Hello, my name is Melanie and I would like a new logo for my publishing company before my next book is ready to launch:yes:.

The company is called Heartlights Publishing, and so far we have written books for new mothers, although, I wouldn't want to limit myself to birth. Purple is my favourite colour, but I love logos with many bright colours in them, so surprise me! My timeline is for the logo to be completed by Monday, August 4th.

I am so excited to see what you can come up with.

Welcome,
Please highlight these questions http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7819 and then paste them into a new message in your project along with your answers. This will help the Designers better serve your project. Thank you

Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?

Heartlights Publishing

What type of product or service do you offer?

Books, journals, cookbooks

How long have you been in business?

3 years

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?

To have a great image on the back of the published books, and on the forms that are displayed on my website.

What are your long term goals?

To publish books that will help families grow closer together.

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?

August 4th

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience

Pregnant and new mothers, but I don't want to limit myself to just this demographic. Our next project will probably be for kids with ADHD and ADD.

Who would you like to add to your audience?

Families, mothers, fathers, children

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?

Something bright and eye catching

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)

I like purple and bright colours, anything that looks nice.

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?

Well, obviously, hearts and lights as the name is heartlights publishing, but even then the logo does not have to be limited by that.

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?

Creativity, sharing of information, connecting with one another, helping others live their lives more easily

What is your tagline or slogan?

I don't have one as of yet, I'll have to think about that.

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?

Our books will make life easier

Where will your new logo be used?

On the back of my books, on my website and forms.

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?

Can't say, there are lots of publishers and self publishers out there

List competitive URLs if possible

What sets you apart from your competitors?

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:

I really like the version 3! Could you change the heart so that it looks more like a real heart?:D

Sure; the first ones had the spiral b/c I was trying to do a heart + sun combo

Can you give me a few more options on the heart? It's not quite right, I like the idea of including a heart and a sun, but I can't tell you what would make it better. Can you also make the publishing word a bit bolder or slightly bigger?

Thanks so much!

Here's one more; I'll look for other ways to combine the heart and sun like my first one w/ a different style heart.

What a great start!

Jennifer, I like the new heart. It still needs something, could you put it at the left of Heartlights Publishing? Could you make the lines a bit more clean? I'm still open to new heart ideas.

The offbeat design version 2 - could you also give me new heart options? I like the font!

Offbeat version 3 - can you also try new things with hearts or something new?

Design team version 1 - I love the font! The heart looks like it's on a card, rather than a book. Can you also try a new heart image.

WOW! You are all awesome. I am so grateful for your work.

FABULOUS!!

Offbeat Design. I love both of them. For version 4, can you make the outside of the heart purple, and the word publishing a rich red colour?

For version 4, can you make the purple background and the word publishing a deep red colour as well?

Thanks for your great work.

I really like version 7!!! It still comes down to the heart. The sharper edges of the box around the heart look out of place. I like the golden colour within. Can you try a few more different types of hearts? The red needs to be a bit deeper, so that it can tie into the purple. Can you make the publishing look a bit more substantial?

I really like this version! Thank you.

Much better! I wonder if it is possible to make the outer box more transparent. (Not sure if there's a design term to use here) When I see the black and white version, it's a bit too much black. With a less solid background, it would come out grey.

Is there any chance you can try a few different hearts as well?

So sorry, I didn't see the last designs you've submitted!! I forgot to refresh.

I like version 9 - can you make the background around the heart more translucent? Still wondering about the term to use here.

Version 10 is interesting! I'll think about that one more.

I like version 12 - the heart is a little more offset. Can you try this one with a lighter background as well.

I really appreciate your effort.

Could you try one that is not so symmetrical? Or one that looks like it's been drawn? Or made with a ribbon? Something flowing?

I'm sorry if this is difficult for you. I hope that this helps.

WOW!

It's all so wonderful! We are so close.

I still like offbeat's number 9 - a big contender
I love the font you've used for Heartlights
I like the variation of the colour in the back ground of 14b.

Can you try one more thing? Instead of a rectangle behind the heart in version 14b, can you make it a sun, with a few rays coming out the sides? I think it might look great that way.

I love version 15 also! I'm going to have to ask a few friends to see what a bigger group of people thinks instead of just me.

Kekepania, can you take the book off completely and just work with the heart?

Melanie:)

drmelaniebee

Offbeat - just for trying things out, can you try the Heartlights Publishing from 14b and put the heart sunrise from 15 over top? It might go well that way.

Well, version 16 didn't work out as I'd hoped. The font doesn't go with the sunrise. I like your original font better, but I'm partial to the font in 17.

I don't think that I explained my idea very well in the last post. Can you take version 14, leave the heart as it is with the yellow in the middle and the orange around it. then leave it with a white border. Then put it on a red circle (same coulour as the rectangle is) for a sun and then put rays around it? I like the three colours together.

The heart with the rays in version 17 is nice, but I'd like to see a sun there.

Thanks so very much.

Thanks for your work, offbeat!

I'm thinking that the hearts need to be a bit smaller. Can you make the sunshine rays wavy and tapered to a point? Also, with the black and white version, can you make it look more like the shades of grey in version of 14?

I think that the sun should be one solid colour.

I really like this new version

The moderators do not want us to post any more grayscale versions of the logo, just the solid and pure black and white. If selected I can provide a tonal grayscale version as well.

In the meantime...

drmelaniebee
07-30-2008, 08:11 PM
It's looking good! Thanks for the info on the grayscale thing. Sorry to create a problem.

Can you make the whole sun heart combo about 1/3 smaller? It almost looks too big. I like the yellow sun rays, can you also make them about 1/2 the size and continue around the sun except for where the words are?

Melanie:)

Offbeat - what is your first name anyway? - it's late and we're both tired, I'm sure. I'm going to sleep on all of this. I think that maybe it's going too fast, so I'm going to look at all of your other versions tomorrow morning. Maybe this is getting too complicated, and one of the previous ones is a better choice.

One last thought. Can you make the sun orangey yellow, the outside heart purple and the inside heart red? My 7 year old daughter thought of that and I think she might have a great idea. We might not need those rays after all.

Melanie:)

Hi Jennifer

Thanks for you submisison. I didn't mean to forget you. I'm not sure that the heart is right. I can see what you're trying to do, but it isn't what I was looking for. I've been looking at logo competitions for others and yours are always so great. Why don't you come up with something totally different, and don't worry about hearts at all?

Melanie

Jeff, at this point, the logo is between 14b and 20b, I keep coming back to 14b and thinking that it is so nice. The lines are simpler, and we like the variation in the background. Could you make the red in the rectangle one shade darker? It's weird, I have two computers and the red looks different on both monitors.

Also, Would you mind taking out the rays on version 20b and having just a circle? I do like the colours better that way, the rays make it look like a spider a bit.

Jennifer, I like the candle idea with the heart flame. Can you make version 9 look more like a heart than a tulip? (I just see it that way!)

Thank you!

Version 21 is so great. I do love it a bit darker. One more request (the last one, I hope!). I have been looking at other web design projects and one was for a company called compass. When they made the compass look 3-d the logo just popped off the page. Is it possible to make the heart look 3-D?

Love it, love it, love it!

Jeff

I really didn't do a good job explaining my idea. The compass itself on some of the later versions seemed to come out of the page. I don't think that it was because the background was tilted, maybe it was. Can you keep the background the same as version 21 and have the heart be 3D? Is this even possible? Also, just for kicks, is it possible to make a tiny tiny heart for the dot of the "i" in Heartlights?

X-pressions - I see what you're doing with the "h", but it looks too pointy. I do like the dot on the "i"

Melanie

Melanie,

The dimension you're seeing on the compass if from the hard angles where 2 pieces meet. You're not going to have that on a heart. I was able to add some shading to it to help it stand out more.

The ultimate choice will be between version 21 and 23. I love the heart on version 23, it is perfect!

I'll ask my friends and family for their opinion and let you know which one is the best liked.

Thank you, it is beautiful

I know that the competition is until August 4th. However, I like offbeat's design so much that it would be unfair to everyone else to have them offer suggestions when I would just be waiting until the 4th to say which one I like.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. They were all fabulous.

Jeff, there are a few little last things. The design that I like is number 21, but could you add the heart on the "i" from number 23?

Also on the black and white version, could you make it like version 14, but make the outside box just a shade darker than the inside of the heart so that they grey tones look like three colours instead of 2?

Thank you for all your effort working with me. I truly love your design.
