Hey guys,

Thanks for kicking it off! Some quick feedback for all of you.

Kekepania: For both versions, I feel the 'X' is too big and it detracts from the rest of the logo. The letters are too thick; and the color is too plain. Don't think it's the right color. Maybe you can try a different font and/or color combination.

giant: Version 1 - Cool concept, but a little busier than what I'd like to see. Perhaps we could make the person smaller so that it plays well with the rest of the letters. At this stage, I'd like to see some other experimental ideas.

Version 2 is too feminine. While the site is gender-neutral, the cursive along w/ the font isn't doing the trick. Italics are fine, but I don't think cursive works that well (you're welcome to prove me wrong though! :)

plum74: The font is too blocky. Fun idea with the 'C' though -- however, the user might confuse the leg and not immediately recognize the letter 'c'

Tyler (#8): The italics are fine. Font presentation is a bit too plain... no pizazz, nothing unique that stood out subtly. The .net is too light. Not a fan of the symbol -- what is it suppose to be?

#9 - not sure if I like the way this symbol integrates with the font.

plum74 (#10): The 'C' is not working. I'm not comfortable reading the word with that image there. It's too elongated of a 'C'.

#11: The person and background seems too generic... Would love to see something a bit more unique that stands out and still have that "ah ha! I get it." message.

#17 (version 3): I like the symbol to the left of the name much better. The strikethrough is fine, but.... it needs to be stepped up a level. Right now, I feel it's a tacky line. I'm thinking a stylized strikethrough (check out espn.com) or something more unique than a plain light strikethrough. Also, I'd like to see a version of it italicized.

The orange dots are fine if they can be more integrated. It adds a different element to the logo, but right now I feel it's too stand-offish.... like it's by itself and not integrated very well with the rest of the logo. What can we do to make it "fit" more with the other letters/domain?

giant: (#12): It feels like the logo is too "cartoonish", with the loopy "e" and the R. While it's different, I don't think it works in our case. I'm looking for more of a subtle uniqueness -- something that's different but plays well with the rest of the letters / name.

#13: Same as above. Please try some different fonts.

#18 (vers. 3): Not the right font. The E is too busy. and I don't like the 'X'.

xpressions (#14): I like the italics. Could we downsize the 'xercises' part? The .net (I'm not sure if it's the position or area) gives the logo a 'techish' feel. The symbol is alright... Is there any way to make it a bit more unique? While it seems generically symbolic... I'd like to see if we can take it further and have it be a unique mark. Please check out some of examples I mentioned in my 1st post to see how I think about those logos.

OffbeatDesign (#15): I think the font is too lanky and thin and the color/font combination (with the 'e') makes it look weird.

#16: The symbol is a little better than in the previous version. Can we make it so that it's more relevant to the name? I know it's a person, but I'd like to step it up a notch. Ex. Slickdeals.net's symbol is clever in that it incorporates the element of money and their acronyms.

OffbeatDesign: If I had to choose between vers. 3 or 4, I'd go with 3 because version 4 is just way too busy. But, I'd really like to see something different. We're doing the same concept with slight variants and I'd like to go back to the drawing board.

BlueCherryGraphics (v1): Symbol seems too stretched... too thin... Color contrasts are too light and not the right combination.

v2 & v3: The symbol is too busy; Don't like the font. Too loopy.

giant (v4): I really feel that right now using it in place of the 'R' just isn't the right placement and the symbol is awkwardly used. It's on-topic, but it's too busy. The italics are fine.

General Notes: I've noticed that a lot of the subsequent versions vary by a small amount. I'd like to see more branching out of ideas as opposed to tweaking.

When a concept is presented which shows promise, I will communicate that to the designer. Otherwise, when the overall logo isn't working out, please see if another idea would be a better fit based on the feedback and my original assessment. Thanks!

plum74 (v3.1): I'm not sure what the symbol represents or how it relates to exercises. It looks like a person... in motion? Would you be able to elaborate on the relation between symbol and name. On a separate note, the symbol holds some potential and looks like a good foundation. I feel that if it could be used well if it can be built off to look more unique.

vers 3.2: This is a subtle variation. We're looking for more a pronounced change such as the above.

xpressions (v2): I feel the brushstroke on the font is too thick for it's style. The symbol appears to be that of someone stretching? I'm not sure if a particular form of exercise would be representative of the exercises as a whole. Possibly a) something particularly unique or b) more fitting for the general topic would work better.

v3: Very similar remarks as to vers. 2. Lets deal away with the lens flare for now. I feel that's just icing on the cake once the right symbol comes along.

giant (v5): Thanks for the entry, but I'm not feeling the font and color combination.

Hey plum74, thanks for all the iterations of this logo. We can stop the derivative versions as I think it demonstrates the depth of that particular concept quite well.

If you feel that you could come up with a different concept that's not a derivative of this idea, I would love to see it.

Paula23: Thanks for entering! The graphic seems to skew a particular gender; I'd like to see a symbol that's *either* more gender neutral or completely unique. Can we also try some new font types? I like the italicize, lets keep that.

Hey paula, your vers 2 appears slightly more abstract, but somewhat related to the topic on hand. Can we tweak it some more to make it more subtly relevant? Right now, I see it as a person stretching, but it also looks like a pathway. This might hold some potential, but it requires a more subtle integration of the symbol w/ the rest of the logo.

In your vers. 3, instead of the person on the C, would it make more sense to convert the X into the person; clean it up and integrate it more closely w/ the rest of the logo?

For everyone else - Still looking for that one to blow the contest out of the water. These are fantastic entries, but so far there's not a definitive winner yet! Don't be shy and throw your hat in the ring.

Hey guys,

I thoroughly enjoy all the variety of concepts that's coming in. Let me see if we can throw some fresh direction on this logo (this is for giant and paula, too.)

I envision exercises.net as a logo which incorporates elements of "active", "movement". Logos like Nike's Swoosh or Adidas spring to mind. Any type of active sports-type company logos like the above with a unique (or generic if done and placed right) symbol would work well.

The focus should first be the font. I feel that we haven't nailed down the right font for this type of logo just yet. Please don't hesitate to try different things like borders or edge effects.

A graphic that works well as a backdrop -or- a smaller symbol which integrates well with the rest of the logo should be the secondary focus after the correct font is identified. If there are any questions or if I can clear up anything, please do let me know. Thank you again!

BTW - I'll be providing a $50 2nd-prize winner to everyone who has participated in the contest so it's not too late to get your entry in now. Best of luck!!!

Hi paula!

Cool concept -- but I feel the font is a little too "fat." I like how you're playing around with integrating the letter w/ the rest of the logo. Great direction. However, I feel X's stretch might be _too_ much. Maybe if we can tone it down. Also, some different color combinations might work better -- not too keen on the maroon.

Finally, I'd like to bring attention to the extension as well. The light gray doesn't work in contrast w/ the maroon. Maybe both colors need to be changed? Maybe have it be underneath and some type of a line extending from left -> right? Maybe directly to the right as a regular extension?

Anyways, I like the idea of using the letters as unique symbols. We should aim for that direction (not necessarily just the letter 'X'). Thanks!!!

Hi Paula,

Vers. 9 is too "futuristic" and vers. 8 seems too informal. Your vers. 7 is so far holds the best potential amongst your entries.

But I want to show a few logos that I liked; there's usually something about their style that I enjoyed.

- www.slickdeals.net - Great font + symbol integration
- www.webmd.com - Great font and style of logo presentation
- http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/news/2008-09-08/203342.html
- http://www.ffwd.com/ -- very "web 2.0"ish. I like the >> button integrated into the 'd'.
- http://www.mint.com/ - Good color combination. Good symbol. Like the attention to detail across the top of 'm' 'i' and 't'. Great font.
- http://www.parascale.com/ - For a techish symbol, it's good. The 2-tone color is cool (might be able to apply that to domain / extension.) and the symbol is unique

Hey all,

Some wicked stuff here! Lets dig right into it...

paula10, vers10: We're moving away from the good aspects of your previous versions. It's really hard to read this version, the font is too "blocky" with all the borders (a tad too much). I don't think this one will resonate the purpose of the domain with our intended audience very well.

Vers 11 - I like the creativity of the symbol.. BUT... I want to know what that symbol is suppose to be(if possible) or what the inspirations were. The font is still off, but I think this "style" is better than vers. 10.

Vers 12 - Similar style to 11. Same questions. This symbol is of a person, but what are they doing? How does it relate to the word exercises? (from a definition perspective or how the letters in the name.)

Offbeat, vers 5: Letters are way too blocky. The BW version seems more legible than the colored one, but the font and a symbol still needs a change-up.

giant: Really like the fact that it's a unique symbol. Now what I need to know is what it's suppose to represent... how you got there.. what the inspiration for it was. I think it needs work to make it more related to the name of the domain, the definition or the letters that make up the word. I think the color combo is fine, but the font is still off -- looks too future'ish. Don't like the way the 'r' and 'c's and i's are drawn and connected.

Vers 8. - Again, the symbol is unique and neat, but will require work. I just need to get an "ah-ha!" moment when I see it and understand immediately how it's related to the rest of the logo. Color combo in this case is also good. Though I feel the size of the .net is small and would like to not have the extension as well as the fact that the domain is PLURAL, not singular to be forgotten. Font needs to be changed.

For EVERYONE:

*** When brainstorming, please don't forget that the domain is PLURAL (it's easier to say 'exercise' than 'exercises') and that the extension is also an important aspect of the logo as a whole. Not that they need to be emphasized, but the ratio should be maintained.

*** Unique symbols are fine. BUT, if you're going to do a unique symbol, please let me know what it's suppose to be and how you got to it. I would love for a unique symbol to be simple, but clever so that anyone can look at it and go "ah-ha! I get it." It just ... has to "click" and make sense to the logo.

*** The fonts so far does not seem to fit the rest of the logo . I'd like to see something that can hold it's own or complements the symbol if there is one

Overall, lots of improvement over the last round!!! Keep it up!

This was my attempt at creating a concept based on the logo you had just referenced for inspiration

Vers 11 - I like the creativity of the symbol.. BUT... I want to know what that symbol is suppose to be(if possible) or what the inspirations were. The font is still off, but I think this "style" is better than vers. 10.
The symbol is made up of 2 abstract shapes coming together to create an "E"

Vers 12 - Similar style to 11. Same questions. This symbol is of a person, but what are they doing? How does it relate to the word exercises? (from a definition perspective or how the letters in the name.)
The main objective to this logo is to signify motion through exercise.
The figure could be jogging, stretching. doing aerobics...I didn't want to limit it to just one obvious workout regime.

Hope that helps explain each of them:)

Hi all,

I want to thank everyone for their contributions so far. They've been tremendous! To make this contest sweeter, I've up'd the prize amount to a whooping $300 on top of the 2nd place bonus ($50)!

With that said, I would LOVE to see some fantastic new concepts that we haven't explored yet.

giant: Thank you for providing your insight on what your inspiration was. I tried to see it from your perspective, but unfortunately couldn't make that association from my eyes.

I need a symbol that is unique enough to integrate into the rest of the logo, but simple enough where if I looked at it, within 10 seconds there is an "ah-ha!" moment and the logo and symbol just _makes sense_.

I keep going back to this, but the logo at slickdeals.net is a great example and does exactly this:

1) The symbol is unique, but not too busy
2) The "$" in the "s" is clever by adding to the uniqueness factor and fits with the theme of the site since the goal of Slick Deals is to save visitors money
3) The symbol complements the name by having the audience connect the "sd" in symbol to the rest of the logo

Concepts like these satisfy the association between symbol, name, & theme/industry; and I feel solidifies a successful brand. I would love to see exercises.net concepts to show this type of association & solid branding.

If you've made it this far.... congratulations! :D Basically if the designer understands why I liked slickdeals' logo, then they're definitely in the right direction. Looking forward to fresh new concepts -- Good luck everyone!!!

Hey skyvee,

Thanks for your dipping your hat into the pond. Good 1st round, though I feel the color-tone and style reminds me of the concepts I've already seen so far. Can we try adding some pizazz to the letters? I like that you branched out and made the leg in "R" stand out more. Your train of thought is good. Maybe we can lower case the "I" and add a dot above the letter.

Small things like this which are subtle but unique/clever may enhance the look of the logo by a lot.

Can we try a different symbol? It's not the right result, but please keep along the same thought process and lets see if something else sparks.

Hey guys,

Rogen: Good entry, but not quite what I'm looking for.

Deanna: The "ex" isn't a bad idea, though the way it's currently being presented isn't working. We won't be able to build off this initial concept.

skyvee: There's a possibility to explore further with this concept. I'm not sure if you saw my post on slickdeals.net (#63), but that holds a lot of the philosophy on my idea of what a logo should be.

- I like the two-tone contrast
- Not sure if we can lighten or change up the the navy blue color a tad. White looks good from what I've seen so far. blue/light orange like #31 is fine too
- I like how you are playing with the interaction amongst letters ("i" and "dot", the quarter circle into the "s"). Can we see some other ideas for the interactions between the letters to compare?
- Maybe a lighter shade for the name itself and some type of stylized effect? (e.g., dropshadow, diff. color borders, dashes, etc.)
- Different font. Don't feel it's the right feel typeface for the type of site
- Symbol wise: Can we try a few similar, but different concepts? Maybe a frontal person view split between the two sides? What else do you feel would tie the symbol to "exercises"? fitness?

I feel that the light blue portion of the symbol has room to add something simple and subtle to it in the background. Maybe like a background symbol or letters in _really_ light blue... almost like an outline?

Glad to see things to are shaping up!

Hey skyvee,

I feel that the latest version took a step backwards.

- Lighter shade of blue
- Try different cases. Big/small capitalized (as in the first E is "big capitalized" and the rest of the letters are "small capitalized"), proper-case (e.g., Exercises.Net, Exercises.NET)

- The new symbol is something I've already seen before and weren't too keen on. I think it's too narrow and doesn't encompass the _general_ idea of "exercises"

- I _really_ would like to see more fonts -- can we try MULTIPLE font versions to save feedback turnaround time? Your #72, #31 are good styles to branch off of. Please take a look at what I've written down so far in this thread regarding which ones I've liked.

- When I talk about integrating symbology with letters, what I mean is synergy between the idea and the name. Take a look at: Click Here (http://www.broerse.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/namejet.png). Do you see how the play on letters relates back to the logo? This is exactly the type of interaction I'm looking for with exercises.net, but so far I don't think it has been captured properly yet.

- The line from "X" to the "i" is a good attempt, but I think it was done without saying much (as in it didn't tie back to the overall concept intuitively enough, e.g., the jet tail on 't" for namejet).

For Everyone: Thanks for your continued efforts. The challenge here requires some serious brainstorming and creative inspiration, so please feel free to take a little time and clear your mind. Eat some eggs. Munch on a granola bar. :D Anything that lets the creativity jiggle. It might help bring all of these elements mentioned above together. I would much prefer to see a well thought out concept than something thrown together. Looking forward to new your new ideas!!!

glyphica: I've seen this concept before in the previous 2 versions and it's not working.... I wanted to see a completely different idea based on the feedback provided throughout the contest .... not a simple variation.

This isn't the direction I'd like to take the logo. Please refer to what's been discussed. Thanks!

giant:

+ capitalized
+ italicized
+ like that there is a separation between name & extension (e.g., name is italicized, extension is not ... name is capitalized, extension is not.)

- 2-tone colors split between the domain is weird. I would prefer to have the color split between name and extension
- Prefer to see a lighter shade of green/blue
- The symbol in the "R" is too specific to running. I need something slightly more abstract, but related. Looking for something _more_ thought out than #31 or #35, but similar along that direction.

Some selected quotes/feedback.

- When I talk about integrating symbology with letters, what I mean is synergy between the idea and the name. Take a look at: Click Here. Do you see how the play on letters relates back to the logo? This is exactly the type of interaction I'm looking for with exercises.net, but so far I don't think it has been captured properly yet.

- www.slickdeals.net - Great font + symbol integration
- www.webmd.com - Great font and style of logo presentation
- http://www.ffwd.com/ -- bit too "web 2.0"ish, but liked the >> button integrated into the 'd'. Point: On-point integration of symbol/name.
- http://www.mint.com/ - Good color combination. Good symbol. Like the attention to detail across the top of 'm' 'i' and 't'. Great font.

Thanks!

* Orange, light green, light blue, white, black are all possibilities

A big thank-you to everyone for your continued support in throwing your ideas on the table!!!!

Hi giant,

- The letters of the font seems too "web 2.0"ish. I think it doesn't give off the right vibe for a fitness / exercises site. In particular the letters E, C, S, R doesn't fit with the theme. Further, the "R" is too thick / fat with the person symbol inside it. It's taking up too much space. Not subtle.

The .net font seems ok (based on 3 letters so far...)

The latest tweaks seems to put the logo in the wrong direction. Especially when this is not the right choice of font/symbol placement combination.

Were you able to get a chance to take a look at the quoted feedback in #79?

Thanks!

First off, A HUGE thank-you to everyone who participated!

While some of the entries coalesced better than others, all of you are very talented designers and pulled the contest in a lot of different (and sometimes unexpected!) directions. :) Great job to all.

With that aside, the winner is glyphica, v4! Congratulations!!!

The runner up is giant -- though it was not what I was looking for, your determination really showed and I truly appreciated your efforts. Thank you.

I'd like to take this into revisions and we can get started on making the changes.

Hi glyphica,

Would like to work on the font:

- Can we see some versions dealing with the cases?
e.g., Proper-case -- Exercises.Net/NET
Capitalized -- EXERCISES.NET (but have the "E" be capitalized and the rest of the letters in "small caps")

- I'm not sure how well this will look but... can we see the vers.5 text on vers 4? (I liked how you differentiated the extension from the domain)

- Can we see move the .net to present it more attractively? I feel it's too boring with the current position / presentation.

Thanks!!!

Hi glyphica,

Ok - definitely vers.7 font is better than vers.6.

For (c), can we put some attention on the .net? Maybe capitalize/small-caps that as well? Different color? Italics is fine. I just want to see some nice differentiation.

I'd like to see some subtle effects as well. Drop-shadow?

For (b), I feel that the symbol is too big relative to the font.

For (a), Please see the 1st paragraph in this post about the extension.

Hey Stephanie,

Thanks for the revisions!

A new font would be fine, but I'm concerned if it's a hit-and-miss. I did like your choices for font though... so it's possible you and I are on a similar page when it comes to font choice.

I feel that the way ".net" is presented doesn't jive well with the rest of the logo. If we can capture presenting that, then the logo should be fantastic.

- All of the versions with the ".net" above or below the name seem quite plain jane with this font.

- I'm not feeling any of the variations in Version 11

- In version 10a, try enlarging the .net to nearly match the same size as the name while _retaining the italics style_ there right now. Have a proper-case and "bigger-case" version.

- 10b, move the .net to the right of the name. Same as above.

- 10c, move the .net to the right of the name. Same as above -- don't italics this, just leave as-is. But, proper-case the caps so the "N" is bigger than the "ET".

* I'm wondering if subtle things like spacing it out a little more (e.g. like chard.net?) might help? Not sure.

Thanks you very much!!
