My wife owns a small private school in Northborough, MA. It is a kindergarten through Grade 4. Information on the school may be found at www.cornerstoneacademy.org. We are planning on updating the site but the new website has not been posted. It will be a major style upgrade (professional) to the site.

The school focuses on academic excellence. Our students are generally gifted and achievement oriented. We would like a more traditional logo that is not cartoonish. Previous logo's that we have commissioned have been geared more towards daycares and pre-schools which we are not. We believe that our school is based upon the "cornerstones" of education, family, character, social responsibility. We are a for-profit, non-religious school.

Our school colors are cranberry and creme. We want to use the logo for website, letterhead, t-shirts, etc.

We will close the contest is ten days or on or about Novermber 1, 2003. We have liked the other logo's that have been designed by the talented designers at the Design Outpost and hope that we will finally be able to find a logo that has the look and feel that we are seeking.

Many thanks.

Hi I see you've all been hard at work designing my logo. I have to say dynagirl is my favorite so far, needs something else not sure what but you are definately on the right track. Keep at it

In this one, I tried to clarify the concept a little better (cornerstone, school, the future--hopefully you get all that from looking at it) and I added some black to give it a bolder look.

Dynagirl: We like the design but there is still something missing. We like the changes. Our concern at this point is that the building with the tag line doesn't really project an academic building or school. We are concerned with the logo being confused for a construction firm. Though the Cornerstone Academy should give it away. How could we make it look more like a school. A bell, kids, the four cornerstones - education, family, social responsibility, character. We love the tag line but not sure about the word "building". Once again, we don't want to be confused with a construction firm.

To the others, thanks for your work. Don't give up! If you have any other ideas based upon what we have been discussing here. Feel free to submit.

Another possibility (and a change direction is a seal or crest. This seems to be a standard among schools, colleges, etc. The key would be to not make it cartoony but rather crisp and traditional. Just a thought.

Thanks.

Hello :)

Here's my first design :) I can place this into a crest if you like. I tried to picture your logo needs from your original post and the replies you placed during the contest. The idea is that your graduates are winners (therefore I tried to design a student/pupil image - and a winner one), after being a part of the highest educational programs in your school.

Best regards,
Gilles.

:( We are kind of disappointed by the way that this all turned out. We will take responsibility for not giving enough feedback but we expected that there might be more designs to choose from. We should have decided what we wanted before we started the process.

Dynagirl - We liked your design. The bell and the book probably would have been better with more detail. It was just missing SOMETHING. Not sure about the box with the four boxes. We loved the tag line and feel that it was excellent.

Core Design - We thought your design was artistic but a little too funky. Not sure that it portrayed the school image enough.

Giles LeBonn - We liked the seal. It is a good idea that could have been developed. The center design is still not what we want. We would have liked more detail all-around.

Something with the four corners (education, character, family and values) might have been interesting. We're not designers so we weren't sure exactly what we wanted. That's our issue not yours.

To all thanks for the time and effort spend. We are open on how to end the contest and make an award. We could split it three ways (not sure if that is allowed). Or, would it help and generate more interest in increasing the fee by $50-75.

We figured that who ever won the award would get any future business or establish a business relationship that could be carried forward (referrals). That was sort of a given.

Any thoughts?

:o Follow-up: My husband and I just went through all of the logos again one by one. Raja has a good idea with the children holding hands in a circle and the Cornerstone Academy typeface was very good. They just don't go together.

We like all of the designs. We just think that they all needed a little more work to make them something special and more school-like. We like the elements of a seal or a shield (split with the four corners) merging some of the design elements from what each of you has shown.

Once again, thanks. :help:

our new site is now up at http://www.cornerstoneacademy.org. This is the direction that we are moving in to create an identity.

You could certainly extend the deadline if you'd like to see more entries. Or, if one is close you could pick that one as the winner and work directly with the designer. It's entirely up to you. If you're not satisified yet, add a week to see what else comes along.

If possible, surf the web and point us to some logos that you like.

Tonya
11-03-2003, 06:36 PM
If you do decide to extend it, feedback helps considerably in getting us to hone in on what you're looking for. Keep in mind that without feedback, we really have no idea if we're even going in the right direction or if changes we've made to a previous entry are even liked. So the contest pretty much grinds to a halt when that happens because no one wants to keep working on an idea that may be way off base. Let us know what you decide.

Thanks for the input. We looked at the last few designs. These are the comments:

Gilles LeBon: Like the seal design. Could be a little more detailed. Still do not like the graphical illustration of the person and the bar running underneath. Any other suggestions?

Raja: Like the design of the children holding hands in a circle. The name and the illustration are out of proportion from each other. How would it look to merge the two - the circle with Cornerstone Academy (same type) running through it. Also, color - cream and cranberry.

DynaGirl: Too many squares. Could we try to add graphical illustrations of each of the "corners" - family, character, education, values. Some ideas - a book, family, lamp of knowledge or traditional school type symbols. Keep the tag line.

Penny Lane: Too green. Not sure that we like the name running through the child graphic. "n" is one visible. Thought - could we illustrate the one in cornerstone

Mark Beaudry: We like the letter but not the design. The squares are too plain and we do not like the stick figures.

We wouldn't mind seeing a few traditional seal type of designs.

Hopefully, we have not angered anyone with our comments but these are our observations.

Thanks.

ElKootcho - Nice Job! We like to design alot. Couple of suggestions: could we get education, family, social responsibility and character in the banner. On the shield - we like the book but would replace the other two symbols, maybe one could be a lamp of knowledge and the other ??? (something educational). Thanks for your entry.

Raja - Nice job on the redesign. Karen and I would like to think about it a little before we add our comments.

Once again, thanks for your efforts.

Hi kmc265 ! Hi Karen ! :D

I´m presenting a work based on a fourfoldfold way:

1 - Contemporary and clean design (as requested) for the Academy.

2- The cornerstone is the basic symbol of the logo, inspired by it´s name.

The most important figure at the cornerstone is the Teacher, because she is "the way" to transfer those "cornerstones". (She´s in front of the cornerstone) I used a female teacher, because they are recognized as more sensitive(and I think that too) and 99% of the Teachers (Kindergarten) are basicaly females, too ! (I´m wrong about that ?)

The children behind her are holding hands and are following together the teachings based on the cornerstones.

3- Used only the tag "A Quality Private Education"

I prefer not to use the cornerstones in the logo because (very personal thought - I don´t have made that experience ! ) that would be excessive information for this particular image. I can be completely wrong about that. Please let me know.

4- Tried to concentrate efforts on the cream and the cranberry colours (the academy´s colours. ) "Cream" and "cranberry" are a little generic names for the colours, if you know what I mean... If the tones are displaced, feel free to take a new experience.

5- there´s no fivefold way(kiding :lol2: ). I think I rather being a writer ! Sorry for the whole explanation. That was a hard work ! :hammer: Please feel completely free to add or subtract. If i´m in the wrong way, no problem. ! Please let me know...

Here we go ! ;) Sorry for my poor english - i´m from Brazil.

I'll explain the symbolism here:
book = education
star = character (exemplary behavior)
branch = family (your roots / what you grow from)
lamp = social responsibility (being a light in the world / helping others)
