCherry with some changes that I asked for above.
Kekepania - I am really digging yours. The only problem I am having with it is it kinda looks a bit too messy, especially in the black only version. The color one, because it's faded the graphic doesn't compete with the text as much and I like it. But the black only one the text gets lost.
I have no idea how long something like that takes to do, but if there was a way to thin out the graphic a bit (as in reduce the number of lines) I would like to see it. I really, really like the feel, it's just a bit too busy.

Ok, down to Tina V10 and Kekepania V4. I'm really diggin both of those.
Tina - Is there any way to stretch the graphic out lengthwise a bit? Also I'd like to see "Photographer" in a different color I think, probably just black. Ans one last request:blush: Could you do it with "CL Steele" so I can see that too?
Kekepania - Can you just make the graphic a faded gray please. I don't think I'm liking the green after all. Sorry, I thought it might look cool. Also, I liked the worn look you had going on the text in the first version, can you put that back in?
Thanks to both of you for putting up with me. I didn't do a very good job in the beginning of knowing what I wanted. I'm loving both of these though so thanks for hanging in there.

I like V13 a lot. Thanks for throwing something new out there. The font is kinda not jiving with me though. It is, but it isn't at the same time. Can we try something else and see how it looks?
I REALLY like how the H and the S in the original one come down and go through the "Photographer" If we could find something that did that in a different font I think that would work. Maybe a hand drawn "S" with a tail that comes down under the "Photographer"? I dunno. Just see what you can do.
Oh, and I definitely want the "Photographer" in a different color for a little separation.
Thanks a bunch

V13a - the second one I like a lot. The only thing is, if you didn't know it was supposed to say CL Steele, the L and the S together look like a big H.
I like the placement of the curly deal under the Steele better than on top. I also like it in the last one where it's underneath the Photographer. Maybe V13 with the swirly under the photographer would look good?
I'm still liking the graphic from the original one too. Not sure I'm ready to let that go, but I do like this new stuff too.
Lot's to think about. Thanks for your hard work so far:cool:

Hey Tina:)
I have done some thinking and lots of looking at these. I really like the original graphic and I can see using it by itself in places (I'm guessing I could separate the two?).
When you get a chance can you work with V12 and:
1. Make the graphic one shade lighter or maybe even an off-white or cream color.
2. Try some different fonts with it - keeping with the CL Steele
3. Show me some different colors for the text - keeping the CL Steele and Photographer separated color wise. I like that you just made Photographer a lighter shade of the main text color.
Thanks
Chris

The one thing that others have said after saying it looks really cool, is it looks a little busy. That is the reason I wanted to try a lighter color, to see if that would make the text pop more. The main thing is I want to keep my name and the graphic intertwined. I want my name to be the logo. Some photographers use a stand alone icon like most of the other designers were posting above. I really just don't dig that as much as the style we are working on now.
If you have other ideas, please run with them. I chose you because ALL your stuff was cool to me so I think we share the same style.

see what you think of these Chris. Also, on the C.L. is that what people call you? You might want to stick with the name people address you with, plus it's easier to design! LOL! Just my .02 cents.

Thanks for putting those up Tina! I am liking the colors a lot, both the greens and the red. As far as the design, I'm going to have to look at it a bit more. I think it looks really cool but it kinda has an old fashioned feel to it, but at the same time it doesn't. I'll look at it more, but I'm just not sure that's the feel I want.
As for the CL thing. People call me Chris. BUT...my domain name for my website is clsteele.com. I wanted something short and easy to remember instead of chrissteelephotographer.com. Also, if you type in chrissteele.com you'll see why I want to stay far away from any form of that (it's a gay porn stars website, and no it's not me:P).
I see what you mean about the design challenges of the CL Steele. Chris Steele is looking better I think, more balanced. If I have to change my domain so be it. If however we can make CL look cool somehow, that would be ideal.
If it wouldn't be too much trouble can I see V12 with the font and colors from V14b in both the CL Steele and Chris Steele? Also, same font (14b) but colors from 14d in both CL ad Chris. Also, maybe move the Steele down so the loop of the S goes under/through the Photographer, putting Photographer on top of it though (foreground).

Oh, one last request. Can we try a font that's not script and a little more edgy and see how that looks? Maybe V14 with a font like that would work because it would be more narrow. I dunno, just a thought.

I'm not sure what you mean by edgy fonts. If you want to check out some fonts on www.myfonts.com using your name and then give me an idea, that would help me out a lot, thanks!

Hi Tina:) I'm so sorry I haven't been around in a wile. I broke my toe, then I got sick lol. Bad week!
Anyway, I'm really torn between 14a and 15a...not sure which way to go honestly. I like them both a lot. The colors I'm really diggin, so we can stick with those for sure.
My only issue with either one is:
15a - Looks a little busy with the graphic behind still. Is there any way to fade that graphic back a bit more so the main text stands out?
14a - kind of has an "old fashioned" feel to me - but at the same time I like it. Anymore graphics you could use top and bottom that gave it a more edgy, rough, or urban look? Not sure those are the right words, but hopefully you'll know what I mean. I guess just less old fashioned and more modern/alternative.
The last two I don't like at all, sorry:blush:.

I like 16c and 16d. Can I see what the elements in 16d would look like solid?
If you feel like throwing any more up along those lines that would be great. If not I will look these over tonight and get back to you tomorrow.
Thanks for all your hard work. I will make a decision one way or another in the next day or two so I don't take any more of your time.
Thanks a bunch:D

Hi Tina:)
I'm going to go with V15a. I do have a few questions first though.
I would like you to use the "CL" from 16b if possible.
Also, when I receive the files will they be in layer form? Will I be able to use the graphic and text separately from each other?
Also I'm wondering about color. Will I be able to change or tweak the colors at all? Namely tone down the color on the graphic for some applications?
Thanks a bunch
Chris

Hi Chris, here is the revision you asked for. There are certain file types I have to send the files in, vector based so that you can resize without loss of quality. I can also create an Adobe Illustrator or Adobe PS file in layers that you could separate and change color on. The text will be rasterized though, so you wouldn't be able to change the letters. To change the colors, you'll have to use the hue slider or paint bucket, so it's not the most exact method ever. The other issue will be if you do change the colors or elements and then resize it, it could get jaggedy edges, unless you know how to do that. I can help you if you need instructions.

OK, then lets try to get the colors right now I guess.
The reason I ask is because my website has a black background and I don't think the current colors will look good on it. The graphic will pop and the text will get lost. I was hoping to be able to change it to maybe a medium gray graphic and like white or real light color of some type for the text.
The rest of the places I will be using it will be on white paper so the original colors will be ok. Is it possible to get two versions? One for a black background and one for white?
Also, somewhere along the line we lost the 4 dots in the middle of the graphic. Can you put those back in please?
Finally, I haven't seen what the logo looks like yet small. The others you gave me a large and small version, that one you have not. I'm hoping the lines don't get too messy when it's shrunk to watermark or business card size. Can we see what that would look like?
Thanks
Chris

Ok, after looking at things a bit more and printing out the low rez verisions of a few of these, I think the way you faded the graphic back in V15 16a will work best. Full strength it just competes with the text too much.
I was also looking at the Pantone chart and I think I'd like to see a bit more red in the main text. Can you try PMS 505 and 506 and see what that looks like?
Thanks again

I think it's fine to do two versions. I didn't read anywhere that we can't. Here are some on black...

Lookin good!
Ok, the one for the white background is done. Yay!
The black background ones look great too but I'd like to see one more thing before making a decision on those. Can you do exactly what you did with the blue/green but with the red?
I like how there is a gradient that starts light and fades to dark and photographer is in the same color. I'm just thinking I'd like to stay with the red for continuity sake.
Thanks a bunch

Ok Tina, I'm going to go with 18a and 18b. The blue definitely pops off the black background better than the red.
One thing though - The graphic in the two versions does not match. In 18b the lines extend a ways past the end of the text and it has the dots in the middle. In 18a the line on the right side stops barely past the end of the text and there is no dots.
I want both to look like 18b, just different colors.
If you can do that, I think we are done. Yay!
Like we talked about above I would like a way to separate the text and graphic if possible. So if you could give me a way to do that in addition to the regular files I would appreciate it.
Thanks for all the hard work!
Chris

Thanks Tina. The files were set up perfectly and are exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately the justification is still off between the two. Here are a couple of pics to show what I mean...

I would like them to both match the black version if possible. I like the way the graphic sits between the G and R of PHOTOGRAPHER in that one better. I'm sorry to be a pain and honestly if they were just a little off I wouldn't worry about it. But as you can see they are very noticeably different from each other. Let me know what you can do.
And again the file types you provided were PERFECT.

Another thing I'm noticing is the graphic looks very fat and blocky compared to the examples you posted. Maybe I'm not converting it right, but I don't think so.
If you look at the examples you posted the lines of the graphic are not even half the width of the letters. In the files I got (you can see in the examples) the lines of the graphic are almost the same width of the letters. I even produced a small sample from the .eps file to see if maybe it was the scaling.

As you can see the lines are much fatter than the examples above. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm on a PC. Is that a problem?
The files look perfect! The justification is right, the graphic is thinner, everything looks great. Mods, this project is finished and I have received the files:cool:
One question though, one of the files in there is an "AI" file and my computer can't read it. What is that for?
Thanks for everything Tina
Chris

Oh good! The .ai file is for Adobe Illustrator. Photoshop should open it, but it's really just a duplicate of the eps file. You shouldn't need it.
