Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Applied Experience
What type of product or service do you offer?
This is a small start-up that helps large commercial contractors, owners, and architects manage their knowledge. We have developed a software platform that makes it very easy for clients to capture best practices and lessons learned from construction projects and format them in a manner that they are useful to future project teams. Currently, this knowledge is shared internally. More details about the business are on the old website at www.im-prove.com (http://www.im-prove.com/)
In summary, we offer a platform to capture the experiences that people carry in their minds and turn it into structured knowledge that everybody can use.
How long have you been in business?
About ten years doing consulting work, one year offering the software platform.
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
The firm is growing, so we are changing from an LLC to a corporation and taking this opportunity to change the name of the firm. The new name, Applied Experience, should reflect that our software captures knowledge that has been gained through observation or practice (the definition of experience), and that the software puts this knowledge to practical use (the definition of applied).
What are your long term goals?
(1)To become known as the firm with the most experience in helping firms manage their knowledge.
(2)To create networks of firms that agree to share lessons learned and best practices amongst themselves.
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
August 6, 2008
Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
General contractors ranging in size from $100m to $1.4bn, some owners<o:p></o:p>
Who would you like to add to your audience?
More large building owners, more general contractors, some architects or large home-builders maybe
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
I would like the logo to look clean, simple, and modern. The simpler the better. It shouldn’t reflect construction paraphernalia (although modern stencil font might be worth trying). It should reflect European design traditions.
It should work with or without colors. It can have a three dimensional feel, or it can be flat. I like simple geometric shapes (squares and circles) and they can be repeated or have a lot of white space (e.g., Swiss International Airlines or Orange telecom).
While the logo should be simple, there should also be something unexpected, something clever about it. I think that’s important with a long name like Applied Experience.
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
I’m drawn to reds, greys, black, or shades of blue. Green might work too, but I’m color blind, so I’ll rely on your expertise to ensure that the colors reflect what we are trying to communicate.<o:p></o:p>
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
See above for the definition of Applied Experience. In general, I like geometric shapes (2D or 3D). I think the logo could reflect that the software is a platform or an exchange into which clients plug knowledge or extract knowledge. The associated image could be a plane floating in space or some kind of shapes (circles, squares?) that get larger as they come to the center (exchange/market place).
Another image could be that the software takes knowledge that is unstructured and turns it into a structured, useful format. Are these strands or lines that become structured as they move from left to right?
A third image could be some sort of ring or circle that reflects how we capture lessons learned and recycle them to be used on future projects. I guess this is not a closed loop circle, but maybe one that spirals upward or grows to the future?
Finally, I think the name Applied Experience is quite long and relatively descriptive. Maybe we don’t need an image to symbolize what we do, but we can express it by how we show the two words. Can the two words express a progression, an improvement (e.g., the second word above or in front of the first word?) Can they look very clean and simple and express that we are trustworthy and high-tech (see Communication Strategy below)?
Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
I think the logo should reflect that we are trustworthy (clients can trust us with their internal knowledge), we are professional, tech-savy, and at the cutting edge of developments in the construction industry. We appeal to large owners, contractors, and architects alike, and we don’t really serve the mom-and pop contractors or residential home builders. We are close to the software industry although our roots are in commercial construction.
What is your tagline or slogan?
Please don’t include this tag line in the logo, but the most succinct what to describe what we do is “we make company knowledge useful.”
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
You may not have heard of us before, but we are a firm you can trust. We will be around for the long haul and we are experts at what we do. We are solid, straight-forward, honest, and we don’t oversell ourselves. We are very professional.<o:p></o:p>
Where will your new logo be used?
Website, business cards, brochure. Mainly online
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
There are no direct competitors.
List competitive URLs if possible
NA
What sets you apart from your competitors?
We offer a platform with a very intuitive user interface that reflects the way the project teams in the construction industry operate. Our platform comes pre-loaded with a lot of content that is ready to use. Other solutions (document or content management systems), require a lot of customization and don’t have the industry-tailored functionality.
Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
We make knowledge useful
I hope this information is helpful. Thanks in advance for your help!
