I have been asked to put together a small website for Northants Koi club and so I thought I would get some excellent designs here
Northants koi club is a club for Koi owners based all over the county of Northamptonshire and surrounding areas. The club meets once a month with guest speakers from the Koi world, competitions etc.
The website will feature latest news, members ponds, contact and joining details as well as chat boards and a small shop where dry good such as koi food, UV bulbs etc are sold at below shop prices to members with any profits from the shop going to the christmas dinner and trips to other countys ponds/dealers etc.
I have attached a logo of the koi club, although its only a black and white the koi carp makes the letter I in the word KOI, the patches on the fish are red. The logo has no other colour really and has never really been used on anything except membership cards which dont look great and are black and white. Feel free to make it look better
The site should carry a colour scheme of blue with red, black and white maybe making up other parts of the site. I thought actually using a fish as navigation would be cool, but not so sure now!!
I am doing this website for free (yep another one, Im even paying for the contest) as my Mum is a member and looks after my pond and all my koi I left her with 7 yrs ago when I left home
However I now have an incentive to actually get the site done. The chairperson of the club, who does a lot of good for new members and people who have trouble with there fish she has been a godsend to my mum especially. Unfortunately she was rushed into hospital last week with leukemia, we have been told she is to undergo 6 weeks of intensive Chemo and then she should be fine. I would like to have this site finished for when she comes out as a nice suprise for her especially as she is one of the driving forces in the club.
Look forward to seeing some designs :) Thanks guys!

Just had a thought the categorys will probably be
News,
Articles,
Features
Members Ponds
Join Us

I would need the design the be flexible enough to add new categorys as may be needed.

Sounds like a good cause. I'm in.
I think you forgot to attach the logo. I'll get started on an entry as soon as it's posted.

Logo attached, the blotches on the fish are Red. As you can see the logo spells the work KOI with the fish making up the I, you are free to play with this as long as it resembles the current logo that would be great :)

WOW I love what you have done with the logo, especially the blue effect within the O that is great. The glow round the fish works well too, although would it be possible to have the fish white with red blotches instead of black? The white koi with red patches is more generic.
I like the idea with the header, although for some reason it reminded me of blood and pollution, but im not sure why :s Maybe its your addiction to Jam which influenced the jam colour haze :D
The nav is the nice too although I would probably bunch it up into smaller buttons so its not so dominant, I will probably add things like adds etc under the nav. The text for Nothants Koi club is spot on I like that.
Good entry, hope to see some more too

Lol, yes the reddish colour at the top looked very different in photoshop! I only noticed the blood-like quality when I uploaded the pic
Not to worry, that can be changed. I also think maybe the whole thing needs scaling down a bit. I'll see what I can do ;)

Would it help if I got some photos of some members fish and ponds?
Incidently I love the look of this site
www.online-rent.com
Although I think the Koi site would have to be a full page site as its going to carry a lot of photos, text, articles etc.

Yes, photos would help indeed! I suppose at the moment they're not so important - I can just use another pic in place of the member ones, just to see how the layout looks.
BTW, I'll keep that Online-rent site in mind when making revisions. Cheers! :D

Revision of template... please advise! (Imagine the menu with a roll-over effect thingy). Could possibly incorporate flash into the header, if desired....?

I like the text you put in, had to laugh when I read that he he.
Ok, the text is the right sort of text I am looking for and looks good, the nav menu is much better. Dont worry about adding rollovers etc for SEO it needs to be text based, although I might do the rollover with CSS.
The logo is good and looks nice.
The size works well its wide, which means it will look good on 1024x768.
I like the header text and where you have put the domain as well as the name of the site which is nice and prominant.
The silvery blue bar top/bottom of the header is nice and goes with the site well.
The header though, I dont know what it is, the colour, the picture(the koi are not great), the lines, im not sure. It just doesnt seem to work for me, no matter how you present it, it just doesnt work which is weird. Also I think its quite thick, so on an 800x600 screen it would take up a lot of room, and take a while to load. I think it needs a different header to be honest, but only the pic bit.
I have asked for some photos, so I am waiting for them from the club.
I have uploaded some of my own photos to
http://www.tempest2.com/~bruceuk/koi/
The photos are massive and may not help much, but you never know.
Here are some nice Koi sites
http://www.nishikigoicentre.com/
http://www.koi-carp.com/shopping/asp/default.asp
http://japanese-koi-imports.com/
http://www.aqualifeuk.com/shop/index.htm
There are some nicer koi sites but I couldnt find them!! Just to give you an idea of what others are doing, there are a lot of bad sites too!

Cheers for the helpful feedback! You're right - it is a bit of a crappy koi pic I used, but it's the only royalty-free one I could find. However, now you've supplied me with some of your (much better) pics, I shall see what I can come up with. I'll also take a good look at the other koi sites you mentioned. :D

I didnt mean the pic was crap, I meant the fish were :D
My pics arent much better im afraid and neither are my fish!!!
I dont mind waiting on new pics from the club, I dont want to waste your time. You could always go for a japanese feel too, koi and japanese always go hand in hand.

Your pics were much better! Better selection and everything! Although one of your fish (the dark gray one) is, I'm sure, in fact a whale... it's huge! Better get it checked out, mate! ;) That pearly white one was very cool, though! B)
Japanese-y feel is definitely an option... however, the club logo doesn't really have an ounce of Japan in it, so it might look a bit weird combining the two. Just a thought....

Now that is nice ;)
Would it be possible to include some of the fish in the other pics at all, under the "porthole" type things you have incorporated. The white fish I have, there are 2 photos one of its head and one of its back, which really show up the silver/pearlessence on the body, if that could be incorporated, and also I think there is a real vibrant red, black and white fish (not the one with the red 'hi' on its head) could that be incorporated too?
hotnuts21
10-22-2003, 08:08 AM
INcidently that black fish is much bigger than it looks in the photos. It must be getting on for between 60-80cm long and very round :D

Here's the amended version. I think I've incorporated the ones you mentioned, but there were so many fish, I couldn't really tell!
The whale-esque fish (is it more of a carp than a koi...?) was too big to fit in to any of the circles - it's gonna need a separate page!! ;) 60cm-80cm is friggin huge!!
hotnuts21
10-22-2003, 09:26 AM
They are all Carp hence the name 'Koi Carp' ;)
The japanese just bred a line of colourfull carp, so they are I suppose inbreeds of the carp family, not as hardy as our native carp. The big black one though is almost identical to what you would call a common carp and would catch in most english carp lakes etc. Its a beutifull fish.
The japanese Koi means carp, so I suppose there Carp Carp he he,anyway I will stop carping on LOL
Yeah that looks good :)
Any chance of incorporating a lilly from somewhere, you can sort of add it to the backgroun pic in one of the corners, coz im gonna make the header stretch to fit so something in one of the corners would be good. We need more photos too, as the white fish all over is the same fish and the fish with the red head is the same fish. I can substitute the pics when I get new ones anyway. Would it be possible to swop the small circle with 2 fish in it to have one of the pics with the fish's mouth open jumping out the water to feed.
I will look up which pictures they are if that would make things easier?

Yup, I can incorporate a lilly. Also, if you look up the pics you want, then that'd be much easier for me :) Let me know which ones you'd like, and I'll amend the design and add the lilly.

Dont worry about any others, I have uploaded a pic here, but im not sure if you can get the quality from it though. The red and white fish mainly as its really good quality!
It wouldnt let me upload a jpg for some reason so I have uploaded it here
What might be cool, is I might try and see if there is a different way of loading some pictures into the bubbles each time the page is refreshed!!
So add this one I have uploaded and dont worry about it after that :D

When clicked on, that link went to a pic of someone in an RNLI uniform...! But the actual address you posted went to the fish pic. Where do you actually want this fish pic, again?
That different-pic-each-time-the-page-loads kinda thing should be simple to do, with a random image script. Cool idea! B)

Yeah I will just have to make sure I have all the images optimized to the right size.
Ok replace the small black and white fish with an orange head next to the logo with a slightly bigger image of the Red and white koi I just posted.
Replace the two fish with there heads side by side with the pict001 picture of the two koi jumping out of the water ;)

Can you put the nav on the left, and a new box on the right "upcoming events" with stuff like, Meeting, Koi show, trip to potteries in the box.
Ideally I would like to keep the nav on the right, but if we put the events box on the left people would just think its the navigation :D

"Jam man"... like it :)
Yep, I shall make those changes ASAP. This "Upcoming events" box... I can make it into an iframe with the articles within it, if you get what I mean..? That way, the only thing you'll have to update is the iframe page itself. If you'd like a working example of it, just let me know and I'll mock one up for you.

Dont worry about it. The site will php/mysql powered, so it will just pull the latest events from the DB.
It needs to have the date as well so something like
10/1/03 Monthly meeting
11/1/03 pond visit
I will make the links clickable probably to a calender or something. Im not a fan of iframes for SEO.
Thanks

WOW! The one in that 2nd pic - I'm sure that used to be a small, transparent fish... until it swallowed a zebra! Or, of course, it could be a distant cousin of the killer whale....

Could you also let me have the pics inside the circles as seperate images as well? So if I get round to implementing this different fish per page idea, I will need to know the sizes.

Could you also let me have the pics inside the circles as seperate images as well? So if I get round to implementing this different fish per page idea, I will need to know the sizes.
Thanks :) [/b][/quote]
Hmm... I've just sliced up that part in kind of 100x119 vertical blocks. Would you like me to re-slice it so that it would be easier to implement the new-fish-per-page thing....?
In either case, I shall be sending you the psd file anyway.

So we're all sorted now, then! :D
Erm.. just a question... how does the payment thing work. I'm still fairly new to this site and this is the first contest I've won... can anyone fill me in? Cheers in advance!

"Jam man"... that's going in my repertoire of nicknames! It's going to be added to a growing list which already consists of names like 'Jonmulk', 'Incredible Mulk', 'Webby webby webjam', 'Sticky Jam', 'Keeno Morales', 'Jon', 'Mulkster', repeat to fade...
BTW, the "JAM" thing comes from my initials - JKAM... took out the 'K' to make a word! :) Clever me!
